The wooden slats have probably sagged.
If you where getting water penetrating the roof then it might have caused the wooden slats to sag more. But any roofer worth their salt would have seen the slats when replacing the tiles and the sag and if it was an issue, would have told you.
As it is, I don't think it's really an issue, only way you will be able to tell is when it rains or if you crawn into the loft space and take a look.
A rafter is the main structural member that runs vertically (from the viewers perspective), it going to be about 8 inches thick.
A slat on the other hand is an inch or two, it is designed to bridge across the rafters horizontally and depending on rafter spacing is expected to only support between 2-6 tiles.
And for completeness, a purlin is a horizontal structural member which bridges across underneath the rafters as a support for them, if the distance from the supporting wall to the ridge is too long.
Is it the rafters sagging though or have they just raised up the verge side way too far when repairing the end rafter and said "fuck it thatll do"?
Its quite clearly bodged, so the roofers that repaired it were obviously shit. Wouldn't surprise me if its them that caused everything in the image
The ridge doesn’t go up, It is the rafter sagging.
That facia on the end is probably worse than useless too.
the fact that it looks like it’s sagging at the bottom, and that bottom is exactly where the downpipe is, leads me to believe that water has been getting in there and rotted out the bottom of that rafter.
Getting slates off whole is pain, but I’d put money on the foot of that rafter needing replacing.
If the rest of the job is bad then the odds are against them having installed a high quality membrane under the slates, properly lapped to prevent rain ingress, so the gaps caused by the uneven roof will allow in water and the job will get bigger the longer it’s left
This is not the slats. That would mean the courses of slate sag down the face of the roof. This is a problem with sagging or more likely rotten rafters.
Well personally I don't think you're roof was in great shape to start with, the repairs reflect what state it was in to Star with. As long as it's doing it's job you should be ok but plan on getting a quote. I'm surprised the roofer that did the repairs didn't say it was fucked or ok🤔
Funnily enough I've seen this plenty of times over the years and there's no chance this is GenAI. This same picture was posted on Reddit 10 years ago, for example:

I’ve been using this since before 2020! Probably good old fashioned MS Paint 😂
if you were to ask a roofer for a quote
you would see hear their wallet squeak with glee
they would rub their chin taking a sharp drawn breath their teeth before tuttung a few times.
at this point your bank Balance will cry
Looks like the slates are kicked up from the barge board being too high and somebody's tried fitting a plastic dry verge unit which isn't sitting correctly. Should be fine but aesthetically is not pleasing at all. Contrary to what people are saying in here the laths have not snapped and the rafters have not collapsed.

I alight from roof to roof on moonless nights, making minor alterations to rafter hypotheneuses and other non essential modifications.

I'm sure I'll get people laughing at me because people don't value or understand the intrinsic value of wildlife, but check your roof space for bats with the tiles raised up like that before you get it fixed. Pips are tiny and can get into tiny gaps. We've got bats in our roof from a single raised tile. Love watching the little guys
Your roof is not good.
The fact you say you've "had work done" makes it even worse.
It looks like a slap dash job to whatever they were doing. Or the wood slats under the tiles have had enough. Some of them might have snapped, or if there has been a leak, they might just be to wet or rotting to hold the weight.
You need to get someone out as soon as you can to check this, or enquire with the company that did the work for you to come out and look at it.
Also, the tiles are on the edge of your roof which is more of a problem. They could slip off causing other damage, and they'll be more prone to getting blown off by the wind.
If you have access to the roof through a loft or hatch inside the house, I'd go and have a look from the inside and see if you can see any obvious problems.
This is not a problem of rotting slats. If the slats were rotten there would be sagging between each set of rafters, and the end would be flat (as it has brickwork under it). The slates would also be slipping course by course diwn the face of the roof. This is a problem of shitty roofers stripping back some of the end slate to do some work, adding bargeboard (piece of wood that goes up the gable end) or plastic trim, setting it way too high, then re laying the slate badly and on top of the way too high bargeboard causing this issue.
Source: actual professional slate roofer.
It's quite common for a roof to look like it sags more towards the gable as the last rafter will be supported on the brickwork and is much less likely to sag over the years. However that repair is not good. Slates should lay flat, the wind could easily cause these to lift, slates are generally very brittle and snap easily at the top where they're nailed down. Obviously without seeing it stripped it's hard to say, but I'd imagine the batten could have done with some remedial repairs and possibly a rafter or two could have done with being either replaced or had a new one put next to it to try and remove the worst of the sag.
Only time a slate is brittle is if its been laid incorrectly (as here) or if its from brazil. Slate is a very durable roofing material as shown by the hundreds of years old roofs we see around the world.
Source: professional slate roofer who specialises in slate.
Unlike others, I don't think it is sagging... but I am no expert.
It looks like the slate at the bottom is too wide and is resting on the edge, which is causing the 7 slats above it to be angled.
I don't think you would have an issue with water ingress usually, but if it's windy, I'm sure you will get some.
If it's very windy, you are more likely to lose these slates. Makes me wonder if the tiler did this on purpose to guarantee work in the near future.
The slate is not too wide. As an actual roofing contractor i can correct this mistake. They likely stripped the slate from up the side. Some broke while stripping which is why they have replaced a few slates. They have most likely added bargeboard, which is the piece of wood that goes up the face of the gable end. The bargeboard is set too high, which is causing the slates to sit way too high, and causing the strange look you see here. They wont blow off in the wind, but it looks like shit and is certainly wrong.
Post this in r/roofing and you might get replies from actual roofers rather than people that know nothing about roofing. Some of these replies are laughable.
If all those new slates were gaping holes before, it may have got so wet it's bent but not rotted. What did the roofer say? Can you see it from inside?
It’s not fucked. It’s fine. All old terrace houses were built with the tiles to taper up at the end so the water is driven towards the centre of the roof instead of down the external wall where it would ingress to cause damp. The slates are a bit unlevel, but that’s common with a terrace with real slates that’s 100+ years old
Theres only 2 area where it looks worrisome, 2 individual slates that is.
The main issue is they have used very large slates, they do this as its much faster and easier to complete the roof.
Roofer here, this is 90% down to your rafters dropping. Could be as simple as pushing them up from your loft space with a nail gun and re pinning them.
Unfortunately the most common cause of this is moisture rotting the top of your joists which means they unlikely can’t just be re pinned(they won’t hold and just drop after firing the nails in)
Do you have loft access? If so get up there with a torch and inspect all the big diagonal timbers where they meet at the top for signs of rot(flakey bits of wood)
Feel free to message me any questions I’ll do my best to help with possible solutions
TBH, at first viewing, it looks like you've trapped 3 koala under your roof line. Other than that, roof is a bit wonky, I'd get someone to check it out.
Looks like they’ve fitted a dry verge system and done a piss poor job of it, probably too lazy to cut down the barge board to let it sit flat and knocked the slates back on thinking it’ll be fine. I’d have them back to do the job correctly or find a legit competent roofer to fit it correctly.
I would love to see a "before" picture, because that looks bad. Missing tiles weren't the only issue because it's sagging. Maybe water ingress has caused other issues.
If it was, you'd need a master craftsman whose certified for 1400s era building techniques to come by and fix that with the same type of materials.
By the way Tom is only available on November 16th-19th. 2029. And he charges 90k.
Permit applications cost extra.
All depends what you asked the contractor to do. If it was just replacing a few slates, its the best you can hope for. Itll probably hold up for a while as long as the felt underneath is sound. But ideally you probably need to strip, straighten the trusses, re felt and lath.
