The medieval kingdom/s of Bulgaria was Roman in culture and Slavic(later Vlach) in language. Literally had nothing to do with Turkic people nor modern Turkey.
Yeah because the place they migrated to became known as Bulgaria when the bulgars created the first state there. Simple as. The state has abosolutely nothing to do with Turkic people and especially not modern Turkey.
The word "Turkic" doesn't exist in the Turkish language. You want to impose an identity-based division on this nation. There's a word to describe what you're saying: ideological colonialism.
It's not the same thing, since the separation of the Turkic ethnic groups hadn't really taken place. Those who founded Turkey (the Turks of 1071) descended from several Turkic clans in Asia; it was a bit of a mix of everything, including Bulgarians.
What I find fascinating, however is Volga Bulgaria. I always knew that they existed for a while but didn’t know that they made it well into the XIII century.
Which means that for most of the existence of the medieval Bulgarian state, there were actually 2 Bulgarias - one beyond the Danube and one around Volga. I sometimes wonder did they know of each other and if they did what did they make of that? I mean the regular folks probably didn’t but educated people may have known, there were plenty of travelers that crossed that region.
This was the first Bulgar kingdom, after it was destroyed by new Turkic invaders the survivors split up. Some moved north to the Wolga others west and merged with the local slav tribes to eventually emerge as the first Bulgarian Empire. The early Kyiv Rus state fought with both and Sviatoslav I even tried to add the Bulgar lands to his kingdom. He moved his capital to Pereyaslavet. Eventually he was forced to abandon his plans under Byzantine pressure.
The Bulgars weren’t really an educated society. They were warlords and experts at conquest. And the majority of our descendants which were Slavic likely never even spent one thought about them. What we consider „educated elite“ we got from Roman influence.
And Old Hungary as well, it was them that gave us the first warning about the coming Mongol Horde, they seemingly got trashed so badly that neither managed to recover, being incorporated into the Golde Horde at first, then absorbed into the emergent Russian Empire
Ι was unaware of its existence. But now that I do I can't say I think anything of it? It did make me think of Hadjidraganov's skewers in Sofia though, in the new Bulgaria. And that's nice.

That doesn't explain anything.
Great Bulgar Khanate was existed from 632 - 688. First Bulgarian Empire was established in 681. Why they share the same name?
