Its a long, long time since I did that, we would also cut a couple of notches in the Dallas chips and solder in a battery or battery clip, there was a period when the Dallas batteries were dropping like flies (probably due to similar age) and our workshop was busy doing this due to the chips being hard to source.
One of the best things we ever saw was the Amstrad PC1512 and PC1640 when they put normal AA batteries under the monitor, it made a call out a five minute fix, plus additional time for a cup of tea from the customer.
