A friend and I decided to only eat tinned food for a week.

So this is all I am eating this week.

“8 HOT DOGS”
Fragrant-Employer-60@reddit
Never in my life have I seen canned hot dogs lol
metompkin@reddit
Yes you have. They're just called vienna sausages.
appleanna99@reddit
They’re almost exclusively tinned/ in a jar in the UK
jsamuraij@reddit
Just when I had gotten used to this fact, you lot go and put rice pudding in a tin and undo all my therapy progress.
uberpickle@reddit
I’ve seen them in jars in Europe. Never brave enough to try them, though. Probably taste good, but I just couldn’t get past the looks.

I saw this wife had posted something on reddit maybe last year or something, where they have a whole month of "pantry clean out", where they try not to buy any groceries at all for a month, and just eat what they have, that inspired me to do something similar.
KneelAurmstrong@reddit
we call it pantry survivor 😮💨
k_dilluh@reddit
Honestly that sounds way cooler, like a competition.

Welcome to the low-income menu.
SillyLittleAngels@reddit
But the value menu is nonexistent. $5 or starve
RetroSwamp@reddit
You do know there are people out there with less than $5 in their accounts, right? Like I currently have less than 2 dollars in my account right now. All my bills are paid, but it's not like I have spare cash. Hell, I back on bean and rice and if it gets too bad, I will be going to the food bank.
SillyLittleAngels@reddit
Wow, I mean I know, but I can't afford to be that broke, bc I work too hard. I have to pay $5 a meal just to have food in my stomach to work. I've literally put myself in the hospital twice, for working too hard and not eating enough. And $5 every meal still sucks
RetroSwamp@reddit
It is crazy, and I am working, which blows my mind. After my bills, I have nothing. I live in a small town where the two main workplaces are a call center and a tire manufacturer. They keep everyone at my job part-time to avoid benefits, and can't afford to even move out of the town. Prices go up, but wages don't. Crazy times
SillyLittleAngels@reddit
I didn't get last year's taxes but they were "under review" 5 grand. I got both my taxes this year, omg, that shit went to unpaid bills immediately. Crying in poor
Serious_Mango5@reddit
My refund from last year is STILL under review as well! Fucking bullshit administration, just another example of the wreckage.
SillyLittleAngels@reddit
My condolences, but the fuck ass government will double it when you least expect it, and then it's gone. May the odds be ever in your favor
SerRaziel@reddit
Is this low income? You could get at least 2-3 lbs of rice for the price of one can of soup. Of course prices vary on location but... Rice, beans, frozen mixed vegetables are all around the same price here. The amount of sodium you're getting from canned soup is going to cost you in health problems in the long run.
RetroSwamp@reddit
You don't really get to pick from a food bank. My meals are mostly rice, beans and spices.
metompkin@reddit
Bewildered American blinking at canned hot dogs...
Ungodly_Box@reddit
No canned burger?
veglove@reddit
ok but there's decent canned food and then there is shitty canned food. Eating tinned mushy peas is intentionally choosing the latter.
SMTRodent@reddit
Tinned mushy peas are great with either mint sauce, malt vinegar, ketchap manis or tinned smoked oysters.
veglove@reddit
I don't see any of those items in the image though. Just playing along with OP'S challenge to only use the tinned items in the photo
DaVirus@reddit (OP)
Condensed milk and tinned fruit is a great low cost simple dessert
bongdropper@reddit
Also that rice pudding is gonna slap.
veglove@reddit
🤔 ok, I could kinda see that. Do you drain the liquid that the tinned fruit comes in first?
Condensed milk could work in your tea or coffee if you are foregoing fresh milk. It's common in Vietnam.
sadbeehoppy@reddit
try just condensed milk and hot water (boiling hot, not tap hot lol). makes a lovely sweet hot drink
DaVirus@reddit (OP)
Yeah, also love condensed milk in coffee
And yes, I drain the liquid. I get the ones in juice and not syrup on purpose so I can drink the juice and the dessert doesn't end up just tasting like sugar lol
HaggisHunter69@reddit
If you boil an unopened can of condensed milk for between two and three hours, you get a great caramel sauce out of it. make sure its cooled down first before opening though
veglove@reddit
Yes, I'm aware but didn't suggest it because I didn't see any other foods in this photo that looked like they would be improved with caramel sauce. Maybe the rice pudding. And perhaps ANYTHING would improve the flavor of mushy peas 😆
Jetstream-Sam@reddit
They're probably having it with the fruit cocktail. My dad said that was dessert at his house once a week, a third of a tin of mushy fruit with a spoonful or two of condensed milk
Although depending on how strict they are on the tins thing, it might go with porridge or something in the morning too
metompkin@reddit
Can you two check your blood pressure every hour for science?
nicofdarcyshire@reddit
That carbonara is foul!
Potatoes cut up a bit, fried a little, a bit of corned beef, and some of those peas - nice hash.
MomsSpagetee@reddit
Looks like parasites on the can 🤢
jsamuraij@reddit
LOL, it does. Ew. 🪱
DaVirus@reddit (OP)
Actually just had it for lunch and was OK.
Yes, hash is a plan for sure.

