The large Aldi or Lidl eggs are tiny so I upgraded a little and went to Asda and the large are actually large. Bit more expensive but at least I'm getting what's advertised.

I did buy from a local farmer.

Then recently I bought 5 hens instead and don't pay for eggs any more. Obviously I pay to feed the hens though.

I bought the hens a matter of weeks ago so I don't know yet!

I bought them as much as pets as a food source mind, so even if it's more expensive, I'm not that bothered. Plus I can 100% guarantee their welfare.

Although an improvement, don't be fooled into thinking free-range is much better caged. Each egg-laying hen is only required to have the space of around an A3 piece of paper indoors, and although technically they have outdoor access, many can never actully go outside due to the overcrowding. It's still a miserable life for them.

I buy from a local farm. £7 for a tray of 30. I have no idea whether that's more or less expensive than supermarket eggs as I haven't bought them in years, but the quality is unbeatable and I can see the chickens happily pecking around when I buy them.

I normally get them from the supermarket for convenience… No particular supermarket. But what I’m mindful of it I go to a nearby farm that has an egg vending machine by the entrance. There are a lot bigger, fresher and cheaper than the supermarkets.

Yes? I realise that a lot of places will do the bare minimum to be allowed to advertise as free ranged, but food labelling laws are pretty enforced as far as I'm aware. It may not be a huge groundbreaking change for one person to buy free range but it's a small thing that's within my power to choose, so I do.

FYI the "free range" label has intentional loopholes so that they can still treat the chickens horribly whilst still meeting the requirements. Most free range chickens are crammed together and never see daylight.

Eggs are 20p each at Sainsbury's. OP said "cheaper alternatives" not better welfare. I'm all for better welfare, but I'm pretty sure for most people their local farm shop doesn't sell eggs for under 20p each.

Don't buy cheap eggs - the suffering that the chickens have to go through really isn't worth it. At most you're saving £1 a dozen.

Worth clarifying that there's really not much difference between supermarket eggs in regards to the wellbeing of the chickens, free range or not. They're still gonna be crammed together and never see daylight.

Buy from local farmers which you can verify treat their chickens well or better yet, buy your own chickens if possible.

You don't even get your moneys worth as they are by admission 'variable weight'.

Recipe's requiring a 'Medium' egg don't work for batch chickens. Larges are more like the olden days medium. They only had three types of egg back then. Not an egg, a medium egg and wow look at this monster egg.

Do you really want an egg that's been shat on by the 7 chickens above? The nutritional values aren't even the same.

Just a supermarket, although miss when my parents had chickens and I just can't make poached eggs anymore without disappointment as you need the freshest of fresh eggs to make great poached eggs.

Also worth noting that due to Bird Flu even free-range chickens are still kept inside (although with abit more room) pretty frequently now.

Clarence court from Waitrose (others are available of course but they're often on offer here), mostly because eggs are such a good source of quality vitamin/minerals/fats and protein that it isn't something I scrimp on the quality of.

Plus I like to think that the hens have a better life than some of the other cheaper ones and they aren't THAT much more really.

I get them from my dad who gets them from a bloke at his pub. Not a clue how much he pays but i dont have to pay for them. They normally come with some kind of stamp on them (no BB date) but noticed last time there was no stamp at all. Come in all sorts of different colours and sizes.
