Am I insane

So I’ve lived in Dallas county for the better part of 3 decades and I’m curious as to when the fuck it stopped getting dark outside in this city anymore I’m dead serious it’s 11:30 and it’s legit SO bright in my bedroom right now. It’s been noticeably bad for at least several months to a year.
Seriously am I crazy???!!! Has it always been this bad. I have not too distant memories of sitting on my balcony in the summer and it was black as the night.

nah youre not losing it man, the light pollution here has gotten absolutely wild in recent years 💀 i shoot a lot in night photography and finding actually dark spots has become nearly impossible without driving like 45 minutes outside the city. all these new developments and led streetlights everywhere just make everything glow orange all night long 😂

God I know that’s the reason why but it’s still for some reason so shocking. It’s lowkey actually fucking with my brain, and my circadian rhythm is already whacked out to begin with. I miss a huge black Texas sky and the sound of cicadas. I gotta get outta here

I was born and lived in Dallas 22 years moved to rural Louisiana when I got married, nothing but dark skies bright stars and lots of bugs lol I can’t stand the city anymore

Is that not how it is everywhere where there’s a major city? If u drive out of the city and to the suburbs it’s pretty dark there.

It’s gotten worse in recent years. People show up at city council meetings trying to address it. It destroys how birds migrate and all kinds of things.

I had to hang up blackout curtains so it wouldn’t mess my sleep up so much.
LumpyPhilosopher8@reddit
Blackout Curtains. They're a life saver. My bedroom faces Greenville ave - it's like having a spotlight in your bedroom. But the blackout curtains literally saved my sanity.

Come to the mountains of New Mexico. It gets real dark. Great night skies.

Plus the LED street lights and headlights put out way more lumens than what they replaced. They’re painfully blinding.
What_is_rich@reddit
It’s especially bad when there is cloud cover.
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
The grocery store I live by has what seems like friggin stadium lights in the parking lot. It always makes the cloud cover glow red.

Also the smoke and haze from the annual agricultural fires in Mexico, I imagine.
Professional-You1425@reddit
You mean the constant air pollution from West Texas right?
bananabob23@reddit
No they’re talking about the agricultural fires in Mexico, instead of snort jabbing at pollution from oilfields maybe google a thing or two and learn something. Both can cause issues with air quality and sugar field burning is contributing to hazy skies in Texas this time of year.

I noticed this as well. It's kinda spooky.

Imagine if you guys lived in a metropolis like LA, NY or MIA, oh wait…

Ultra bright white LED streetlights/headlights on cars, blinding billboards, even a lot of the lights people put on their homes are bright white lights that keep people up and mess with circadian rhythm. I noticed a lot of Dallas still have the old orange sodium lights (in contrast to other cities that are entirely white these days) but even in those areas it's often offset by all the other stuff. I kinda miss when it was just those warmer lights even if they were less efficient, they had so much potential for LED to provide really cool warm colors especially for lights at night but they instead just to go with super high lumen 5000K+ ones instead I hate it >:(

Get involved with Dark Sky International
Icy_Huckleberry_8049@reddit
Too much development around you. Go OUTSIDE and look around and NOTICE all the lights that are on.
ForeverOk7505@reddit
Get a weighted eye mask to sleep in! Seriously it’s life changing for quality of sleep. Yes it comes off a couple times throughout the night sure, but you’ll get use to it.

I'm not saying it's the aliens but it's definitely aliens
xoxo_angelica@reddit (OP)
Funny bc I actually came here to post this specifically bc my partner wouldn’t stop doing an extended bit about aliens when I brought it up in earnest and I got annoyed 😭
masquefetiche@reddit
I was sitting in my porch at 11 and it was bright. I just moved here lol and noticed it.

Do you remember the night it snowed earlier this year. It was pretty bright outside from the street light reflecting off the snow. It was so magical.
