what’s a car opinion you’ll defend forever?
Posted by evinho07@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 1153 comments
Car people always have at least one opinion they’ll argue about forever no matter how unpopular it is. Could be about manuals, EVs, muscle cars, reliability, mods, or anything else
What’s your biggest car hot take and what’s one car opinion that instantly tells you someone has no idea what they’re talking about?
Upper-Professor-8717@reddit
Car safety standards should be 80% based on the safety of people OUTSIDE the car, only 20% the occupants.
In order of priority: pedestrians, cyclists/motorcycle/human powered vehicles, then other cars.
This mentality would penalize and limit: - vehicles with lower visibility - vehicles with excessive weight - vehicles with excessive height and size - vehicles with angular designs and sharp corners, blunt surfaces if impacting somebody on food
That would then make cars also safer for other drivers.
The path we’re on is “give me a tank to keep me safe - f*** everybody else” and we’re all worse off. And it’s all of our fault for buying these stupid ass giant trucks and SUVS
Careless-Internet-63@reddit
Minivans are superior to SUVs in pretty much every use case the average person will ever want a car for
No_Win7658@reddit
Everything is superior to the marketing joke that is an SUV
Rendogog@reddit
Unless you actually live rurally and need one (or similar).
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
Only if you confuse an SUV with a crossover.
No_Win7658@reddit
Nope .. crossover just pretend a little less hard
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
An OBS Bronco is a "marketing joke"?
No_Win7658@reddit
Yes . Well a combination of dirty protectionism and dirty marketing is maybe more accurate
jeffyessir888@reddit
Why are you retarded
cosp85classic@reddit
Are you sure you know what an OBS Bronco is? The one from the 1960s.
No_Win7658@reddit
I’m not American so it’s not that these were ever common here - is it the OJ Simpson one?
I guess it’s an example of a vehicle starting life as an overweight offroad vehicle and evolving towards an SUV
FordMan7point3@reddit
The original Ford Bronco competed with the Jeep Wrangler.

cosp85classic@reddit
You need to look at the Wiki on the Bronco. You have it wrong from the word go.
Euphoric_Local3265@reddit
Typically when mentioning OBS Ford trucks you’re referring to the 7th-9th gen aka 1980-1996. So yes, the “OJ Bronco” lol
reidft@reddit
And station wagons. I'll never forgive the North American market for killing off wagons here

Wagons are and always will be a awesome dad car.

RIP glydia my 1995 Toyota camry wagon, you will be loved and remembered until I die.
Federal-Membership-1@reddit
Even as a college age dude in the 80s, I thought Mercedes and BMW wagons were cool. Just bought a Crosstrek.
FatherIncoming@reddit
I recently got to drive a 2020 crosstrek for the first time, and that car is such a nice ride. I live in the mountains with lots of twisty roads and the handling was phenomenal. Super fun, zippy little thing, I told my aunt who I borrowed it from I want one now haha.
Snuggle84@reddit
The fact that you call the crosstrek a zippy little thing, tells me you must be Canadian or American;)

Long live the volvo wagon
No_Mathematician3158@reddit
Isn't the volvo wagon gone in the USA?
keithrc@reddit
Yes. 😞 The V60 was only discontinued in February, so there's probably still new ones sitting on dealer lots. Get one before they're gone.
Cynyr36@reddit
The v60xc and v90xc are still around? Not the suvs. The lifted wagons aith the plastic arches.
keithrc@reddit
I think even the Cross Countrys are discontinued in the US now, although they might still be available in other markets.
Deep-Egg-9528@reddit
Correct. They are still available in Canada.
tetsuo_and_soup@reddit
Do you not know what the term "long live" means
billhorstman@reddit
My 2006 Volvo wagon is still going strong. I plan to keep it until it dies.
ravingmoonatic@reddit
Not to mention all those muscle bound behemoths they get to drive in European countries. So jealous!!!
chillaxtion@reddit
My parents had a Honda Odyssey and I have a pilot. Same chassis and motor but OMFG the Odyssey was more useful, better mileage and handling.
Mrmagoo1077@reddit
Our 06 Odyssey had a surprising amount of power for a minivan. That thing could actualy get down if you pushed it.
chillaxtion@reddit
Yeah! My parents was the same. I mean, it’s the pilot motor so it does ok pulling that tank and it’s the avalanche motor too.
ParticularWhole9433@reddit
The avalanche has a chevy v8 in it.
chillaxtion@reddit
Oh yeah the ridge line. Thats what it’s called, or something
kevintheredneck@reddit
There is a guy in Corpus Christi Texas who drives a Japanese version of the Honda Odyssey. Right hand drive and everything. I had the side by side let’s see if we can wreck anything this weekend version back in the early 90’s.
Final_Instance_8542@reddit
Similar but very different, technically same engine completely different every thing else.
chillaxtion@reddit
I’m pretty sure it’s the same platform as the MDX and it’s all just a longer or shorter floor pan. They add and remove stuff but pretty much the same brakes all the FWD stuff is the same but they just add in the rear drive on the boy styled ones to deal with insecurity
Final_Instance_8542@reddit
Try to put a mdx transmission in a odyssey, you would find after 6 hours of work that the odyssey is missing parts that the mdx has namely the 4 wheel drive system.
chillaxtion@reddit
Yes, true. But the platform is the same. The motor, the basic pan it all sits on, the wires for the door locks , the steering column, the gas tank
ParticularWhole9433@reddit
My boat uses the same motor as a Honda Odyssey but instead of the basic pan, the wires, the door locks, the steering column, and the gas tank, it just has a second motor from a Honda Odyssey. This makes it superior to a Honda Odyssey.
Final_Instance_8542@reddit
Same but different
Danielle_is_the_hole@reddit
Same platform
SpicyCommenter@reddit
agreed! Driving my brother’s minivan, I was amazed at how soft but responsive the suspension and chassis are. Makes me want to rally it
FatherIncoming@reddit
Especially when you shut off the vtec with the aftermarket part and get all 6 cylinders all the time. I love my odyssey.
DeepWeekend1810@reddit
Vtec isn't the the cylinder deactivation is called. Vtec is the adjustable cams.
FatherIncoming@reddit
You're right I bypassed the VCM my bad.
Cynyr36@reddit
It'll reactivate all the cylinders if you press the gas pedal a bit, so that's not what the VCM muzzlers are doing. They prevent the oil intrusion and burn and eventually fucking up the spark plugs and getting misfires.
FatherIncoming@reddit
Interesting, when I was reading about it when I installed it it said it detects the coolant temperature because that was what determined when the variable cylinder control started and it just sends a reading that never tells the computer the coolant hits the correct temp.
Cynyr36@reddit
Yes, thats how the VCM muzzlers work. The csr normally will reactivate the off cylinders if you ask for power. So it's not like the VCM muzzler will mean the car gains power. Mayber a tiny bit better response between cruise and boogie.
chillaxtion@reddit
I think there’s didn’t have the shutoff. My pilot doesn’t

HydroWrench@reddit
It's almost like they knew they could "rebrand" the platform to something the market "wanted" and make it perform worse in almost every metric because of it, and still call it a win.
Kawasaki@reddit
Minivans sit too high. Wagons are the way!
HairstylistRenee@reddit
As a kid, I always felt sorry for the other kids whose parents had station wagons. Now they’ve just been replaced with SUVs. Still too big and still too ugly.
dalekaup@reddit
I work at a place that repairs things including TVs. A guy came to pick up a repaired TV with his pickup 'truck' and it wouldn't fit in the bed. He came back with his wife's Volvo station wagon and it was no problem.
No-Fox-9607@reddit
It wasn’t a real truck then. Mavericks, Renegades and Ridgelines aren’t trucks. My F350 will have no issue carrying the entire neighborhoods TV’s and if I run out of room, the 35’ gooseneck will take care of it.
Cynyr36@reddit
Your f350 and a minivan fit pretty much the same number of tvs unless you start stacking them up.
No-Fox-9607@reddit
But the mini van can’t pull a covered trailer full of TV’s. I’m not dissing the mini van, my entire childhood was spent in an 80’s van (I’m old) and we had one as adults for years. Just funny people comparing vans to REAL trucks like they’re equals.
reidft@reddit
Don't underestimate the towing capacity of v6 minivans. The 2010 Caravan has a towing capacity of almost 4,000lbs. Even my 4 banger Optima towed an enclosed trailer with all my earthly possessions plus my motorcycle and still cruised at 75.
No-Fox-9607@reddit
Damn, you put that Kia to work. I can respect the gotta get it moved mentality. How hot was your trans and brakes after that trip?
reidft@reddit
Wasn't much elevation change but it was an 800 mile one-shot trip. I put an extra trans cooler on before leaving and didn't notice any wonkiness.
PoisonIvyCrotch@reddit
Was it a maverick or something? My 75” tv fit in the bed of my extended cab truck no problem

Old-guy64@reddit
SUVs are station wagons. Wearing high heels.
WuTangwhite426@reddit
And 4wd
DefrockedWizard1@reddit
and without the cargo space
Old-guy64@reddit
My Explorer has as much space behind the seats as my dad’s old Country Squire did.
And for five people, I can get a weeks worth of gear INSIDE the vehicle without resorting to a roof rack or a hitch platform. Unlike the minivan, I also have 4WD, which is very nice when Kansas decides it’s winter.
A mini van might get me to work in the snow. My SUV will get me to work in the snow.
Jacksons-Pond@reddit
Snow is a great reason to take the day off
Old-guy64@reddit
Personally, I agree. But as a nurse, I really need to be where I’m supposed to be. And while I like vans, they don’t generally have all-wheel drive.
Downtown_Reward_6339@reddit
Same result if you want to take them for a run.
Own-Secret-6523@reddit
And, apparently the USA loves "high heels".
Old-guy64@reddit
Indeed, for me and the work I do, those “heels” are 4WD. And I must get to work when it snows.
Not all my patients will get to treatment due to the snow. But I will be there unless the clinic closes.
alphamammoth101@reddit
Not really, a wagon wearing high heals would be something like the Subaru Outback or Volvo XC series.
PacketFiend@reddit
I love my Outback. People call us an SUV, but it's really a stationwagon.
Mjarf88@reddit
True. My wife had a 2015 Outback. It could fit a huge fridge in the back. That car had a huge cargo capacity and it was a tank on winter roads. She currently drives a 2020 Outlander PHEV and is happy with it, but her next car will likely be the new EV Outback.
Counting-Tiles4567@reddit
The newer ones are bloated, tumescent carcasses getting glacially motivated by a wheezing NA can-of-marbles 4 cylinder that vaguely resemble their wagon ancestors. They are none other than an abomination wrought to curse every entrance ramp and passing lane, and carved to all Trailside parking the world over. You ain't no car person. You a dead ass scrub.
151Ways@reddit
Now, who knows?
borth1782@reddit
2020 and onwards Volvo V60 is one of the best looking wagons in history. Just oozes class
jbpsign@reddit
Love my Outback. It about as wagonish as you're going to get these days.
supersonicx01@reddit
I really want a station wagon, but the majority are highly overran and need serious money to bring it back up to over 80% life. I have my eye on one, it's the Toyota Crown Signia. Hate the price, but like the model. The year I want to get is the 2025 model. It doesn't have the majority of the Ai BS, but at the same time, I hate it because Toyota had to follow the leader in locking out certain things that a regular independent mechanic will not have any access for repairs. Only dealer level will be able to fix the last barrier in repairs
Superhereaux@reddit
Fret not! The modern “crossover SUV” is literally a station wagon with a new name so people don’t have to say they drive a station wagon.
They’re alive and well, and next to pickup trucks, probably the best selling vehicles out there.
keithrc@reddit
Nope. Higher center of gravity, don't drive like a sedan. Maybe that's not important to you, but it is to those of us who are pissed off we can no longer buy an affordable wagon.
Superhereaux@reddit
Higher than a sedan, sure, but lower than a traditional body on frame, full size SUV
Most crossovers are based on similar unibody hatchbacks, just with a higher ride height. First that comes to mind is the older Volvo V70 (Versatile) wagon from 25 years ago, the XC70 (Xross Country) was the same vehicle with black bumpers, fender flares and an increased ride height. All were AWD but the V70 had it as an option as well.
Mazda has their Mazda3 hatchback, and then they have the same car, the Mazda CX-30, which is essentially the same car but with black bumpers, fender flares and an increased ride height.
Some may argue a hatchback and station wagons are two completely different styles of vehicles, but most would say it’s the same thing but one is a compact, the other a midsize.
FishFingerAnCustard@reddit
I don’t think you understand what a wagon is and why a jacked up abomination is not a suitable replacement.
A wagon is a full size saloon/sedan, however the roofline of the cabin remains a consistent height until the rear bumper, where it then heads vertically down. Some have a single hinge point and the entire rear panel, trail lights and all rises for a big rectangular opening, others have hinge top and bottom so the lower portion becomes a bench.
This configuration keeps all the handling, low rise height, aerodynamics, 5+ people in comfort and RWD that saloons enjoy while being able to cart 2400x1200 sheets.
A hatch is a similar style, but are based on the compact, fwd, small engine/light weight, kids only in rear set settup.
A crossover is the worst of all of the above with none of the pro’s.
whysaddog@reddit
Subaru outback. It's a wagon. Not an suv
151Ways@reddit
I own both (a wagon and minivan). Terrific combo. And I love driving both, though the van is more refined. But the wagon is quite spirited.
crookedledder@reddit
Crossover SUV's are basically 4wd wagons. I don't see a problem.
SovietPatrickStar@reddit
It’s happening in Europe too, except the wagons that still exist, have taken over the saloon spot. Nobody really makes saloon cars anymore. There are like 5 models I can name from the top of my head.
Own-Secret-6523@reddit
I have never heard the term "saloon" car before. Being from the USA I would expect a "saloon" car to have bar stools, beer on tap, and big screen tvs.
SovietPatrickStar@reddit
Saloon is what you call sedan in the US. It’s a British vs American English thing. Being none of both, I kinda use whatever I’ve gotten used to hoping people understand what I am saying.
Wagons are called Estate on British for example.
OldeWorldWays@reddit
Variants/estates/wagons are far superior to the saloon !
My parents had their 66 Dodge Coronet wagon shipped to Europe for our stay in Italy and Germany in the late 60s/early 70s and as a kid I remember crossing the channel via Hovercraft with it to England where my cousins hadn't seen such a large car in person.
My 04 VW Jetta/Bora Tdi wagon/variant/estate/kombi is more of a scale model in comparison but I don't have 5 kids to carry either.
Zestyclose_Panda_886@reddit
My parents had a Mazda 6 wagon that was a manual. It was kind of fun.
nadanutcase@reddit
They were useful, but the problem with most wagons (at least the old school ones) was that they were body on frame construction which made them pretty heavy, resulting in poor mileage.
twelfthfantasy@reddit
Subaru turning their wagons into SUVs ca. 2010 ruined the brand for me.

