Just got my CDL in Oregon with tanker and triple double endorsement (gonna get my hazmat soon) was wondering which companies hire new cdl that will make me come home weekly and also local if possible, preferably flatbed but don’t mind dryvan. Any help?

XPO is hiring new CDL drivers in Portland I was trained over a month and started at $31 then got to top pay after 2 years to $39 an hr. Definitely apply we take newer drivers too.

I applied in while I was in school and got a denial email then a week before graduation I got a call from a recruiter wanting to setup an interview for next week i explained my situation and everything. I think what helped me is I had a license since I was 16 with with clean record and drove for Amazon XL for 2 years box trucks. At my terminal we have CDL A drivers use the box trucks since they require hazmat anyway and often have some tight delivery locations that are Box truck only.

From the company standpoint, they are self-insured so they have their own insurance so they can hire newer drivers and they do hire newer drivers. They will even train their own forklift drivers to become drivers. There’s a big truck right now. Only 3% of the US population is truck drivers and About 54% of U.S. truck drivers are age 45 or older.

If you go states like Oregon there is practically no truck drivers here compared to states like Florida or Georgia. We also don’t really have a lot of young people here and LTL especially food service requires a lot of younger people. We work the dock a lot so they really want you to be able to do everything or at least be willing to learn and do it. I feel like I was built for LTL industry, and I love my job. If I would’ve gone, OTR would JB Hunt my first year I probably would’ve gotten very discouraged with trucking since I’ve tried line haul quite a bit now and it’s not my favorite aspect of trucking I enjoy more local P&D delivery but sometimes Line haul can be nice. You just flip on a podcast or listen to a book. You definitely make more money doing Line haul from my experience but everyone wants to do it unless the terminal is under 200 miles or less.

While having your hazmat already won't hurt your changes, it isn't necessarily something I would highly suggest rushing to get. You will probably need experience to get a job that uses it and most companies that require it would pay for it and give you time to get it. I personally waited to get it till I had my experience and it was still a waste of money for me as my company would have paid for it if I had waited. I don't know if they have local but you could check out central Oregon trucking company. I heard good things from their drivers.

congrats man, in OR i’d ask around smaller local outfits first, those are the ones that’ll actually get you home weekly. flatbed it’s often regional runs, so home weekends at best. tanker with hazmat might get you better local work. finding decent starter gigs now is rough though
