Is an old V6-engined MX-5 the antidote to modern performance?

I had two NB that I loved and will own more newer Miata. However the older gens dont have the chassis rigidity I would look for to have one that is engine swapped for the cost involved. Great fun cars though.
YellowFogLights@reddit
The Flyin’ Miata butterfly brace does wonders for the NB. I did that to mine and also delrin door bushings and a 4-point roll bar. It was a different car after.

My 03 Miata feels like a luxury car compared to an NA6; I drove one recently and that was a floppy tin can.
Negative_Acadia6554@reddit
Nah, that’s what the ND2 is.
People who call it underpowered usually haven’t spent real time behind the wheel. The whole point of the platform isn’t straight line speed, it’s balance, feedback, lightweight agility, and making every drive engaging.
The car feels alive because it doesn’t rely on brute force to be fun. There’s always the Mustang.
Funderstruck@reddit
I mean it’s not like it’s slow in a straight line anymore either. A ND2/3 hits 60 in just under 6 seconds.
kid50cal@reddit
Even on the highway, drop to 4/5 full throttle and you can run away from pretty much anyone not in a 400+ hp car.
When_hop@reddit
Sure if they dont know you're 'racing'.
randomman87@reddit
My dad has an ND1 and I have a 300+ HP car. It's not getting away from my car on the highway.
I still think the ND Miata is one of the most impressive cars ever made. Simplicity meets true driver experience.
Kaiathebluenose@reddit
It’s slow on the highway, please be real. Yes it’s faster than a Corolla but come on
tylerderped@reddit
> The whole point of the platform isn’t straight line speed
>balance
fuck all that, more power won't make it turn worse, lmao
yamsyamsya@reddit
Plus you can row through the gears and not be going 100mph+ in 3rd gear, like how a 911 is.
Viperlite@reddit
But can lowering the seat rails on an ND make it fit the leggier among us? Mazda did us taller guys wrong with the dash intrusions, floor rise, and limited steering wheel tilt/telescope.
I’m holding mu breath for the next gen interior and will keep driving my NC until then.
Bonerchill@reddit
The ND2 doesn’t have great steering feedback and the engine isn’t terribly characterful. You cannot truly change either without parts swapping.
Why is it so hard for this subreddit to grasp that modern cars just plain lack tactility and often lack character?
Is it a lack of experience with older, good cars?
Is it a lack of good roads around population centers?
So often I get the written equivalent of a blank, uncomprehending stare when I mention there is a subset of drivers to whom fun isn’t tied to speed or grip or being seen or being heard.
The Rocketeer isn’t up my alley but a good, characterful, light four-cylinder is more expensive than the V6 so I do understand.
TheAntiAirGuy@reddit
Spec-chasers aren't car people for me, they just don't understand it or, to be fair, probably have never driven anything remotely as powerful as what they're praising on the internet.
It's so much more fun driving a "slow" car at its limits than trying to keep a fast car below the speed which gets me locked up
assblast420@reddit
I owned one for a year and definitely felt it was underpowered. It's fantastic and correctly powered for twisty mountain roads, but when that is only a small part of the total driving experience it's just not enough. I eventually wanted more.
ennuionwe@reddit
I agree with you here. In my opinion, the Miata is perfectly tuned to have fun at street legal speeds on the streets. Obviously it's fun on a track, but unlike a porsche or a vette you can use the car as it's intended legally on the streets.
tylerderped@reddit
YES. YES. YESSSSSS!
MAKE THE MIATA FAST, YOU COWARDS
pablxo@reddit
No
Plastic_Willow734@reddit
If you could get one for $35k, sure.
swampfox94@reddit
35k is a pipe dream. Can barely get an nd3 for that price
anewpath123@reddit
As a Brit. That price is mental.
Effroyablemat@reddit
My idea of an ideal MX-5 is a NC3 with the flying Miata turbo kit.
RevvCats@reddit
No but a supercharged LS swapped Miata is
mastawyrm@reddit
That's just a drag build
RevvCats@reddit

Ok it’s not supercharged but here’s a LS swapped Miata running Laguna faster than pro drivers in GT4 race cars.
Hrmerder@reddit
I would put either a 3 rotor wankel (cause yolo and super easy to fit), or a Honda K20 or B18 turbo'd to frickin' hell.. Even an off the wall (which would probably be harder to fit than a GM v8) Nissan VQ40de for funzies cause nobody would see that coming.....
....
But a Jaguar v6?... Why?!
daver456@reddit
$50k for a 20 year old Miata with a swap?
