My AT&T (Internet) and electric bills crept up in cost and I used the chatbots to get lower prices. Thought it might be worth a try for some people looking to try to save money.

My bills started creeping up in cost these last six months. I don't know if this will work for everyone but I've been able to use customer service chats on both TXU and AT&T (Fiber Internet) to lower my bill. Here's the rundown in case y'all want to try:
For AT&T: Used the website chatbot that connected me to customer retention via the "I need to disconnect my service" page on my account website.
I told them Spectrum offered me the same speed for $54.99/mo + tax. I made up that offer but it seemed believable based on ads I've seen. They offered the same price for 12 mos plus a $50 visa loyalty gift card. Monthly bill reduced from $93 to $55.
For TXU: I told them Reliant mailed / emailed me a limited time offer to switch and that Reliant on the phone said they could pay the TXU early termination fee if I signed by X days from now.
There was no such promo offered by Reliant to me. But I did see other companies offer promotions. I also hit em with the " I can't afford to stay and leaving TXU makes me sad." They hooked it up with a plan that had a lower rate. So far my bill is around $75-$100 give or take less per month. It might not be a lot but I'm trying to handle my increasing bills for food and stuff. so It helps me.
I've found that threatening to leave reluctantly usually gets companies to try and keep me from leaving by offering some sort of deal. Whenever it expires I use their chatbots.
I don't feel that bad about lying but I know it's wrong for the most part but I feel like it's okay mostly. Cause fuck I mean...fuck em.
Anyone else ever do this or tried doing this and get a little bit of a discount?

I'll try this with ATT. My electric is coop so nothing to do there.
Ossimo85@reddit
Update. So ATT did reduce my bill by 20%. So about $225 a year.
Spectrum is putting lines in our community but it's not up and running yet. Optimum/Spectrum is showing $50.99 for 1 gig internet so that is accurate.

There’s a department that handles cancellations (blanking the term) and is empowered to make better offers than typical customer service agents to keep you as a customer. The main issue though is sometimes the bluff doesn’t work and they process cancellation, though it shouldn’t be as much as a problem with chatbots vs real humans.
Always have a backup plan ready if you want to go that route.
It’s the retention department.

Need to do this
TXWayne@reddit
Was the discussion with ATT all chatbot or did you get punted to a real human? I am paying $95 for fiber internet but I can go to the Spectrum web page and they offer the same for $50. Going to hit them up at 7...
electricgotswitched@reddit
I was paying $101 and complained about new customers being X and how ATT now advertises no increase at the end of the first year. They bumped it down to $80 for gigabit, and it kept me grandfathered into free HBO Max which we use a ton. So basically $65/mo.
Plane-Investment-791@reddit (OP)
i logged into the my att site and then went to the "disconnect / end service" and then followed the prompts and then it connected me to the AI chat bot first and I told it all that and then it said "before we can process this I need to connect you with a customer care person" so then I did chat with what I am assuming was a real human, cannot tell for sure. But they didn't have any push back and it only took a few minutes. I just one day realized like wtf why is my bill so high now.
TXWayne@reddit
Perfect, thanks. Waiting till 7AM when real agents are available. Chatbot would not let me do anything till then. Unfortunately I am stuck with a coop for power so no leeway there.

I have ATT Fiber - definitely going to try this!!
I did do something similar with Verizon. I have my cell phone, wife’s, and two kids - four phones total. Logged into my account and went to release numbers or whatever it was called like I was going to switch our numbers to another provider. They instantly offered $20/month off for a year OFF EVERY LINE. So 30 seconds of work saved me $80 a month or $960 for a year. Wild!
electricgotswitched@reddit
ATT offers 20% off plans when bundled with Fiber. Might be worth looking into what they'd offer to switch away from Verizon even with your big discount.

wow!

Nice job, but “and leaving TXU makes me sad” makes me laugh because electricity provided into your home is so exactly the same no matter who you have, that having any sort of preference for a company seems so silly.
90sJoke@reddit
The only difference between electric companies is the website you use and the portal you pay with. Some have nice dashboards, some give you weekly estimates on your usage, some look like they were coded 20 years ago.
But the actual service and weather related downages, that's all controlled by Ercot and is the same across the board.

Such an insane way to do things. Deregulation basically just invented a middle man to skim us. In other states you just call The Power Utility to set up service and that’s that.
And here we are, haggling with AI chat bots. What a place.

i guess I just felt like the TXU site is okay and yeah they do the estimated bill thing and have a little thing that shows what is using energy but it's not very accurate cause I have an EV. I am sometimes scared to try a smaller / company I am not familiar with when I am shopping around for different things because I don't know if they are legit / reputable. But yeah from what I see when my power is out the texts I get are from oncor. Oncor where I am has been pretty good about texting and also their time estimates till its fixed are usually accurate for the most part. sometimes they will also text and ask "is your power back on " or "are you having interruptions " or whatever, reply to the text Y / N."
PineappleP1992@reddit
I switched from TXU to abundance energy and my bills are about 50% lower so far. I was nervous because I’ve never heard of them but so far, so good!
Plane-Investment-791@reddit (OP)
not going to lie I mean I said that / typed it because I figured it would make them feel like I was emotionally invested so the bot / chat bot would pick up on those keywords or something.
Nice_Category@reddit
Thanks for the reminder. Just called my ISP and they dropped my bill from $70/mo down to $40/mo for 2 years.

I don't really think lying to a chat bot counts as a sin, but you'll have to ask your priest. Do what you gotta do!
shinerkeg@reddit
Priest will probably try it too.
Plane-Investment-791@reddit (OP)
True I need to include this when I go to confession.
AccordingFox9168@reddit
Will you chat bot with my insurance company!
TheRamblerJohnson@reddit
I wish it worked that way. We need to figure out how to make that happen...
flaming_bob@reddit
"but I know it's wrong for the most part but I feel like it's okay mostly"
To my knowledge, there's no law, so it's not wrong. Sleep well with that. Seriously, this was genius.
zughzz@reddit
Fair use of chatbots
YaGetSkeeted0n@reddit
Eh, I wouldn't feel too bad about it. These companies aren't going to give you a deal they lose money on, their pricing model is probably predicated on at least some people getting occasional discounts. Now if everyone did it they'd probably change the policy but yeah
Plane-Investment-791@reddit (OP)
oh that is good to know. I usually only go to best buy if I need something quickly or when they email me a $10 coupon
nooneremarkable@reddit
Good for you op. These companies make money hand over fist. People like my inlaws don't pay attention and their rate was damn near $100 for internet with subpar speed.
I always threaten to leave when they threaten a price hike. Works until it doesn't. But then I leave. Why live in a large metro area if you're not going to take advantage right?
Plane-Investment-791@reddit (OP)
true. I mean it's not like they ever reach out and offer even just any help and they DGAF honestly in my opinion about the customers. in my area all I can get for fiber is AT&T so it's literally my only choice. I dunno if they know that or not or care but it's BS that they have a monopoly on it.
ReefLedger@reddit
Do this every year or when your contract expires.
