Company refusing to replace steers

I just needed to come on here to get everyone’s opinion on whether or not these steer tires need to be replaced. I have 2 violations from a little over a year ago when I first started driving, and I’ve been trying to steer clear of DOT violations since. I’ve brought this up to my company twice about needing these to be replaced, and both times they just give me the key back and never replace them. What’s the general consensus & should I keep pressing?

After getting your tread gage. If you are still unhappy pull into a weight station and see what CHP thinks. I wouldn't expect much I drove a fuel tanker without reflective tape on the side and past through weight station with nothing.

Hard to tell bc you didn't take the photos at a good angle. You gotta be level with the tread not way up above.
Touching the hair on the penny is 2/32, covering the hair/top of forehead is 4/32.
So for steers if it looks like the first photo when level then it's borderline, if it looks like the second when level it's clearly too low.

Also go get a tire tread gauge, they cost less than $5 on Amazon and should be under $10 at a truck stop.
MITCHATRILLION@reddit
every company just has drawers full of them
Nero-Danteson@reddit
Walmart has them for like 3 bucks

I wouldnt change those unless they were cupped out. Theres still lots of tread left.

Use a tread depth tool not a penny

You do realize a coin is not a death gauge right

Roll through a weigh station and have DOT call your company and tell them.

Refuse to drive and see what they say. You’re the captain of the ship and you determine what you feel safe driving.
Remote-Climate-135@reddit
If its above 4/32 then its safe to drive, if you will keep telling me that you refuse to drive while I checked your problems and made sure that you actually safe without future OOS and keep giving a me a headache with "Im not gonna drive it". If that will be overpriced the road, I will replace the tires, no problem, but then I'll replace you. Because you are not the captain and this ship is not yours, and the best you can do is your PTI and make sure that you are legal
Wolf24h@reddit
Sounds like quite a tough guy for someone who's skimping on steers
Remote-Climate-135@reddit
Is not about saving money, if tires has been checked and confirmed that they are DOT legal (not 5-6/32 but ~8/32) why them need to be changed? specially when summer is on the way. Its about bosses who doesn't drive, late for deliveries, poor communication and ton of different problems.
Dieselmechanic1900@reddit
They look fine but as others have said buy an actual tread gauge and at the end of the day you can always refuse to drive it it is your license not theirs
First_Race7734@reddit
And they’re wearing pretty evenly, they’re going to want you to run those to the death
Motor_Trick_9376@reddit
In today’s day, no one is going to waist money. As expensive as things are.
Motor_Trick_9376@reddit
What’s is the depth??? The guys R right 4/32 is the legal for D.O.T
Hungry-Ad3652@reddit
Steer legal limit is 4/32. The wear bars are also 4/32, until it hits that your legal
Captain_Wag@reddit
Put the penny down and buy a tread depth meter. It's like 10-15 bucks. That's what the mechanic used. If you use a tread depth meter and take a picture of the reading no one can deny you new tires.
Remote-Climate-135@reddit
Imo this is the only right answer in here
Comfortable-Menu2099@reddit
Take it to the tire shop your company uses and ask them to say there was a nail in it and they refused to patch an illegal tire. Or just drive over a nail go to the shop and pull the nail now your tire is flat and you don't have a choice. Or you can just unscrew the valve a little if you don't want to deal with nails.
Remote-Climate-135@reddit
Wow, so much brain in here we can see
Imasluttycat@reddit
Doesn't look too bad to me, no obvious dry rot or tread separation. If tread is above 4/32 then I'd run it but keep a close eye on them, Personally
doobersthetitan@reddit
Always thought it was a quarter
HaloNathaneal@reddit
If your worried about your tires tread depth, get an actual tread gauge to be sure, your company shop is likely using one of their own and finding your tires to be legal and not needing to be changed
dontdoxmebro2@reddit
They probably used an actual tire tread gauge which is what you should do.
nicerakk@reddit
Go buy a real tread depth gauge for 5 dollars and check the depth again.
