Should i wait for prices to go down to build my long-awaited first pc
Posted by egmstr@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 43 comments
For over 10 years i wanted to build my own pc, i remember making build lists for 400$ in 2016 on the family mac.
As an adult now i always delayed having a good pc because it doesn't feel like a necessity. Fixing my car or travelling is where most of my extra money goes. i bought a second hand custom pc for 400$ a few years ago and its.. enough.
Now i am getting a good amount of money i was thinking of doing a nice mid range 1000$ build but it doesn't feel worth it.
I want a pc that i wont have to upgrade for at least 5 years and can play decent games at good settings, cs2, modded minecraft, maybe even gta 6?
Im also editing videos in premiere on my second hand potato and it works but better performance would be greatly appreciated, especially since im looking to get into 3d modeling and more.
So yea i dont know if im ready to put 2000$ yet on my first build. Everything got so expensive in the last years. But i mean if prices will keep going up then i just might suck it up and do the 2000$
What do you guys think?
I dont 100% know what im talking about im looking for opinions. Thank you so much if you read the whole thing maybe i made this too long. Have a blessed day

At least 2030, if you can wait, then save up to purchase PTX 6090 32gb, 64GB DDR6 DRAM and Ryzen 9 12900x3D. Make sure once you decide, make it counted in the history

