Not related, but I recently learned that the 6 fingered man is Chris Sarandon, who Susan Sarandon took her name from via marriage. Then kept it after divorce

The only way in which The Princess Bride hasn’t aged well is that it fails the [Sexy Lamp Test](https://fanlore.org/wiki/Sexy_Lamp_Test). That is, Princess Buttercup basically doesn’t affect the plot. It’s otherwise a great movie, and still very watchable and quotable. And I still love it. ![gif](giphy|3ohs7Mx78Zt2x2xgbu)

Pushing Westley down the hill and then following him means they are off the trail being followed by Humperdink. Also, the man in black wouldn't be there at all if he wasn't chasing the princess, meaning Inigo doesn't learn where the 6 fingered man is, doesn't get into the castle and doesn't eventually get his revenge. Without true love the plot does not happen, and true love is not a one way street.

If Buttercup were a lamp that Westley really wanted, could the whole movie still have happened? If "pushing westley down the hill" is the only ACTION that advances the plot, it fails the test

Would a lamp declare it doesn't want to be owned by Humperdinck, making him go to the dungeon in a rage and kill Westley? No. Buttercup has agency, makes her own decisions and acts upon them with real consequences for the plot.

I wasn't saying the movie failed the test. I was saying that the person I responded to misunderstood the test. He said it didn't fail the test because of true love and the push. I was saying those arent arguments against the sexy lamp.

even as a kid I knew she was useless with the ROUS. we always used to hold our breath when they fell into that sand pit to see if we could have survived that amount of time without air.
