How is cinco de mayo celebrated in the US
Derminac@reddit
Me personally, nothing because I’m American
Open-Neighborhood459@reddit
I am American too but i am mexican as well.
Derminac@reddit
Nothing wrong with that. I’m not Mexican at all so I have no reason to celebrate it
Open-Neighborhood459@reddit
Lol I ain't Irish ir black or Asian or a veteran still go to their celebrations
Derminac@reddit
Cool. Everyone should support veteran holidays, especially when you’re American. St. Patrick’s day is to celebrate Christianity coming to Ireland. And I’m not black so I have no reason to celebrate black holidays 👍
Open-Neighborhood459@reddit
Well I an notveteran so have. I reason to celebrate veterans day. Odd that everyone should support veterans and not anyone else.
pumainpurple@reddit
Nothing
brubauers@reddit
I mean I go to work, when I was a student I’d just go to school- I know some college kids use it as an excuse to get hammered on a Tuesday
Open-Neighborhood459@reddit
Lol. College students need an excuse to get hammered on a Tuesday?
QuirkyCookie6@reddit
Its a drinking holiday. A nickname for it is cinco de drinko
Open-Neighborhood459@reddit
Never drank on that day. Go to a festival..goes on for days.
Efficient-Panic3506@reddit
it’s basically taco tuesday with better marketing.
Open-Neighborhood459@reddit
Uh might want to learn history.
Fae-SailorStupider@reddit
Cinco de Mayo is treated a lot like St Patrick's Day. It's a reason to drink and eat food you usually dont.
Open-Neighborhood459@reddit
You don't usually eat Mexican food?
Fae-SailorStupider@reddit
I do, but a lot of people dont eat authentic mexican food often.
Open-Neighborhood459@reddit
what is authentic Mexican food?
LynchburgLoser@reddit
I'm not who you were asking but for example "tex-mex" cuisine would not be an authentic mexican food. It's really not hard to search the differences between "mexican" food common in the usa and actual food people eat commonly in mexico.
Open-Neighborhood459@reddit
Sorry I am Mexican so it odd that people always talking about authentic Mexican food..there are many kinds of Mexican food.
Lol.i don't need to search the Mexican food..my family doesn't talk about authentic Mexican food. Odd that my family who from Mexican doesn't care but people who are not from mexico care so much about authentic Mexican food
Ain't that much of a differece..I ate Mexican food every day growing up..we just called it food. Lol
Odd_Mathematician654@reddit
I'm in Texas. Married into a family with Mexican roots and have other family and friends who are either born in Mexico or are one generation removed. They definitely distinguish between going to a Mexican restaurant vs going to a TexMex. A standard TexMex taco made at home is a commercially bought crispy corn shell with stuffed with a cumin-chili powder heavy ground beef that is then topped with shredded iceberg lettuce, diced tomatoes and shredded yellow cheese. Or beef enchiladas are similar ground beef rolled into corn tortillas, and then topped with a chili gravy and then more cheese and quickly blasted under a broiler to melt the cheese. A TexMex restaurant is going to have Combo plates with a variety of offerings like a taco, enchilada, tamale, guacamole and rice and beans. Or a combo plate of a cheese enchilada, a beef enchilada and a chicken enchilada. You do not see a lot of pork offered, Menudo us not the weekend special, papusas and huaraches, are not offered and Aqua Frescas are not common.
Open-Neighborhood459@reddit
I am from tx too. Interesting never had a store bought taco shell with ground beef at home. I called them taco bell tacos.
To us if you going out to eat. they will going to be tex mex. Don't think there a difference between Mexican restaurants and tex mex restaurants.
The rice and beans will never be as good as going out to eat
If you have flour tortillas it's the definite of Texas food but I love flour tortillas.
Had beef enchiladas once not a fan. Wow a tamale part of a meal is a big deal. I've been making them for decades. They alott of work.
Sad_Internal_1562@reddit
Why are you trying to be cocky? Good for you you are Mexican food growing up So did I. It add nothing to the conversation
Open-Neighborhood459@reddit
Who is trying to be cocky? Well I am Mexican I didn't just grow up eating it....
InvestigatorJaded261@reddit
I doubt most Americans who observe Cinco de Mayo actually choose this opportunity to seek out authentic Mexican food. Rather the opposite.
Eatingfarts@reddit
Huh.
At least in the part of the US that I live it’s the exact opposite.
Open-Neighborhood459@reddit
what you talking about? What is authentic Mexican food? What is the opposite.
why are you saying observe. There are tons of Cinco de mayo festivals and celebrations. That serve authentic Mexican food. whatever that is
czarfalcon@reddit
As a Texan I do, this just gives me an excuse to eat even more Mexican food!
Open-Neighborhood459@reddit
Gotcha
Rimurooooo@reddit
My Mexican restaurant was packed today. They had lots of margaritas
thatsad_guy@reddit
I generally go to work
Somethingisshadysir@reddit

