I think that's exactly what you're supposed to do. I've bought a bag of compost from out the front of Morrisons before, amongst other things, and that was what I did. I even bought a railway sleeper from outside Morrisons once anr had to go round the shop with that in my trolley!

I normally squeeze through one of the open manned tills, look at the boxes, pick one and come back through. Leave it on an empty check out and let the cashier know I'm going to get it in a minute. Then do my shop, admittedly I'm normally just looking for cheap fruit to chuck in a smoothie so not wandering off to do a big shop and leaving it there for ages.

OP clearly does want them, as they wouldn't have bothered making a post asking how to get them otherwise. They also want them *before* doing the rest of the shop, which necessitates the extra step. Otherwise just tell the person on the till you want one and go grab it just before you pay. It's not hard.

Lidl till assistants aren't as aggressive as Aldi and there's space enough like a checkout at a normal supermarket for them to scan everything, I've had to go off on a couple occasions and something extra, they just scanned everything through and even allowed me to pack.

That's the point of lidl. The bench across from the till? That's the packing Bench. You put your stuff in your trolley. Pay. Then pack it on that bench in your own time. It's a European thing. If everyone did it, there would be less queues but everyone's too entitled and would rather just complain about the staff scanning too quickly. The more modern lidl buildings tend to have larger tills because they realised people couldn't follow basic packing etiquette. Another thing people bitch about is self service "why do i have to do my own packing, it's what the cashier is for". It's something like 65% of shoppers go through self service, and rising, and people wonder why they keep removing manned tills. Supply and demand.

Yeah our old Aldi has this, where there's one till that's has a big space to catch your stuff and all the others have a tiny ledge. Our current Lidl has decent sized till counters at least, and half of the self checkouts have large packing bit, the other half have small ones.

That’s it exactly! The layout is not intuitive yet everyone else seems to know where they are going. If you don’t keep moving fast while grabbing things off the shelf as you pass, you get dirty looks like you’re a dawdler in London Underground at rush hour. The lights are so bright and the shelves are too high and the aisles are too narrow for anyone to pass you if you dare to stop to think about what you want to choose. I’m having palpitations just thinking about it 😂

The brand new Lidl in Wootton Bassett has the European style Aldi/lidl tills which have no room at all, and it's a huge (for lidl) store, so they had plenty of room to put in more normal for the UK ones which all the others around here have.

That still doesn't really help you to know what to buy on the rest of your shop, though It would work if you knew there were always eg wonky carrots or wonky cucumbers in stock, but since the wonky section is luck of the draw it makes purchasing any other veg in the store a bit of a lottery If I need carrots, I've either got to pick up normal carrots first (in which case why would I then buy wonky ones too, and having two lots of carrots?) or not pick them up and risk having no carrots at all

I check if they have some when I arrive. If they do I check the contents of them then choose one and ask one of the people on the tills if I can put it on a spare till until I’ve done my other shopping. They always say yes. It helps because I can cross things off my list if they are in the box. And at £2 for stuff that should be at least 5x that amount they are great if you are going to use the stuff in the next few days. I do find that a lot of the boxes near me are bought by people running catering businesses / takeaways. There’s always often people there buying 4 or 5 of them.

Fruit and veg that isn't GMO to last longer, starts to degrade as soon as it's picked. Refrigeration helps to slow that but nothing will last long because decomposition is natural and happens. Are you seriously complaining that your veg doesn't keep for weeks? It isn't supposed to. It needs to be used with a couple of days. I buy fresh veg the day it'll be used, if I need it to keep, I buy frozen which is just as good as fresh.

Decades ago my sister did weekend work at a veg packing plant she used to say they were told to sort the veg by best quality for Waitrose, next Sainsbury’s tescos, 3rd quality etc. (I don’t think there was any aldi Lidl back then so can’t remember what they were but they did use to grade it differently to send to different supermarkets

I never shop at lidl, the one near me, its set up like a prison , all eyes watching uou, loads of security gates just to enter... never mind the scan receipt to exit! Its demeaning, the staff arent to kind either (or werent last time i popped in, as i forgot i hate that place). I do shop around though, i have an aldi, home bargains, asda and tesco very close proximity to my home, i also habe a farmfoods and the dodgy lidl a bit further away, but 'doable'. I shop at most, they all put wonky veg and short code stuff in designated areas, thats easy for customers to see, in store, prior to checkouts. I don't get why they would do that? My son swears by that crappy shop too, he uses it a lot, suppose its practically next door to him.

Here in Germany there's a shelf with paper bags of wonky/battered/bit elderly veg. They all cost 3 euro but they've all been weighed and have that marked on them with black pen. So theoretically you could do some substitution, but it would be a right faff and a performance. Also, it's Germany and by and large people are doing the correct thing 🤣

I always assumed and thought them boxes after the check out were free boxes of veg which you could help yourself. The thing is I've only ever seen one box on the packaging bench so just helped myself to the veg. No one has ever stopped me or said anything. I just assumed it was free veg they store were just giving away.

I've never understood this with Lidl , Sainsbury's have their wonky fruit and veg boxes in the veg section at the end of the aisle which has always made more sense to me.

Surely customers need to see what's in the wonky veg boxes before they've browsed the veg section and chosen other things? They should be by the entrance in a sealed box, and then you ask a member of staff to get you one and they take it to the till. Or something.

I don't know why people are giving you snarky answers...well, I do, but it's a shame because I get that you're just trying to figure out a way that isn't a massive waste of time. It seems like the only option is inefficient. You would have queue to buy the box first, and then do your shopping based on the contents of the box. Which means then queuing a second time to buy the rest of the stuff you want to put with the veg from the box. Sure you could buy the box at the end and whatever you get in the box ends up going with whatever you already bought, flavour profiles be damned. I'm sorry, OP, Reddit can't help you when you care about such minutia, you're just gonna have to put 2 cucumbers and a pack of watercress in with the stewing steak you bought. Good luck!

My point is that I can only see them after I've done my shopping, so I couldn't plan a shop around the wonky veg. I don't need additional veg, I want to substitute my perfect veg. I could ask at the checkout but they're too busy throwing my broccoli at my face and I'm knackered from work.

Someone is in a shop and could spend probably 10-15s interacting with a staff member, but instead come on here... It's worrying the lengths people will go to to avoid interacting directly with other humans. I thought I was bad, but stuff I got told off for at work 20 years ago is now normalised.

I didnt see them till i left after i paid. I dont normally shop in lidl so I only realised when i saw someone else take one. They hadnt really advertised them at all, they were next to the foodbank ironically so i presumed they were for that
