New turbo engine, getting the bugs worked out before dyno time and then the track.

I’m a CNC programmer/ machinist by trade. I have a pretty nice home shop.
Draked1@reddit
Clearly a speed maniac considering you have that turbo bug and a fucking 1100 factory Aprilia
AntC_808@reddit (OP)
I’ve had a lot of fast motorcycles and still do have a bunch of fast bikes, modern and vintage. The bug is my one truly fast car.
This was my shootout bike back around 2000, 7.80s@180+
AntC_808@reddit (OP)
That was my introduction to endurance racing…
My Ex Son-in-law was an extremely fast racer. He rode for WERA Endurance champions Army of Darkness. They retired, and I was tapped to be crew chief for his new team, Brand X. We built 2 2007 GSXR1000s
We were leading Hour 3, first race… this was the result. There was also a broken frame,a demolished big tank that had been in our possession for like 6 hours and the check was still in the builders pocket…
I called around to my dragbike buddies and secured enough parts to build a bike before the next round using the engine and suspension from the crashed bike.
4 years later AoD unretired and I have crewed on that team since.
wera917@reddit
I saw that fairing and was like damn I remember Brand X. Pretty amazing what AoD has done over the years from the FZR days to now. Cool car, fucking bad ass, thanks for posting! 🍻
AntC_808@reddit (OP)
I started doing trackdays about 7 years ago, built a couple of my own race bikes, did a very little bit of racing to have that experience. That’s the main reason it’s been 6 years since I have driven this car, I only have so much resources.
It’s been interesting. If I had started road racing in my 20s or so, I may have been quick.
mikePTH@reddit
I'm mostly curious about the rashed fairing and smashed pipe on the wall...
HewoToYouToo@reddit
I wanna grow up and be like you.
How many parts have you custom made?
AntC_808@reddit (OP)
Career? Thousands.
This car? Probably 100.

Holy shit

I didn’t even know they could be that big. I’m now a little more accepting of the size of that giant turbo! (Although still a little skeptical!)
Looks amazing though!
I love bug variants but never did get one. Enjoy your rewards! But go easy if running in and get dyno tune sooner rather than later.
AntC_808@reddit (OP)
It’s actually smaller than a couple of my NA engines because I wanted a stronger crank(more journal overlap)
If one takes the big financial jump and goes 4” bore (small block Chevy pistons) you can build a 3 loterish engine pretty easily. Lots of machine work.
Admirable-Dark2934@reddit
Everything really is bigger in the US!
I’m sure over bores are more common than I know in UK/EU but I thought 1800cc with a blower was about it here!
Any idea on rough power goals and boost?
I run a Miata 1800 on 14psi, and Toyota 3SGTE on 17-18psi. So not slow but pretty tame compared to other builds.
Coffee_Grains@reddit
What gen 3SGTE do you have and what are you running it in?
Admirable-Dark2934@reddit
Sadly in an ST246 Caldina so a gen 3.5 with bendy rods! It’s called the sporty Prius. Nice enough daily with boost right up, but 4spd trip auto sucks all the fun out of it.
AntC_808@reddit (OP)
Capable of over 500 with enough PSI.
Admirable-Dark2934@reddit
I cannot even start to comprehend how the rest of that car will hold up to that!
Great fun! Thanks for sharing.

Working the "bugs" out. BEAUTIFUL ride, dude!! Would love to have some audio on this one!
clantontann@reddit
What size motor are you turning with that turbo? Is the starter mounted to it in the back or to the engine? Haha!
Individual_Put2261@reddit
Would love to know the bhp & weight roughly. Awesome car
AntC_808@reddit (OP)
Between 400 and 500 depending on boost, per class rules car will weigh 1800(a little under 1700 now)
Individual_Put2261@reddit
That’s awesome ! 😂👏
Local_Bobcat_2000@reddit
That’s loosely 1000hp range in a 4000lb car. Ouch!
AntC_808@reddit (OP)
When it was NA it made close to 250 to the tire.
I described it to V8 people as a 500 hp 283 in a Chevelle. And the 283 has all the water drained out.
wphelps90@reddit
RIF_Internet_Goon@reddit
Sir there is an engine attached to your turbo...
ScoobyRT@reddit
It’s basically a jet engine with some pistons in the way 😂 pretty rad

