Been to the cinema today, loads of bag checks and police monitoring, what’s going on?

Went to the cinema in Hertford, England today and it felt completely different to 3 days ago. Loads of signs about a government security alert, bag checks on entry, and notices saying police were monitoring things live.
I’m guessing this might be linked to recent events in London and wider international tensions, but does anyone know if this level of security is in response to something specific, or if it’s more of a general precaution at the moment?

What us BEAM an acronym for?
OnlymyOP@reddit
I can't remember now but it's something very "Hertfordshire" and middle class . I prefer Banning Entry Against Murderers and now can't unthink it 😂

Banning Entry Against Murderers.
That's why they check the bags, to make sure there's no murders in them.
Not a scooby. I couldn't point to Hertford on a map, let alone tell you anything about it or its businesses. I just Googled "cinema hertford" and briefly looked at their website long enough to copy this text.

Huh.
I went to a gig in London last night and they didn't even pat me down on the way in...
oscarx-ray@reddit
I'm from Glasgow, they give you a knife on the way in to most of our venues. Guess they're a little more sensitive in Hertford.

It's to shut people up who are noisy with their popcorn.

They finally got sick of people sneaking in a pack of starburst and a can of Pepsi max
GlitchingGecko@reddit
I went on Monday and didn't even get my app checked to see if I had a ticket. Walked straight to my seat without a single person stopping me.
ActionBirbie@reddit
Why would anybody here, in a national subreddit know? Ask the cinema and monitor your local news. Maybe your local subreddit, even.
Current_Thing2244@reddit
Somebody probably placed a call saying an incident was planned. While there's a high chance it was a fake call, they take them seriously.

We have moved from a 3/5 terror level to a 4/5. Meaning more attacks are very likely, I don't necessarily know if that is why they would have bag checks but if someone had called in a threat the cinema wouldn't be continuing business, would go against Martyns Law I believe.
PorkAmbassador@reddit
The terrorism threat level is now at Severe, which might explain it.
Vic_Serotonin@reddit
Better start the hand wringing if we see a 'forinner' within 100 yards of a public space now I suppose. I'm off to facebook to pass it on hun.

It would definitely be a valid reason.

Some bloke years ago dressed in a Batman costume murdered a bunch of people in a cinema over in the states, back in the late 2000s.

That was in Aurora, Colorado

Cover up.
They just don’t want you smuggling sharing bags of Minstrels in from Asda.

Minstrels from Asda is still a step up from my usual sneaking in Poundland's finest
Miserable-Ad7835@reddit
Irony is it's probably a more effective deterrent on people taking their own food in than preventing terrorism.

There's been a massive police crackdown on people taking in their own pick and mix.

We have all worked with managers who relish any excuse they can think for an occasional little power trip.
The security threat level has been raised so you could view as them just being very responsible, though.
Not sure how police monitoring 'live' works, though. Perhaps the local plod have lunch in the MacDonalds opposite the cinema.

It's all for show, none of the minimum wage, zero hour contract security staff actually look properly in bags, but it ticks the right boxes.

Terror level has raised, plus also Martyn’s law has changed the way venues approach security and their responsibilities to the public.

It’s fair to say they’re most likely not tackling people sneaking bags of crisps in at the end of the day, but they’re doing their job and keeping you safe…
I went for a pint with my Dad recently and I was particularly struck by the seemingly unwarranted police presence in the vicinity… As ever, my Dad broke it down plain as day, clocked my worry and simply muttered “we live in a town full of scrotes and weirdos pal, be glad the police are knocking about”…

Our terror level has been raised we usually mean extra precautions in public areas and arenas

Elevated risk of a terror event due to recent events. If they receive intelligence about something they don't tell Joe Public they just raise the threat level and increase vigilance.