Till the geadgaskets go again
MostlyBrine@reddit
Head gaskets are not an issue for the EJ30R engine. I have two vehicles with that engine. The head gasket never failed, I replaced it anyway on both, because at 250k I wanted to do a valve job. The biggest problem is the oil leaks, between the timing cover and the engine block, due to rubber O-rings getting brittle. The head gasket is eight bolts away from the timing cover. It will take another 10-15 years or 250k miles for the 3.0H6 to happen again. Takes $150 in parts and same spare time to fix. The oil leak is something that any 20yo engine will suffer from. Especially on the horizontal boxer engines. I have seen enough newer Porches smoking while idling from the oil dripping from the valve covers to the exhaust manifold. I am rebuilding now a 2008 Honda J35 engine with 250k miles. My 2001 Toyota Sienna had the same issue that I had fixed in 2019.

I've had both a minivan and a full-size wagon. Both were awesome people/equipment movers. The wagon would have towed most anything with its 350 4 barrel. Both get high marks for comfort. The wagon had R12 air conditioning and never even needed a recharge over the years. The minivan had a little 3.3 but I'm pretty sure I was getting 25 mpg on the highway with all the kids along.

Along that same line, a Maverick or Ridgeline is all the tfuck most pickup buyers need.

The daily rental from Home Depot is the only truck 90%+ of people need. Once or twice a year to move stuff....that's it.
other_view12@reddit
Let's see. Drive 30 miles to rent a truck to drive 30 miles back to use the truck then another 30 miles to return the truck and another 30 miles to get home.
That was a huge waste of gas and time. Doing it once a month seems horrific to me and well worth getting the right vehicle the first time.
Hulk_Hogans_Toupee@reddit
Cool.
Let me finance it for 84 months at $1000 a month and barely be able to afford to pop my BumperNutz on it.

So you're a member of the 5% that actually use a truck for....truck uses.

You actually have sense.
other_view12@reddit
Do you work hard to be a jerk, or does it come naturally to you?
Lawineer@reddit
Eh, once you have a pickup, you can’t imagine life without one.
I got a 2500 for a daily plus tow vehicle. Then I got a dedicated tow vehicle (f550) that stayed hooked to the trailer permanently. I kept the 2500 because it just has too much utility. Mind you, I didn’t have a pickup for about 20 years before this, since college (where it had a ton of utility).
WuTangwhite426@reddit
Maverick is not a truck lol.
NoLawAtAllInDeadwood@reddit
And most don't need a truck at all. Any size pickup truck is worse than almost any car or SUV in almost every criteria that matters for driving/utility/cost.
MostlyBrine@reddit
If a pickup truck is so much worse, why are people still buying them? Maybe because they’re good at something that you cannot figure out, because you do not have that need? I started many years ago with a compact sedan. After we had a kid, we added a minivan. The sedan was replaced by a station wagon, then the station wagon was replaced by a crossover, then another station wagon was added. Last month I purchased a Ridgeline, as our use cases have evolved. None of these vehicles were new, they are all paid off, the extra insurance is peanuts compared to the convenience of having the right vehicle for the right need, when you need it. All of them can be use to putter around town or get groceries. One are better suited than others for specific purposes. I would like a small EV for the cost of the comute, however the math does not work for me at this time. Maybe in the next few years, something will come along and one of the other vehicles will be exchanged for an EV. Most likely the crossover.
Hulk_Hogans_Toupee@reddit
People buy trucks, get them lifted, put bumper nutz on them, etc.
They buy crewcabs with tiny short tailbeds that can barely hold a fucking Yeti cooler.
They are not using it for anything, aside from testosterone replacement.
MostlyBrine@reddit
People buy muscle cars that cannot fit anything in their trunk, have them lowered, cut the cats and make them louder.
Teenagers buy ancient Civics, double their value by replacing the exhaust and scrape the asphalt. All for the same endocrinological reason. Is undeniable that some people are overcompensating something. Trucks are not excepted from that rule. Nor are the Teslas or the BMW.
I heard from a good source, that the concept for the Tesla Roadster was very simple: if we want to be successful, we need to change the image of the EV from the one of the golf cart or the Prius. We need something that screams testosterone and not granola bars.
Hulk_Hogans_Toupee@reddit
All true, but there are a HELL of a lot more trucks on the roads than the examples you provided.
MostlyBrine@reddit
True. Because most trucks are still work vehicles.
pineapplepj@reddit
This is untrue unfortunately, there's some crazy stat that the majority of truck drivers don't even tow once a year. Plus all the completely clean scratch free beds on brand new trucks you see. Maybe 2 in 10 is a work truck around here (southern US), it's definitely treated as more of a 'man status' thing
tinpants44@reddit
In some areas you're not a "man" if you aren't driving a pickup. It's mandatory equipment.
nadanutcase@reddit
I agree. I bought a lightly used '22 Silverado to replace a much older F250 I did need to plow snow... but its so damned BIG it feels like I'm driving a semi truck.
DeepWeekend1810@reddit

udonkittypro@reddit
Agreed. But the fact that they look like... a minivan, that is enough to dissuade me. And many others. But still, usage wise, I fully agree.
TheGravyMachine@reddit
I love our 2008 Toyota Sienna with automatic doors. It has been the best car I will ever own. 202K and still going strong.
3dprintedthingies@reddit
Yep. Save the money and rent a u haul when you need to tow something. It will be salty in the moment but the once every couple of years or once a year you need it more than makes up the difference.
Or just have an old yard dog as your doing dumb stuff truck and use the minivan for the family. It's a shame what old trucks have gotten to price wise, but only the GM, Ford and Dodge SUVs are good for towing anything, and that's only certain models.
I use my 93 wrangler for towing stuff all the time, but even I recognize it's not a good tow vehicle. Most CSUVs are awful tow vehicles.
Ok-Entertainment5045@reddit
Towing? I pull our 26’ camper with our Yukon XL, I wouldn’t try that with a minivan
RepairBudget@reddit
The average American never tows anything.
Ok-Entertainment5045@reddit
90% of everyone I know tows something at least once a year. I guess it just depends on where you live and who you hang out with.
HedonisticFrog@reddit
Congrats, your friends are the vast minority of vehicle owners. Most truck owners don't even use the truck bed very often.
Beef_Candy@reddit
I got a truck because for about the first 7 years I owned it, I was running up and down dirt lease roads daily and needed something that would (hopefully) hold up. I've now had it 15 years and while I don't tow with it much anymore, I do tow from time to time. It's been paid off for over a decade, and never given me any issues whatsoever. I'd feel financially irresponsible for getting rid of it at this point, as I would like to get another 5 years out of it.
We bought a navigator L because when we became a blended family of 6, we needed something to haul the kids, dog and all our shit around, and be able to either pull our utility trailer + herd of ATVs around, or travel trailer. In the event we decide we won't do much towing anymore, we'll probably still keep running the navigator; We also are at a point in our lives where I want all the creature comforts and premium materials that come with a luxury SUV. I want the 32 way adjustable massaging seats in the first and second row. I want the 30-something speaker revel Ultima sound. I want the plush electronically-controlled air ride. I want >400-horsepower. I want the self-driving blue cruise.
Sure a minivan would probably be suitable if we didn't tow, but if we feel like we deserve more from our vehicle and can afford it... Who cares? The circle jerk around here is insane.
And for the record before some smart-ass comments come through, the navigator was paid in full the first month of ownership. We do not do debt.
HedonisticFrog@reddit
The rare exceptions always chime in to defend their purchases. You're still the exception. Most truck and SUV owners aren't like you.
The vast majority of people who buy huge SUVs and trucks don't need their capabilities, they just want an excessively large vehicle for the sake of having a large vehicle.
Beef_Candy@reddit
Eh, Let people live.
HedonisticFrog@reddit
I'm not stopping you from living. Just stop acting like the people who buy them actually need their capabilities.
ParticularWhole9433@reddit
No one needs a car at all, they could just find a different job, live somewhere else, find a different set of hobbies, and walk to work.
HedonisticFrog@reddit
You sure are extremely defensive about your vehicle choice. You're still avoiding my point. People aren't buying huge trucks and SUVs because it enables their lifestyle, they buy them because they want enormous vehicles. Take my father for example, he already has a Suburban which is obnoxiously large already. He wanted to buy a truck and I asked why. He said to haul things. I asked him what he would haul and he couldn't answer, because he never needs to haul anything. If he ever needed bulk supplies he'd just have them delivered anyways. He's 74, he's not loading and unloading raw bulk materials. He wanted it purely for image, not capability.
ParticularWhole9433@reddit
I drive a stick shift 2003 matrix xrs . Explain to me how I am being defensive about it.
HedonisticFrog@reddit
You're just proving my point and agreeing with me now anyways. My point was that the vast majority of people who buy massive trucks and SUVs don't utilize their capabilities, and they only care about the image and feeling superior to others. Why are you even arguing with me when you agree with me?
ParticularWhole9433@reddit
I haven't proved your point nor I have agreed with you. Why are you so annoying?

I wasn't, I don't care if people need them or not. When I no longer need their capabilities, I will still buy them without hesitation as long as they continue to provide me with what I expect from a vehicle.
HedonisticFrog@reddit
You are though, by talking about how much you personally use them, when clearly you're the exception. The vast majority of SUV and truck owners don't tow anything. Nobody was talking about the people who actually use towing capabilities.

I tow my 16 foot boat with my odyssey all the time! It's surprisingly smooth.
Ok-Entertainment5045@reddit
As long as you stay within your payload capacity minivans tow fine. I could not tow my 5600lb camper with a minivan.
FatherIncoming@reddit
Yeah me either haha. it would literally tear my ass end off! My boat with trailer is just over 1000lb, I think the heaviest I ever towed with it was just under 1 ton and that was a massive dump run and I was pushing the motor to what I would consider its limit with the hills around me.

KingKenny-777@reddit
I hear this take often but I feel like they are vastly different. I much prefer cars and I have one for the summer but I live in a snowy area with rough roads as many people do. I have an suv for the ground clearance and a stronger suspension. A minivan beyond being ugly doesn’t have the ground clearance and it’s just way too big for me.
Informal_Wanker8349@reddit
100% Agree. Minivans have a very high 'Utility' value.
mikebunchkin3727@reddit
I’m on this one too. I just hate mini vans like everyone else.
They’re hugely practical
Lawineer@reddit
I feel like those full size vans were better. You got a real engine and actual storage space rather than the minivan. They weren’t much bigger. Certainly not big enough that it became a problem to drive around town.
McBeaster@reddit
Wow never seen this take on the internet before. I'm sure now that you have pointed it out, people's buying habits will change!
kingofthesofas@reddit
This is true but try convincing someone that just doesn't want a minivan to get one.
antaphar@reddit
Yeah I’ve had this conversation with multiple people. They just think they’re not “cool”. As if anybody looks at someone driving a minivan and thinks they’re not cool. Or sees them driving their VW Atlas or Kia Telluride and thinks that they are cool. I think in general people think that others think about them more than they do.
Personally I couldn’t imagine driving anything other than a minivan with kids. We can afford a nice 3 row SUV like an Escalade, but the sliding doors are clutch (sooo much easier to load/unload in tight parking lots), the lower floor makes it easier for small kids to get in on their own, and kids trash vehicles while they’re young. I’d feel bad about an Escalade getting trashed but not so much our Kia Carnival.
RegularNo1963@reddit
If I spend a vast chunk of my savings on some perishable item like car, besides practical features I want this thing to look nice to me. I will never get a minivan unless I'm hard pressed to get one because I don't like how they look like.
tonio2004@reddit
yea most people don’t care except for the person who has to buy the car. So it does matter especially at certain price points. I would rather have an Escalade V or Explorer ST over any minivan
antaphar@reddit
I chose a minivan over an Escalade V. I was close to getting one because the LT4 doesn’t have the issues that the regular 6.2L has. But I do have a Corvette Z06 as a weekend car so I was ok driving a more boring car with the kids. And after I saw how much kids trash the vehicle I’m even more glad I didn’t get the Escalade.
kingofthesofas@reddit
I would love to buy my wife a minivan but she is the one that is like nope to even test driving one. WYGD so I got her a big SUV.
antaphar@reddit
My wife was the same but we compromised with the Carnival bc it looks more like an SUV than a minivan.

