What are some interesting places to visit between Sheffield and London?

If you were to plan a 2-3 day visit to somewhere “between” Sheffield and London that you could easily get to both places by train with a small child, where would you go?
Considering Nottingham, Bristol, Oxford. But I’m sure I’m missing a bunch.

Lincoln for sure. Lovely city

Bristol and Oxford aren't between Sheffield and London.

There are direct trains from Sheffield to Bristol (via Cross Country) which take about 2 hours. Probably would have to go via London to get to somewhere like Oxford though.
Just not sure what there is there for small children. Its very much a Uni city, so outside of the small Museum (which does currently have a little wallace and gromit scavenger hunt on), not sure what there is for children.
Bristol is a great city though, having just come back from a trip there myself a few days ago. Its a great hub especially if you want to travel to places like Bath, Salisbury and Stonehenge (via Salisbury)

The Peak District, Dovedale, Chatsworth House, the Monsall trail all in Derbyshire.
Hardwick Hall and Bolsover Castle between Nottingham and Derbyshire are fantastic. If you are here during Diwali Kettleston Hall and Leicester are amazing.

Interesting? The Crooked Spire of course

Yeah but that means going to Chesterfield unfortunately and there isn’t much else - plenty out and about the area but not in the town itself.

Leicester is worth visiting. The Richard III museum is worth visiting and you can see hos tomb in the cathedral. It's a pleasant and walkable city centre.

And the national space centre too

Oxford has so much going on: Pit Rivers, shopping, going round the colleges, loads of places to eat, Oxford prison museum. No idea about the trains, but it is quite a tourist hot-spot and you wont be bored i am sure.

Bristol and Oxford are not exactly "between" those two places! More pertinently, they're on a different train line, so require changing at London to get between (I think!)
Nottingham's a great day out, as would be York if you wanted to go a bit further out than Sheffield. They're both short hops on the train too, so should be painless enough with a little one. You could add in a trip into the Dales as well, which are beautiful if the weather's good. Nottingham -> Matlock -> York -> Sheffield would be relatively stress free I'd say.

Sheffield to Nottingham train is 50 minutes.
Sheffield to Bristol train is 2 and a half hours

Apart from Nottingham, none of those places are between Sheffield and London. Are you just asking for places to go by train in England? Car not an option?

I wouldn’t particularly say Bristol (or even Oxford) are particularly in between especially by rail
I like Nottingham a lot. I’d probably also throw Cambridge in the mix. You may want to look at the LNER and East Midlands Railway lines between London and Sheffield for a guide of where would be reachable within 1-2 train journeys

I was going to say, Bristol is absolutely not between London and Sheffield - but then I noticed your quotation marks! I haven't been to Bristol in decades, but I remember the train ride being a long one so not sure if it's child friendly.
Nottingham is definitely a good option. Birmingham has some nice things for kids, like Sealife centre and a Lego shop next to each other. Sheffield itself is good for parks
Depending on if you're in Sheffield or London, but a day trip to the beach might be a good option too.
Anyway, for 2-3 days with a small child I'd probably go with Nottingham.

What kind of attractions are you looking to visit? I wouldn’t think Nottingham would be interesting, and I live nearby.
