Do you actually track what you spend on your project car?

I’m about 3 months into my foxbody build and I’ve already lost track of what I’ve spent.
Parts, tools, gaskets, fluids, random hardware, shipping, etc. are all over the place. Some receipts are in my email, some are in my notes app, some are in boxes, and some I never saved.
Curious how you guys handle this.
Do you actually track your build spending with a spreadsheet/app, or do you just avoid looking at the total?
Blu_yello_husky@reddit
No
Whysoblunted@reddit
For the past almost 20 years, every project I start gets its own black moleskine notebook in the glovebox or with manuals. I record all work done and keep most papework with it. If I sell the project, the new owner gets the notebook with the recipts in it.
It's less about keeping track of cost, and more about keeping information consolidated.
OldAssumption5324@reddit
i found this website that helps with tracking everything n stuff for my 04 crv turbo build its called: https://mmodstack.vercel.app/
Double-hokuto@reddit
That’s so sick. What an artifact.
passwordistaco388@reddit
I did, right up until i hit the end of the budget… then kept running into those “while i have the engine out of the car i might as well do this and that” (clutch and flywheel were toast, and did rear main seal, and then found a cam lobe that had been scratched so i might as well put some upgraded ones in) And here we are $7k into a $2k project car…
passwordistaco388@reddit
Oh and i did the upgraded turbo, catch can, motor mounts. Finally up and running and into the tuning process now, but dang it stung when i lost my job just outside of the return window for a bunch of the upgrades

Tobias---Funke@reddit
No because it doesn’t help.
kykid87@reddit
Absolutely NOT. Same with my bikes, or any hobby. Sucks the joy right out of it.
panelbeater352@reddit
thewheelsgoround@reddit
Down to the penny, yes.
That doesn’t mean that financial cost will steer the project, but I never walk into a project blindly without having an idea of its costs.
stomperxj@reddit
Yes. Every project gets a spreadsheet minimum
AMG_Longhorn@reddit
That’s against the rules 😬
mikejonezzzzzz@reddit
For 2 of my cars, I have a notes page for everything I’ve bought and the price. Wish I had put the date also, but didn’t. 2003 Cobra and a 2000 Lightning.
Cooper66_hockey@reddit
‘96 SVT Cobra bought in August of ‘22 bone stock with a head unit and rims for 12,500 first summer I spent 5 grand on parts alone… stifflers full subframe, jacking rails and web brace, flowmaster outlaw catback, SCT tuner and 3:73 rear gears, koni double adjustable rear struts and single adjustable front struts with eibach sport line lowering springs, JLT fender well cold air intake. Last summer the release bearing came out in 6 pieces lmao I wish I knew how to rebuild transmissions cuz getting the parts across the border while the orange man put his tariffs on anything crossing the border was still cheaper than the rebuild itself…. There’s more parts I’m forgetting too but I’m sure I’ve spent more on the car in parts and labour for my tune and trans rebuild
Johnboy70512@reddit
Trying but it’s tough! Lol I had paperwork and saving receipts etc
dFagnell@reddit
I did in the start, but now I'm more than 20k deep in my 2.5k car and I've lost count. I summarized my orders from one site, it's around 10k just there. Then add engine, gearbox, standalone, paint and so on. But it's fun.
idostuffwithcar@reddit
After I speced my engine build and the total passed $8,000, I stopped counting. Only hurt feelings over there.
TheEstablishment7@reddit
Yeah, no. No way.
I do track my overall spending on auto stuff a monthly basis, and I keep the tab below what it would cost for other hobbies I'm potentially interested in.
thickanvil69@reddit
I did, I got the list of all the parts I got at the speed shop, it was just sonething for me to laugh at with my buddy's. I left it in my glove box and my girlfriend found it. Let's just say she was not happy about the frequency we went on dates and the Ramen I bought for dinner
Sniper22106@reddit

biggleUno@reddit
Every penny
Ragefear@reddit
You shut your mouth, and if your wife asks, it's less than you paid for the car
What is wrong with you???!
jaqattack02@reddit
No, definitely not. It's something I do for fun, not as an investment. Putting a dollar value on the parts and stuff would just be upsetting.
shadow247@reddit
I have a rough idea, but I would have spent it on something else, so it doesnt really matter.
JellaFella01@reddit
I did it for one thing, my project bike and it just reminds me of how stupid it is to spend more than a new bike costs on a 20 year old bike.
toolix@reddit
As for a dollar value on the time spent, I think it would make more sense to just walk around looking for pennies on the street.
invol713@reddit
This. To track it would lead to madness.
shadow247@reddit
Naw man. Shit no. I do believe you get your ass kicked for saying something like that.
Doxy8404@reddit
You see, the longer it sits not running, the less I spend on it monthly. Big brain move.

