Was/is Milton Keynes a success? How was the project viewed a few years before/after it began?

Spent a bit of time in MK over the years and been here for a bit of a stint recently. It’s certainly unique but I can’t tell if all the ideas that seem to work well in principle actually work in real life. Is there a reason other than costs that a similarly scaled project hasn’t been attempted in the years since?