WhatADunderfulWorld@reddit
My problem is I actually got an SUV for size but actually go off road for my hobbies now. I fish, cap, go to desserts. It’s awesome. Even today I went fishing and got a half mile close than a minivan could with a SUV.
Also SUV handles way better at highway speeds.
I am not a soccer mom. I actually am a guy that needs a modern SUV.
My only problem with SUVs if that lost people don’t need them. They need a hatchback but they just look dumb. I appreciate VE brought back the van. You could buy a great Corvette for the same price.
We need cheap car again. No touchscreen. Just Apple CarPlay and back up camera. Make it lightweight. Turbo inline 4. Make the trunk ugly. The engine bay ugly. The wheels ugly.

X5 is a crossover because mechanically its a 5 series sedan on stilts.

AppropriateDeal1034@reddit
That's the biggest pile of bollocks I've ever heard, and I've been on Reddit for quite a while.
mrsclausemenopause@reddit
So do you disagree that a x5 is a 5 series or that a Jimny is on a truck chassis?
AppropriateDeal1034@reddit
I disagree with both because they're both utter bollocks.
mrsclausemenopause@reddit
The first gen X5 was pretty much a E39 and the current X5, 5 series, and 7 series all use the same CLAR platform. Its a car crossing over to SUV proportions.
But you can just say bollocks again without defining SUV or crossover or, considering monocoque vs body on frame construction
AppropriateDeal1034@reddit
SUV is sports utility vehicle, it's supposed to be a monocoque, body on frame would be trick / off-roader like the land rover disco.
No_Win7658@reddit

What is a minivan but a big station wagon?
Civil-Departure-512@reddit
Got my second minivan after listening to everyone say that minivans are better than trucks and SUVs. There isn’t 1 thing my Town&Country did better than my Silverado or Q7. It was worse at everything.
-----seven-----@reddit
worse at handling, fuel economy, visibility, and cargo space? really now?
Excellent-Stretch-81@reddit
They can be worse in some situations. I haven't seen any minivans with four-wheel steering, and EV minivans almost don't exist at all, at least not in North America, so the 450+mile range I can get out of an EV truck would require an ICE minivan. I haven't found visibility to be a problem, since the 360° cameras and proximity sensors do a great job of covering what might otherwise be blind spots. And I do like being able to transport oil, brake fluid, and old gasoline outside the passenger compartment when going to the hazardous waste facility.
I do like the idea of a minivan for enclosed cargo capacity and low deck height, along with fitting a bit better in tight parking spaces, but those aren't good enough reasons for me to keep burning gasoline. If good, long-range EV minivans start hitting the market, I'd happily reconsider, but until then, the benefits of minivans don't outweigh the drawbacks for me.
Civil-Departure-512@reddit
I wasn’t able to get past 20mpg with that van. 18 was its normal average (almost entirely highway too). I could get 23 all day long with the Silverado and get 25-27 with the Q7. The van handled like a cruise ship with its stabilizers out. Wasn’t hard to put it on 2 wheels. Never had that issue with the Silverado and definitely can’t do that with the q7. Visibility was about the same. The van had shit mirrors and parking lots were dangerous without the rear camera. Cargo space? Sure if you’re the only one in it. Couldn’t fit more than 3 suitcases behind the 3rd row and could only fit 6 people if one row didn’t have legs. Silverado could fit 6 and everything needed for a wedding plus luggage. And the Q7 fits 5 better than the van ever could.
-----seven-----@reddit
how old was this van? any newer van shouldnt be getting such piss mileage or have those issues
Civil-Departure-512@reddit
2012 so a previous generation (but the Dodge version went till 6yrs ago). Only had 25k miles on it when I got it.
MostlyBrine@reddit
Why did you bought a second one after having already owned a minivan? Somehow you trusted “everyone” against your own experience?
Civil-Departure-512@reddit
My first one was an 04 Town&Country when I was in high school. Figured things had improved since I was a teenager.
MostlyBrine@reddit
The minivan size did not change much since 2004. It still fits the same usage. A Silverado is a whole different animal. I have a minivan since forever and I just got a pickup truck for whatever the minivan does not work anymore. If you can only have a vehicle, get the one that works most of the time and borrow or rent something else as needed.
Civil-Departure-512@reddit
I thought maybe they’d drive better with the added power and lower ride height. Still handled like a cruise ship, turned like a barge, blew over like a sail boat, and needed an extra 40 or so hp to get anywhere resembling quick. The Silverado did everything better from fuel economy to carrying people and cargo.
MostlyBrine@reddit
My minivan fit great when it had to handle five adults and a toddler, with all the “auxiliary support equipment”. I still use it to carry anything smaller than 27” height (it can fit flat 4’x8’ plywood sheets inside) however the pickup is better for three adults, the taller loads, dirty stuff, camping gear and towing. The handling and fuel economy is almost identical.
Civil-Departure-512@reddit
I couldn’t fit 6 in mine unless 2 people gave up their legs. And a definitely couldn’t carry the luggage for more than 3 people behind the 3rd row. I was only able to eek out 20mpg a couple times but 18 was where it was always at. I could get 23 out of the Silverado all day long.
MostlyBrine@reddit
I can feel your frustration. Definitely not enough room on the 3rd row. My folks liked better the 3rd row, which made easier loading and unloading. I also “promoted” my son to the 2nd row because it was easier to load/unload the car seat through the sliding door.
wyo_rocks@reddit

TrueKing9458@reddit
Everyday
Friendly-Inspector71@reddit
What are you towing that you need an SUV for?
The average person isn't towing anything.
A small hatchback can pull like 1,2 tons.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
A car trailer.
Is that supposed to be 1.2 tons, so 2400lbs? I don't think there's many small hatches rated for that sold in the U.S. And even then I wouldn't want to, towing with a FWD is sketchy, and worse when the weights are close.
I also tow quite a bit with my sedan, but it's a RWD based full size.
Friendly-Inspector71@reddit
The US has a weird obsession with putting a lot of weight onto the hitch, requiring quite beefy rear suspension.
Our 1.3 ton (2800 lbs) camping trailer is balanced to put between 75 and 100kg (165-220lbs) on the hitch.
The only problem for our sedan was steep hills, but revving it out in 3rd was part of the fun for me.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
Yes we do, because we understand that putting more weight on the hitch makes it more stable. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Lbx1_sjXIfU
A general rule of thumb is a minimum of 10%, your example is well under that.
Friendly-Inspector71@reddit
I know about such demonstartions, its also about weight distribution to the centre and not at the front or rear.
The 10 percent is a good guideline, but a lot of hitch weight, makes it hard to move the trailer by hand and influences the cars stability a lot more.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
You can't lift 280lbs?
And yes, that's the point, you don't have enough car. If you had enough car you could put 280+ on the hitch and it'd be more stable.
Friendly-Inspector71@reddit
If I really need to tow much more than 3000lbs, it's a good idea to have a multi axle trailer which will be more stable in general without more hitch weight.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
That's not how it works.
Beginning_Key2167@reddit

cannedrex2406@reddit
Not really. The Ineos is the closest replacement to the OG defender, but it's selling terribly and the factory is stopped to allow for existing stock to sell.
In the mean time, the new Defender is flying off dealer lots and JLR is genuinely needing to keep up with demand
ishouldworkatm@reddit
Problem of the ineos is it’s price by trying too hard to be perfect, and also new brand with no vision on reliability and spare parts

quit_fucking_about@reddit
Every modern vehicle sold in America is a 100,000 mile car at a minimum unless you're unlucky enough to get an outlier or a dogshit owner. Even the brands I would never fuck with like Chrysler will get you where you're going for 100k minimum. If they don't, it's usually your fault.
cizmainbascula@reddit
The bar is in hell with 100k miles lol.
I’m live in north America now but back “home” in Europe a car started to be considered higher mileage (but not necessarily a piece of junk because of it, mind you) after 200k+ miles.
But there were mostly diesels which generally last longer so there’s that

Not sure why you got downvoted. 100,000 used to be a "goal" in the old days. Like, in the 1990s and before, 100,000 was good enough.
Nojopar@reddit
Depends on how much you drive. The DoE has (had?) somewhere on its website the average number of miles driven by different driver demographics. The overall average is like 15k miles a year for people in the 34-55 (ish) range. So 100k is about 6 1/2 years of vehicle ownership. A quick google suggests that the average years of car ownership would be between 8 and 8.5 years, with popular models reaching 10ish years in ownership. That's obviously not the 'age' of the car itself, but for most new car buyers, 100k miles is going to be 75% of the 'life' of that vehicle for them.

How much of it is the engine genuinely Epsteining itself with no possibility of the owner preventing it. How often is it preventable by checking the rapidly falling oil level? My car wants oil at 2000km (add 1L) so I add 1L.

Yes maintenance needs to be considered.
But we just did an engine on a 2021 Elantra with 102,000 kms. It had 1 missed service record on the carfax. It could and likely was done some where that just didn't report it to carfax. Point made Unless the oil was never changed to begin with... The car probably burned all the oil. Cause it was a piece of junk.
tw4200@reddit
Checking the oil every 2,000 kms on modern normal everyday cars is not realistic or needed. Maybe on high mileage units. Or cars that burn oil. Not normally required.
sports811man@reddit
Agree. Had a 2015 Tucson, over consumed oil starting around 60k miles, had it checked at least 5x, conveniently never qualified for a new engine. Amongst other issues (backup cam, vacuum pump, heat, etc). Got $6k for it at 98k miles a couple months ago and that felt like a win considering it was undriveable.
tw4200@reddit
Yeah they find anyway to say no it doesn't apply or find any reason to say no.
ThePoltageist@reddit
If Hyundais and iOS grenaded themselves at 60-80k miles that’s within warrantee, they would be the literal best buy on the market if they never made it out of warrantee because then you get out of warrantee at 100k with an engine with only 20-40k on them
MostlyBrine@reddit
That if you’re not denied warranty coverage on the reason that you didn’t check your oil, which they said it should last a certain number of miles.
Clydesdale_paddler@reddit
In general, yes, but you also have to look at how the company handles the outliers.
Ford said fuck you to anyone unlucky enough to buy the 2.0 Ecoboost engines that die at 70k. Toyota gave me a new frame for my truck for free.
croppedcross3@reddit
I had a 2014 focus that i sold for essentially scrap value with 80k miles because the transmission kept going out. Fixed under warranty once at 30k, fixed on my cost at 70k, and then it went out again at 80.
PossibleMechanic89@reddit
Did Toyota have an option with those Tacoma frames? I thought their hand was forced.
Clydesdale_paddler@reddit
They did not have an option, but they've always settled class actions out of court in a way that benefits consumers even though they could probably save money by settling with the plaintiffs exclusively. I know they're trying to protect their reputation, but Ford doesnt seem to care about that even.
MountainFace2774@reddit
That was true 10-20 years ago. I think most new cars are fine, but there are some absolute dogshit powertrains being sold now that sacrifice reliability to get another .5 mpg.
Anecdotal, but I know of three different people in my life that owned Chryslers made in the last 10 years that the transmissions didn't make it past 50,000 miles.
Aye_Davanita12@reddit
I dunno.
Kia/Hyundai with their grenading engines isn’t a good look.
I’d never ever touch a Chrysler product with the Ecodiesel, I personally have known 2 people whose engines have required replacement at the 100000KM mark.
Small_Sight@reddit
I own two (gen 3) ecodiesels and they’re both over 100k miles and they’re my favorite engine I’ve ever owned. Never once even a CEL on either of them. But the gen 3 is 80%+ completely redesigned from the gen 2
Many-Pomegranate-33@reddit
25+ year master cert auto tech here.
The longer oil change intervals, lack of education about what actually needs attention vs what is a ripoff, and the general way that automakers do not address typical break points in their vehicles adds up to a lot of vehicles not making 80k before theyre oil burners, have dropped a trans or both.
Theres a lot of factors that go into it, but to say they easily make 100k is a lie.
quit_fucking_about@reddit
I was a 12 year master cert auto tech. Not as long as you, but long enough my take isn't that of an armchair expert.
In my opinion, we're the worst judges of expected reliability, because the nature of our work biases us towards interacting with the minority of vehicles that experience significant problems early, while it's still worth bringing the vehicle to a shop.
A survey of 50,000 junked cars nationwide was performed by Junk Car Medics in 2023. The average vehicle was junked at 156,000 miles.
There's definitely a high enough volume of vehicles failing before that mark, it kept us in business. But we're working on the outliers, not the norm.
Many-Pomegranate-33@reddit
Yeah thats true.
I have lots of dealer experience in there too so thats lots of very early big issue problems. Its easy when you see the worst of issues popping up

Honda civic with big fucking wing and a spray can paint job? Fuck yeah, this guy doesn't have much money right now, but he's personalizing his ride and HE thinks it's cool.
It doesn't matter if it's cheap/poorly executed or a 5 figure mod, if you take the time to modify your car because you're an enthusiasts, you're a rad ass dude.
JCFT_Collins@reddit
adding ducks the the dash or your Jeep Wrangler? GTFOH with that stupid shit.
make-j8@reddit
How about not being a nuisance?
Most modifications to the exhaust sistem are most likely that. Where I live, eastern EU, commie blocks everywhere, if someone drives at 3am with a "modded" car it sounds like they're right there with you, in the room. Sounds resonates between the concrete structures that go on for miles.
No thanks. Those modifications are illegal with dual purpose: environment (what ever, a few modded cars don't make any significant impact) and stopping noise pollution. If your car wakes up half a neighborhood just because you're an "enthusiast" you would be just another asshole.
sendme_your_cats@reddit
That's why my exhaust is valved lol
Yeah sure man, if you have a straight pipe you're a fucking cunt. That is one mod that isn't ideal, almost every other mod I'm thinking of doesn't add excessive sound. It's about expression.