Fuck no.

Nope. Just bought a 1967 International truck and the thought of replacing the tires haunts me

I eyeball it to have a ballpark. I have a handful of project cars so if I kept track of it all I’d have to take those secrets to my grave.
CardiologistSalt4114@reddit
Ohhhhh hoh hoooo nooooooooooooo. Never track the spend. I decided to roughly calculate what I’d spent on my truck one day. Mmm mmm never again
myfishprofile@reddit
Absolutely not 🤣
moonlite_equilibrium@reddit
Not cars (anymore) but motorcycles
If i needed to on my baby i could ballpark a number but i dont think about it.
My other bike (hardtail chopper floor up build) i can name every dollar in parts cause it hasnt proven itself to be fun yet lmao
Careflwhatyouwish4@reddit
Fuuuuck no. That might lead to reasonable decisions and THAT could lead to selling the car. What are you, nuckin futz??!

Mr_Diesel13@reddit
Absolutely not.
My wife likes to try though 😂
04SHADOWRIDER@reddit
I keep track how much i tell my wife I've spent
Fit-Presentation-778@reddit
LOL!!! No hahah! Whenever people ask "What's your budget" when I ask a question, I have no idea what to say.
"My budget is what it takes to get it complete and make me happy"?
PhysicsAndFinance85@reddit
I keep track of mine in spreadsheets, mostly because I keep all of the part numbers and specs on everything. I have every receipt. I don't really monitor how much is spent, but it's there if I feel the need.
I think my wife has a ballpark idea of what I spend between the cars, motorcycles, guns, and miscellaneous crap. But she doesn't really know. Last time she brought it up in an argument several years ago she said "I know you spend enough on your hobbies to buy me a new car every year!" To which I replied "Do you need a new car? When was the last time you had a job?" She never drives a car more than 5 years old, hasn't worked in over a decade, and hasn't brought it up since.
If your bills are paid, your retirement is funded, you have an emergency fund, and you're not in debt... enjoy your hobbies! Seriously. Investing in your mental health is a great thing. Don't sweat it.

Sleepyasf1400@reddit
Currently I got a journal dedicated to what I did to it on what day, all + & - comments, and money spent.
smithwesson586@reddit
I log the initial car price then every part bought. I don't track my time because it's a hobby, but I want to know how much I have in something
Abject-Week-7673@reddit
I have a binder with records for my 944. Half for me to keep track of what’s been done and the other half incase I decide to sell it.
Think I’m somewhere around $1500 in parts and have been doing the repairs myself.
Goldeneagle41@reddit
No! It’s called plausible deniability!
moontanmountain@reddit
Yeah so far I have. I enjoy finding cost effective ways to do things and I'm comfortable knowing this isn't going to make me any money, and will cost more than double what it's worth.
But hey, we do it for the love right
Sir_J15@reddit
Currently at the $50k mark. Still have about $20k more to spend before it’s done. This is 100% parts and a lot of them at cost not retail. Labor I never calculated.
Ambivadox@reddit
"done"
What is that?
Sir_J15@reddit
It’s a purpose built road course track car. Has a specific build list.
9inchjames@reddit
I only note the money I've saved. Like if I found new seats for 1/2 price or something. Or "this would have cost xxx to pay someone else to do"
S_t_r_e_t_c_h_8_4@reddit
Don't need thar stress!
AhBuckleThis@reddit
I did and stopped about 15 years ago. I still have a binder with most of the receipts though. I did this just in case Grundy didn’t want to insure my car for the stated amount I was asking. I recently increased the value and they just wanted pictures. I have slightly more into than its insured for.
JCDU@reddit
I don't need that sort of negativity in my life.
Also - it's not about the money, it's a hobby not a business.
Top_Future9287@reddit
No..
for two reasons. If I ever sell it I’ll never recover the money and or because you only live once might as well buy whatever you want lol
Ambivadox@reddit
I did.
Then I stopped because having 5k into a 2k truck was enough. I'm not going to have 10k into a 2k truck. No matter what I do to it I'll only ever have 5k into that 2k truck.

