We were spoiled these sort of things were actually useful pcc

In the 80s -90s we had an embarrassment of riches when it came to available non 9mm pcc that were to my mind a lot more useful than the current crop and certainly much more attractive as well as affordable. I am not bemoaning the loss of the penny on the dollar commando M1 receivers that became all manner of commercially available very affordable guns (sometimes in interesting calibers as well)
But the current crop just seem to lack anything except a tactical usefulness. While i certainly owned a high point 10mm i used for deer (straight wall state) and black bear and pig as well as some close predator work it was neither aesthetically or ergonomically pleasing but it was at least affordable.
And yes there are at least 2 companies producing M1 clones set up in a few configurations (they are by no stretch of the imagination affordable and the other two chamberings available are 9mm and .22 lr ) . The homestead carbine is 9mm and not what i would consider affordable for what it is , i could buy one of the s&w law enforcement models but again its all black plastic and the only reasonable option is 10mm . The keltec folding carbine suffers from its available chamberings and its butt ugly nature and absolutely garbage ergonomics .The above sort of carbine has by and large disappeared where during the 80s it was fairly well represented. Now yes lever guns are absolutely a good option (especially in short barreled rifle configuration) but i don’t know i feel nostalgic for the semi automatic outdoor wood stocked carbine! For defending camp or shooting anything up to and including close range deer (where legal) and the ruger .44 mag was potent bear, deer, hog medicine they were really something special. Plinking with them (barring the .44 mag rugers which were usually wonderful straight utility hunting carbines) was pure enjoyment … am i missing any , anyone have any opinions, memories , anything i should especially consider buying used ? whatever sound off ?!?!

I want a Ruger 44 something fierce
Electronic_Camera251@reddit (OP)
I had one of each …sold both because i am a huge asshole
GamesFranco2819@reddit
How'd you like them?
Electronic_Camera251@reddit (OP)
They were both super useful for hunting the thick stuff in say the Adirondacks for bear or deer and when i moved to Texas i still owned the Deerfield and it was super useful on hogs ,varmint, or ferals and exotics to and of course those dog sized things they call whitetail there i even managed to take a puma with it

Would have loved one hunting all the scrub down in the Hill Country

Remember the IWI pump action 44mag and 357mag carbines? My buddy has one and they are awesome
Electronic_Camera251@reddit (OP)
There are also new colt lightning pump carbine in modern chamberings with modern features, rails , threaded barrel all sorts of shit im somewhat surprised because the originals were not particularly robust action wise so modern pistol hunting cartridges

Yeah i saw one on gun broker a. Few years back it was brand new in packaging….$6000
Echo017@reddit
His bounces around in the front seat of a UTV and had one side loose blueing and get a rattle can spritze of high temp grill paint….maybe I should tell him

There are a ton of companies that still produce pistol caliber carbines that either aren’t in 9mm or are more traditional set ups, just not that affordable because demand isn’t enough to have tooling set up to make on mass. “Attractive” is subjective but being more useful isn’t. PCCs fell off because their practicality isn’t there. I’ll explain why they suffer now.
$909.77 is what a marlin camp carbine new from 1999 would cost today adjusted for inflation. For that price you can buy an entry level AR15, Henry lever action (X series), Ruger American with scope, CVA scout with scope, savage axis with scope, Maverick 88 or really most shotguns even budget semi-autos, and many PCCs made by companies like ruger in 9mm or 45acp or 10mm or even 5.7. All of those offer some sort of advantage over the old PCCs of the past.
I get the nostalgia of it all, but the market has shifted. And it’s not like these new guns can’t do the same role just better. Even 300 black out, a round designed solely with military application in mind, is making a new wave of hunters extremely happy with its performance on medium game or varmint control.

Part of it is that i live in a straight wall state, i own plenty of rifles and shotguns and like i said even a few levers (two of which are Short barreled rifles) . I have also never subscribed to the intermediate cartridge Ar. as a good home defense tool even loaded down at ballistically unacceptable performance levels there will be pass through and nearly any situation where using an ar for home defense because of the capability it affords would be an unlawful use of force and certainly would represent a gun fight i could simply avoid and not need to deal with the trauma again . I can see the usefulness of a 9mm pcc in home defense with correctly constructed rounds that would minimize potential issues but honestly i am pretty well covered on that front i want a light sporting pcc that would be a useful hunting tool (the 9mm legally would be legal for deer but not super effective and ) extra points given if its super handy and lightweight (i do a huge amount of hound hunting) . I understand the market forces at play but damned if a .44 mag semiautomatic 6 lbs carbine wearing sporting style furniture (I realize wood is a big ask for little $) or the rechambered M1 carbine shooting .45 win mag (actually any of the non rimfire non 9mm chambings would be great like the .22 jet that was a super cool little cartridge) like i said i had a high point carbine in 10mm and it was fine but wasn’t incredibly interesting or fun

There are plenty of guns on that list that come in straight wall cartridges. There are also great choices for hogs in that list.
What you are asking for too is kinda odd. You want an affordable gun in expensive calibers. The market has taken that affordable guns are for people on a budget, and often unless it’s an extremly mainstream round cheap guns just don’t come in expensive calibers. You’ll see your mainstream hunting rounds or weird AR uppers in oddball calibers, and that’s about it. This has gone as far as making lever guns and revolvers in more mainstream calibers; like the smith 9mms revolvers, SAA copies in 9mm or 45ACP, or Ruger making lever guns under the Marlin name in 10mm.

I still have a Marlin Camp 45. Still lots of fun and useful.

Just curious what do you use it for mainly?

Dude those things were so sweet i never got to play with one as an adult but my buddies dad had one and took it with us on weekend excursions and there was nothing cooler it handled really well, and at the time was super economical to shoot the army only having switched to 9mm a few years earlier . I certainly shot some dinners using that and actually my buddies dad had a handload that he favored for small game and it reliably cycled…and could be manually operated using shotshells
