Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Did you have to open a second box?
Aggravating_Media_59@reddit
In 1 row or 2?
beerforbears@reddit
At least 5, depending on the bread
Thoughtful_giant13@reddit
When I ate fish…. Four, so it was easy to slice down the middle, with ketchup and oregano.
What_Reality_@reddit
I love fish finger sandwiches. Mum used to make them for me as a kid. For me it’s 5, tartar salt and lemon
Ok-Literature473@reddit
Enough to fill end to end, lots of butter and ketchup
MissingScore777@reddit
Butter and a sauce is a war crime.
Pick one.
slackingindepth3@reddit
It’s literally DELICIOUS
MissingScore777@reddit
I can't stand mixing butter with another form of moisture like that.
I'm not a big butter fan generally though.
It's a bit too sweet and creamy for use in savoury foods for my tastes.
PinItYouFairy@reddit
This view is mental. “I don’t like X in my sandwich… but of course I don’t like X”. Duh genius if you don’t like the ingredient you aren’t going to like it in your sandwich!
MissingScore777@reddit
It's butter mate, it's not that serious.
VolcanicBear@reddit
You're the one that called combining it with something a war crime.
MissingScore777@reddit
It's really common to use that term jokingly.
VolcanicBear@reddit
It's also common for people to make jokes about your comments.
Taking this all a bit personally lmao.
MissingScore777@reddit
I'm the one that was still making lighthearted comments whereas you were the one replying seriously.
So I don't think I'm the one taking anything personally.
I'm finding it quite amusing that criticism of butter is all it takes to get under people's skin.
VolcanicBear@reddit
Oh I don't care what people think about butter. Everyone has different tastes.
I just find it amusing that some would call something a war crime and then say it's not that deep.
War crimes are very deep.
MissingScore777@reddit
Do you always take language so literally?
If so you must have a hard time with the nuance of day to day communication.
VolcanicBear@reddit
Nah, extremely rarely in fact.
Do you always struggle to understand when someone's obviously taking the piss?
MissingScore777@reddit
No and in fact I can spot when someone is floundering and so does a 180 and pretends it was all a piss take.
VolcanicBear@reddit
Jesus Christ it's talking about butter and war crimes on a UK subreddit dude.
You might really want to check your ability to spot that if you genuinely think that's what I've done.
You seemed to be getting frustrated by, so I thought I'd prod you about your use of language lmfao.
MissingScore777@reddit
Sure you did.
VolcanicBear@reddit
Yes, because I found it quite amusing to call something a war crime then called it not that serious.
It was an entertaining juxtaposition.
Take care. I don't honestly think you genuinely believe I've done a 180, I think you've just used that to try and assuage your own embarrassment at misunderstanding the slight jibe.
At least I hope you don't lmao.
MissingScore777@reddit
Cool explanation, very convincing.
VolcanicBear@reddit
Glad we're on the same page.
PinItYouFairy@reddit
I enjoyed this but I gave up replying to the previous commenter when I saw their posting history and saw they had a whole post in r/AskUK asking about whether anyone else thought butter tasted sweet and basically everyone else was like “lol no” and yeah.
Cool convo guys though hope you both learned something from it
BuGMoiDroit@reddit
Taste aside, butter actually forms a nifty hydrophobic barrier to stop the sauce from making the bread mushy.
MissingScore777@reddit
Ah but I'm one of those people that enjoys soggy bread. Love it in a tuna sandwich when you get soggy tuna bread.
Never had a sauce make bread soggy unless you count gravy.
BuGMoiDroit@reddit
Have to admit I do like a tuna crunch deli roll when it's had enough time to soak into the bread a bit.
I put mushy peas in fish finger sandwiches, they would certainly go fully soggy without butter if left for a while.
MissingScore777@reddit
Calling mushy peas a 'sauce' feels like a stretch.
That's just another filling imo, albeit a soft one.
PrinceBert@reddit
Butter makes EVERYTHING better so obviously it's an addition not a choice.
Ok-Literature473@reddit
Make me
MissingScore777@reddit
How would I do that?
Seems challenging to say the least.
Ok-Literature473@reddit
Guess I’ll continue my wylie ways.
fezzuk@reddit