We have an agreement to not compare hobby costs. My cars vs the spouse's running. Running is a surprisingly expensive hobby once you get into ultra running.
Kennylobster8899@reddit
As long as you only do engine/drivetrain mods, not cosmetic mods she will never know! Do a sleeper build! $8000 turbo kit? No biggie. $2000 rims? Big problem
Mediocre_Training453@reddit
I have a notepad in a binder with receipts and all the math plus a list of modifications and repaired shit like wires and harnesses. I am also planing on giving it to the kid someday so I guess it's situational.

Scrap-heap_818@reddit
Keep a Pokémon card folder filled with your receipts instead of cards. It’s what I do.

Yes, using a spreadsheet. Helps me visualize my dumb projects vs fun projects. Helped me to understand I get more value and fun from cheap old American cars vs euro tuners

TechnicianGlobal4312@reddit
yes, cause I got tired of car guy approximations of "what really adds up". so i have a paper folder to drop receipts in, and a desktop folder to drop online invoices in. adding it to the excel spreadsheet takes consistency, maybe 90% of it has been accounted for, leaving me with - an approximation of what really adds up.
~14,000 documented dollars into an autocross 63' Ranchero, and it hasn't run yet!

Zyncon@reddit
It's getting there. Slant 6 and 904 were dropped out earlier this week. It's about time for wiring and 340 swap.
Everything needed to get it back and "finished" has been delivered. Pretty exciting.
RYDSLO@reddit
Yup, I've not done it for any of my past builds, but keeping track of the current one because Im actually trying to stick to a budget for the first time lol. So far im pretty well on track. I add up everything I spend on my phone in a note. Marketplace parts, online orders, everything except gas and registration fees. Just over 5k including the cost of the truck for a pretty well sorted 92 c1500 RCSB, now about 8500 after buying all the airride stuff and having a bunch of stuff powder coated. Aiming for being bagged under 10k.

LoudMouse327@reddit
Some yes, some no. My old Biscayne, good lord no. My '29 Ford roadster, yes, and I'm in the ballpark of $14,000 and it doesn't even look like a car. By the time it's done I'll probably have $30-40k into it. So, basically exactly what it will be worth. Now, if you count all the parts I've bought and then decided not to use .... we don't need to talk about that.
Double-hokuto@reddit
I think 30-50k is more realistic for a built car than most people realize, even if you get the original for 5-10k
LoudMouse327@reddit
Yea I'd say thats relatively average. If you're paying someone else to build it, you can expect to about double that. A lot of people also don't realize that if you do pay someone 100k to build you a car that would cost 50k to do yourself, it may still end up being a 25k car when the day is done.
SueKam@reddit
google sheet on my phone, each car has it's own tab, I use it to track amount spent on parts, approximate hours spent on each part, and tracking maintenance intervals. Basicaly whenever I do anything to the car that isn't driving it or washing it, I make an entry in the sheet to track how much I've spent on it.

Double-hokuto@reddit
I track literally everything I put into my cars, starting with the shitty daily that got me deeper into car work a couple years ago. One spreadsheet with a tab per project, and a tab for the home shop.
I knew when moving from my previous hobby to this one I had to have some accountability because it’s so much more expensive. I really don’t cheat — I tracked gas and lodging on the trips to pick up my last daily and my two project cars. The shop spreadsheet includes consumables too, every can of brake clean and box of nitrile gloves since I started.
I have a little system for highlighting exceptional purchases I’d make again and shitty/mistake purchases that never made it onto the car, or were removed immediately. It helps me learn over time.
This is how I can be more realistic with my project car budget. It’s kinda crazy once I really looked at it — a restomod and engine swap costs a lot, even if you’re doing all the work yourself. Especially the first time.
Examples of some of the little things I’ve learned:
The biggest thing I’ve learned is the first time you do something you’re gonna spend a dumb amount of money on it. The second and third time you save. And that’s ok — this is a hobby where I’m basically taking myself to school every weekend and school costs money, the enjoyment is the journey and the skills I build along the way.
AustinDuprey@reddit
Ironically I track spending on my daily. Excel spreadsheets for parts and services, the whole nine yards. Then my project car, not a care in the world. Here or there idc, I'll spend money twice if I mess it up the first time. It's a learning process for me.