PyroFreak22@reddit
Not all of us are straight piped by choice. I don't have the money to fix my exhaust 🙁 please know that not all of us are getting joy from being a nuisance to others.
keithrc@reddit
So of the hundreds of potential ways to mod your car, you picked the one that is a nuisance to focus on?
jerik22@reddit
So what about a modded civic with a DB less than a stock GT3rs? Just a personal experience, my dad’s friend has a gt3rs stock, my friend has a straight piped civic. With the Apple Watch Ultra the civic from 2 metres away was 102DB the gt3rs was 106 db. Who would you want driving by if you had to choose? If you can buy from the dealer a car louder than a straight piped 4 banger, then the “modded” car is not the problem here.
doc_55lk@reddit
A loud engine/exhaust needs to sound good and be on a car that hauls ass to properly justify its existence.
That's why it's okay on a GT3 RS but not on a clapped Civic.
MortadellaKing@reddit
MY 78 C10 with a 454ci V8 can barely get out of it's own way but sounds great with glass packs.
inflames797@reddit
Not to mention there are SIGNIFICANTLY more straightpiped/modded civics on the road than there are GT3RS's. It wasn't really a well thought out comparison in the first place.
doc_55lk@reddit
Yea
make-j8@reddit
OE exhausts and even AM street homologated exhausts have to meet strict sound regulations. At least in the EU (maybe in the US too, but I don't live there so I don't know). That means, under *normal* driving conditions they are reasonably quiet. GT3RS too.
How do I know? There are plenty of them in my city. They don't wake you up in the middle of the night from just driving around. Straight piped GolfRs with a bit o tweaked ECUs? They pop and bang at legal street speed continuously.
No matter where you live, even if the US has this whole freedom thing going on: your personal freedom ends where it starts infringing upon others freedom. I have the right to sleep at night, regardless of how you feel the need to express yourself via car mods.
akaian97@reddit
How can you call yourself a “car guy” with an opinion like that? You very much remind me of the age old saying: “Who needs enemies with friends like this?”

Weary-Astronaut1335@reddit
I don't get tailgated or merged into when driving my straight piped car.
I drive my car that's the same chassis with an unmodified exhaust people act like I'm not even there. I'll stick to being a nuisance.
make-j8@reddit
When people tailgate you it means they want to go faster. Let them do it, give them space, indicate you noticed, and maintain constant speed. No passing zone? Not your issue! Their license, their risk.
Also, merging is a technically the issue of the person merging, but you can still be courteous about it. Either speed up/down or switch lanes to give people space. FYI in some countries zipper merge is not an option, is mandatory, risking license suspension if caught.
Sounds to me like you just have some ego issues and you're looking for a cheap excuse.
Weary-Astronaut1335@reddit
None of my commute is on a highway. They can go around if they need to go more than the 10 over I'm already maintaining on city roads, in the lane I need to be in because I turn in 2 miles. Also my entire commute regularly has cops hiding out with radar guns. So no, I won't speed up either.
Giving space doesn't do anything when they don't use their mirrors or indicators.
Sounds like you've got an ego issue if you can't slow down for someone already going 45 in a 35 on city roads.

Problem is you jusr never know how it is executed. Are the brakes better in the Superchargerd Corvette, is the Ride on the lowrider still Safe? Dont get me wrong I Like modifying, but your examples without them being tested for safety emdanger Others imo.
Australians do it fine, you can Change a lot AS Long as you get it enginereed. Like the German TÜV with more freedom.
sendme_your_cats@reddit
I get where you're coming from, I'm not really against inspections or engineering approval. My point was more about the culture and philosophy behind car modification.
In America the rules generally put more responsibility on the owner instead of requiring approval for every modification. That gives people the freedom to experiment which sometimes leads to people learning how to fabricate stuff or tune their car out of the sheer passion. Having to get approval for every modification can stifle creativity and passion for the scene imo.
We already have laws against unsafe vehicles, bad brakes, shitty/rusty suspension, bald tires etc. There’s a difference between “unsafe” and “non-factory”, that's why I specified as long as it's not a danger to others!

Meanwhile the Model Y has so many other cars competing in its segment. I understand that SUVs are popular in America but come on not everyone has families. I want more EV sedans
Also every hotel should have EV chargers. Any place you have to sleep at should have chargers. It just makes sense.

Around 95% of pickup truck drivers don’t need a pickup truck. They need a car and a trailer. They don’t yet own that boat they said they needed to tow…
Wagons are superior to SUVs. Jacked up wagons are the best of both worlds if you need the clearance and awd.
SkeeterDan92@reddit
Bring back the small trucks!
Esoteric-Bibliotheca@reddit
To add on to this, in my experience the majority of truck owners also have no idea how to drive them.
Sure trucks have gotten bigger, but they still fit in parking stalls, I am exhausted with seeing these idiots with curb rubbed rear wheels and never perfectly in a parking stall. They are all liabilities and have no idea where their wheels, or front and rear bumpers are.
They claim being higher in the air makes them feel safer, yet they still can't see what the fuck is 3 feet in front of them.
I used to drive pickup trucks daily growing up on a farm and I shake my head at the sheer incompetence these truck drivers show. Its not hard, they just suck.
EnlargedChonk@reddit
"b.b.b.but a trailer is so inconvenient!" as if their *smaller* bed being 3 feet off the ground is more convenient. Even with an older ranger which had an actual longer bed and lower to the ground than modern "trucks" I was still using a trailer for things because it's just so much fucking easier to shovel gravel in and out of a platform 1 foot from the ground. The bed was useful but even with a bed a trailer was still better in some situations, and if you need a trailer anyway it can be used for most cases where a bed is needed. Shitty harbor freight trailers with walls added on ftw.
"but I do use my truck for X, Y, and Z" good you are minority that actually need a pickup
Now wanting a pickup is IMO a different story, if someone wants to blow their money on a worse vehicle in almost all aspects because the marketing has wormed into their brain then who am I to say no. As long as they're self aware that it's a want not a need. I just also have the right to point and laugh when I see people buying luxury trim "work" things as a fashion statement. It's like wearing "designer" carhartt collabs, it's not actually work wear, but it looks "tough" and "rugged" to people who don't do that kind of work, and it's amusing to me. especially when they complain of gas prices.

There's a lot to be said for a car and a trailer, I think more should do it that way.
That said, the amount of cars that can tow well has diminished. As has the amount of drivers that can manage a trailer.
Wagons are superior to crossovers, not true SUVs.
iHaveLotsofCats94@reddit
It's much more convenient to have a truck when I go get stuff for the house, go to the dump, or buy big objects. I would have to find somewhere to park an empty trailer that would sit unused the majority of the time.
Currently I have two cars and a truck. I swap between my car and my truck, and my SO has her hatchback. It's a great setup

> true SUVs.
As you might suspect I'm not american. For me "SUV" is anything that's shorter and taller than a wagon, and has 5 doors. The most stupidly massive SUV's are X5, XC90, Q8 and some newer ones like EV9. There are no, and have never been, any SUV's based on what's effectively a truck chassis but with 2-3 rows of seats and room for sports gear...
I know those existed in the US and were the original SUVs, but I don't think almost anyone (at least outside the US) uses the term to mean something based on a truck.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
To me, an American, a true SUV often shares it's chassis with a pickup.
There's of course grey area, like the Grand Cherokee, I'd consider that an SUV, but it doesn't have a pickup cousin and is unibody.
By cars I mean sedans, coupes, wagons, etc.
afops@reddit
Yeah I know, the whole "pickup truck is not a car" and "suv's are built on truck chassis" are both Americanisms. I'm aware of them but they make no sense outside the US. We call pickup trucks cars. And SUV's are almost without exceptions just normal cars, like X3/X5.
The term "crossover" is actually used, but to me that term doesn't really make much sense because I think the reason for it was just that it crossed that line between ur-SUV (truck based) and new ones? Where there are no other suvs than regular car-suvs it doesn't make much sense...
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
Europe has a some SUVs, Land Rovers, G-Wagons, etc..
afops@reddit
Yeah at least older LR (Defender and early Discovery) are body on frame. And we can get a US one of course (Tahoe, Suburban, whatever) but it's extremely rare because of the size of parking spots and the cost of gas...
Civil-Departure-512@reddit
The whole “just use a trailer” bit is a pain in the ass. Navigating parking lots with one isn’t worth the hassle and some parking lots just can’t handle trailers. Been doing the suv and a trailer route for a year now and I regret not getting a truck.
afops@reddit
The truck is a pain to use on a parking and uneconomic to drive all those 99/100 days you don’t transport anything though. (Esp in Europe where a parking space is typically 5m which is a foot smaller than the shortest f-150… )
Civil-Departure-512@reddit
I used to get better gas mileage with my truck than I did with the van that replaced it. And parking is tight here but it’s WAY easier to park a truck than anything with a trailer. People complain when you take up more than one spot and if you try to park as courteously, you get blocked in by people parking next to you and make it impossible to get out without having to undo your trailer and move it by hand.
afops@reddit
Yeah I just don’t go to parkings with the trailer usually. I go to throw stuff away, and to buy lumber or gravel and stuff but those stores are invariably drive through so you don’t need to park.
Civil-Departure-512@reddit
Taking the trailer home after using it or running the errand I need it for would add an extra 30min-1hr.

Most people don't actually need cars, especially in cities. They are just another convenience item that ironically creates everyone's least favorite inconvenience, traffic.
I do acknowledge safe & reliable public transit is lacking in a lot of cities, especially in the US. But if we were to focus our energy on that rather than self driving cars, then people that do actually enjoy the driving aspect of cars would have less traffic while those that just want to go from point A to Point B could do so without having to worry about the maintenance of a vehicle.
sprocketpropelled@reddit
I think EV’s are cool. Here’s why: your buddies aunt who hasn’t changed her oil in 18 months, with 3 screaming kids in the back seat just needs a car that works like an appliance does. Its turns on, turns off, plugs in and is mostly maintenance free. It’ll need tires and brakes like once in a while. Basically maintenance free in the day to day and thats one less stressor for the average person. For about 80% of folks who need basic transport, ev’s are a great option.
TopherMctopherson@reddit
This is another reason why ev's suck. It's giving people who don't actually want to drive a 2 ton death machine that they will loose focus in and crash. The amount of people on today's roads that want a self driving car so they can watch silly reels or "close a deal" while they drive is too damn high. If we just focused on clean & reliable public transit then these fucks can safely do whatever they want on the trolley while people that ACTUALLY want to drive can enjoy traffic free roads.
3dprintedthingies@reddit
Precisely. They will still make halo cars.
EVs are going to replace all of the worthless to society base model civics, Corollas, camries, sonics etc. Those cars are worthless from a gear head and societal perspective for anything other than point a to b.
Just saves more gas for the rest of us. They can't swing the price of gas as ridiculously if the demand just isn't there.
Electricity is the future and it's better for literally everyone involved.
PyroFreak22@reddit
My biggest issue with EVs is with them being silent. I've walked directly in front of some EVs while someone was trying to pull out of a parking spot because I had no idea the car was about to move. There's no way for a pedestrian to tell that the car is on. It can be a bit hazardous.

As a lifelong gearhead, I’ve been saying this for years. 90% of people on the road just want a mode of transportation from point A to point B.
Most people in my family would love it if they never had to fuel up at a gas station or go thru the hassle of taking it somewhere once every 18 months to get an oil change or service.
I love me some fast V8/V10/V12 cars, boosted engines, ceramic brakes, carbon fiber, the whole lot, but I wouldn’t mind an EV one bit for day to day use. I was a bit weary a decade ago, but like I figured, they’re getting better every year.
MrNimbus33@reddit
This is me. I have a supercharged v8 convertible that I drive for fun and on nice days. The EV is for all other times. We have 3 cars for between the 2 of us and the EV gets the most miles/year BY FAR. It's dirt cheap to maintain and charge.
Cautious_Clothes_285@reddit
I have an EV as a commuter, do about 25k kms per year with it. My wife has an EV SUV for mom/kid stuff. Does maybe 10-12k kms per year. We live outside a city, but have more than enough range for everything we would want to do.
I have an older diesel truck we use for other stuff, like towing the 5th wheel for camping or for other long distance trips where the EVs fall outside the range of practicality (most of the time, they don't, but every once in a while the stars align and the truck is the better choice).
I have a bunch of project cars and stuff, love engines. But for a daily it makes so much sense and even with financing we're net positive after fuel costs.
sprocketpropelled@reddit
Spot on. Its not for “us” the gearheads who like to tinker, build and modify everything ever. But for the average joe. They’re only getting better and better. I wouldn’t mind one for day to day stuff. Mostly just rolling around town and occasionally towing something here or there. An f150 lighting would be spectacular for about 1/2 of our landscape fleet. Moving guys and trailers around a reasonably small town, with the longest drive we do is maybe 50 miles one way.
dinmorsaecokkattig@reddit

sprocketpropelled@reddit
Eh, hard to say. I think the economies of scale and volume of EV’s being made has helped adoption and innovation, and could help bring costs down even further. I do think when we get a taste of the chinese variety of EV’s that will really kickstart it again.