Haha imagine getting reported over fish fingers and tartare sauce 😂
Scared-Salary9513@reddit
Four. Cheap n nasty white bread, cheddar and ketchup. Don’t knock it til you’ve tried it!
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Grated cheese or sliced?
Scared-Salary9513@reddit
Grated, melts better 🙂↕️
Sea-Still5427@reddit
For me, it's four, ideally with tartare sauce, or my homemade version which is a few cornichons and capers chopped into full fat mayo with a squeeze of lemon.
phatboi23@reddit
i'm a dirty slag for 4 fingers, cheapest white bread ever made, red sauce and a good squish. lol
Android109@reddit
Try mint sauce. You will not believe it.
Sea-Still5427@reddit
My second choice would probably be sweet chilli jam.
ParticularSalt947@reddit
That homemade tartare sauce already makes this sound gourmet
Sea-Still5427@reddit
It's like having a gastro pub in your kitchen! I make it with a slightly chunky texture because I love each of the ingredients in their own right.
Maximo_0se@reddit
Dried dill, gherkins, capers in mayo. Haven’t added lemon to it yet so that’s for tomorrow.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Will have to try that!
katdawwg@reddit
Four fish fingers in the perfect sandwich. Must be battered, not breaded.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Ah I’m more breaded than battered. Find the battered is too rich.
Gammabrunta@reddit
Gluten free bread so 3 fills it.
lofty_1886@reddit
5 in each sarnie, cheese, tartar sauce 👌🏻
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Oh someone else who has cheese! What kind?
lofty_1886@reddit
Depends what I'm feeling. Usually cheddar but sometimes I do like a slice of burger cheese in them.
younevershouldnt@reddit
Four is the standard, rarely anything else
StarGazing55@reddit
I always used to have 4, buttered bread, and plenty of vinegar on the fish fingers. But now, after searching through ALL the comments for another vinegar lover, I now feel a bit like a lonely weirdo.
kotyonoks@reddit
I drown my fish finger sandwiches in vinegar. You're not alone! I mean mine are m&s vegan fish fingers these days but still! VINEGAR PURISTS!
jecowa@reddit
I use vegan fish too. With some thin, hearty bread, sliced tomato, and mayo. I love mayo with tomato, but I’m going to try vinegar next time. Anything besides vegan fish and vinegar on it?
kotyonoks@reddit
A sprinkle of salt, and whatever vegan butter I have on hand! I love tomatoes, so I may have to give mayo and tomato a try next time.
StarGazing55@reddit
Wahoo! I'm absolutely the same, drown 'em good and proper! Nothing wrong with a vegan fish finger, I think they are quite impressive these days in likeness. VINEGAR PURISTS!
(Going to start signing off more comments like this, no context given.)
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
No just a purist!
StarGazing55@reddit
Thank you OP! That makes me feel loads better. I'm impressed by your 5 finger sandwich and your post has really made me crave one, I know what I'm having for lunch tomorrow!
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
You are very welcome!
Enjoy your fish finger sandwich tomorrow.
Little_st4r@reddit
Four. But I buy the taste the difference ones from Sainsbury's and they're HUGE
Arthurs0ul@reddit
4 battered fish fingers as they come in packs of 8. Seed sensation hovis, butter, mature cheddar sliced, ketchup mayo, salad lil hot sauce, diagonal sliced
TopBumblebee9954@reddit
Depends how many are in the pack. 4 for 8 packs. 5 for 10 packs. 4 again for 12 packs.
Arthurs0ul@reddit
Stunning and brave
bil7@reddit
Good bread, toasted lightly, buttered
Sauce mix of mostly mayo, some hot sauce, dash ketchup
Sliced cucumber, sliced gherkin, sliced cherry tomato with s+p, some leaves
It's amazing
NoodleDoodlesocks@reddit
Four with brown sauce.
Safebox@reddit
Sometimes I think my American friends are right that we do weird things with our food. Then I see something like this and I'm reminded they've probably never enjoyed a simple pleasure like a fish finger butty.
