Which popular movies that we watched in the 80's as kids are actually kid-appropriate for a family movie night now?

😳😬

This is me. I get called ‘smart’ because I do really good at trivia and stuff. Nope. I’m 43 and broke af. I just retain a lot of useless knowledge

I wonder how much of this is due to just being too old to have been properly diagnosed with ADHD…. (On the waiting list).
I can recall a random episode I saw once in the 90’s but can’t find my keys

As a Xennial who recently found out he probably has AuDHD this sounds alarmingly familiar!
SpoonFullOfSugar1111@reddit
Does our entire generation have AuDHD? Where my "gifted" kids at!?! Blessing and a curse fur sure...

I can remember a stupid jingle from a commercial on TV back in the 90s, but for the life of me I can't remember anything I learned in school.
ThePerfectSnare@reddit
A neat thing about how memory works is that surprises tend to stand out more. It has something to do with how the brain can recognize new information as opposed to old information you just forgot. We tend to pay more attention to new experiences, especially when there's some emotion (good, bad or otherwise) attached to it.
It's why we vividly remember things like plot twists and "drops" in songs. It's the sudden change in expectations.
I don't remember learning most of the things I learned in school. School was boring.
I do remember learning the whole "I before E except after C, or when sounding like A as in NEIGHBOR and WEIGH" thing because we were reciting it as a class and the teacher called me out for just mouthing the words. I spelled just fine, but I didn't know the "lyrics" of what we were reciting so I faked it and then tried to claim that I did know them.
She wanted me to recite it in front of the class. I think I may have died of embarrassment because I don't remember what happened next. I do remember studying the fuck out of that stupid rhyme at home, ready to embarrass her the next time she tried to say I didn't know it. I never did get to prove her wrong though.
tl;dr Stupid jingles are memorable to our lizard brains that deliberately remember surprising/intense moments and forget almost everything else.

Me, but with 80s/90s TV...especially game shows. For the last few years I've wondered whether my near-encyclopedia knowledge of certain genres puts me somewhere on the spectrum.

So I got that going for me

You should watch Psych lol

Yes that’s a great suggestion. They’ve had most of the brat pack as guest stars at some point.

And they did a Twin Peaks reunion long before Showtime did The Return.

Anyone up for a line by line recital of Clue?
I’m your adult!
tinglep@reddit (OP)
I watched it three times last week. As soon as Tubi put it up, it went into my rotation. They are actually doing a one night showing in SF for Fathers Day and Tim Curry and Leslie Ann Warren are set to make an appearance.

What is the most obscure 80’s movie that you love? Me and my brother (RIP, woulda been his birthday yesterday) both loved The Big Picture (1989) with Kevin Bacon.
tinglep@reddit (OP)
I’m sorry to hear that. Sticking with Bacon, I lived Quicksilver. My uncle was a delivery guy in the city in the 80s and had a sick 10 speed. Love that movie.

Is there any movies that may not be as well known but should be more recognized?
birdsword@reddit
Strange Brew. I consider under appreciated comedy gold.

One of the finer adaptations of Hamlet.

Rick Moranis putting out an industrial fire with his piss from drinking a literal silo of beer will never be not funny to me and lives rent free in my head.

A rick moranis movie I don’t know? What joy you have brought to my rainy Saturday morning 🤩

Let's Get Harry
Invaders From Mars
The Gate
Lucas
Cobra

What OP is doing when you want an 80s quote
froops@reddit
Maybe more of a trope than a quote, I want to hear about person gets in the vehicle, dramatically turns to passenger and says “let’s drive” and then takes off. Examples and who did it first
