Can anyone explain what's the actual harm here?
The DOJ isn't getting ballots... they can't see how anyone voted. They're getting the registration roll (name, address, party, (which is public info) partial SSN, DL number) to cross-check against citizenship and death records, which is something states are already required to do.
"It could leak" applies to every government database.
"It could be used to purge voters" States still control purge decisions, and Pate explicitly refused to cancel registrations based on DOJ flags.
MrD3a7h@reddit
They are getting a list of people who can vote, which they will then compare to people's online activities to determine whether they are allowed to continue to vote. That's why you see articles about the feds pressuring Reddit to give them data on people who criticize the secret police (ICE).
throwawaybsme@reddit
How does someone's online activities determine voting eligibility?
Do you have proof they are doing this?
RlOTGRRRL@reddit
Many states deregister voters before elections for inactivity or whatever bs all the time.
Texas is notorious for this.
If you have a list of people who vote for a party you don't like, it's very easy to accidentally kick them off the voter roll so they're no longer able to vote for an election.
throwawaybsme@reddit
Is this happening? The previous comment said this will happen.

So, no, they are not currently removing them based on "internet activities".
RlOTGRRRL@reddit
FYI some American citizens are "accidentally" losing their passports over "internet activities" rn.
I just saw an American citizen who even lost their banking services.
This admin has been using "internet activities" to arrest people for over a year now.
People have died in the past year, including American citizens, for their "internet activities".
If you want to see how they're persecuting "internet activities", r/privacy is a great sub.

So you cannot site any sources except for anecdotes on another subreddit?

Currently, no. But it is odd that they want voter information and then also want to know who is criticizing ICE, right?
Totally unrelated, I'm sure.
Also unrelated is Trump openly stating that 2024 was the last time Republicans would have to vote.
Yep, nothing to see here. There's no source that says it exactly, so look away. Don't look up.

Lmao, have you had your head in the sand the past few months? Like, for real. Have you not seen the several months of attacking, limiting, and removing voting rights? Did you come here from /r/all because I refuse to believe anyone frequenting a prepper sub is not acutely aware of the moves being made to ensure only the "right" people are able to vote? Unless of course their point is to downplay the very fucking real moves being made to try and guarantee only GOP/conservatives remain in power.
eveebobevee@reddit
Proof?
fairoaks2@reddit
There used to be an accepted policy of not purging in the 90 days before an election. That’s long gone. Keep checking your eligibility with your local registrar. You always have the right to vote on a provisional ballot.
NyJosh@reddit
But but but... Orange man bad! People get so blinded by their politics that they lose sight of what actually matters. This post has zero relevance to prepping but this sub seems to lean pretty left, so it's a great way to farm up some karma.

Secretary of State Paul Pate announced Tuesday.
Pate said he provided the information to the DOJ because the state must comply with federal law.
“We are legally obligated to comply with the request, but we do not take the obligation to turn this information over lightly,”
I wonder if this would be his same reaction if the Biden administration's justice department had made this request.
WarrantinaVoid@reddit
"federal law" that explicitly does not require this. Liar response, and that Secretary of State should never be given the benefit of the doubt in anything again, including management of upcoming elections.
