The Lost Boys

Curious if anyone has revisited The Lost Boys recently, and how well it's held up. Chiefly because the musical adaptation opened last month on Broadway, and did VERY well for itself with Tony award nominations announcement this morning (12 overall, including Best Musical and Best Score) as well as other similar awards.
elonmusktheturd22@reddit
Rewatched it about 3 or 4 years ago, was mid as i recall

Let me tell you what. I moved from the East Coast to California five years ago and I felt SO goddamn cheated the first time I went to Santa Cruz (where they filmed the Lost Boys) and realized they don’t have an actual boardwalk like in the movie, just some amusements and a pier. I’m used to two mile long East Coast boardwalks packed full of shops and food. 🥲
Still love the movie, though. And the soundtrack!
AttyMAL@reddit
Yeah, man. I'm from Long Island originally and spent a lot of summers all along the boardwalks in NJ. No other beach locales have the same vibe. I really want to take my daughter one day when she's a bit older.
halflife-crisis@reddit
I watch it every year at the boardwalk where it was filmed. It holds up!
AttyMAL@reddit
Oh man, that must be a lot of fun! Also a nice little time capsule to see how the area has changed.
AttyMAL@reddit
I've watched in the last two years. I still think it holds up. Obviously vampires are cool, but it still works as a teen angst movie because ultimately, it's about (1) trying to find acceptance in a social circle and (2) dealing with changes in family structure, which are still universal themes.
Future-Raisin3781@reddit
It rules. The 4K disc looks and sounds excellent.

I think of this every time I eat rice.

Totally holds up. Just watched it the other week.

The saxophone guy is still shirtless and performing.

Sorrok2400@reddit
Thank you! I knew that SNL skit with John Hamm was referencing something deep in my subconscious and now I know what it was!
papabear556@reddit
Saxophone guy is forever. Also, if you’ve never looked into his life, it’s pretty wild.
NightWriter500@reddit
Alright, I’ll give it to you, that was pretty wild and worth the read. I love that his codpiece was given to him by Tina Turner and he’s in the music videos for Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.
Azcrul@reddit
Well that’s two accolades that I will never be able to live up to
reapersritehand@reddit
The actual guy or the theories behind his character?

He just turned 72, if you can believe that. Damn, where has time gone?
AlexBlack79@reddit
Loved this movie since I was a kid, its my go to comfort viewing
FrittyFrincess@reddit
I tried to watch it 20 years ago with my boyfriend at the time. Nine and a half months later, my first son was born. My husband and I joke we can’t watch it anymore because we can’t afford any more kids
PatchworkGirl82@reddit
It's a classic piece of pop culture

Peak Kiefer for sure
SixAlarmFire@reddit
He has been my crush since I was like 4 years old. Is that weird?
brainvheart143@reddit
Nope, same.
jmac11281@reddit
I am a horror guy but Kiefer still freaks me out because of this role.

It must have been so much fun to be him in the 80s lol.
Up until Julia ran away w his best friend.

Anytime I see the movie name, "Cry Little Sister" starts plating in my head.

OmFG!! Have you seen the Corey Feldman perform Cry Little Sister with his “Angels”?!? It’s fucking GOLD!
Ill-Percentage-3276@reddit
Oh nooo I had blocked out Corey Feldman and his angels 😂 I can't deal with the secondhand embarrassment.

Its still a banger. Fun movie with a great soundtrack. Every kid who saw it planned how they would fight monsters.
Correct-Cricket3355@reddit
Saw it last week on Broadway. Pretty amazing stage mechanics and all the performers have incredible voices. Loved the movie and thought the musical was terrific.
flash_match@reddit
It’s it’s it’s on Broadway?!!!
I live nearish Santa Cruz and every time we go to the boardwalk it’s hats off to the best movie ever!
temporary_bob@reddit
Just watched it with our 11 yr old daughter who loves all the good movies from that era. I thought it was still super fun and weird. She shrugged and was like "I didn't really understand what was going on" Oh well. This from a girl who watches Holy Grail, Back to the future, Bill &Ted, princess bride, Spaceballs on repeat and liked Shaun of the dead and even didn't mind the weirdness of Time Bandits.
ObiWan-Shinoobi@reddit
I made my kid watch all this stuff throughout her childhood and she’s 23 now. You are giving your child a particular set of skills and knowledge that only other niche dorks will understand and when she finds those people they will be tight for life.
bgva@reddit
If nothing else, you're raising her on the classics!
edwardturnerlives@reddit
I watch it yearly. Still rules
YEMolly@reddit
Watched it about 8-10 years ago. I thought it held up quite well.
snoots@reddit
One of my favorite movies, it was one my dad introduced me to back in the 90s. I still strongly associate this movie with him, and now my sister lives in Santa Cruz, where a lot of it was filmed.
mondomiketron@reddit
Tried to get my wife who's is 39 (I'm 43) to watch it as she have never seen it before and she thought it was corny as hell, ruined the vibes. I still thought it was hella cool!
80s_angel@reddit
It’s aged really well. I actually like it more now than I did when I saw it as a teen.