100% agree with this. I love fun and engaging cars. For commuting, my EV is my favorite car ever. For some reason you think experimental EVs are perfectly trouble free.
MB - a tourist who knew absolutely nothing about EVs - launched the EQs with much fanfare and then they fell apart electronically. Some of the worst pieces of shit ever to be inflicted on the public and at staggering and unjustified prices. Kiae EVs were similarly either great or horrible. And usually great THEN horrible.
At the other extreme, the Chinese giants. Know lots about making EVs but virtually nothing about the 80% of the car that isn’t drivetrain. Those things are decomposing in dealers all over 🇦🇺. 2 days after delivery, in one poor bastard’s story.
keithrc@reddit
As opposed to every new entrant into the ICE car market, which are all solid and reliable from Day One? What's your point?
TheWhogg@reddit
I wouldn’t buy a car from someone who was gifted the plans to a 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer, figured out roughly how to make one, reached out to the cheapest and shittiest suppliers to source components and has limited experience on staff to diagnose the inevitable problems. In fact it would be such a f***ing idiotic thing to do that I would strenuously counsel anyone else to avoid doing so too. Nevertheless someone I know made that mistake and her car is now falling apart at 30,000mi.
What’s your point? Can you see how the converse might also apply?
oneofthosepimps@reddit
EV’s are cool but please do yourself a favor and lease one. Don’t buy one. Not yet. The EV batteries will not hold as much charge as the car gets older and will need replacement in 7-10 years and they are not cheap.

There’s plenty of 10 year old EVs out there with 250,000+ miles that still have 75%+ of their range.
EVs built today will likely be even better as battery management has improved
oneofthosepimps@reddit
I got this info from the service manager at my dealership. I hope he’s wrong, but he has first hand experience so it’s hard to dismiss his info.
MrRogersAE@reddit
I find it pretty easy to dismiss a single service managers opinion when it goes against dozens of articles and studies I’ve read on the subject.
Maybe the service manager has had unusual first hand experience.
Or maybe they see all the bad cases as a service manager which could very well be the minority, while the majority simply don’t bring their vehicles in because they don’t have a reason to.
Or maybe the service manager simply has an axe to grind on the subject. There’s a ton of people out there who are irrationally hostile to EVs simply because they’ve been manipulated by the fossil fuel industries propaganda campaign.
I bought an electric mower and one of my coworkers immediately yelled “YOURE NOT GONNA SAVE THE WORLD WITH THAT MOWER” like dude, I was just talking about how quiet it is. Nobody said a thing about the environment. Some people are soo brainwashed by the content they consume that they become advocates for the fossil fuel industry.
oneofthosepimps@reddit
You might be right on all accounts. I’m going to see how this whole EV thing plays out. I am not 100% sold just yet. I’ve only recently accepted Hybrids as an option for me. Time will tell.

Also charging your car at home is just so dang convenient. People talk about range anxiety, but waking up to a full tank every morning and never having to wonder if I have enough gas to get home has been life-changing.

I forgot how stressful it was trying to make it to daycare before it closed (or drop the kids off before work) and realizing I had \~10 miles left in my tank. I haven’t had to remember to fit in a trip to gas station in >2 years and I love it.

And very fast acceleration. And honestly has a lot of good features, one which I love is having a camera on the side mirror that shows when using your turn signal. You can use it to see around cars/things you couldn’t see around, especially when leaving a tight parallel parking space. And super handy for blind spots.

Acceleration aside, none of those features have anything to do with the engine.

Yup, I figured that I would get downvoted but I firmly believe that EVs are going to dominate very soon. North America seems to be sticking their collective heads in the sand on this one.
TetrisPlayer3223@reddit
I will start by saying i despise evs with every cell in my body so my opinion may be biased.
Generally speaking the worse driver you are and the less you are interested in cars the more inclined you will be to buy an ev. Additionaly the more financial incentives governments give the higher chance they will get bought.
The truth is evs are a new gimmick, and just like with diesels (I'm talking from a European pov) in the 2000s when they were supposed to be the savior of the world, the hype will die out and the car industry will have to come up with new gimmicks to keep their primary customers satisfied so they stand out, so different fuels, maybe modified combustion cycles.
For actual car enthusiasts evs will never do it, the incredible mass, the ugly ugly design, low quality materials and cheap design choices mixed with complete disconnect from the driving experience just doesn't work.
Emeks243@reddit
Definitely biased and that’s fine, buy whatever you want.
As for your generalizations and your assessments you are way off base IMO. “The worse driver you are the less you are interested in cars the more inclined you will be to buy an EV”.
I have a class 1 semi truck license, a motorcycle license, raced motorcycles for decades and have never had an “at fault” collision in a vehicle. All I cared about as a kid was race cars and dirt bikes.
ICE vehicles have been refined to the nth degree and are amazing technological achievements but are really obsolete at this point. It’s obvious to me that you likely haven’t ever driven an EV.
Happy motoring!
TetrisPlayer3223@reddit
I have and as mentioned, I hate being only a "suggestion" to what the car does. I hate driving assistance, I hate the touch buttons, I hate the non-circular steering wheels, I hate the big screen in the middle and nothing around, I hate the exterior design. I hate the silence and lack of events.
Tesla owners love OPD and even activating autopilot, if that isn't a characteristic of someone who doesn't care about driving, then I don't know what is. Same goes for other evs, it's the most simplified and minimized form of automotive experience, they are not build for emotion like the muscle cars or 1990s european cars, but instead as a symbol of profit margains.
You have become old, the "new old". You have been with combustion cars for your whole life and in line with the modern culture you wanted something new you don't know. Anyone who says ice is obsolete does not know how much more there is to master, and anyone who prefers evs has never cared about driving, but decades of going speed limit in a semi truck can do that to you.

CheMeGreezne@reddit

Yes, even the performance ones are boring AF because there's so much electronic interference that insulates the driver from the job of driving.
nahnathatsnotme@reddit

AppropriateDeal1034@reddit
BMW have never been the best performance cars, just people keep falling for the marketing.
Complex_Race9966@reddit
Which cara are better performance wise in same price range?
AppropriateDeal1034@reddit
With the price of BMWs, there's always been a cheaper option with equal or better performance, people just buy into the "perfect 50-50 weight distribution" and "the drivers machine" nonsense. It's like when Saab tried to play on "we make fighter jets" to sell their cars
Complex_Race9966@reddit

AppropriateDeal1034@reddit

Supra is a bigger obsession, especially for how few sold. E46 M3 is about the same weight but would easily take the supra if there were any turns. Heavy cars that go in a straight line are boring to me, also I never said the E46 was amazing looking. E30 is better looking.
Everything after e46 is crap and terrible looking. Besides maybe the 1M
Toyota just makes ugly cars. I would take a MR2 over the Supra, more fun to drive, not the best looking.
NSX, RX7, S2000 over the Supra and BMWs
equitymans@reddit
Toyota supra is arguably the most overrated motor vehicle ever made. Not even close to top 5 cars out of Japan.

Did you know that there are more crashes when NASCAR races their road courses vs. the big ovals? Sure, the crashes in the ovals are larger, but they are less frequent than the ones on road courses.
I’ve gained a TON more respect for NASCAR, as I have learned more about it. But, it is still far less exciting to watch than anything that does more than “go fast, turn left”.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
You know NASCAR was created by criminals who built cars to run from cops. You think they only did that in ovals?
VideoLeoj@reddit
Yes!!!
Back country roads, different driving surfaces, right turns as well as left turns, I wouldn’t be surprised if they caught air sometimes….
The roots of NASCAR are much more like Rally than its current form. I like and respect Rally a much more. They are the drivingest drivers in the world, as far as I can tell.
AppropriateDeal1034@reddit
To be fair to you both...
The hellcat is an awesome car and I'd have one over any BMW, any day of the week, just a shame they didn't produce a manual.
American cars, even sports cars, have had leaf spring rear suspension until pretty recently, so have definitely been...poor...at cornering shall we say.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
Is "pretty recently" the 80s?
AppropriateDeal1034@reddit
Why yes, yes it is, thank you. We don't see many American cars in not-America, so the 80's really is "pretty recently" when it comes to shaking the "hurr durr they can't go around corners" mentality, especially when even after you learnt about rear suspension, your cars being large and heavy on soft suspension meant they still handled very poorly compared to euro equivalents.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
Don't is not the same as can't. Handling vs ride comfort is a tuning choice, that many American cars choose comfort doesn't mean they can't handle.
Fun fact, a great many european cars that I'd assume you think handle well have copied their suspension from Ford. B sport did a great fid on part of it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yX-iOTWjLJM, also the revo-knuckle is a Ford creation.
A great many european cars that I'd assume you think handle well use MacPherson struts. A technology invented by Chevy, that today is quite obsolescent, yet most BMW and Porsche still use it.
The first production car with a front engine and rear transaxle was American.
I can go on.
AppropriateDeal1034@reddit
I'm aware of all that, and I'm aware than Ford starting mass production and pouring millions into R&D early on in the automotive game did indeed create some wonderful designs that are still widely used today. MacPherson worked for Ford though as far as I'm aware, not Chevy.
I did specifically say that American cars opt softer suspension, I agree it's a choice (and a decent one), especially considering BMW are known for breaking wheels due to hard suspension, low profile runflats, and poor alloy design, I'm just saying that the other guy did technically have a point that American cars aren't known for sharp handling, mostly because American roads don't require it.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
MacPherson worked for both, but yes, turns out the strut was more Ford than Chevy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacPherson_strut
That's not what you said and perception is not truth.
BTW there are manual Hellcats, the Challenger Hellcat is available manual. A Challenger Hellcat widebody, manual, is a heck of a car. That Challenger is far better handling than a BMW.
AppropriateDeal1034@reddit
American roads are mostly wide and straight. European roads are mostly not.
What I said was "your cars being large and heavy on soft suspension meant they still handled very poorly compared to euro equivalents", which is fact. I never said "you can't make suspension" or "can't make it handle well" I simply said that large heavy cars on soft suspension don't handle as well.
We were also talking about the charger hellcat which is auto only, but yeah the challenger is available in manual because it's a different car. The dodge viper is also available as a manual, but again that's a different car.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
It's really a question of handles what. Real roads aren't race tracks, they have bumps, pot holes, curbs, snow, gravel, etc. This is why I harp on the strut thing, struts don't really do camber gain. So it's impossible to build a suspension with decent travel that can also handle well when using struts. But with a good SLA suspension camber gain can be tuned with body roll to create a good compromise between handling and suspension travel, like it does is the Charger/Challenger.
Weight matters as a ratio, few will argue power to weight ratio, but even fewer realize there's also tire to weight ratio. This is the Achilles heel of many BMW, tiny tires for the weight. While a widebody Charger/Challenger fits some massive meats.
AppropriateDeal1034@reddit
275 and 285 width is "tiny"?
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
Tires are three dimensional.
homer_the_great1@reddit
Hard disagree. I’ve had over 50 cars and bmw. Problematic as they were were the most thrilling.
CheMeGreezne@reddit
That's with all newer cars. At least bmw allows you to turn everything off I believe.
AppropriateDeal1034@reddit
Some of it, but then it's still boring until it tries to throw you in a ditch because there's no warning or feel because it still insulates the driver from all feel other than every tiny little bump in the road that tries to break your spine. And your wheels
As you can tell, big BMW fan.
CheMeGreezne@reddit
What cars do you like?
AppropriateDeal1034@reddit
Manual, handles well, comfortable, as few driver aids as possible for maximum road feel, anything from 100-300bhp depending on size / weight.
An old 1.6 manual corolla is more fun than an auto BMW M5 where you just floor it for half a second and then run out of road, all while having no feel or audio queues for what the tyres are actually doing.
Pushing a car to its limits without being at kill-people speeds is fun, anything else needs a track. And I don't live at a track.
Lotus Elise, mx5, that sort of thing is fun imo
CheMeGreezne@reddit
Lots of (older) bmws fit that description
AppropriateDeal1034@reddit
Some older BMW's fit the description, but they've always been cunt cars for people with a cheap suit and a mobile phone glued to their ear. In the 80's when 911's were killing all the stock market bros, the ones who survived were the equally obnoxious, but slightly less successful ones in BMWs
CheMeGreezne@reddit
That's some stereotypical prejudice thinking there
AppropriateDeal1034@reddit
Just like the "BMWs don't have indicators", and in fact every single other stereotype out there, it's not plucked from someone's arse, it's there because of observations of those being exactly the sort of people who drive 90+% or BMWs.
But again, it's mostly the fact that BMW people claim they're awesome and the best and whatever because they're brand whores, the automotive equivalent of apple buyers.

Rough_Cancel7265@reddit

AppropriateDeal1034@reddit
Ah, okay. Sounds like you've either had bad cars, or you just don't enjoy driving that much and want the car to take as much if it away from you as possible. Not saying that's anything bad, just that it's not my idea of driving.
Rough_Cancel7265@reddit
Nope, just didn't find having manuals fun at all. It never added anything to the experience. Once I got used to shifting each specific car after a week or so it just became a thing to do and more often than not became annoying
AppropriateDeal1034@reddit
So yeah, you don't like driving, you just like going A to B with minimal effort. Again, that's fine, it's what most people do and what Americans have almost all done since the 60's, it's just not my cup of tea.
ChargingAndroid@reddit
how are you gonna tell someone they don't like driving when they're telling you they do. I drove manual since I had a license and swore by never buying an auto, just recently got one because I didn't want to pass up the car I wanted with all the options, configuration etc and it's literally 90%+ of the experience (FOR ME). manuals are fun and engaging but when I'm on a windy road in a car with great handling, engine and exhaust singing, I'm not enjoying it any less because instead of using my left foot and shifter to change gears, I'm using paddles.
Rough_Cancel7265@reddit
I like driving just fine, I just don't need to play with a metal ball on a stick to have fun 🤷
Sweet_Word_3808@reddit
An EV doesn't "take gear shifting away from you" because there aren't multiple gears to shift.
I know what you mean, and if you enjoy manual shifting and think driving is boring without that I'm not trying to contradict your experience.
But it's not the right framing to think an EV is taking something away, because they never had it in the first place. It's also not right to equate "driving" with manual gear shifting since EVs have been around in one form or another since the 1890s. Two different propulsion technologies with different characteristics. Neither is the One True Way to drive.
SummertimeThrowaway2@reddit
That’s your personal preference though. A lot of us like the sound and vibrations of an engine
Esoteric-Bibliotheca@reddit
I recognize that I am an outlier here, I prefer the actual act of driving way more, slamming the gears and hearing the noise makes up about 20% of the fun for me. Feeling the tires grip the road through a high soeed turn, and running my little touge route are much more important to me.
I can definitely live without the noise and having to worry about the gears if I had to.

