First project car recs

Looking for a first project car that at least starts and runs to some extent and I can work on and learn on and maybe add a little speed to it, stuck on picking one nor do I know how to pick one that’s got available parts and is not overly expensive to work on and don’t know what to pick, here’s a list of what I’ve been looking at so far and what interests me 1967-69 impala, mk3 Supra, Lexus ls400,Lexus ls430, 2000 Toyota crown athlete, and Mercedes 190e

The impala and crown are pretty much out of the question for being too old/rusty/not running/rare. The Lexuses (Lexees?) are a good shout, although the ls430 is getting pricey. 190e is great. I would personally choose an n/a 5 speed mk3 supra. They're cheap, cool, fun, and have some.aftermarket support. I'm sure you could get a running/driving one for under $5k still

God I love seeing this here lol.
In all seriousness, there really isn't a better answer to this question! The possibilities are entirely infinite in that a Miata can be a first project that morphs into a track car before becoming a v8 swapped monster or even an offroader.

I realize that, I just think Miata’s are ugly and I’m way to tall for one

S2000 is the other option in the segment that makes sense! I respect not digging the appearance though. Each their own

I’m going to admit my bias and then recommend a 190e.
They’re very reliable and other than the Bosch CIS mechanical fuel injection are very easy to work on (this can be replaced with EFI fairly easily). The nadir of their depreciation cycle has already passed but they still lag behind the other cars of that era in terms of price. Mercedes made a million of them so part sourcing is easy. Most junkyards still have a couple of them in inventory.
The big benefit as a project car is the shear amount of part interchangeability between the 190 and its larger siblings. Want bigger brakes? Any W124 brakes are bolt on, want stiffer pedal feel? That same car you took the brakes off of you can also take the brake booster and MC. Sway bars and some other suspension parts will swap right over too. It lets you do a fair amount of “bigger” projects on a budget. If you want to engine swap or transmission swap the newer M104 or M111 will bolt straight in (wiring can be hard but not expensive). Mercedes has kept the same bolt spacing and hub centric size so the world is your oyster on oem wheel swapping.
The chassis used to have fairly limited aftermarket support but that’s no longer true.
I think they’ve been a little slept on so if you end up going to meets you’ll likely stand out and have a distinct car.

Are they actually easy to work on? Because it’s what I’ll be learning on and all my friends with projects say a Mercedes is the last thing they’d touch because it’s difficult, also the m111 just bolts in? I haven’t seen any info about that is there a vid link or anything you could send for that

Unfortunately 190rev . net is down. That was the holy grail of W201 info. There is a Facebook group and a few of the old gurus are there but it’s not searchable as it once was.
Yes. They’re easy to work on. They’re where I cut my mechanical teeth so to speak. I don’t have any formal mechanic or engineering education.
These were the last of the old school Mercedes on which their old “bullet proof” reputation was built. The engineering of these cars is quite satisfying to admire when you work on them. There’s ample space, enough slack in every wire, and everything you need to access is accessible with standard tools. It is often more complicated and a more involved job than a Cavalier would be but everything makes sense. I learned the phrase in the non ironic sense of “German engineering” on these cars. I’ve just about done everything on the chassis and the only specific tool I’ve had to buy was a spring compressor (also works on Audi of the same vintage iirc).
The M111 bolts in to the factory mounts and has the same bolt pattern for the transmission as the M102/3/4 which makes sourcing transmissions equally easy. I don’t have a video available as all my learning was done when the old 190rev forum was up. There is a ton of info out there though.
I have recommended this platform to a few friends before and none of them have been disappointed. It’s an old underpowered platform. It behaves as such in factory trim but responds to modification better than any chassis I’ve ever worked on. It has taught me more than any other car. As long as you go into it understanding this it will surpass expectations.

Thanks a lot, I really was considering the 190e but friends just deterred me, I’m gonna start looking for one since there’s a abundance of them near me and I honestly love how the car looks and just gives a kind of subtle luxury type of vibe

Toyota is300. Plenty of parts. Plenty of conversions. Can us for anything, cruiser, vip, drag, drift, track.

Impala sounds dope but I feel like you’re going to have An issue of most of the ones you’ll find will already be pretty decent examples or they’ll need a complete restoration. Mk3 Supra’s are dope but you might have a hard time with parts availability. Kinda hard to go wrong with a Lexus, just try and avoid getting a clapper if ya can
Frumpylight55x@reddit (OP)
And for the impalas near me there’s actually a few in mid condition like it looks rust free from pictures but like interior is missing parts or is just messy as hell but definitely looks to need a good amount of work
pooo_pourri@reddit
Tbh if the impalas are rust free and in ok condition do it, you won’t regret it. Old American stuff is stupid easy to work on. Pushrod v8 and carburettors can be tricky to learn compared to modern stuff but watch lots of YouTube and you’ll be fine. Also the way you describe the Lexus situation is kinda meh imo. Other people’s clappers suck to work on and lord only knows what you’ll get. 300k is too much for a first project imo
Frumpylight55x@reddit (OP)
All the Lexus seem to be heavily modded near me or stock with upwards of 300k miles

My MK3 Supra was a fun project, kind of a niche aftermarket though. Nice cruiser of a car. 1UZ swap with the R154, dollar per horsepower was awful. Car got smacked by my tune only Cobalt SS/TC, which itself is a great recommendation imo.
Frumpylight55x@reddit (OP)
When u say niche do you mean hard to find? And cobalt ss I’ve looked into and like but just the look of it hasn’t really grown on me much but I’ll consider it
Poil336@reddit
It was very small, but I also was looking for parts for an engine that never came in it. XAT Racing did a lot for me, lots of swap parts. But, everything you can do with that chassis has been done already, so if you look hard enough, you'll find parts and answers

Sadly I got a friend with the same car as a project and I don’t want to copy because I want to compete with him

Gs Lexus🤷♂️. 300 u can boost it, 4/30=v8. I like the body style better than the LS’s.
