Debating whether to just add more ddr4 or just upgrade now

Hello everyone! Hope you’re all doing well! :)
So I currently have 32gb 2666 MHz in my system, not the best and recently I’ve noticed a drop in performance - or rather a need for more power.
Should I;
A) just upgrade the ddr4 I have already and wait until ddr6 and do a full upgrade.
B) upgrade to ddr5 now, but also have to change the motherboard. ( I’ll also be changing cpu - if I’m doing an upgrade I’ll change that too).
I look forward to hearing your opinions! :) Thanks!

Which CPU and GPU do you have right now, and where exactly are you not comfortable with the performance? Are you sure it is caused by RAM? 32GB is plenty of memory, and 2666MHz is a decent speed.

I think it’s more due to the game I’m playing, ms flight sim, that is quite demanding
This is my system: Msi z490 I7-10700k Corsair vengeance 2x16 2666 3tb ssd Msi RTX 3080 10gb
I agree with 32 being sufficient but I just feel I’m let down by the speed

It is quite a CPU-intensive game, so the CPU could be causing it. Try to look for some gameplay videos on YouTube and check out the fps people are getting with 10th-gen CPUs. You can also check comparison videos featuring different CPUs to get an idea of the performance you could expect.
In case you are thinking about an upgrade, AMD is rumored to bring back Ryzen 7 5800x3D for the 10 years aniversary of the AM4 platform, and x3D CPUs do not care about RAM speed that much, as big cache memory can make up for it. So that could be a cheaper update (well...depends on the price and stock of 5800x3D). Alternative would be Intel 14th gen, but if it is really the RAM speed causing it, the problem might remain, but ofc a better CPU like i5 14600K should make a difference.
In case you are willing to go DDR5, for gaming, I would recommend something like Ryzen 7500x3D / 7600x3D / 7800x3D with a decent board. But if these are too expensive for you, even Ryzen 7500f would work just fine and much better than your current i7 10700K. AM5 platform will get 1-2 more generations in the future besides Ryzen 7000 and 9000 series, so you could upgrade the CPU in the future.

That’s really helpful thank you! So far in my searches I have more been leaning towards an amd upgrade for my next one. But I’ll check out some comparisons and go from there! Thank you!

What info you provided is a bit vague. I usually wouldn't really associate lower performance over time to the dram. 32GB is enough in terms of capacity. And while 2666 is definitely on the lower side for speed, running single channel is gonna hurt performance the most in terms of different memory configurations.
DDR6 is a long time away. You'll need to wait a few years minimum.
Like i said, you'll have to describe this " drop in performance " more. Very likely it's got nothing much to do with the dram.

Thanks for getting in touch! Tbf I probably phrased it a lil poorly. But I’ve been getting heavy in to Microsoft flight sim recently. I’ve been playing it on the lower end, but decided to download some of their assets to make it a look better for me. That’s where a big drop came from, couldn’t even do a full flight with it.
I also bought a vr headset recently for pcvr play but my pc has been running that quite jittery.
Hopefully this helps a bit

Ah ok. MS flight sim is a bit tricky as far as i've read and i really don't have much experience or knowledge with the game. But if you're using higher texture packs or mods with the game, it could likely be that the VRAM buffer of your graphics card is not enough.
Could you provide a better spec sheet of your pc?

So in that case would I be able to get away with just doing a gpu upgrade?

I must admit, my knowledge of this game is limited. Here's a article about the game from tomshardware.

Seems like MS Flight Sim is cpu heavy, so you might be experiencing a cpu bottleneck. 2x 2666 stick of ddr4 means you are running dual channel at the very least, so there's that. If 64GB is better for vr, then yeah, go ahead and source another kit. It's not super cheap rn tho.

Thanks for the link and thanks for the help! I’m still in the early stages of looking for a solution so this has helped. Take care! :)

Are you running out of RAM or just experiencing poor performance due to the speed?
If performance is the issue manual tuning can help, bandwidth gains of over 20% and matching latency reduction is not uncommon.

I did briefly see something about this, thanks for providing a guide for it. I’ll check it out later and see how I get on with it!