FrozenUruguayBallbac@reddit

ly5ergic@reddit
EVs are not fun at all. The punch of instant torque and acceleration is fun first couple times, thats about it, everything else about them is terrible. Heavy, no feedback from the steering, no shifting, all the electronics and sensors, its all blah. It eliminates every single thing that makes a car fun to drive.
Rough_Cancel7265@reddit
You're right, I've been bored to death having 570hp on tap whenever for the last year and a half. I don't know how I've managed to not fall asleep at the wheel.
ly5ergic@reddit
I dont care if its 1000hp. Big stats dont make a fun car. A light 120 hp - 200 hp car with actual road feel is 1000x more fun then a big heavy thing with an accelerator switch. A 20-30 year old light economy car with manual or hydraulic steering is more fun.
1 trick pony, fast acceleration at the start. Even the feeling of a car or motorcycle pulling harder as you get to higher rpms feels is way more fun than the invisble hand shoving your car really hard at first and then getting weaker.
New ICE cars are almost just as bad, they engineered out everything that makes a car fun to drive. All the drive by wire makes eveything feel numb and gone.
Rough_Cancel7265@reddit

Similar_Task_2132@reddit
I think most people can agree stick shift is more fun and has a more “real” driving experience. But for people who drive often to work, an automatic is often a good choice. Especially considering a lot of manuals are more expensive. Stick shift or nothing is kind of a crazy statement.
Falloutvictim@reddit
I have owned and enjoy manuals, and will again someday own a second "weekend car" in manual, but for daily driving I really enjoy using the paddle shifters on manual mode in my CT5-V. It scratches the itch enough to be fair compromise between ease of commuting in traffic and still being able to control my shifts when feeling frisky. Not all automatic cars with manual mode are equal though, mine won't force upshifts, it'll let me hit the rev limiter if I want.

I assume they have smart engineers working there. I notice the same quality problem with LG appliances. It seems South Korea is the opposite of Japan.

Half agree, except the engines they put in the Souls and Fortes 15 years ago are actually solid. As long as it isn't a Theta 2

Maybe thats a uniquely USA problem, because we still have Kia and Hyuandais from 1998 running around here in Southern Africa. They're pretty reliable and easy to maintain.

Yes. Korean cars have a good reputation in 🇦🇺 because they’re actually made in Korea. Yes like all ageing cars you have to top up oil occasionally. That’s why they have dipsticks.

Ironically, the older ones are the ones to get. Accents and Elantras from before the days of direct injection are reliable little cars. They're just shitty lol.
I'm with you though. The internet loves to glaze the Korean cars these days, but I've been working in the auto industry long enough to know that it's a lipstick on a pig situation. They're still junk just like they were 10-15 years ago

Old economy cars are just as interesting as muscle cars, sports cars and exotics. If not more so.
Driving a slow car fast is more fun than driving a fast car slow.
Sometimes we see cars with weird and shoddy repairs that make people point fingers, laugh and make fun of both the car and the owner. But those repairs may be just what saved the car from the crusher. The car is still here, and an unfortunate repair can be fixed later. Once they are crushed they are gone forever.
3dprintedthingies@reddit
Nah. This is a reddit opinion that is just wrong.
A fwd civic can have as much lipstick as it wants, but it's still a pig at the end of the day.

Agreed my 03 Corolla and 85 f150 were the most fun I ever had I just got my first new car today and it’s really fun but it’s going to take a while to get used to it. Al my other cars I could feel everything in the road and didn’t care when I found the limit of the grip and slid off the road. Bought both my older cars for less than a 1000 and put well over 400k between the 2 of them

I've seen a Ford Festiva try a time trial. It went on two wheels in a lot of the corners. While I'm not impressed with the car, I was very impressed with the driver's skill level that he managed the speed he did, with that car, and a perfect run with no hiccups.
After that, some other kid ran the corvette he borrowed into the fence. I dont think he got the memo that a wrecked vet gets you no respect.
VW-MB-AMC@reddit
People who are able to drive like that is always very impressive and entertaining. One of the local classic VW clubs used to have a track day at a tight and twisting go kart track where we could run time trials with our old Beetles. On one such event a guy in a 100% stock 1962 with a 34hp 1200 engine managed to outrun a modified 1972 1302/Super Beetle with much more horsepower. I have two similar Beetles myself (a stock 1963 and a 1971 1302/super with modified suspension and a stock engine) and have tried driving around the same track. It is very impressive how he managed to get the 1962 that around the track as fast as he did.
I also remember that there was a woman in a factory stock 1300 from 1968/1969 that got some very impressive lap times.

oh yeah there's way more that goes into those economy cars than people think. Like sure there's some really cool design that goes into cool cars, but they kinda fall into that "any half decent engineer can design the best X, but it takes a great engineer to make a good X within budget" kinda deal. Like a lot of what makes the cooler cars cooler is accomplished by throwing more money on the project and increasing MSRP. But to make a car with idiot proofing, daily reliability, performance to match the market, etc... and keep it's price competitive takes a ridiculous amount of work.
An old shitbox on the road is testament that despite cost reductions and designs to make DIY maintenance more difficult the engineering behind it still allowed it to last that long if the owner has the will. There's countless stories behind that car about where it's been, what it's seen, how it broke and how it was fixed. It's been taken care of, maybe not obsessively to keep it looking pristine but enough to keep it rolling day in and day out.
VW-MB-AMC@reddit
I agree on all of this. The way they are constructed for ease of use, and in older cars also DIY friendliness is often quite genius. My main car looks like it has been to hell and back several times, and we have gotten a lot of derogatory comments on it over the years. But it is still here and doing it's job.

VW-MB-AMC@reddit
A lot of this is about personal preference. I have tried driving fast cars on normal roads, and to me It just isn't the same. It is fast and all that, but we don't get to use it to its fullest. Driving my old Beetle with 34hp flat out is a completely different story. We can use the entire range of the engine, go flat out on the highway and go as fast as physically possible. And still not get a ticket. It's limitations is part of what makes it so fun.
K_Linkmaster@reddit
I will maintain any car is fun fast. Have a great day!
VW-MB-AMC@reddit
For a lot of people that is probably true. I personally don't have the nerves to drive very fast. I enjoy driving slow. I like to cruise on the scenic, empty backroads with the windows down while I play music. Sometimes it is fun to go flat out, and then I prefer to do it in something modest.

Not sure how old you are, but cash for clunkers was the most devastating thing to ever happen in the car business unless you owned the crusher.
VW-MB-AMC@reddit
I an currently 38. I live in Norway and we had a similar program during the summer of 1996, where the government briefly quadrupled the wreckage refund to get old and dilapidated cars off the road. What happened then was that a lot of old cars that were perfectly useable got scrapped. Many of which would sell for big money today. Car enthusiasts were waiting outside of the junkyards to flag down people who came in and buy the cars before they went into the press. Until then it was common to see all kinds of old Volkswagens, Volvo Amazons and PVs, Ford Taunuses and many other older models in every day traffic. But in just a few months the majority disappeared. Thankfully more and more old cars are deemed worthy of collecting.
TheWhogg@reddit

Burnouts, sideshows and spinning tires are pathetic. Sorry display shouting, "I have no REAL skills, but look at me!"
other_view12@reddit
The better tires belong on the front of my front wheel drive car.
There is more weight on the front, it does more braking and all of the steering. The wheels in back mostly roll.
Yet I'm told the worn tires should be in the front. I have yet to understand this "logic"
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
Loss of front traction can be fixed, you have more control over it. Loss of rear traction is much more likely to result in a crash.
other_view12@reddit
While that is true, it's really hard to lose traction on the rear of a front wheel drive car. Needing to stop in the wet is common, and the lack of traction there seems like a much bigger risk.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
It isn't, most of all in the wet. The rear gets light under braking and will hydroplane.
other_view12@reddit
"Your reward for helping you?"
Are you serious? You chose to respond. I didn't call you stupid, I explained the flaw in your logic. You are free to show me where I'm wrong. But getting your panties all wadded up because I disagree is pretty poor form.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
I understand the physics, and it doesn't sound like you do.
other_view12@reddit
Whatever, my 40 years of driving a front wheel car while doing it this way has never had my rear end slide out.
I understand the physics, and it doesn't sound like you do. You'd have to brake hard to lighten the rear enough to hydroplane, then you have to turn, while doing so.
If you take the same situation you described with worn front tires, your braking distance, increased and you couldn't change directions. So your hypothetical just fell apart because you just couldn't stop in time with your worn front tires.

bigfooman@reddit
Absolutely. I get Boomer rage seeing every car company making empty generic interiors with an iPad glued to the dashboard and calling is an interior. It's almost never improves the practical functions for day to day driving and it's especially annoying when it's done to enthusiast cars that should give you a sense of occasion when driving.. My conspiracy theory is that it's just for planned obsolescence when those screen and software look and feel janky compared to model just a few years later.
wwzxc@reddit
I don't even think it's a conspiracy theory anymore, it's just facts. It's cheaper to stuff everything within the tablet instead of making buttons for different functions, but it's being sold as innovation of some sorts. What always gets me is that we are not allowed to use phone behind the wheel, but trying to adjust the damn temp of the car within that damn screen while not having your eyes on the road at all is perfectly safe and fine and government approved. And if for whatever reason your screens blackout or glitch, you effectively have a useless piece of expensive junk.

Superhereaux@reddit
You’re partially correct.
A vehicle equipped with OEM LED headlights, from the factory, with headlight housings specifically designed around the LED bulbs, does not blind oncoming drivers.
The dipshit installing aftermarket LED headlight bulbs in their 2009 Chevy Silverado with housings designed for regular halogen bulbs IS blinding oncoming drivers.

It's absolutely catering to the worst drivers, AND all the sensors have boosted insurance costs for everyone.
I recently read about Toyota's TSS 4.0 "proactive driving assist" which sounds absolutely like a feature designed to make it easier to space out on your phone.
I believe the safety systems, when they eventually start glitching out from years in the heat and cold, will be hard or impossible to find because they will have long been out of production. This will total a lot of otherwise perfectly fine cars that can't pass state inspection.
xenesaltones@reddit
Yeah, i got 2019 car and thankfully does not have many safety features, no Lane assist, no tiredness warning, no sign recognition... What it does have is radar emergency braking, it was awful and a couple of times even dangerous, so when it stopped working due miss alignment I was happy to leave that way, I have seen fixes for about £800. I think I'll keep the radar warning light on in my dash forever.
Imagine paying that kind of money for a feature that makes the car less safe
Possum_Jenkinzz@reddit
Unless they make an exception. Here in Virginia I had to/was able to get an exemption letter from state police for my 1995 Accord for the SRS system. The carbon footprint from a single transatlantic flight is probably a lot more than I'll ever generate in my lifetime of driving so I'll be getting a Ford Ranger if I want one without feeling bad
xenesaltones@reddit
It is a way for big companies to shift the blame on us. I recently saw how much one of those mining diesel excavators use per day or how much a cruise ship pollute and very quickly realised that the general public cars are a tiny fraction of the pollution issue.
I absolutely agree that we need to reduce emissions , but draconian laws on regular people cars while commercial vehicles and machinery get essentially 0 regulation is just ludicrous. Let's regulate the biggest offenders , and when that is sorted we can talk about petrol cars.
We need better and more numerous train infrastructure, I think it would be a good start to replace some of those millions of articulated trucks for trains
Cautious_Clothes_285@reddit
I don't think you should feel bad, get what you want. But I do hate the sentiment I'm seeing more and more often where "[thing] is a bigger problem than I'll ever be so I don't need to even bother trying" when it comes to environmental sustainability and stuff.
Like yeah it'll take forever for you to match the footprint of that transatlantic flight (which if commercial is shared between hundreds of people) but that wouldn't be an excuse to roll coal in a diesel from stoplight to stoplight or something.
I noticed some roofing company dumped an entire load of shingles/nails/trash on a local ATV trail recently; doesn't mean I should toss my empty soda can into the trees because it'll take me a lifetime of tossing cans to produce the same amount of pollution that they did in one night.
I get that corporations are producing the vast majority of pollution we deal with but I think there's still a balance where as individuals we should be doing the best we reasonably can without really hurting ourselves either.
I realize that a Ranger is not really an issue here so don't take that the wrong way. Like I said, more just an annoyance I've got with people in general leaning more into the "X is way worse than I could ever be so it doesn't matter if I pollute" thinking that I keep seeing.

tdebacker22@reddit
Oil testing proves you can go further on modern oils in modern engines. I used to do 7-9k on my '17 Suburban because the oil was fine every time I tested it. The last oil test for my '13 F350 said to keep running it after 8k miles.
Sad-Ad1780@reddit
Yes, that a perfect example of "opinion that instantly tells you someone has no idea what they’re talking about".