Occidentally20@reddit
I thought you wrote dessert for a minute and now I really want some tinned fruit salad in syrup.
Useful-Character-772@reddit
Where did you find Canned Hot Dogs!
failtuna@reddit
Make sure you drink plenty of water, lots of high salt foods there and you'll feel like shit if you don't hydrate to compensate.
Those tinned potatoes make excellent roast potatoes in the air fryer though, drain them, dry them, toss in flour (optional) and seasoning, 200°c air fryer 12-15 minutes.
veglove@reddit
I wonder if the potassium present in the fruits & vegetables would moderate this effect though. People focus on high sodium as being problematic, and it can be, but if you're also consuming high levels of potasium, my understanding is that you're fine. The cells in our body need both potassium and sodium to function, as long as they're in roughly equal proportions.
toomuchtv987@reddit
And salt is not generally too much of a problem for people who don’t already have high BP or kidney trouble.
Occidentally20@reddit
Do they?!
I'll have to try this - I live somewhere that makes it very difficult to get decent roast potatoes so if that works I'm definitely getting on it.
failtuna@reddit
Yeah they're excellent, if you have time do them in a good oven tray with some kind of fat/oil, takes a bit longer than air fryer though.
Occidentally20@reddit
I was particularly excited about the air fryer part - ovens here are few and far between, and fresh potatoes are almost all the wrong varieties for roasties.
failtuna@reddit
Air fryer is almost just as good, can still use oils just involves more cleanup.
Most important bit is drying them off if air frying though
SMTRodent@reddit
I do know that tinned potatoes are good sliced and fried, so the recipe given above sounds pretty promising to me.
jadbronson@reddit
Hey I appreciate this. It can totally be done as long as no one has a sensitivity to high sodium. One day, years ago, I had a can of beenie weenies, a can of baked beans, and a can of sardines all the same day and my lips blistered up and my hands itched really bad. Oh, my hands also swelled up. I was only like 20 . It's never happened again since then and I've never eaten that much canned stuff in a day either.
toomuchtv987@reddit
They offer so many low-sodium or no salt added canned food options now! My husband has a temporary ileostomy and can only eat vegetables that have been cooked to death, so I’ve been keeping a lot of canned no-salt-added stuff in the pantry. (He also has weird appetite stuff from chemo, so I have to be ready to serve up what sounds good to him RIGHT THEN.)
sohcordohc@reddit
Ugh canned hot dogs? And pork? You’re either going to lose a ton of weight or blow up from the salt content. Good luck 👍🏽
SMTRodent@reddit
You're missing out on tinned smoked oysters, but the rest looks pretty solid, so far as brand new forays into the world of tinned food go.
Personally I stick to frozen veg for everything except any type of bean.
Fry the tinned potatoes. Or air roast them. Don't make yourself eat them boiled, that's just asking for soggy tin-flavoured ugh.

Enjoy that single half of cherry that won’t even taste like a cherry in each can of fruit cocktail, lol.

Beans dawg, beans!
Not enough beans!
DaVirus@reddit (OP)
See, beans are already a staple and the cupboard always has some. So I am trying not to default to beans lol

I believe it's in the Mexican aisle but there's canned tamales that are pretty good too ...
gaping_granny@reddit
I can feel my kidneys shriveling up just thinking about all that salt.
HotdawgSizzle@reddit
Some canned meals are actually pretty good.
Chunky was my go to before it became $2.50 a can.
maxru85@reddit
I tried canned ravioli once. They weren’t terrible bit I wouldn’t buy them again.
experiencedkiller@reddit
Kind of reminds me of the one time a guy brought up a disgusting fridge challenge for a party. Everyone had to get from the grocery store one item of food they found absolutely disgusting. No one was allowed to leave the apartment until all the food was consumed. There was a lot of alcohol involved too
I'm looking forward to the update at the end of the week!! Please!!
DaVirus@reddit (OP)
I am taking photos of every meal and will rate them at the end of the week.

Mmmm PFAS, my Favorit.
experiencedkiller@reddit
Mmmm, where is the plastic in an aluminium tin?
LuxationvonFracture@reddit
On the inside. They are usually lined with plastic.
experiencedkiller@reddit
Oh no...
LLuk333@reddit
Oh yes, there’s loads of PFAS, especially if you open the can wrong it gets into the food, or scrape the insides.
DiesByOxSnot@reddit
BPA lining, to prevent the metal from reacting with the food. Canned foods are usually acidic, ranging from mildly to very acidic depending on the contents. To prevent rust, they gotta use some kinda liner.
Canned foods are also usually heat processed, and BPA leeches microplastic under heat.
romulan267@reddit
