Bro this is a different phalanx bro uts a different this is a Macedonian phalanx bro this isnt a Greek phalanx its a different phalanx this will not be flanked just try it I swear bro just try it please bro this is Macedonian. This is Macedonian, not Greek Greek is more mental bro this is going to relax you there are different phalanxes please
This is a genuine question, can’t you like, fit between the spears? Cant a small group of guys just slide between the spears and not get poked to death?
Anon said “if I didn’t invent it, then who invented it? Did you, Simon invented it? Or did the PTS invented it? Cowards…you try to con, the creater, of the Neurolink? Anonymous created it, and if we didn’t, then we might as well, have created it, because I said so…”
They did, it doubled as a mace that could be detached. Twas a huge problem for many civilizations who would counter spearwalls with armor and two handed cleaving weapons and then get their heads caved in anyway by guys trained to disable armor with crushing attacks.
I have an startegy , bring some 100s elephants make them high on opium & make them run trampling the army , this will break them then throw some cavalry behind those elephants for hunting .
phalanxes arent invincible. outmatch and rout the cavalry with superior cavalry and skirmishers and the phalanxes becomes sitting ducks. Then cut off their baggage train and harass them as they starve.
phalanxes look good with alexander not because theyre immortal perfect heavy infantry, but because alexander's skirmisher and cavalry force were top notch.
In the main battle where alexander fought and beat nomadic horsemen he relied primarily on cavalry skirmishers and artillery
yeah. IIRC there are accounts of the gauls fighting the romans, and the gallic front ranks would collapse fall from exhaustion because they didnt develop an organizational system that allowed regular rotation of troops without the lines getting fucked.
anyonw who knows martial arts can also tell you that fighting for 5+ min is absolutely exhausting, even to trained people. A large part of martial arts combat training is learning when to relax so you dont gas out in 30 seconds.
Exactly, Romans figured this shit out and beat the phalanx because in part they couldn't cycle whereas more flexible roman columns could bring up fresh soldiers
Adding on to this good post: Alexander fought in the vanguard of his Cavalry unit and purposefully wore a signifying helmet with a white plume so he’d get attacked. It’s insane he never died of the many wounds he took along with him winning all of his battles.

Real answer is horseback archers
Ihatenukingkids@reddit
Just regular archers are cheaper and will do the job as well
Obi-Brawn-Kenobi@reddit
True, foot archers save some resources but after researching parthian tactics the anti-pike damage on cav archers is seriously strong

Real answer were roman formations that countered the famous phalanx very easily.

They only countered on uneven ground

Tired of your phalanx getting flanked? Just put another phalanx there
igerardcom@reddit
Yo dawg, I heard you like phalanxes, so we put a phalanx in your phalanx so you can phalanx while you phalanx.

The next row would poke the middle and if you somehow dodge that, the next row would aim towards you.
WishinGay@reddit
No because they can aim/move the spears.

It’s phalanxes as far as the eye can see

Pretty sure they had a counterweight at the back

Imagine the strength required to hold the counterweight

I imagine its less than without the counterweight

adeadhead@reddit
Phalanxes aren't even that effective. Soldiers get tired, and a phalanx makes it very difficult to cycle your soldiers.

The retiarius is outclassed, phalanx is weak on flanks/rear, easily outmanouevered with cavalry abd especially ranged cavalry and skirmishers