There's a bug on your turbo
ThatHippyPunk@reddit
That is one hell of a Beetle. My daughter is a Beetle aficionado and loved it too. Pic 1 makes you curious, pick 2 makes the mouth water.
DIYcontinuinty@reddit
Love to see the air-cooled engines on here. Currently building a single port turbo type one, trying to see how much HP I can squeeze out of a mostly stock bottom end by doing some semi exotic top end/ injection things. What does the valve train on your engine look like and how's the driveability with the draw through?
AntC_808@reddit (OP)
Driveability is shit. It loves to be wide open though.
Nothing exotic, all readily available parts. I’ve made some slick rocker stand braces on other engines, with no improvement in HP. With this setup I’d just turn the knob.
basicKitsch@reddit
love a simple drawthrough build :)
IAMN0TSTEVE@reddit
Is that a r53 in the background?
AntC_808@reddit (OP)
Yeah, that’s my daily. Coilovers, big sway bars, poly bushings everywhere, fat 15” wheels.
Kinda beat up, but it runs good with 150k on it. People say they are unreliable but mine has been good to me. I’ve had it 7 years.
I drive old cars. The money most people spend on new cars enables my hobby (really, lifestyle, obsession… it’s better than substance abuse).
IAMN0TSTEVE@reddit
Nice!
flapsmcgee@reddit
Is there an intercooler?
ARottenPear@reddit
Intercoolers don't work great on draw through systems. The intercooler would contain a air/fuel mixture, not just compressed air like a blow-through setup. This creates a lot of challenges with the biggest one being backfire risk inside the intercooler/piping but you also have a lot of difficulty with fuel distribution between cylinders.
It can be done as has been but it takes a lot of very specific design and has a lot of limitations.
AntC_808@reddit (OP)
No.
Soggy-Contract8429@reddit
God this thing fucks so hard
igsgarage@reddit
God-damn
two_minutes_out@reddit
Ok. The bug- sick AF.
The engine- killer, looks like my kind of fun.
But hold up- IS THAT A FUCKING BRIDGEPORT IN YOUR GARAGE?!
Dude. This is goals. Excellent set up. Excellent taste. 11/10.
zhiryst@reddit
I'm not a classic engine kind of guy, but is that carb mixing fuel before the turbo? How does that affect things?
AntC_808@reddit (OP)
Yes, and It affects it by making a bunch of HP .

Welcome aboard VW Airlines...
unwanted_zombie@reddit
Good heavens
06EXTN@reddit
How does it even get traction in first and second lmao
AntC_808@reddit (OP)
It actually works really well. I smacked it in second yesterday and I’m pretty sure the front was in the air.
LeakPimp@reddit
Cars_Music_GoodTimes@reddit
Being active in the air cooled VW community please share the specs! It looks like a 1967 Type I with a draw-thru turbo system.
AntC_808@reddit (OP)
2276 with a big turbo. Turbo kit and engine built by me in my garage. Dave Kawell Weber. I really can’t say that much more, I’ve been helped a lot by a friend who has arguably the fastest street car in the country and am sworn to secrecy.
foamsprayer@reddit
That's gorgeous. Was intercooling ever considered? Obviously that creates it's own packaging challenges
AntC_808@reddit (OP)
Intercooler doesn’t really work with a draw through. The intercooler basically becomes a bomb if the car has a backfire. Evaporation keeps the inlet temps cooler than if it were just air as with EFI.
Just burn $20/gallon gas, make sure your tune is on point and it will live for a while. It does require maintenance.
AntC_808@reddit (OP)
Car has a ton of one off parts, here are my own wide 5 front brake hubs.
ShoemakerMicah@reddit
I see you have fine tastes in motorcycles as well. Nice Aprilia.

I have a jones for them…
WonderWirm@reddit
Is that still air-cooled? How do you manage heat?
AntC_808@reddit (OP)
It doesn’t get hot until you lay into it. Cruising around it doesn’t get that hot. Low compression.
buckyworld@reddit
Clue: they’re air/oil cooled engines.
WonderWirm@reddit
Well yeah, but I don’t think even a built VW engine is going to handle THAT much turbo. Subaru? Porsche?
Hefty_Delay7765@reddit
I like your “getting the bugs out” pun 💕

sir we’re gonna have to charge a dyno tax. we need to hear this! looks fucking awesome, i bet it sounds great.
