I know I'm not the first one to say it here, but this is not an alternative to ReactOS. The point of ReactOS isn't that it looks like old Windows, it's that it works exactly like Windows (or as close as can be done as a reverse-engineered open source alternative).
This is just a Linux distro preloaded with WINE that looks like old Windows circa '95-2000.

would it be possible to use GPU acceleration in a VM, with qemu-kvm spice, and run Windows games in the VM with the project instead of having Wine installed on the machine or even via Flatpak/Bottles/Lutris?
I run some games through android-x86 in a VM and the performance is completely satisfactory.

That’s a lot of steps to perform worse. But sure you can use the virgl driver, it’s mediocre.

whyyyy

because free will of that dev I guess
MatchingTurret@reddit
If you create a distro:

I'm not an actual developer of that project neither tied to it somehow, I just wanted to share a pretty interesting distro with people
Wonderful-Citron-678@reddit
Just don’t use it? Most free software are toys.
Accurate_Hornet@reddit
I respect anyone with the willpower to create a new distro, but the last thing we need are more distros. Unless you create something meaningfully different (that can't be replicated with minor tinkering somewhere else) then imo it's wasted resources.

Nice, someone actually made the Win32/Linux meme real.
Not a ReactOS alternative though.
FryBoyter@reddit
Therefore, I wouldn't consider the project a real alternative.

Honest question: with how good Wine/Proton has been lately, even running Adobe programs, is there a true demand for ReactOS? Because as far as I know Wine is specially good at running legacy (think Windows 2000's era) software.
unixmachine@reddit
There may not be a demand for personal use, but there may be interest in preserving an open-source version of Windows. It's interesting from a technical standpoint, as an object of study.

ReactOS aims to run windows apps without compatibility layers but I think it would take them a very long time to bring today's apps into working state
Marce7a@reddit
To be fair it seems to be good idea. But it would be great if it was released as DE, so you can just boot into wine environment or use standard one.

I can’t believe how much effort goes into making windows that sis t windows that is windows.
walmartbonerpills@reddit
I think I understand the goal here. A drop in replacement for old windows on old hardware
C0rn3j@reddit
No license.
Uses BIOS/MBR instead of UEFI/GPT - Why.
All consumer hardware since 2011 is UEFI based.
MatchingTurret@reddit
ReactOS aims to be compatible with Windows hardware drivers. This is in no way, shape or form an alternative to ReactOS.
10MinsForUsername@reddit
Now that's a horrible name for sure, right before Pop!_OS
RoomyRoots@reddit
Looks like a very roundabout way to use Wine.