I track how much the bigger things cost and will usually ball park a budget/spending in my brain. Ngl tho the main purpose of doing that is to motivate me to actually finish the project. cpl_calamari@reddit
What??! I'd call or email or something. That's blasphemous.
Out of all of my time ordering from them, probably 70-100 orders, I've only not gotten a magnet twice. Sometimes I'll get one per box even if it's the same order.

musubk@reddit
I've had cars that I've tracked every penny (mostly for youtube video interest), cars that I keep a general idea of an estimate, and cars that I just buy what I need/can afford without tracking anything.
But I never count tools as part of a project car cost, unless it's some specialty tool that will only be used for that car. Tools are an investment into future repairs and projects.

There’s what it really cost.
There’s what you’re willing to admit to yourself that it cost.
Then there’s the “wife price.”
Uh, she knows what it really cost, but she’s protecting you! 🙊
m1j2p3@reddit
lol that’s a quick way to start feeling bad about almost any hobby.
maxmighty88@reddit
I figured out the total once. I won't do it again
Pkock@reddit
I don't want to know, and on the rare occasion I sell one, it doesn't really matter to that guy either. It's worth what it's worth, the money put into it is largely irrelevant.
wellwaffled@reddit
Nothing good can come of that
julienjj@reddit
skooliekrindy@reddit
Negatory ghost rider.
dumbname0192837465@reddit
nah man, thats a recipe for heartbreak
Big-Energy-3363@reddit
Nope. I can tell you I have 25k into a 363” twin turbo, 6K in a 6r80 trans and 15k into a rolling , plumbed and painted 31 Ford aftermarket chassis. I figured 60k all in for a 845 hp all steel Tudor sedan. And that is with epoxy primer for final finish!!! I only save the big receipts
jdimmell@reddit
No but if I point to a part, I can tell you the price I paid 😉
kayra551@reddit
I got a Google Spreadsheet for each and every project for every cent spent, even consumables. It gets depressing but i think it is necessary to not get carried away and dig the hole too deep
basicKitsch@reddit
I track each purchase, as in I'm usually hunting for the best value / option for that thing as I'm doing it. Often tracking overtime on forums and other marketplaces because I rarely buy things new. After that, I don't even care
CabernetSauvignon@reddit
parts and consumables are tracked meticulously per car as a line on a spreadsheet - no invoices actively kept although i could likely compile it from my emails if required.
tools are not since i expect a lifetime of service from most of them
pgercak@reddit
I stopped counting on my Camaro around 2.5 years ago. Ive owned the car for about 3 years, Lmao.
Plane_Geologist8073@reddit
It depends on if my motivation behind the project is to save money or just for fun. I was doing salvage rebuilds for dailys for my family and I, I paid close attention to my budget because it really had to make financial sense to keep doing it. Race car shit though, nah, I slip all the receipts in a Manila envelope and never add them up.
jayfactor@reddit
I got a spreadsheet lol
Whizzleteets@reddit
Nooooooo dear God no.
SexyWampa@reddit
Fuck no.
Dinglebutterball@reddit
Hell no. I learned a long time ago not to ask questions you don’t want answers to.
beermaker@reddit
I had a $20k budget & came in five grand under by the time I got it licensed like five years ago... There's still around $3k in the fund.
As far as keeping track, I've got a binder full of receipts and info on the upgraded parts and the outside labor I've used in case I want to sell it.
I don't document maintenance items or fuel.
UnbelievableDingo@reddit
I keep receipts and lists.
The cost isn't the main factor, getting proper replacement parts in the future for this Frankenstein's monster I've created is the issue.
coldblooded79@reddit
No, that would be depressing.
shiftycansnipe@reddit
Some keep spreadsheets, I don’t even wanna know. If I have the money at the time, I get the part. It’s just an amendment to the Whole, which as is said., is always greater than the sum of its parts
Roverjosh@reddit
God no! I don’t want to know what I’m dumping into my project that I will never recoupe when I sell it… 😝
AntC_808@reddit
No. Definitely no.
modestmandrakeman@reddit
No (I’m too scared)
PHANTOM666EVIL@reddit
Nope, I just budget a little money each month for the car. I don’t count because it might demotivate me LOL 😂
illbeyourdrunkle@reddit
I keep track of what I told my wife it cost. Not the actual cost.
1320Fastback@reddit
Do. Not. Do. That.
CocoonNapper@reddit
Absolutely - but then you lie to yourself to make it all good.
CaptainSloth269@reddit
Hahahaha no
Disappearing_Arts@reddit
I did out of curiosity, I’ve spent $7k getting my 86 running. Only another idk $10k to go till it’s finished….maybe
baconjerky@reddit
My notes on my projects are extremely extensive down to every dollar spent, part replaced, and issue addressed. I also keep notes of part numbers, modifications, ideas, etc. etc.
rhythim313@reddit
Oh I have a spreadsheet that will make you cry.
Ok-Square360@reddit
I try to keep a spreadsheet with a roundabout figure. Hard to keep track of every little thing, I don’t factor in random tools or most consumables, but I do keep track of my parts and any labor costs outside of my own
NoMoOmentumMan@reddit
I have printed nearly ever receipt and filed it in a binder. I haven't totaled it, but one could.
Ok_Steak2523@reddit
I tried, then gave up
wastegate84@reddit
No, I don’t need that kind of stress
Far_Kangaroo2550@reddit
That sounds like a bad idea.
Equivalent_Ice_1950@reddit
I track what I have left over to eek out an existence
GoonDawg666@reddit
I keep track of it in a spreadsheet, but it doesn’t stop me from spending less lol
OutlandishnessOk5549@reddit
Depends.
Fix and flip - yes, guess make sure you don't overcapitalise.
Passion project car - nope. It'll just make you cry.
Exact_Yogurtcloset26@reddit
I do, down to my $8.00 sensors and random FB part finds.
Aleutian_Solution@reddit
Yes, and I’m not a fan of the number
crap-with-feet@reddit
I kept every receipt for my last project in a folder. When I finished the project I got curious and added it all up. Big mistake. Glad I didn’t also track my time.

