Rifle case camp kitchen

Built a portable kitchen setup inside an Apache 9800 Weatherproof Protective Rifle Case — and I'm honestly impressed with how well it turned out! 🍳
Everything packs away clean, stays dry, and sets up in seconds wherever we go. Super flexible for camping, tailgates, or just cooking in the driveway.

I’m about to start a build out doing something very similar. Your set up is a really awesome reference point!
2 questions : 1) for the drop down Molle panel table top ( I’ll be using ACM, maybe 3mm, maybe 6mm ) is it hinged to the containers lid? Or does it just rest there / slide into a resting point?
2) do you have any photos of it closed up? Do you have any issues with it protruding too far from the vehicle? Did it make any notable difference on mpg?

I'll try to grab some shots of it closed up next time I'm out at the vehicle. As for protruding — yeah, it sticks out about 8 inches on each side once you factor in the water rotopaxes on the opposite side, so the whole rig is wider than stock. Takes some getting used to on tighter trails but I'm pretty dialed in now. On MPG, honestly couldn't tell you a clean before/after since I'm already running an overlanding build — roof top tent, 35s, the works — so I'm sitting around 10 MPG regardless. At that point a few more inches of stuff hanging off the sides doesn't really move the needle.

you can see it in the mirror.

Got the idea from LLOD too, it’s helped out tremendously with room.

Great idea. Might have to steal it from you.

Brilliant!
smashnmashbruh@reddit
What stove and rack?
arik12@reddit (OP)
Stealth-Jet Solo Camp Stove => https://zempirecamping.com/products/stealth-jet-solo-camp-stove
It is ultra-low profile with removable feet. So I did screw in magnet feet to give it more stability.

Thank you

I’ve been looking for a low pro version that’s better. I have a heavy dual burner and I have a pocket rocket and they’re both the extremes.

Pretty sweet! I wonder if once you add a full pot or a cast iron pan if it will be too much weight for the box hinge holding it all up?
arik12@reddit (OP)
I did test it with 12in cast iron skillet. Had no problems
Nightshade400@reddit
That is really slick. I may steal that idea because I have been struggling with kitchen setup for a while now.
Aguavida1@reddit
Love it!
EinfachOrangensaft7@reddit
Is it easy to take off and put back on? This seems perfect for me since I dont want to carry all my gear with me at all times.
arik12@reddit (OP)
Yea it just attached with 4 bolts to the bed rack.
EinfachOrangensaft7@reddit
Sweet, thanks for sharing! Will definitely look into doing something like this for my truck.
Commercial-Stage-433@reddit
Very nice! Got mine in a pelican v800, what is the name of your organizers in the case? Not sure what to get i was looking at luggage organizers myself.
arik12@reddit (OP)
For the organizer, I repurposed this one from my awning setup: https://www.ironman4x4.com/products/awning-camp-organizer
Just had it cut down and re-sewn to fit perfectly inside the case. Worked out way better than buying something new — and the pocket layout is already dialed for kitchen gear.

My first thought upon reading the post title: "that sounds kind of ...dumb" After seeing what you did: "oh my god, I need to do exactly that, it's the most amazing thing I've ever seen".
How does this attach to your truck? Could it be easily stowed and carried in another vehicle as needed?
arik12@reddit (OP)
I just drilled 4 holes and bolted to bed rack

I know what YT channel you watch 👀

Great idea!! I may use it for shelving for my overland trailer. Definitely need mive shelving.
Looks good, and practical, win, win!

What case did you use? I LOVE this Idea 💡

Apache 9800 Weatherproof Protective Rifle Case
desertSkateRatt@reddit
Have you had it out under wet conditions? I had a plano case on my rack on top of the truck and even though it was "waterproof", it definitely wasnt. If I knew id be out in rain, I'd put everything in it in dry bags.
That said, I really like this set up and have been thinking about doing something somewhat similar to the fender rack things with one of the smaller apache cases.
Wide_Assignment8859@reddit
I have these same cases mounted to my roof rack and have not ever experienced any issues with leaking. They aren’t mounted at an angle like this one, but I’ve been really happy with them, especially with the price.
funkfreshy@reddit
Well done 👍
realaabremer@reddit
Nice work 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Kermit-de-frog1@reddit
I can’t see how the case is mounted to the rack , but at the absolute minimum I recommend fender washers giving a min 2” dia at six points. Preferably 2” bar stock that tie top to bottom at three points ( front , middle, rear) vertically. I’ve used both pelican and Apache cases in adv motorcycling ( top and side cases/panniers) and learned this lesson through a LOT of experimenting .
LOVE the setup you have though! And it possible it doesn’t experience the same vertical and vibrational stresses mine did on a moto given the trucks suspension .
Bagheera383@reddit
Oh damn. This is slick as hell
Lost_On_Lot@reddit
Slick!
KingFury424@reddit
Damn, thats one hell of a good idea!
DrZedex@reddit
This is genius. Would be relatively easy to design to be removed intact for the off-season.
desertSkateRatt@reddit
I'm sure it would be possible to DIY up something similar to what "The Mounting Company" offers that would make it easily removable.
TombaughRegi0@reddit
Looks like a smaller clone of Last Line of Defenses build (see YouTube). I like the wider table in his version.
hawkmanj@reddit
How did you find the molle table top panel?
arik12@reddit (OP)
well I had a spare molle panel laying around from Orange Box. https://orangeboxxfabrication.com/products/tundra-cab-behind-seat-economy
However I assume any metal panel of proper size would work in this case. you can choose your own size table.
endlesscoffee@reddit
I would also like this information.
quickhatch25@reddit
Looks like you drilled through the case to mount the straps for the tabletop? Any leaking issues at those points? What kind of hardware did you use?
arik12@reddit (OP)
Yes I drilled. But it's very easy to waterproof with some black caulking from hardware store.
theex0rcist@reddit
I bet you could use some sort of rubber gasket around the holes or just hot glue/ silicone/ jb weld it to make a seal
rienholt@reddit
Love those Oxo outdoor squeeze bottles.
twoferjuan@reddit
Ooooo this is a great idea. I want to do this for my water setup.
SummitReach@reddit
Oh THIS is really cool!!! Gonna take advantage the next time those go on sale, we've been trying to find a good way to optimize our kitchen and this may just be it!
