1990’s DFW bands

I think it’s often overlooked how great our music scene was 30 years ago.
Toadies, Tripping Daisy, UFOFU, the Funland Band, Hagfish, Pantera, the Nixons, Old 97’s, Deathray Davies, Slow Roosevelt, etc. So many great local bands and shows back then.
We can also claim Stevie Ray Vaughn (died in 1990), Erykah Badu, Meat Loaf, Norah Jones, Jessica Simpson, Post Malone, and unfortunately Vanilla Ice.
Not too shabby.

Radish/Ben Kweller
side note: The actor most known for playing McLovin in Superbad (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) is the current bass player for Ben Kweller
Rich_Helicopter_2128@reddit
I still listen to Restraining Bolt and it’s still great
JohnSolo22@reddit (OP)
Definitely forgot Ben & he deserves recognition.

Greenville?
meleant@reddit
Loved Radish and still love BK. He’s a musician I’ve been able to follow his trajectory/path since he was 15 years old.
KingOfNothing_85@reddit
Ben's dad was my primary care doc for 10 or 15 years between Greenville, Sulphur Springs, and Emory. Great guy.
Rich_Helicopter_2128@reddit
Also, after the timeline, but Ishi was always a fun show.
Rich_Helicopter_2128@reddit
this thread remind me of all the Edgefests I used to attend. I was a massive fan of the Nixons and saw them pretty much every time they were in town. Saw Hagfish, Spoon, Tripping Daisy, all for the first time at Edgefest.
One year i was in the parking lot and some gal dressed like a clown in this big ass fur coat walked by and i made a shitty comment on tbe way she was dressed. (leave me alone, i was 15). later on they introduce her on stage as an up and coming artist and she’s up there with her guitarist playing their new song.
that person was Gwen Stefani
Jericoholic_Ninja@reddit
I mean, the Nixons are from Tulsa.
Rich_Helicopter_2128@reddit
they were awesome., and were technically from OKC, but they really got their popularity here.
Jericoholic_Ninja@reddit
One of my first concerts at Cain’s Ballroom in early 90s!
DallasMotherFucker@reddit
Baboon was awesome too. I think they played with rubberbullet a few times. Rubberbullet’s founder/drummer, Earl Harvin, was a badass and played with a bunch of great jazz players and other acts in the studio and on tour, and had his own trio.
nugletman@reddit
I blame Baboon for my early on-set hearing loss and tinnitus. Fry Street Fair, late 90s or very early 2000s. Good times!!!
DallasMotherFucker@reddit
I was on mushrooms at a fry street fair with Baboon playing and Andrew the singer teed up a golf ball, got a club and drove the ball into the audience. I was like what the fuck! and then the ball stalled in the air and drifted down and I realized it was a foam practice ball.
milksasquatch@reddit
Yea, used to catch Earl Harvin Trio every chance that I got.

DARYL used to practice next to a band I was in in some practice space on 635. That was like 2005, so IMO they were a bit later than the others mentioned.

brobradh77@reddit
Are they considered a DFW band? They were from Wichita Falls?
fruityrootytooty@reddit
So easily.
Practicality_Issue@reddit
I mostly stayed in the Fort Worth scene. I knew or was one or two degrees of separation from knowing a lot of the band members. Some that I haven’t seen yet:
Brasco - lead singer lived next door for a few months and drove my girlfriend crazy because he parked his Camaro in front of our house.
Woodeye - always a good show. Kerry (sp?) who ran the Dog Star was lead singer.
There was a little jazz ensemble that played at the Black Dog on Sunday nights that was an awesome change of pace. I don’t know if they had a name.
Corn Mo - I don’t know how I haven’t seen that legend here yet.
The Necro-Tones I think were local - I remember seeing them at the Wreck Room back when we all went through that one summer we all listened to swing music…
thhpht@reddit
The Dog Star! That place was great! Does it still exist? Or did TCU gentrify it out of existence?
Practicality_Issue@reddit
I think it got gobbled up a long time ago, but Kerry (sp?) is still a part of the FW music scene.
PurpSSBM@reddit
How could you forget the butthole surfers!?!?
RC-5@reddit
Tommy played piano like a kid out in the rain Then he lost his leg in Dallas, he was dancin' with a train.
JohnSolo22@reddit (OP)
They were formed in San Antonio. I know dude, i thought they were Dallas for a long time.
Iocnar@reddit
Gibby went to Lake Highlands high school. So did St. Vincent.
GreedoInASpeedo@reddit
I used to get coffee at the same spot/time as Annie Clark. This was just when she started going by St. Vincent. She was still doing PolyphoySpree shows. Went to her first "St. Vincent" show I think Dan's Silverleaf in Denton if I remember correctly.
Also, because why not? My mom and dad are the Clifford and Sharon from the song Pepper by Butthole Surfers. What he says about them is random unless it's metaphorical or something.
PutTheDogsInTheTrunk@reddit
Clifford?
GreedoInASpeedo@reddit
Shit, okay so you had me question myself and so I looked the lyrics up. And to my surprise there is no Clifford and so I sent it to my mom and she said I got it wrong and my "Aunt" Tommy is mentioned. I don't know.
All I know is that's what Gibby said to my mom at a Butthole Surfers show. He was surprised to see her there and then told us the story, and it was gosh at least 20 years ago now. But yea think I got the part about my dad being in it wrong.
The_Erlenmeyer_Flask@reddit
it's wild that so many people didn't know his dad was Mister Peppermint.