Many-Connection3309@reddit
Cinco de Mayo is of no significance to anyone who isn’t of Mexican heritage. It’s got to do with Mexico defending themselves from the French.
LoetherS@reddit
Well that's not entirely true. In Texas we get Tacos and margaritas...
Although now that I think about it, thats every day... so yeah, no change.
BoopleSnoot921@reddit
Yup.
Relative_Basis_2175@reddit
Oh my god that was my first thought too
Sea_Macaron_7962@reddit
Cinco de mayo is not important. It’s about a single battle. Whereas Sept 16 is massive here. Day of Mexican Independence.
balthisar@reddit
It’s massive in Mexico, but not “here” in this sub!
In Mexico, everyone is kind of hung over on the 16th, because the real party happens on the 15th leading up to el grito.
Edi-Iz@reddit
Mostly just an excuse to hang out:) People get Mexican food, drinks, maybe go to a party or festival. In some cities there are parades, but for most it’s just a fun social thing.
Fangsong_37@reddit
I have never celebrated the day because it has nothing to do with my culture/heritage.
psu256@reddit
Well, it’s complicated, because Napoleon III was invading Mexico in the 1860s to reassert French dominance in North America. The Battle of Puebla was a big win for Mexico. Who knows what might have happened if Mexico hadn’t fended off France - would they have stopped at the Texas border? Tried to retake Louisiana from the Confederate States of America?
balthisar@reddit
Mexico didn’t fend off the French, though, Juarez was forced into exile, and Maximiliano became emperor. This wasn’t a French land grab, originally, but a debt collection effort, because the hero Juarez tried to shirk out of Mexico’s debts. The English and Spanish helped!
myfourmoons@reddit
Oh I didn’t know that, that’s pretty interesting. I like to think that since we beat the English Empire we’d be able to take on Napoleon as well, but who knows.
Known_Wind6556@reddit
Drink margaritas
dontpolluteplz@reddit
Really depends lol sometimes a little party or some tacos & margs. However I’ve got a big company dinner w drinks tomorrow & a party Saturday so my Cinco was spent at work & then getting a brief workout / apt clean in.
BabyBandit616@reddit
Last Cinco De Mayo I hydroplaned into a tree. But that's not the norm and don't do that.
Aggravating-Kick-967@reddit
It was created in the mid 70’s by beer brewers in LA to boost sales. Amazing how quickly it spread.
macoafi@reddit
Mostly ignore it. A few use it as an excuse to get drunk.
ShesGotaChicken2Ride@reddit
Stay home.
There are certain days I don’t leave the house because they are days that people tend to drink and drive, and I don’t wanna’ die.
* St. Patrick’s Day
* Cinco De Mayo
* Memorial weekend
* July 4th
* Halloween
* Thanksgiving
* Christmas
* New Year’s Eve
And my birthday is actually one of those days, and I don’t go out late. Out to dinner and home because too many drunk drivers. I don’t wanna’ die on my birthday lol
starbuildstrike999@reddit
I had enchiladas and drank a jarritos.
SaltyEngineer45@reddit
If it’s a weekday like today, just work. If it’s the weekend, get drunk. If you live in an area where there is a large Mexican population such as my city, you might see some parties. It’s not really a big holiday for Mexicans. It’s really only significant to the city of Puebla where they celebrate their victory over the French. I have yet to ever meet anyone from Puebla. Mexican Independence Day is actually September 16th.
nonother@reddit
For dinner we went to a local Mexican spot and got tacos. I had a Modelo and my wife had a margarita. Good times were had.

A lot of weird answers here. I don’t think we “celebrate” it. But, I think my cinco de mayo is the above average engagement. The average English being none.
I was sitting on the couch and my wife ask if I wanted a drink. I said yes. She goes “oh, you know it’s cinco de mayo, should I break out the margarita machine?” and I’m said “oh yeah! Let’s do it”
We had a few margaritas. That was about it
Wafflebot17@reddit
Drink margaritas and eat Mexican food.
21crepes@reddit
The grumps and hags do nothing, or complain while the rest of us find little joys in life. The rest of us enjoy delicious Mexican food, drinks, and have a little fun with family and/or friends. It’s a fun day to celebrate a little of the culture from our neighbors south of us.
We had tacos, quesadillas, and Mexican beer. Also watched hockey, because we are still American and the Stanley Cup Playoffs for NHL are underway. Go Avs!
oldfarmjoy@reddit

Every holiday is an excuse to eat and drink. Less people drink now but an excuse to get together and eat I feel like applies for everything.