TerpeneTiger@reddit
Jason Patric was so hot. Bonus points for Alex Winter (). The Corey's and grampa are hilarious. I don't want to be a vampire but I do want to fly and hang out in the cave. I'd love to see the stage version.
MartyFreeze@reddit
Bill S. Preston, Vampire.
TerpeneTiger@reddit
Did you just make this up? Wtf. That's the funniest thing I've heard in awhile. Maybe I'll make a linocut about it.

No, this has been my riff since I first saw Lost Boys and recognized Alex. I'm glad you liked it!
Aggravating-Baby1239@reddit
Oh, it holds up Michael…

Still holds up for sure. Just saw the Broadway show a week or two ago and it was amazing. So much fun.

Watched it a few weeks ago with my ten year old (his first time). He loved it and still a great movie.
mac117@reddit
It’s my favorite “dogs days of summer” movies. It goes really well on one of those muggy hot nights.
reapersritehand@reddit
About a few yrs ago one of my homies rented out a theater and paid the rights (not sure how that wtks) to play it one night at said theater, and all proceeds went to a food shelter, jus homies and friends of my friend sold it out, it was great seeing it on the big screen
mrmadchef@reddit (OP)
Your comment made me curious so I looked it up; apparently with Marcus theatres you tell them what movie you want to screen, and they reach out to the studio to work it out.
reapersritehand@reddit
That blows my mind, but like I said it was great
brainvheart143@reddit
No way I had no idea there was a musical. I’m so out of the loop w Broadway at this point. That sounds awesome!!
JudgeJuryEx78@reddit
I've lost count of how many times I've seen it. It's in my top 5 of all time probably.
elmoosh@reddit
I have watched that movie literally hundreds of times over the years over the decades. Total classic. It was our slumber party movie in junior high and now it’s in the regular rotation for me and my partner’s take-a-gummy-and-do-nothing nights.
Aggravating-Tax-2121@reddit
I made my 13 year old son watch it with me last weekend. He liked it, and I expect him to share it with his own children one day... many....many.. years from now

One thing about The Lost Boys I could never stomach; all the damn vampires.
TerpeneTiger@reddit

BeardedK@reddit
UbiquitousBot@reddit
It's been 2 or 3 years and I remember thinking it held up more than a lot of films from the same time.
I'll add the caveat I'm a goth and I get blinded anytime the vampires (or Tim Capello) are on screen.
Cthulhus-Tailor@reddit
I still love it for what it is, a somewhat cheesy but spirited horror romp with a great soundtrack. There was another thread on here recently shitting on it, and frankly if you don’t like The Lost Boys you don’t like the 80s. Or your childhood. Maybe both.
THRSALWYSNXTYR@reddit

Reasonable-Wave8093@reddit

XFrankXGrimesX@reddit
I watched it again a few days ago and again found it to be a promising misfire. It has a lot going for it, cool vampires, Sutherland is great, Alex Winter, the setting is fantastic but it doesn't add up. We do get greasy, porny, shirtless sax guy though
mrmadchef@reddit (OP)
I'm curious if the stage adaptation has fixed any of these issues. I heard one of the songs from it today, and it actually made me want to get on a plane and go to NYC to see it.
XFrankXGrimesX@reddit
I was about to edit that after hearing about the Tony nominations that I would be down with seeing it because the movie has "good bones"
Suspicious_Size4030@reddit
I still really enjoy it very much! Its always a huge hit of nostalgia for me. I miss those late 80s days probably too much.
burritodominator@reddit
papabear556@reddit
I think I’ve watched it in the last year. I think it holds up pretty well. I mean you know it is what it is but there’s nothing in it that would seem “problematic” nowadays.
FunksGroove@reddit
I have and it holds up.
Fragrant_Culture_649@reddit
Have not seen that movie in forever, I remember really liking it... Not sure I would feel that same way today though. Might have to rewatch and find out