I saw them at the Longhorn Ballroom in ‘86. Mr & Mrs Peppermint had a table and were surrounded by mohawked kids getting autographs.

cdhughesblues@reddit
Hell yeah, I was around for all that. Dread N Irie was a cool spot. I would add Dot Matrix, Strange Fruit Project and N’Dambi.
bebopgamer@reddit
Adam's Farm and Spot are two great bands from the mid-90s Deep Ellum rock scene.
Neither made it big but both had solud CDs, put on good live shows, and are still worth listening to. For a sense of Adam's Farm, check out the song 'Want In', and For Spot try 'Moon June Spoon', both available on Apple Music.
cdhughesblues@reddit
Adam’s Farm was great. Half the members of Centro-matic were in that band.
Continental_0p@reddit
Adam’s Farm was way underrated
bebopgamer@reddit
Fun fact, the singer, song writer, and leader of the band, Jeff Wittington, has been a leader at KERA/NPR for years
Continental_0p@reddit
Yes! He retired awhile back. I recall him doing a solo show at Dada one time when he was playing as Johnny Nobody that broadcast.com was streaming live and all of his between song banter was directed at a hypothetical person sitting alone in the Arctic circle listening online.
chick_beans@reddit
I still listen to Spot's st album frequently, love them!
bebopgamer@reddit
I saw them at Trees as the headline act for the 94/95 New Years Eve, "five bands for five bucks", good times. Another band that night was called doosu (I got a sticker and thought it was hilarious that it said n-soop upside down). Can't remember the others.
chick_beans@reddit
Lucky! Unfortunately I never saw them play live. Spot and Tripping Daisy were my favorite Texas bands as a teen. I used to have all the lyrics from I Am an Elastic Firecracker memorized
shipitholla@reddit
These are bit more late 90s/early 00s, and a bit more Denton than Dallas proper, but I was super into Centro-matic, Little Grizzly, and the Paper Chase. Still am, I guess.
JohnSolo22@reddit (OP)
I definitely dig Centro-Matic. Saw them in Denton multiple times too.Frontman, Will Johnson, was the drummer for 1 the bands I listed, the Funland Band.
darkhorse21980@reddit
And Funland featured Clark Vogeler on guitar, who's now with Toadies. It's all connected...
dubioususefulness@reddit
Clark is such a good guy. I'm glad to see his name out there.

We were probably at a lot of the same Centro shows lol. So many nights spent at RGRS (back when it was BYOB and I don’t even think had A/C) and Dan’s, pre-Silverleaf.

Bronco Bowl
So many fond memories there. Saw the dude light himself on fire at a Head PE show (I think Linkin Park opened that night.)
I learned what a contact high was.
Good times...
nugletman@reddit
The Bronco Bowl was such a great venue. Saw many shows there.
MWolman1981@reddit
I was at that show as well. I'd never heard of linkin park. The hed pe guitarist had a broken foot or something (he had to sit for the show).
10_96@reddit
I remember thinking that I really liked that first band so I bought their CD which was like 3 songs and really terrible production value. I wish I still had it to get autographed or something, but time marches on.
MWolman1981@reddit
I remember Linkin park and booing hed pe. Did I imagine that?
10_96@reddit
Nope. They were terrible live and made a big deal about POD being soft...something like that.
mattgoldey@reddit
The only time I ever went to Bronco Bowl was to see Material Issue somewhere around 1992ish. That place was so cool!
10_96@reddit
It was such a hole...but it was awesome too. It's hard to explain to those that never went.

not just bands but music venues. Starck club, Bronco Bowl, and Lizard Lounge come to the top of my head as top rate music venues. The music scene back then was just happening. Not to mention 4am closing times for nightclubs. Even 10 years ago with the rise of local stars such as St Vincent and Maceo Plex and a happening nightlife/after party scene.