Prices aren't going down, but if you put some effort into it and fish for some deals and also build the Pc yourself you can definitely save a couple hundreds of bucks. Do you live in the US by any chance? I always see crazy posts on reddit from microcenter/costco/walmart deals.
T2_daBest@reddit
I I wish more people had upgraded or bought earlier as now it's getting insane. I got a Costco prebuilt in October for $950 after they adjusted they sell the exact same PC all except for the storage not only being 1 tb instead of 2 and it costs $1500 🤯
LumpyOctopus007@reddit
Prices may not go down
skyresident1@reddit
The prices aren’t going to come down, the consumer at large dictates the market price and enough people have been buying gpus at the current price.
SoundSwitch@reddit
I managed to get myself a refurb Lenovo P5220 (think that's the model number) workstation for Christmas.
It only came with the can, motherboard and RAM for just over $200 at the time. Put an Intel B580 an NVMe 2gb and 2 /2gb HDD in it. Total build cost was under $700 I think.
Does what I need it to. And I know even at the time I wouldn't have gotten 64gb of RAM any other way.
caffeinecrackhead02@reddit
Seeing the state of everything I built my second one after getting rid of my first for an egpu handheld set up as my pc. I don’t think we will be going down anytime soon due to ai and other garbage
Otherwise-Magician@reddit
Just get what you can afford now.
I've literally downgraded a build in looking into because parts (storage and ram) are insane.
AtmosphereLumpy7064@reddit
Nah, build it now if you're excited—prices always fluctuate lol. What's your budget?
AlfaPro1337@reddit
Are you going to wait until 2030?
egmstr@reddit (OP)
Good point. Money will come back
Deep_Negotiation_326@reddit
For your needs I recommend an rtx 5060ti minimum you can max out games at 1080p with it and max out alot of games at 1440p too but not the heavy AAA games you will drop it down to high (AMD not recommended because you said you want to get into productivity with the PC, and Intel is going out of the GPU game so not recommended too) For the mother board you would want an AM5 with 32gigs of ram and a fairly good CPU
Look up PCs with these specs and choose for your own
Otherwise-Vanilla808@reddit
What about rtx 5090 with 64 gb ram ddr5
MoistWelder8712@reddit
Exactly what I think whenever I read comments from people saying: "not worth it to build now, wait for prices to go down" lol
Bonfires_Down@reddit
I’m not buying at those prices but that’s just me. Is it possible to upgrade your current PC?
itnice@reddit
Just wait until GTA6 comes out. It won't be
long
Low_Complex8073421@reddit
The cost on some parts currently is a huge discouragement. I had a reasonable build list in October that was $840 by the end of November it was $1300.
I have been buying pieces slowly when I see sale prices, but the RAM prices are a let down.
ZOLLINO@reddit
My take on this is... After 12 years I'm going to build new highspec gaming PC. But I'm delaying doing it so until 2027 as per:
Prices of RAM can just drop, not seeing another wave of increasing prices atm.
New CPUs (AMD) and GPUs will be released next year. So now it's better for me to wait a little longer.
Obsivously it's up to you how you decide. If you need PC now, go ahead and buy it straight away.
Unfair-Tone3991@reddit
Maybe get a ps5 instead they will prob run just as good as a 1k pc tbh ye u can do less on it but for gaming only its a option
Right_Opinion_6958@reddit
Yes, you said you make a fair enough money so go for it... Nobody can tell you when SSD and ram prices will reduce, and it's it's only about $100 if you shop around for the deals. A new rig is still worth the extra $100...
Hold onto your old PC and give it to the kids, etc. use this for 2-5 years and down the road it's up to you if you do want to sell.. personaly I say no.
egmstr@reddit (OP)
Yea you guys are right i should just go for it, thanks a lot for the recommendations
Right_Opinion_6958@reddit
You can find the best deals on Facebook marketplace and pawnshops
But I highly recommend microcenter bc of the warranty
Ladyheather16@reddit
Microcenter warranties are gold
Right_Opinion_6958@reddit
Indeed... It feels really good sitting at your gaming chair with the warranty and gaming at the best poss FPS
Ladyheather16@reddit
I've had to use them more than a few times and they've been everything,
Ok-Can-7995@reddit
This is the answer. I held onto my old PC for my son. It was several years before ehe was old enough. But I still saved a few hundred after upgrading a few things and after 3 years. It still holds up for the games he plays on it.
Right_Opinion_6958@reddit
Yup, we can put our old PCs in the garage or bedroom to stream movies, etc and down the road give the rigs to the kids so they can keep their filthy paws off are new PCs
Dirt_McDart@reddit
I dont think prices are going to be getting cheaper tbh. All the talks about AI companies buying so much hardware makes me believe that we wont see hardware prices drop anytime soon. Id pull the trigger now personally
Terroriffica@reddit
If you want a PC you can not ulgrade for 5yrs for $1000-$2000... Youre going to have to go Used GPU for sure. Im unsure what youre looking to do, what gsmes or settings youd want to play on, ect. You can get the best performsnce per dollar buying a nice used GPU, combo deal motherboard, ram, mobo(micro center), and the rest is easy. Feel free to dm me if you have any questions or need help! Building it is easy, but used PC parts are the best bet for price to performance.
iam-X@reddit
I built my 13900k/4090 pc in 2020, at that time I decided to say F-it and got the 4090 suprim liquid I wanted, it added 1127 to my build
At the time everyone was talking about how inflated and high cost these things were.
I’m glad I didn’t wait
No_Mink@reddit
Buy for what you need, you may look for sales at convenience. If you’re in the US memorial day sale is coming up.
vlhube71@reddit
If you have the money and need the PC, just get it. Prices may come down but they could very well go up.
Carib0ul0u@reddit
Dude, it’s not just pcs, the price of everything will continue to go up till there are only poor and rich people. It’s on purpose, obviously, so be on the side of being rich and work more and more as time goes on!
circuitloss@reddit
I spent $2,000 in the year 1999 to get a good desktop PC. Adjusted for inflation. That's like $3,800 now.
You could buy an insanely good PC for that price today. So think about it this way, it's all relative. Things are expensive compared to a few years ago but not expensive compared to historical averages.
Ninhau@reddit
If you can wait 2-3 years
Domaik@reddit
Prices will probably never come down but that's beyond the point. I think your question is more about your personal finances than anything else. It feels like you're still not ready to make a big purchase. Wait until your economic situation is stable enough that you can without a doubt say: I can spend the money and be okay
Any-Difference8993@reddit
unfortunately this is the new normal
Ok-Can-7995@reddit
I bit the bullet a few years ago and finally built a new one. Glad I did since pricing has judt continued going up. Let's be honest. How often do we see overall pricing for anything come back down.
perfect_for_maiming@reddit
It's so rare it usually makes the news...which of course then gives the false impression it happens more often because people remember it better.
nechdoesntno@reddit
Genuinely I don’t think the price will come down for quite a while…and when it does go down it will go down slowly. I built my 7900 XTX build even though I knew 9070XT was coming in like a month and have not regretted it, the sooner you build it the sooner you get to actually start playing, you can always upgrade further down the line, maybe make a few compromises here and there, like 1 TB instead of 2, 9600x instead of 9800x3d etc.
I don’t live in the US but micro center often has some crazy good combo deals, so you can save a decent bit of money from that. I just tried putting together a “budget” 1440p build that will play everything on high setting comfortably and it was around £1500, so with the deals you have in the states I think you can definitely do a really good build (that you won’t have to upgrade for 5 years) for around $1600-1700, or cheaper than that even, but anyways that’s my 2 cents, good luck with it.

Prices may never come downÂ
Stars_Storm@reddit
Line must go up. So prices are never going to go back down.
Just rip the band-aid off now.

Honest answer? Its up to you. None of us have a magic 8-ball to know, however signs do point to it getting much worse before it gets better.