I did send my (full synthetic) oil to test at 6000 miles, and the results were not encouraging, to say the least. But I'm sure you know better.
Millennial_Falcon_85@reddit
This right here. There’s so much data that says to change the oil sooner than people are doing it. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Sad-Ad1780@reddit

Tinchotesk@reddit
You think the lab lied to me? What for?
Sad-Ad1780@reddit
No, I think there were factors other than the oil at play.
Millennial_Falcon_85@reddit
I very much know what I’m talking about but you do you.
Sad-Ad1780@reddit
No, you're just spouting outdated information. It's not 1975. Synthetic oil and filter are easily good for 10K mile changes. At 220K miles and 12-15K oil changes and my 20 year old engine is in fantastic shape. Recently had the valve cover off for a routine valve adjustment and there's zero varnish or sludge.
ly5ergic@reddit
Think it probably depends on the engine but when I was doing 10-12k oil changes i started getting some sludge buildup.
Sad-Ad1780@reddit
What oil and filter? Quality full synthetic like Mobil 1 or Valvoline?
ly5ergic@reddit
Full synthetic always Mobil 1, Quaker, Valvoline or Pennzoil. Fram ultra synthetic filters or occasionally oem.
On both Tacoma and CRV i started getting thin film of sludge on everything i could see under the valve cover through the oil fill cap hole. Switched to 5-7k from 10-12k and it slowly went away.
Sad-Ad1780@reddit
I can't argue with direct experience. If you hadn't been running synthetic since new, I do have suspicions about the issue, though.
ly5ergic@reddit
I've never bought a new car. They were maybe around 70k when i bought them, both clean inside. Both are getting close to 300k miles now. Started with 5k to 6k changes, then switched to 10-12k and started getting a thin film in both. It was mild not some severe sludge. Neither has had anything but synthetic since I've owned them. No one has changed the oil besides me.
It probably would have been harmless but I would rather it not be there. It only costs me an extra $300 every 100,000 miles, feels worth it to me.
Millennial_Falcon_85@reddit
You’re subscribing to fake news. No one should be going this long between oil changes on any vehicle. Anyone that actually knows and works on cars will tell you this. Stop listening to the dealers and manufacturers they don’t have your best interest at heart. Their target market doesn’t keep vehicles past 100k miles and therefor never deals with the issues from poor maintenance. I strongly encourage you to do your research and talk to real mechanics.
Sad-Ad1780@reddit
I guess you missed the part where my OCI is over 10K and the engine is doing fantastic at 220K miles. Don't let facts get in the way of your unsubstantiated opinions, though.
Millennial_Falcon_85@reddit
And I guess you missed the part where I clarified you have a port injected engine. They don’t make tanks like that anymore. You’ll learn when you get a new vehicle.
Sad-Ad1780@reddit
I'll stick to 10K+ OCI (after multiple oil changes during break in from 0-10K) with synthetic oil/filter and be just fine when I get a new vehicle. Yes, port injection helps but it's not the reason a 10K OCI works. Synthetic is another world compared to conventional.
Millennial_Falcon_85@reddit
You just mentioned break in. Thats obviously very key. Also all manufacturers recommend synthetic oil now for all these various reasons
Millennial_Falcon_85@reddit
Also zero varnish or sludge because your 20 year old engine is port injection not direct injection. Look into the difference and be sure to use top tier gasoline.

Crossovers are also the worst of all worlds, and wagons beat them in every way besides off roading which crossover owners rarely if ever do.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
Safety is a function.
HedonisticFrog@reddit
Vehicles being taller doesn't make them safer. Large luxury sedans are far safer than any crossover. Longer crumple zones and better designs matter far more. It's also extremely selfish to drive massive battering rams that decimate other vehicles just to protect yourself more.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
Being more massive does. I agree for a given mass that a sedan is safer than a crossover. But in a collision a 3 ton SUV is safer than a 2 ton sedan.
There's an argument to be made that a sedan will have a better chance at avoiding the collision. And personally a large sedan is my choice, but still, physics is physics.

Better efficiency for most drivers who drive it properly, better control of the vehicle in slippery/adverse conditions, more fun to drive, more durable, better repairability, requires more driver attention (less distracted driving) better performance.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
None of those are totally true.
Better control comes from freeing up a foot and hand for more important things.
Entirely subjective.
Not true at all in the majority of applications.

If a car has a good DCT with a good manual mode, idc about manuals leaving cars. Even certain slush boxes have great manual modes, like the ZF8Hp for example. I still enjoy a manual, but I like the design of the wet clutches in a DCT more than dry clutches in a regular manual.
I also like EVs more than my fellow car enthusiasts. I’m not crazy about them and like ICE cars better, but there’s no denying EVs are just simpler. Not technologically—they’re insane in that way—but mechanically. It’s just. Chassis, battery, subframes electric motors. ICE cars have the engine, transmission and a bunch of other parts moving in synchronicity. If they don’t, the whole thing can blow.

After the height of the seats, you block rearward vision (not a big deal with cameras I guess) and have safety issues unless you use straps.
What are you guys using the extra height of a station wagon trunk for?
I bet they can be useful if you’re buying something like tall potted plants or have a family going on an international trip with a lot of bags so you can stand them upright- But how often is that? I just uber to the airport anyway. Way cheaper than parking, especially for any long trip I’d have to check bags for.

My personal opinion about me being a car enthusiast.
Petrol - My car shall always have a petrol engine. That smell alone may be 40-50% enjoyment of driving a car. (IF I could afford daily driving on racing fuel, I would) I miss the smell of leaded petrol.
Diesels is for tractors and trucks. Enough said.
EVs.. In my mind, I can't have any driving pleasure with just a humm over the vibration and the smell of petrol. I had one as a rental while mine was in the shop. It was like driving a car sim on the PC.
And in my mind, people driving only EV, don't care about driving a car. They use it as a tool from A to B. And I respect them for that.
Superhereaux@reddit
If you’re smelling fuel (or petrol as y’all call it) while you’re driving, there’s something wrong with your car.
EttanSnuser@reddit
Hehehe. Yeah I agree. Of course I don't mean smelling the petrol of my own car while driving it. That would be too much. And something would be leaking.
But driving behind someone. Especially if I'm lucky, and is right behind an American classic V8. Oooh that smell. And sometimes they even have leaded petrol. (We can buy lead additives at all gas stations for older cars)

Frustrated_Zucchini@reddit
People who hate on EVs aren't real car guys, they're just knobheads who think being louder than someone else means being better than them.
Caveat, real car guys can appreciate the facts that a) EVs are still relatively on their infancy and the whole range anxiety topic will go away in the same way as it did with ICE vehicles once fuel stations became commonplace, b) there is only a finite amount of oil in the ground, so why not encourage joe-public to use electricity for their mundane commuter cars instead of using the oil that can be saved and used for those of us who enjoy classic & special ICE cars, c) EVs are actually faster, and "skateboard" platforms actually afford more in the way of vehicle dynamics, thanks to the lowered C.O.M, than an ICE car - the same goes with unsprung mass. OEMs have resisted it, but I've been arguing with them for years in meetings, that they should switch to smaller disc brakes, because of the capability of regenerative braking (which is always improving).
TheRimmerodJobs@reddit
I do agree range anxiety is a big issue for a lot of people and more charging stations will come in time but it also has to do with charge time, which I do think will also get better. Plus if you live anywhere where there are temperature extremes they are not the best. Once some of this is figured out I do think more people would get on board.
Frustrated_Zucchini@reddit
Even today, the charging time isn't a big issue for most.
Not sure where you are, but in Germany where I live, the average person does something like 25-30km/day... so only really needs to charge once per week at most.
In the UK where I'm originally from, the average is even lower if I remember rightly.
Even on long journeys, normal people will take a break every 2-3h naturally anyway to either get a drink or empty themselves of the drink they had at their last stop, and it's pretty typical to take 10-15 minutes to do that. If you change it for 20 minutes, which is similar to a normal stop time... you get about 33kWh from a common-ist 100kW DC charger, which if you use the average of 5-7km per kW you can do conservatively 120-150km on that 20 mins, which is an hour of driving assuming you can do the speed limit 100% of the time.
With a car that has a 500km (320 miles) stated range can realistically manage 900km (560 miles) with only 20 minute stops every couple of hours.
If you change those stops to 40 minutes, then you're increasing that almost exponentially, because a 56kW battery can do 500km on a full charge, and there are bigger batteries than that available these days.
Even when I drive to the UK to visit family I could drive all the way to Calais, charge for the hour waiting time, then make my way to almost anywhere in England/South Wales without needing to stop more than the normal wait for the ferry. If anything, I would have to stop less than with my ICE which I usually have to fill somewhere in England.
Mike312@reddit
We had an i3 with the middle battery and we could go a week and a half or so between charges. I almost dropped the money for an L2 charger, but we had REX and it was fine just going off 120v wall sockets.
Frustrated_Zucchini@reddit
That's awesome to hear. BMW were so ahead of the time when they came out with the i3 and i8.
Arguably too far ahead, which is why they didn't properly catch on & sell like they deserved to.

I can't deny Tesla...had a superior product at the time. Sucks to drop your 80mi EV only to be dunked on by something that costs 30% less with 3x the range.
I'll still take another i3 over a lot of other EVs though. Great city car, and one of the few ~3,000lb EVs on the market. I've driven a lot of other EVs and hybrids (i8, i4 M50, Tesla, Porsche Taycan sedan and wagon) and the i3 was by far the most fun.

No Subaru in my career was ever a solidly reliable car. 76-82 was axles but great engine, 83-97ish was axles and head gaskets. Now the entire front of the engine falls apart about when timing belts are due... if your head gaskets haven't blown yet.

Got some.
First large trucks and SUVs are overhated. Yes most people who own them don't use them, yes they would be better off with a Minivan etc. But as what they are built to be they are brilliant at that. Also Full Size BOFs SUVs are the best car if you need a minivan but actually tow and go offroad often.
The best garage is a sports car for weekends, truck for utility and offroading and nice sedan for daily driving.
EVs can be just as fun as an ICE car and people who hate them make no sense.
Nowadays both Paddles and Manuals are brilliant but the only cars where manual are truly superior are sub 300 horsepower hatchbacks and sports cars, like the miata is probably nowhere near as fun with the auto as with the manual and most hot hatches are better with the manual and most shitbox FWD ecoboxs from the 2000s with 120 horsepower are better with a manual. 300-600 Horsepower both manual and DCT are brilliant but 700+ horsepower DCT is just better.
A lot of modern BOF vehicles are actually fun to drive.

I have a few. The existence of minivans makes most 3rd row unibody SUVs redundant to anyone except those self conscious enough that can't be seen in one. EVs have their place, can be cool, but it's all the politics that made people hate them so much. If politics never touched them and they were just another car on the lot to buy, more people would probably like them. And my last is that Nissan CVTs are much better in the modern era. You watch that Altima that's been totalled 3 times, had 27 different owners from the same buy here pay here, barrel down the interstate at 90 every day, and you try to tell me it's unreliable.
Users5252@reddit
I think that EVs and hybrids can be good driving enthusiast cars, it's just that very few are attempting to pave the road for the electric sports car industry to develop.
All we have are electric and hybrid super and hyper cars the average man will never dream of affording, and some of them aren't even pure sports cars, more of grand tourers.
The only attempt at it I could think of is the SC01, but the average buyer in the west can't walk into a dealership and buy one.
I also think that a gas turbine would be great for a hybrid sports car, much lighter and sounds cooler.

Even GM gets way too much hate, I drive a Chevy Traverse (if you can believe it) for work every single day for hours as a fleet vehicle and even as a fleet spec it is incredibly comfortable, quiet for it's class, drives better and nimbler than a Highlander, and takes all the abuse of the forest roads and pot holes on city street without much fuss and has only had one sensor issue and needed a front CV axel in 140,326 miles and only a single rattle source which comes from the speaker area which is to be expected given the abuse it takes daily.
They have good and bad engines and models like every manufacturer. The least reliable in my experience has been German cars but even my experience with them isn't what I'd call horrific and I wouldn't shy away from them either, but they definitely have some questionable build quality especially in the VW's and Audi's, BMW is oddly the best in my experience and the easiest to work on.

Depends, on tons of things, like location, weather, time, is it a job or hobby, etc.
Not necessarily, some people own multiple cars, some own cars that they only drive during their preferred hobby, be it drag racing, Rally, Autocross, etc. These cars will spend their entire life doing exactly what the driver thinks IS FUN.
Great, go buy a Camry or Odyssey, then if that's what you like, no one said you couldn't.
My point was that those things are SOME people's fun. So to remove it from vehicles is kinda silly especially the vehicles that are being advertised to do those specific things. Which isn't a Camry or Odyssey.

I have a buddy who had a civic (2012 or 2014 not sure) that he used as a trade in for a 2026 honda passport trailsport elite, brand new 5 miles on the dash, he's put about 2k miles on it and already has issues, not mechanically just sensors and aids and assists. Which might not be a big issue but considering its new fresh off the lot and already has these issues is insane to me, they're just so fragile compared to older cars, which is why ive contemplated buying a new car, I currently have a 2003 Toyota camry with a 2.4l I4 I've got 290517 miles on the dash and havent had any issues with it, obviously regular maintenance has been done, I do all oil changes myself, I did my alternator myself about a year ago, im going to do some bushings soon. To protect your engine and catalytic converter (money) and the environment, you should wait 1-2 minutes after starting your cold engine (ideally until coolant temperature reaches at least 50 degrees Celsius) before starting to drive. It is not a coincidence that this is the temperature at which the temperature gauge starts moving (or the cold engine light goes off). This is the temperature at which additional enrichment is no longer needed and the catalyst is close to the operating temperature and can handle the unburned fuel.

SUVs suck.
I prefer hatchbacks and wagons. The driving characteristics are usually as bad as a frame on body truck, too much body roll even on "sporty models".
I'm tall, and I prefer sedans and coupes because having my legs stretched out a bit makes my knees and heels hurt less, and if I position similarly in an SUV it's a 3 seater realistically. Even in my Q7.
My other hot take even as a die hard gear head that's built, modified, raced cars... EVs are cool as fuck and I have no doubts upgraded motors, or over volting or something similar will become a thing in the same sense that tunes are a thing now. I'll always miss a rumble, spool, and flutter of a turbo, but that instant torque and smoothness is insane.

