Have a dumb question kinda already know the answer just looking for some opinions. Just bought this gun and it was made in 1996 shot a 2 inch group at 25 yards and then it significantly opened up to 8 inches at a 100. Im not using a scope and im no expert on iron sights especially ones from 30 years ago. Hoping I didnt buy a shot out gun

Accuracy issues, especially from new shooters are usually due to the inexperienced shooter. If you know someone who is fairly experienced with irons sights, let them shoot it and see how it groups.

If you shot a 2" group at 25 yards, you should expect to shoot an 8" group at 100 yards. 100 yards is 4x farther away and 8" is 4x 2".
If you're new to shooting, you likely just need practice. Practice keeping the gun steady, practice at squeezing the trigger without moving the gun, practice using the sights consistently.
If you're worried about the mechanical accuracy of the gun, you can try shooting it from a sled or with sandbags that will hold the gun in place as much as possible. That should eliminate most variables and show you what the gun can do.
I have the same rifle but 15 years or so older and it's a tack driver.

2 times 4 equals 8. I thought the same thing.

That maths, sounds like a regular lever action. If you can get it tapped for a scope that might help you shrink the groups a bit, as well as some more trigger time.

Hmm how man rounds of different ammo did you try to establish those groups.? Are you known for a good consistent open sight shot?

I used lever evolution

No im fairly new at shooting especially with iron sights.

Some of others might disagree but first you could measure the throat with the erosion gauge if it past that test I would get a good rest and try several boxes of ammo. The one you tried it may just not like it

I doubt it’s the gun but, it’s possible. It would be impressive for someone to shoot out a 30-30. It’s somewhat rare to buy an ar that’s shot out, someone slinging that much lead through a 30-30 and it still being in that great of condition would be nuts. But, if you’d like peace of mind you can get a throat erosion gauge and have actual data
