All Hail the eBike

Got an ebike last month, same reason as many others here. Gas prices got too high, to the point where filling up every week began to feel like some sort of humiliation ritual for me.
"Ya.. that's right.. empty that wallet of yours and fill up that carbon-farting pod of metal of you call 'freedom' loser.. heh.. you gotta get to work after all, right? That way, you can have even more money to feed me.."
That was the voice I'd hear at the gas station. Every week the prices went up. Until one day I said to myself, "enough".
I spent a week on Facebook marketplace looking at ebikes, mostly listed by null-years resoluters or disenchanted parents, and finally landed on a folding one with 20 inch wheels. Why? Because I drive (or drove) a sedan and didn't have a bike rack to haul anything else.
I'm 6'4, and look like a bear on a unicycle when riding it, but I could honestly give less of a flying rat's a$$. This thing has changed my life in so many ways I cannot count them, even on my opposable thumbs. I ride to work daily. Ride to breakfast on the weekends. In between, I ride just for the hell of it. Twenty-two miles per hour has never felt so exhilarating. My car's radio has been replaced by the sounds of birds in the morning, the wind in my hair, and best yet, the whiiirrrrrr! when I hit full throttle and begin traveling at 0 dollars to the gallon. Speaking of money, I've used my new ebike to milk my job for every dime that they're worth. Not only do I charge my ebike at my work, I also enrolled in their "alternative rideshare" program, so they pay me a stipend every month to allow some other employee's carbon-fart pod to rot in their scarce parking spaces. I'm literally getting PAID to have fun.
All hail the ebike. All hail the ebike. Governments want them gone and for good reason- you can't herd sheep if they can hop the fence.

When I looked up the laws in Texas, it said I could not ride my e-bike on the road unless it was class 3 or less, which was under 20 mph. I went to the registry, to see what I needed to get it registered as a moped, they sent me to various offices around town, until one of the cops more familiar with the law said " if they won't register it, "treat it like a bike, but use your signals like a moped, and my officers won't give you any problem."
It would be nice if the bike could easily get up to 45 mph to match the main roads in town, but there's enough side streets that i can stick to without that being much issue. And it has been so much fun. I'm looking for more ways to haul cargo for grocery trips and tools for commutes to work.

I have the Philodo falcon and I got it up to 45 last night in dual motor mode. You’d have to get aftermarket signals for it tho. I like it because it doesn’t LOOK like a dirtbike/motorcycle
Any-Garbage-9963@reddit
Pretty good signal kit for anyone looking https://www.citizenperformance.com/products/turn-signal-and-horn-kit-wired-ebikes
James-B0ndage@reddit
That’s alot for signals lol
Any-Garbage-9963@reddit
Brightest signals I've found thus far with a loud horn wired in and already wired up to plug into your controller with no rechargeable batteries to worry about. You can find all of these components on aliexpress and maybe do the wirering yourself and save like $30-40. But as is this is plug and play out of the box.

I'm dual motor mode, my SeeMoon will get to 45 eventually, single motor 35. If I had another gear or 2, I would be able to get there faster, but I start freewheeling with the sprocket at about 35.

Congrats! Besides a helmet, please wear high visibility clothing (safety vest) whenever you can, also equip your bike with bright front and rear lights and have them on night and day. All these for the purpose of making yourself more visible and not to cause you a real life changing experience - an accident, that is.

Check the helmet ratings at Virginia Tech, most helmets are useless. Look up P2R, highly rated and reasonably priced. Also would go to local hardware store and get a high res vest, cheapest and easiest way to be seen.

good story, only issue is weather, and if you live in MN, we just started biking last month. Cold is acceptable, sand and gunk on the road is dangerous. Keep riding!

I love my 20" folders! I have a Ride1up Portola (my go-to e-bike), an EP2 Pro (fatbike for snow/sand/backup), and a Priority Folder (bicycle with a belt drive).
I love being able to get into work and just walk right in without worrying about parking: The bike just goes right under the desk and charges until I have to go somewhere (and I get there faster than a car usually).

What did u get? I'm a big guy too and I want one bad but I'd rather buy once cry once

What do you want out of your ebike? For reliability/durability(and weather resistance) I’d get a Velotric. If you want something that can go illegally fast but doesn’t look it, check out the philodo falcon. yeah it’s a Chinese rebrand, but their customer service is pretty top notch, and it’s a blast to ride 😈 I’ve already put over 100 miles on mine.
I’m 6’5 225

Not all governments want them gone... WA, CO, CA, NC, CT, RI, and MN and Austin, Portland, and Salt lake City and probably more that I've missed have or are giving rebates/discounts towards ebikes.

California, in particular, quietly pulled their ebike voucher program in favor of "Clean Cars 4 All". They do, in fact, want them gone. They just bait and switch you with "safety" propoganda and repeat "kids, kids, kids" over and over because they believe everybody is about as dumb as a child, "and we know what's best for you better than you do".
In addition to all the "licensing, registration and insurance" nonsense, they're also in the process of trying to pass aggressive legislation (AB 1557) to override their existing 3 class system into a maximum of 250w motors, and 16 mph MAX SPEED (who tf needs a license for 16 mph???), with fines of $15,000-$50,000 per offense for RETAILERS AND MANUFACTURERS for violating these regulations. They're actively trying to kill off the entire ebike industry, and influence everyone else to "monkey see, monkey do".
Menvomango@reddit
WA expanded their rebate program from 5 mil to 7 mil this year. It looks like the California one was highly mismanaged and now 9 california counties are now doing their own rebate programs

Shit mpg or long commute to fill up a sedan once a week!
NetZeroDude@reddit
I got one just for fun. I’m in a rural area, and it’s 20 miles to the nearest store. I carry an extra battery and pedal a little until these old legs get tired. Then it’s throttle mode. It’s a hoot!

As I have an electric car that I return this month, my e-bike will get lots of use when my car leaves and I will be a gas guy for the first time in 6+ years. I plan to ride to work as much as possible and also do grocery shopping and errands too.

Hey! I saw you feel like a 'bear on a unicycle' lol. At 6'4", you definitely need a bike with more 'presence'. Check out the Sykell GS9 at sykell.fr. It's built for bigger riders, very stable with the fat tires, and has the power to match your size. We ship to the US and Europe. Use code REM1 for a 5% discount today!

I love this post so very much!
Worried_Document8668@reddit
company leasing scheme is the big reason why i have an e-bike in the first place.
Quite cool if you get the fun and a financial incentive
