So many aerodynamic afterthoughts. Is the 415 an engine upgrade?
Rallymodeller@reddit
The -415 is based on the original CL-215, the first purpose-built water bomber. When Canadair designed it in the 60s, radial engines were both plentiful and relatively inexpensive, so they made it so the CL-215 used the entire R-2800 power pod (engine, nacelle, propeller, etc) from then-surplus A-26 Invaders. This meant that operators could obtain power pods from surplus dealers and have spares on hand.
Over time though, that caught up with the original design and as radials became more and more rare operators started requesting alternative power.
The first step Canadair took was to swap out the R2800s for then-new Pratt and Whitney Canada PW120 turboprops. This and a few other mods created the CL-215T, which is the designation for all converted aircraft. The swap mainly consisted of the engines and nacelles, the fuel system, and a few aerodynamic tweaks like the finlets on the horizontal tail.
Canadair then took to redesigning the water bomber to better use the new powerplant. With the -415 they subsantially changed the internal design, including such amenities as powered controls (until then they were pure cable operated), air conditioning, and a revised water dump system that allowed for sequential drops instead of one large water drop.
The new -515 adds a full EFIS cockpit, increased automation, and new sensors.

I believe the 515 has greater water capacity and faster replenishing
Rallymodeller@reddit
It does, as well as improved foam/retardant injection and computerized drop doors allowing for an wider range of drop patterns.

This is perfect. Thanks!
Been a while since I saw the 415 at the Côte d'Azur. First exercises where they'd drop the water back into the Mediterranean, and a few days later already they were take their cargo inland.

I got to tour one of these a couple years ago, and talked to the pilot a bit. The engines are an upgrade, and I think they had some upgrades to the instruments and such. It's quite an interesting airplane and the pilots and crew pretty much stay in and with the plane when they can't get to other accommodations. The inside smells like a locker room.

Free showers I guess.
Makes sense!

People are confused about the name. Used to be made by Canadair. Then became a Bombardier product. Then Viking air bought most De Havilland Canada products and eventually brought the name back and acquired some Bombardier designs. It is now technically called still called the CL-415 even though the new name is used for the DHC-515. They still use “Canadair” because most of the world called it the “Canadair Superscooper” or “Waterbomber”
Therefore a more accurate and confusing name would be the De Havilland Canada Canadair CL-415.

Not a Canadair Bombardier DeHavilland Canada Viking Super SplashyBoi?
Rallymodeller@reddit
In France they just call them "Canadairs". So of course the name had to stick.

Anyone else hear “Thunderstruck” in their head now?

More iconic than weird but I'm glad its here
Adghnm@reddit (OP)
To me it looks like a really excellent toy.
CocoSavege@reddit
Can anybody speak to the extra vertical stub stabilizers on the tail? Never seen that before.
orlock@reddit
A high quality drop, too. The drops are supposed to look as if they drop straight down for a bit. That ensures the right coverage on the ground.

I love the Seaduck livery.
Adghnm@reddit (OP)
It might have appeared here before but I just love it
syzygybeaver@reddit
And it's being superceded by the -515. https://dehavilland.com/de-havilland-canadair-515/
rdm55@reddit
This was never a DeHavilland product.
syzygybeaver@reddit
Is now. 😄