Pimpadelic! Never saw them but I couldn’t keep my bf at the time away from them. Might’ve been all the nekkidness, for 18 year old boys I’m sure it was mind blowing. 😂

OHMEGA@reddit
They didn't bring out the best crowds.
Every single one of them were shitty shows and drained on us. We had to constantly kick out people doing out in the open drug use, people smashing bottles on the floor, fights, etc.
Lightsfantastic@reddit
Their drummer was the only decent guy I remember. He always made sure I was paid for doing their light shows. Now Hellafied Funk Crew… I was always chasing down their manager for money.
bananabreadready@reddit
lol I can imagine why! Jaegermeister comes to mind when I think of pimpadelic. I worked with this guy Marcus who was one of their roadies or whatever he was a hot mess
MephistoHamProducts@reddit
I saw them play at Grapevine Mills, back in the late 90s at GameWorks. Had no idea who they were at the time but it was a good show and was free!

OK, so this is the second time in a week I've seen pimpadelic mentioned out in the wild. Crazy shit lol. They had a line in a song that mentioned "a rat named kelly" which was about my friends older sister. Another friend dated the lead singer for a bit. Turns out the guy enjoyed, uhhhh, somewhat solo water sports. That's the most delicate way I can put it.

Plastic Tongue, Sak, Prisoner 416, Ethanol, Tek3

Ethynol was great! My sister went to school with those guys, and my friends used their EP for me to learn as a requirement to being in their band. My friends figured if I could play that I was good enough, nm the fact I was already playing Tool albums front to back for fun, haha.

From the intro sample (prison doors opening up to a realistic/not fictional voice “Open that goddamn gate” (he and his posse are “Lock Down G’s”) and opening track “Dreadlock Booyah” has a crazy kind of Texas old west feel, but modern/killer beat.

Agreed although by 1990 they weren't really local anymore. At least I think. Maybe. But perpetually on world tour and stuff like that. Very close though. Big local in 88 maybe 89. Still wore it on their sleeves though. Their next album prominently featured songs about Dallas.

Eddie Brickell has had three other bands over the years that don't use her name. Heavy Circle, the Gaddabouts and Heavy Makeup. That info is for people who wonder why she hasn't come out with much over the past 30 years.

Mojo Nixon and Rev Horton Heat were in regular rotation at Theatre Gallery.

Nowadays excellent bands in Dallas have to audition for and then pay for subscriptions for the mere “opportunity” to street perform. In my opinion that ain’t progress.

The comedy scene was decent as well. I did promotional stuff for Actors Without a Stage, who later became Dead Comix Society, then some of their members split off and formed Section 8 Comedy. Dave Little was part of the last one, who’s a hilarious comedian on his own. Three other guys from the comedy troupes (Josh Martin, Mike McFarland, Chris Rager) now make a living as anime voice actors.
big_ringer@reddit
DFW still has good music.
Leon Bridges, anyone?
trimondo_blondomina@reddit
KXT 91.7 and KTCU 88.7 have introduced me to hundreds of fantastic bands. Some of which I’d put right next to my all time favorites. Leon Bridges has came a long way since KXT put him in regular rotation. Hard to believe that was about ten years ago.
Fabulous_Hand2314@reddit
and 88.1 but the signal is so weak 😞
trimondo_blondomina@reddit
I’m very dissatisfied with 88.1’s local representation. One local song from one local band at 9:00 PM is pretty underwhelming when you consider KXT and KTCU put a local band in rotation every hour and have dedicated local blocks at noon every day and KXT’s local hour at 7:00 PM Thursdays. What’s worse is that 88.1 has Mark Schectman, formerly of the Edge, the Ticket, and 103.7, as their concert calendar guy. Mark’s one of the most knowledgeable people on the local indie scene and 88.1 just wastes him. He’s got a great Sunday night show on 128db internet radio, but I really hoped 88.1 would just get Mark a show.
PutTheDogsInTheTrunk@reddit
Thanks for the skinny on Mark's radio show!

Frosty was basically the reason I got into drumming.
Cps12345@reddit
So, this one time, I’m on this boat in the middle of Lake. Travis at a work function that a client sponsored. There was a stage inside with a prominent Austin artist playing. The corporate bigwig knew I was a musician and insisted I get up and play a tune, despite my vigorous protests. I knew I was in over my head, but figured I could fumble through one tune. The artist and I traded glances as he handed over his guitar, us both smiling slightly and mutually acknowledging that we were in a bit of a pickle, both desperately hoping I wouldn’t screw the pooch. A strap on the guitar, step up to the mic, turned to lock eyes with the drummer to count off the song, and it fully hits me that I’m staring at Frosty. Almost forgot how to count for a second. Somehow, I was so wrapped up, enjoying the main artist and the free booze, it never even dawned on me who it’s, or that was even a remote possibility. He was very gracious, was an absolute beast, and was one of my favorite drummers.

The Tales from the Edge series are a great sampler of DFW’s musical history. The Edge itself was great for a few years in the 90’s. It’s unthinkable today to have a commercial FM station give locals a chance in regular rotation like the Edge did.
KXT 91.7, KTCU 88.7, and parts of KNON 89.3 do a fantastic job of representing our local scene. None, sadly, have the clout the Edge had, though.