No way... if my wife found it she'd use the purchases from my other hobby to kill me... too risky
juwyro@reddit
I prefer my mental health to be positive.
jedigreg1984@reddit
Lol come on with this
I like my sanity. Individual item costs yes, total no
placebodyhere@reddit
Why would you do such a thing? That will only lead to depression and heartbreak!
Poil336@reddit
Absolutely not. Even ball-parking it hurts and I know that's a low estimate
VG30ET@reddit
Unfortunately yes
sorestgore@reddit
Hell no! I'd never buy any parts if I did
ZombiePope@reddit
You can't make me.
illigal@reddit
Oh hell no.
In fact I do the opposite: pretend the only costs were the original purchase price and BIG part purchases (like a whole trans - but not the hoses, filters, gaskets, fluids required to install it) and then subtract the current value of the nicest version of my car currently on the internet.
I’m happy to say my NA Miata is up over $30K in total value using this math.
Wonderful_Setting_29@reddit
Thats just a whole lot of negativity that we dont even need to look into. "Look over there! Racecar!"
zdhonda93@reddit
I personally don't but my wife sure does.
psychoholic@reddit
Oh hellllllll no. I don't even want to think about it most of the time much less have a record of it to remind me how much more money than time I've spent on a car that was running 5 years ago before I started "improving" things.
Dude_Love_1974@reddit
Seethesvt@reddit
I don't pay attention. I don't wanna know.
Eclipse423@reddit
I keep a list of almost all of the parts I buy and have yet to buy and how much they cost. It was mostly to keep track of all the parts I need but I can also calculate how much I spent and how much I need to spend.
Individual_Put2261@reddit
God no
lokigottaeat@reddit
Oh god no
_clever_reference_@reddit
Yes but only parts that are actually installed on the car for tracking purposes. Tools, materials, etc I don't keep track of.
LonelyDriver@reddit
No I don't, it's my hobby so I'm going to spend my money on it.
rudbri93@reddit
I dont really bother that much. Ill have a budget for certain projects, but overall cost isnt super important to me.
