My favorite part about the Mongolia special is I think it's the first time in modern history three British men went on holiday and stayed completely sober.
I've been watching the original, 2004 'Long Way Around' and Ewan and Charley had the hardest time transversing Mongolia (15 years before the Grand Tour special!). Mud, sand, rocks, no roads. Even their 4X4 support truck flipped over at one point, injuring some of the crew.
What exactly are you referring to? Other than being overweight, this is what a 66 year old man looks like. Worse if he had done manual labor for a living
I actually thought they'd put him in old man make up to go along with the retirement home bit, then it cut to the other two and I realised that's just what he looks like these days 😬
I think these were recorded a while back. He’s lost a lot of weight and has been working on his health. But farming is a hard job and that takes a toll on him.
Mongolia was the best special because it was such an adventure like the older Top Gear ones. Because of their age they stopped doing the more rugged things, which is understandable, but Mongolia was the exception.
They didn't rely on slapstick set up moments, it was genuine moments with great lines and jokes. I think the beach buggy and the boats are the only specials that really get close to that sense of adventure.
I've always found that the simpler the premise, the closer to just "get from Point A to Point B" the goal was, the better the special was. Mongolia, Cam-boat-ia, Vietnam.
I also really liked Part 1 of the beach buggy film, but it lost me in Part 2 when they veered into the whole animal poaching piece.
24 hrs race was probably their most ambitious and most successful. Just simply cause they were able to go all 24 hrs all 3(4) of them and finish the 24 hrs race.

Who's gone? Who's John? I watched top gear as a young child, so I don't remember much.
FlimsyWillow84@reddit
The Mongolia special will always be my favorite special from both Top Gear and Grand Tour.

I don't think they got drunk during the Africa special.
chrstianelson@reddit
I literally watched the Africa special again last night and Jeremy had a fridge full of beer in his BMW.
Lurks_in_the_cave@reddit
I was actually thinking of the Botswana special.
Vermland@reddit
Is that the one with Oliver?
Hammond drinks beer in that when the mechanics fix it after he gets a little water in Oliver.
Lurks_in_the_cave@reddit
Yes.
WySLatestWit@reddit
The top gear Botswana special. I assume they drank during it but just weren't as blatant about it due to 20 year old television standards
jackinsomniac@reddit
Dang, did they put them up a retirement home already?? Where's this interview being filmed from?
youvebeenfarmed@reddit
Insufferable twats, all three of them. But Jeremy is the king of twats.

Never watched the very last episode. So there will always be one more for me to watch. Feel like I grew up with these lucky bastards.
PM_ME_UR_REDPANDAS@reddit
Same, haven’t watched it either. I’ll probably ugly cry before they even start talking when I do.
_TheShapeOfColor_@reddit
I've watched it many times now. Still ugly cry with each viewing.

That episode was in 2019.

Nah you can look a lot better at 66.

I mean, bros 66, always been a bit overweight and smoked for decades.
NotAEurosnob@reddit
True, it just feels like every time I see him he's aged 5 years!
Makes me feel old, I grew up with these guys and now they're looking more and more like my grandparents

Hammond still has wedding ring on so must have been filmed awhile ago.
Specific_Effort_5528@reddit
That's good to hear!
I remember how incredibly nervous he was during the pandemic.
Specific_Effort_5528@reddit
I know what you mean.
I'm in my 30s and I can't remember a time when these guys weren't doing their thing until the Grand Tour ended.
End of an Era now that they've hung it up. But look at all the decades of television we got out of it.

The Beach Buggy episode is underrated IMO. It doesn’t get talked about very often, but it’s a good one.
mcfaillon@reddit
This is exactly how I picture them in the retirement village eventually Caleb will build on clarksons farm just to keep Jeremy occupied
TheTBass@reddit
I think Hammond could have afforded to let the other two drive John a little more, at least

Why
Ostentatious_Kilroy@reddit