G17Gen3@reddit
Fish fingers, aka fish sticks, are American in origin. We are very familiar with fish sticks.
Safebox@reddit
It's not that simple. The Wikipedia article calls them "fish fingers" and says they're of British origin going back to at least 1900. The US mass produced them first as "Gorton's Fish Sticks" but when Birdseye brought them to market in the UK they used the more familiar term "fish fingers".
Also I never said youse weren't familiar with them, only unfamiliar with putting them in a sandwich.
G17Gen3@reddit
We are familiar with fish sticks in sandwiches. The slightly large, triangular frozen pieces are more popular here for sandwich making, but I've ate many a fish stick sandwich. Make mine with tartar sauce and ketchup.
Safebox@reddit
I love a bit of mayo or brown sauce in mine...but I've been told both are sacrilege by both Brits and Americans alike 😂.
G17Gen3@reddit
If I am out of tartar sauce, then I'm definitely with you on the mayo.
tobee777@reddit
5 fish fingers, butter, sliced tomato, sliced raw onion, lettuce and way more tartare sauce than that photo! Probably while bread, maybe granary if I’m feeling fancy 😉
tobee777@reddit
If I’m feeling really daring - a slice of cheddar cheese
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Do you cook that for a bit extra so it melts?
tobee777@reddit
No I’m usually too impatient by then!
Dd_8630@reddit
No no on, they don't go sideways up. That's the sin of usury, you're exploiting the natural state of affairs.
Your fish fingers must be laid flat.
KieranCrumlish@reddit
4 with butter, tartare sauce and ketchup delicious
Littleleicesterfoxy@reddit
I have 4, with a slice of plastic cheese melted on the top and with mayo and shredded iceberg lettuce (for crispness) on two slices of very lightly toasted white bread.
mikolv2@reddit
3, I don't like too much fish finger for a given amount of bread. Ratio is important. If I was hungry enough for more fish fingers, I'd have 2 sandwiches.
Smithy0612@reddit
5.. an Asda pack holds 10 so 2 sandwiches
Amazing-Heron-105@reddit
However many it takes to go crust to crust obviously
ReasonableAward7959@reddit
So, personally it's 4/5 depending on what it takes to completely cover the width/height of the bread.
However I was once at a mates house and he asked if I wanted a fish finger butty, I said yes, however what he went on to do was perhaps the greatest culinary crime I've ever seen, I've scrolled all the comments and not seen anyone who does the same thing as he did....
He cooked 6 fish fingers- 3 for each of us and then mashed them with a fork and spread them on the bread!
Somehow we've remained friends but I reference it anytime he talks about food or food standards etc.
NibblyPig@reddit
It's half a box, because I don't want to end up with 2 fish fingers or heaven forbid one fish finger left, I'm never gonna turn the oven on just for one
-mister_oddball-@reddit
4 on a white barm cake, plenty salad and a slice of cheese.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Cheese?!
-mister_oddball-@reddit
Secret ingredient !
PoshFarmBoy@reddit
5 with cheese and brown sauce 😋
Fluffy_Marionberry54@reddit
I’m sorry but that spread work is despicable. Dry bread at the edges? What’s wrong with you?
KillerFISH91@reddit
I usually do 8 fish fingers. 6 on the sandwich and 2 to snack on
ScumFromBrum@reddit
4, no butter, spread the bread with ketchup, fork the fish fingers into the bread and then eat
Jv01@reddit
5 is outrageous,, how does the slice work?! 4, white bloomer, butter one side, homemade tartar sauce the other, vinegar, salt
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
The middle finger is sliced in half (roughly!).
What’s your tartare recipe?
Jv01@reddit
I mean I can't me mad at extra fingers, collateral fallout is a bonus https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/quicktartaresauce_67777 Mayo from scratch ideally but rarely have the time
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Thank you!

