.308 is very overkill for a bottleneck cartridge at home defense ranges. You're going to punch straight through a target and waste most of the energy. This is more to keep overall length down with a can on the gun.

If you want displacement, 12ga is in the ballpark of .70 caliber.

A 440gr slug doing 1,400 fps at the muzzle will rip a limb off.

I'd keep the 11.5" and if you're really unconfident in it, go A300 or 1301.
