Lawsuit vs TeamGroup

I just received an email about TeamGroup
If you purchased a Team Group DDR-3, DDR-4, or DDR-5 DRAM computer memory product, you may be part of a class action settlement.
The United States District Court for the Central District of California authorized this notice.
You are not being sued. This is not a solicitation from a lawyer.
A settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit against Team Group, Inc. ("Team Group" or "Defendant"), alleging it violated the law in connection with the advertised speeds of some of its DDR-3, DDR-4, and DDR-5 dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) products. The Settlement is not an admission of wrongdoing or liability of any kind. The Plaintiffs allege they were led to believe that the advertised speeds were "out of the box" speeds requiring no adjustments to their PCs. Team Group denies all claims of wrongdoing and denies that it violated any law. The Court has not decided which side is right. The Parties have agreed to the Settlement to avoid the uncertainties, burdens, and expenses associated with continuing the case.
Am I a Class Member?

I bought a 32GB kit from them in 2023, DDR5-6000 CL30. It does not run 6000MT/s out of the box and that's what the lawsuit was for. You have to enable it in the BIOS. Oh well, hoping to get enough for maybe some backup RAM. Mine has never given me any problems.

The way these suits work is, some lawyers who specialize in suing companies picked two Team Group customers to be "consultants". They pay the consultants a few thousand to say "yes, I feel so cheated by this big company". The lawyers get a few million. The rest of the customers get $1.99 each

This one looks like the total settlement is only $1.1 million so I wonder how much will be left after lawyer's fees. I submitted my claim for 2 purchases.
There's also a Google settlement but hypothetically if everyone who qualifies for that one actually submits their claim, everyone is getting about $1.

I found the details online.
Claim Depot states:
The $1,100,000 settlement fund will include:
Settlement administration costs: $200,000
Attorneys' fees: Up to $366,666.67
Attorneys' expenses: To be presented to the court for approval at a later date
Service awards to class representatives: Up to $5,000 each
Payments to approved claimants: Remaining settlement funds
jorceshaman@reddit
So about $520k for everyone else.
TallComputerDude@reddit
so people are suing TeamGroup because they didnt know about XMP? That's ridiculous.

That not surprising. Had a 2.5 500GB Team Group SSD that failed within a week & customer support was non responsive. I've also heard about a few other quality issues complaints from people who got Team Group products.

That's odd. I've had a few TeamGroup kits and they've all run at their rated speed.

How could we possibly know if you are a class member? Did you or did you not purchase one of the items covered by this case during the period in question?
ClockOk8138@reddit (OP)

Wasn't this because the speeds marked on the box and RAM is the xmp speeds and not the stock jdec speeds? And because some people don't know about enabling xmp on their systems, they feel "cheated"?
sticks435@reddit
Sounds like it, but then every single RAM maker would have a lawsuit filed against them since they all do that.

I got the same email. It’s hard to find solid info online that corroborates the email tho. The names, lawyers, etc are right, but I can’t find (with my weak google-fu) an actual ruling that shows they’re sending out claim letters. The recent G Skill settlement doesn’t help since it tends to murky up the search results as well. Plus the email specifically says “don’t ask the courts or lawyers about this”, which was enough to make me payse
