Large cats that lived in Europe during the Pleistocene Ice Age, mostly in the Balkans due to the favorable climate of that time. Some became extinct after the Ice Age, while others survived even into the period of the Romans.

Were there still lions in the Balkan mountains around the turn of the century? Just a few isolated ones? Old men always said so there were lions in the forests and mountains (Arslan). But I don't know, maybe they meant lynxes ?

Yes, I love lions too. I believe the Asiatic lions once lived in the Balkans; today they only exist in India, in Gir National Park. Male Asiatic lions have very sparse manes.