SidewaysSky@reddit
4 but I squish them down with a fork to cover the bread. Fishfingers have to battered rather than breaded too
Hopeful_Screen_5522@reddit
4 is the magic number
personofalltrades@reddit
I usually go for 4 but my husband prefers 5. I have mine on wholemeal bread (preferably very seedy) with Kewpie mayo and kimchi for crunch and tang. If no kimchi then I'll have ketchup or sriracha
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Will have to try the kimchi next time. Bought some on offer the other week.
JeffSergeant@reddit
If god had meant us to have less than 5 fish fingers in a sandwich, he wouldn't have given fish 5 fingers on each hand.
No-Temperature1604@reddit
The more the better and some fish fingers in the side please.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
I’m usually a four fish finger person but thought I would have 5 this evening.
Michael-Hunt-@reddit

Five fish fingers Jeremy? That's insane
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Will be on the lunchtime show next week no doubt. The decadence!
SuboptimalOutcome@reddit
Had one yesterday, but I only had four fish fingers left. Jason's white sourdough roll and Sauce Shop original hot sauce.
Maximo_0se@reddit
How in the fish finger did you manage to get 4 in one of those rolls? 3 is pushing it already.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
See I usually have 4, then another 4 another time but there are 2 left in the box which is not nearly enough!
SuboptimalOutcome@reddit
My problem was I had six the last time.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Yes there’s always that risk of having the wrong amount, then forgetting to replace the box.
fezzuk@reddit
Yeah i end up just cookkng the whole box and having a couple on the side.
buy_me_a_pint@reddit
For things like fish fingers and chicken goujons
Have to be decent bread and butter on the side , no mayo or salad cream or HP , hot sauce etc.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Purist.
MuchPromotion1781@reddit
4 in the sandwich. One extra on the side for luck.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
A popular choice.
The extra one often eaten standing up.
AbjectGovernment1247@reddit
3 but they from M&S and they are bigger than other brands so 3 fits nicely if you lay them from top to bottom.
I did try 4 but it kept falling out.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Mine were wedged with tartare.
Friendlyappletree@reddit
Normally 4, but to be fair I boost mine with cheese and a couple of rashers of bacon. Don't knock it til you've tried it.
TheWyrdSmyth@reddit
My mum used to have 4 fish fingers, white bread, toasted on one side - toasted side of bread in the inside of the sandwich - with plastic burger cheese, tartar sauce, and some salad leaves.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Weird or what?!
TheWyrdSmyth@reddit
I don't like fish fingers personally, so can't really comment - but it was one of her favourites.
I have been known to do that half toasted trick for other sandwiches with a soft/saucy filling - it helps keep its structure, and you get a nice soft outer bite, with a toasty crispy texture inside.
nameymcnameyboy@reddit
As many as it takes.
cborne943@reddit
Hovis Seeded bread, 5 fish fingers and ketchup. Oh and none of that green shit like you in your picture 😂
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
An unpopular choice it would seem!
Fresh-Regret9245@reddit

Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)

Single-Aardvark9330@reddit
Three in white bread with ketchup
chemo92@reddit
As many as will fit, one layer. Dip it in ketchup.
Does anyone else fry them in a bit of olive oil like me?

Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
You know I don’t think I’ve ever fried a fish finger. Always oven cooked but now air fryer.
chemo92@reddit

Robtimus_prime89@reddit
5 if they’re regular sized, but 3 if they’re chonky ones.

Lidl do a box of 6 'deluxe' chunky haddock fish fingers and 3 of them perfectly cover a slice of bread...so of course I have 2 sandwiches, 3 in each with lettuce and tartare sauce.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
I’ve had the chunky ones before but these only take 11 mins in the air fryer and I’d been thinking about it all day!
Gutted-ewok@reddit
Double Decker sandwich, 3 for each layer.
JKL246@reddit

purple52@reddit
Someone's spilt some green stuff on it. Otherwise solid effort. More tartare sauce needed.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)

RBisoldandtired@reddit
Five fish fingers, Jeremy?
ExactIsland5915@reddit
I usually go for 4, love it on tiger bread with tartare sauce and buttered green peas inside
thehewguy1888@reddit
I am odd........ It has to be an even number so 4
TeaAndCrumpetGhoul@reddit
Depends if I put them flat on their backs or on their sides. Now, I am a greedy fat fuck so I'll put them on their sides so I can stuff more into my little obese mouth. So 8. And I raw dog the sandwich. No condiments. No butter. No rocket. No salad. Just fish, fingers and brown bread without the crusts cut off.
Sparko_Marco@reddit
Depends on the size, probably 3 or 4 but I'd have more than one sandwich rather than over fill one.
SirGranular@reddit
4 on the bottom layer then 2 on top to give 3 in each half once cut. Butter and salt.
TSC-99@reddit
Disappointing bread