St Patrick’s day with better food.
Adorable_Dust3799@reddit
Didn't realize until almost dinner time. Ah hah, that's why taquitos, chips and salsa were on sale Friday! So we had Taquitos chips and salsa
BackgroundPublic2529@reddit
Spoiler alert: It's an American holiday the celebrates Mexican heritage.
What we do depends on where we live.
My little California town has a parade. Tacos Al Pastore (actually a fusion!) and Negra Modelo for me.
It's probably lower key in North Dakota.
¡salud!
LetterheadClassic306@reddit
honestly most people just treat it as a day for margaritas and tacos. i've seen block parties, bar crawls, and backyard grills with a mexican beer in hand. it's way bigger in cities with large mexican-american populations but lots of folks use it as an excuse to host. if you're putting something together grab a margarita pitcher or a tortilla press to make fresh tortillas. just don't confuse it with mexican independence day - that's september 16.
Embarrassed-Lead6471@reddit
I don’t celebrate it. Kinda forgot it was a thing people do.
dirtylopez@reddit
I don’t generally like busy restaurant/bar events so my family tradition is to go to a Mexican restaurant on St Patrick’s Day and an Irish Pub on Cinco de Mayo.
SirTwitchALot@reddit
Eat Mexican food and drink some Margaritas
3catlove@reddit
Yup we had chorizo and Spanish fried rice and made the comment that it’s both Cinco de Mayo and taco Tuesday. End of celebration.
SirTwitchALot@reddit

I think St. Patrick’s Day is more important to Irish Americans than Cinco de Mayo is to Mexican (or non-Mexican) Americans, with parades and such in some cities. Plus it has kid-friendly aspects that are observed in classrooms and whatnot. I say “ah, cute,” if a home with a young child has St. Patrick’s Day decorations, but would say, “hmm, can you tell me more about that?” if I saw somewhere other than a bar or Mexican restaurant with Cinco de Mayo decorations.
fouryearsofdreaming@reddit
I work in a predominantly Mexican facility and no one gave a f or even mentioned it. Just another workday.
Bootmacher@reddit
Cinco de Mayo is an American holiday about an event in Mexico. California was celebrating because it meant the Civil War blockade would keep going, and California wouldn't be stuck between hostile territory and a state thst was friendly to them. Mexico ultimately lost that war, but the American Civil War concluded before then, so it was much more consequential for the US.
Open-Neighborhood459@reddit
Not true have festivals parades pageants grew up in a Mexican area.
RobertMosesHater@reddit
I’m Irish American and agree. First off, it’s actually a religious holiday for the catholic saint of the country. Also there’s parades with bag pipes, tap dancing, Irish societies. St.paddys day and cinco de mayo are not comparable.

some folks actually make Mexican food and get Corona or Modelo beer. Some folk sjust make hamburgers with avocado on them.
Most of my Mexican American friends don't really care, it's not as significant as Independence day is to the US. It's more like St Patricks day. More of an excuse to drink and people with 1/8th ancestry to acknowledge that great grandparent. For me it's bisabuela Juana Maria Katerina. I'm the one eighth Mexican.

In Texas we ask ourselves why are we celebrating this holiday? Mexico doesn't even celebrate this holiday. Why is the rest of the country celebrating this holiday?
Many people think it's Mexican Indendence Day, but that's in September. It actually commemorates a battle that Mexico won against France which was a huge achievement but ultimately they lost the war.
Aside from that its a great excuse for folks to go out and enjoy some Mexican food and have some margaritas. In Texas, Mexican food and TexMex (yes I know the difference) are staples that we eat all the time so my family typically avoids going out on Cinco de Mayo because the restaurants are crazy and we make our own dishes at home.

Cinco de Mayo is basically an American holiday. It commemoates the Battle of Puebla when Mexico beat the French but outside of the actual town of Puebla they don't really care about it there. It's a thing in the US because Mexican Ameicans in Califorrnia made it a holiday. So in places like Los Angeles there are celebrations and it's kind of like Mexican St. Patrick's Day. Basically a day of cultural celebration for Mexican Americans where various events are held (parades, folk dancing, that sort of stuff). In the 80s the alcohol industry disccoved it was a good way to sell Mexican booze so for the population in general maybe you eat a taco and get drunk. But it's not a holiday anybody gets the day off work for.