German manufacturers do not get a pass for building shitty cars just because they classify repairs as maintenance. Warning the customer in advance that the parts you manufactured have a very limited lifespan, compared to other manufacturers, does not change the fact that they're poorly designed or built.
BathroomEvery2474@reddit
There's a lot of cognitive dissonance in the owner communities for Volkswagen/Audi. The EA113 engines ate HPFP cam followers, with catastrophic results if you don't change it every 20-50k miles, and owners just treated it like it was a maintenance item. Then I learned VW is still making EA888 engines with plastic water pumps that cost $1000 to replace. Nuts to that.

I have had Hondas for the last 30 years and they have been HUGELY PRACTICAL. But at age 77, it was time to bust out, carpe diem, go for all the fun and gusto my long hard work finally allowed me to do.
AppropriateDeal1034@reddit
It's an AWFUL car. They're huge outside, but small inside. There is only one good engine and that got ruined by DPF and adblue, zero SUVs are "fun" to drive, overpriced, not really comfortable, terrible ride, no more tech than any competitor... Did you try literally any of the competition before buying your X5?
Dealers use the fresh-out-of-college techs for basic servicing, I would literally rather have any actual mechanic working on my car then most main dealers.
TanzaniteII@reddit
“Main dealers” - are you in UK? Let’s agree to disagree then, mate.
iHaveLotsofCats94@reddit
I can tell they haven't driven many SUVs by their opinion that all SUVs suck to drive. There are plenty of SUVs out there with good dynamics. For example, I think the Explorer ST drives better than plenty of traditional sporty cars. Enjoy your BMW, man. X5s are great

Because of the popularity of suv’s and pickups, we will see a large growth in aftermarket mod support and see these more at events. I think one day someone might get a rav4 to mod the same way people get a civic to mod for street racing/performance

Hydrogen is not a fuel source, it's a battery.
Hydrogen directly competes against lithium-ion, iron-phosphate, and other battery types, in storing energy that was generated somewhere else. And quite frankly, hydrogen is inferior to all those battery types in every aspect, except for highly-specific use cases.

Oil changes don't have to be done as often as they say and idling a lot doesn't shorten the life of a car
TetrisPlayer3223@reddit
Don't listen to this bozo, oil changes HAVE TO be done way earlier than the manufacturer specifies if you actually want to keep your car running. Depending on the oil it starts losing lubricating properties between 5-8k miles, at 10k miles it deteriorates even faster. Especially important if you have a turbo vehicle or if your oil regulated pressure systems in the engine to keep that lubrication at top notch.
Or you can always not change the oil at all, brick the car at 60k miles and cry that the manufacturer sucks.
hamza1234567891011@reddit
It's also worth mentioning it's very car dependent. Some cars and engines are notorious for big issues like blowing turbos up if you don't do an oil change very often. Other cars can run on oil that's had 40k miles on it and will still be ok.
Also it's a bit risky to say to people that you don't need to do oil changes as regular as the manufacturer specifies while manufacturers have started to really push the oil change intervals as a way to cut costs. Some BMWs have 18k mile intervals now! I definitely wouldn't advise someone who's just spent 100k on an M3 that he doesn't need to oil changes that frequently... I'd probably tell him to do them more.
gstringstrangler@reddit
Excessive idling is bad for engines with direct injection
Carddan92@reddit
I usually hear the opposite. Can you explain more
AppropriateDeal1034@reddit
You spend too much time listening to Americans on Reddit.
Idling doesn't do the car huge favours so you need shorter oil change intervals, but for the most part, 10k mile oil changes are absolutely enough.

Hot take: [when I see someone in a vehicle that costs hundreds of thousands of dollars drive by a homeless person, when I go to a car show and see rows of multiple six-figure cars when people in the grocery store across the street can't afford the basic items in the store needed to feed their families] Why are we spending so much on cars and so little on helping each other?
codek223@reddit
Not fair to judge based solely on what you see. Perhaps the owners of those six-figure cars were once in a position in their life where they couldn’t afford such basic items. Perhaps the owners of those cars do help out on the side; they just don’t show it publicly.
reidft@reddit
Just because someone has a custom built car on youtube doesn't mean every one of those cars is fast. I'm looking at you Honda fanboys. Your 8 second 0-60 shitbox isn't fast.
And loud exhausts are annoying. Any time I've had a loud car I've wanted to stick pencils in my ears to make myself deaf. I don't know how people can drive longer than 5 minutes with the constant drone of the engine. I picked up a truck a few months ago with an exhaust system and the first thing that gets done after maintenance is that damn system getting replaced with a factory setup.
SirNeeky@reddit
I have a legit racecar and loudness is just part of the point. However I agree in road cars. Loud exhausts can be annoying as fuck especially when they are paired with shItty sound to begin with. It pretty much gives car haters more reason to hate cars too. I would love to have a fun little sports car for public roads with a nice sounding exhaust. It just doesnt need to be a loud exhaust.
Undottedly@reddit
Slower, louder, lighter, manual, engaging sports cars are the future of sports cars. EVs have democratized speed and modern sports cars make effortless speed so accessible it loses its appeal and is outright dangerous in many cases.

The hill I will die on is that autonomous driving is being developed to take away private car ownership. Between developing automated taxis/trucks and defunding public transportation, the goal is clearly expand the power of the digital plantation to strip us of mobility. Unless of course we subscribe to have a Waymo pick us up. Which is no cheaper than a piloted taxi- but has the advantage of not giving a job to a guy who gets a cut.
When autonomous driving is viable, the moral panic claiming humans are undeserving of driving and should never have been allowed to drive at all. That the abysmal dangers of roadways (in the US) are a feature to discourage walking and riding rather a bug is conveniently ignored.
Look at Teslas valuation. Obviously, just selling 20 million cars wouldn’t equate to that cap. But making 20 million cars AND having everyone be forced to subscribe. Now you are talking. The wealthy will still be able to drive- in a geofenced surveillance van that bombards them with eCommerce prompts as they ride.
The hill I will die on is that the internet is a dead internet and there is a ton of rage bait and intentional astroturf bot campaigns flooding every forum with intentional narratives attacking rival companies and defending their own product.
And there are a bunch of goofs who may not have ever owned a car at all talking shit.
The opinion I will defend until disproven- which will be at least a decade down road- is cars are still getting more reliable as a whole. In US, average car lasts 17 years and average car on road is 12. Until it plays out, which it hasn’t and won’t for a while, it sounds like the people claiming automatics always failed around 100k miles, fuel injectors were designed to break and a scam, a little economy car engine with an aluminum block was designed to break at 100k miles etc.
Know it all, wannabe mechanics have always said shit like this. Now we have rage bait. What do you do when the power windows stop working? That sort of shit. Tell me more about CVTs and BMWs!
The numbers bare this out. When I was young conventional wisdom was that automatics were only safe to 100k miles and then had to always fail by dint of their design, sounds a lot like the CVT stuff now. Every single car company on earth has made a glass slush box that sucked at some point in last 30 years.
know someone had never owned an old car cradle to grave whilst depending on it to survive if the word “bullet proof” is thrown around. The sturdy engine block of an old Cherokee is cold comfort when you can’t get your kids to school and you to work.
People who claim the panther Crown Vic is some sort of indestructible superior vehicle- because fleets could dump in fixes to keep them on road I do not take seriously. We were a family of meticulously maintained Ford LTDs- and starting with the boats of the malaise era, they were no longer being traded in every 2 years. We even had one of those Granada PoSs and my mom had a Crown Vic. My uncle was obsessed.
That’s a decent 130k mile car, after that it becomes a money pit. This is why other than some granny Marquis from aughts I saw 4 years ago in Wisconsin, they have been raptured from road. Also, the Caprice was comprehensively superior in every way. The LTD wasn’t disaster- outside of the obvious safety and fire scandals- but as someone who rode in every gen and knew very fastidious family members who owned them for years at a time- the weird “LTD lasts forever” stuff would be for most people like some guys boasting about the McDouble being the most awesome burger on the planet. Sure it is.

TetrisPlayer3223@reddit
Because it shows you have no knowledge about vehicles. You sound like a typical backyard scotty kimler type mechanic with the "all cars are shit except a 1996 Toyota Corolla"
wintersXP64@reddit
yeah I have no knowledge of cars. I love cars in general and am trying to get into them. Saving up for a car now that I finally have my first job. I really want to experiment with them and fix them on my own to learn better. I know people here know a lot more than me which is why I commented so that others would challenge this statement. Best I know about toyotas is what I was told by others. Most people told me they are reliable for a first car.
No_Win7658@reddit
The problem is you don’t really now. Some do, others are kids that just watched BS on YouTube.
I commented on a Volvo sub recently. These guys were also saying Volvo is reliable and bmw is plastic garbage. The facts and stats heavily contradicts this , but the problem is they are not rational - they are blind fans of a certain brand. We probably all are to some extend. For me it’s mostly Porsche / BMW / Miata because correct wheel drive … so indeed don’t take social media as factual , ever. You can ask but you should validate on things like JD power
TetrisPlayer3223@reddit
Never, and I mean never take opinions from social media when it comes to cars. You can even ignore mine. You know how to average person is a moron? Yeah well that transfers to the car community and you hear stuff like "only Toyotas are good" "all audis are shit" "never buy french cars" etc etc etc from people who don't understand what oil does in their engine.
There are many great recources online though: - Youtube channels such as ChrisFix, M539, Different car reviews, GearheadBrian, and many more which provide factual and useful information which can help get into cars and servicing them
About your claim regarding sports cars. You have many many sports cars with very good reliability, for example the Toyota Celica (it's an older one I know, but mechanically very simple), a newer E46, Audi A5 or even a Peugeot 407 Coupe. One thing I would like you to know is that all cars have upsides and downsides, you just have to know about them and be ready to replace things that will need replacing.
Even the most basic Toyota Corolla can be the worst car you've ever had if it hasn't been maintained - No oil changes, no washing and it can get easily expensive.
But yeah TLDR: Don't listen to social media, do your research and search for facts, not opinions
No_Win7658@reddit
The exagerated adoration of toyota online. The brand has been having it’s fair share of reliability issues. No problem for me and it’s still a reliable brand - its just not what some people on social media make it out to be - it’s not magic. Thry do make mistakes and thry do need proper maintenance .
And this Goes very far - even when they rebadge a citroen - It has better consumer feedback on reliability while its literally the same car.

I said regular driver - you claimed DB’s can’t be exciting .. stop the BS - just admit you never drove a proper car in your life
AppropriateDeal1034@reddit

I didn't say regular people wanted exciting, I didn't even say I wanted exciting, I just don't want the car equivalent of beige. EVs are crap and until they have less weight and more range, and aren't all jacked up SUVs / crossovers with zero luggage space because it's full of batteries, then I won't be getting one.
No_Win7658@reddit
No you said EVs can’t be exciting and you said there are zero good wagons. You wrote it man, why is it this hard?
AppropriateDeal1034@reddit
I said, and I've gone back to get the quote, that EVs are "as exciting to me as a washing machine", which is my personal opinion of just how goddam boring they are to me, if you find flooring it in a straight line until your drivetrain falls out exciting, then you do you. As for good EV wagons, I've yet to find one, and despite asking what your (apparently amazing) choice is, twice, you've failed to answer...so...
No_Win7658@reddit
Ok kiddo - I have a taycan ST. Considered by most car journalist a real sportscar , exciting, fast on a track AND a wagon .. and it’s not exactly only going fast in a straight line. My only beef is actually that its to competent because even with electronics deactivated the ass will only move that much . I know it’s not exactly in everyones bidget, but it does prove an EV can be good even for a car guy… for a non car guy… well you guys all want SUVs so you hate driving and want to be disonnected from the road .. so why would you not get an EV?

I, as a regular person, who currently owns a practical and reasonably priced 10+ year old diesel estate and would like to get an EV. My requirement are that it's affordable, not super boring, can go more than 200 miles without recharging, and is comparative in comfort and space.
Your answer is buy something that costs almost as much as my house did, and ticks none of the other boxes other than being amazing on track, which considering I'm just a regular guy, is of zero importance to me.
No_Win7658@reddit
You have done nothing but move goalposts
AppropriateDeal1034@reddit
I don't want a crossover because they're tiny inside and stupid, I want a wagon which I've said from the start. I've not moved goalposts at all, and the only good EV "wagon" you've mentioned is overpriced and utterly unsuitable as well as being smaller than a mid-sized wagon. My current car has nearly twice the luggage capacity of the taycan so again, if you want to convince me that EVs are good then stop insulting me, stop accusing me of changing the goalposts (which I haven't), and change my mind...

KitKat_1979@reddit
On point one, I take it you’ve never farmed and needed to haul machinery or a trailer full of livestock. Pickup is the only option capable of those things. There are a lot of people who have them that don’t need them, but there are some jobs pickups are a necessity for.
No_Win7658@reddit
How come pickups are a rarity in Europe? You think we don’t have farms ? And do all these millions of idiots in pickups in the US all farm? I don’t think so.
If you really need something heavy. Get a landcruiser - at least it’s not that obnoxious
KitKat_1979@reddit
Many use tractors locally over short distances, but if they’re hauling over a long distance, it’s still going to be a truck. US rural areas and the distances that need to be traveled are far more vast than Europe and tractors aren’t as fast, use more fuel, and cannot be legally driven on major four lanes and interstates that connect the places we often need to go.
On the low end, a full grown dairy cow weighs 1200 pounds. If you need to haul even 10 of them very far at all (not at all uncommon and it’s too few to use a semi for), you’re double the towing capacity of a landcruiser. 🤣
