This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:
- Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
- I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
- I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50
Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

I am considering building a PC and would like some recommendations for motherboards. I was looking at the X870E boards but there are so many options, some have drawbacks like sharing bandwidth and the like. I intend to have a motherboard that would last through the years with the other components.
I think I will buy a Ryzen 9 9950X3D and RTX5080.
Hyper-Cyber@reddit
If you’re only planning on one GPU and a couple of NVMe drives, I honestly wouldn’t spend the money on a X870E. A good B850 board is probably the sweet spot unless you already know you need the extra USBs. I’d rather put the savings into cooling, storage, or just keep the build simpler.
t90fan@reddit
what other IO needs do you have
how many PCIe cards and NVme drives do you need to run and at what speeds, and so on
Dazius06@reddit
If I end up buying this parts and building a PC soon then I will be going from an old laptop to finally having a high end desktop.
I would like to have good performance overall and would like to fiddle with overclocking. I don't have all that many requirements at the moment. I would have a single GPU and I think I would be fine with two NVMe drives, I was considering the Samsung SSD 9100 PRO, it says the read spread is up to 14700MB/s.
n7_trekkie@reddit
A b850 board will be more than sufficient. Some have 3 or 4 m.2 slots as well. If you want a high end one, check out the b850 tomahawk
jamvanderloeff@reddit
Then you probably don't need anything X870E branded, the whole point of that is it can fit a few more extra PCIe/SATA/USB ports/slots.
Anything except for real bottom end things that have thermal throttling issues will perform practically the same, and there's not that much differences in overclocking ability too, especially since the 9950X3D really can't be overclocked much anyway.

how many games are starting to struggle at 1440p with 12gb of vram? any specific ones to watch out for if i get a 5070? and what settings can i tone down to reduce vram usage without impacting the visuals that much?
TemptedTemplar@reddit
Texture quality is by far the biggest consumer of VRAM unfortunately.
Its less likely that updated games are going to have issues with only 12GB, it's mostly due to newer games launching with little to no general optimization. So brand new titles struggle on mid or low end GPUs unless you dumb the settings down.
Generally these have been getting patched, and after a few months the performance problems are no longer an issue.
Monster Hunter wilds, Borderlands 4, Stalker 2, Hogwarts Legacy, all of these were extremely resource intensive at launch and updated over time to alleviate those problems.
stupidqthrowaway555@reddit
thank you. i heard indiana jones was also unplayable on 12gb vram cards. did it also get patched to be more optimized?
TemptedTemplar@reddit
I haven't really followed its performance updates, but due to the default ray tracing settings, performance is going to vary WILDLY unless you tone the lighting down. Though if they have the game running on Switch 2 now. It's definitely in a MUCH better place.
I only played it at launch. My 3090 played the first few acts without issue, but once I got to Thailand (3rd act?) I had to boost DLSS to performance mode to keep my FPS over 30. The amount of foliage is probably the most detailed rainforests Ive ever seen in a video game.
stupidqthrowaway555@reddit
thanks. i guess i can skip one game out of many. hopefully if i get a 5070 it doesnt get specced out of games by its vram.
TemptedTemplar@reddit
It was specced out the day it launched.
The 4070 super was already struggling with new titles (again, probably an optimization issue) the year before, the 5070 isnt even 10% better unless it's running the multi frame gan.
If you're on the fence, I would highly recommend a 9070 or 9070xt. They have been popping up in the sub-$600 price range these last few weeks.
Easily worth it for the extra 4GB of VRAM, the bigger memory bus, and peace of mind.

Hello everyone, I am pretty unsavvy tech wise. I'm looking to get into PC gaming. What would the price look like for something that can run at say 60fps and maybe 2k? Thank you.
Hyper-Cyber@reddit
60fps at 1440p is definitely doable without going completely overboard. If you’re buying new, I’d roughly expect something in the $900-$1200 range for a solid 1440p build, and more like $1300-$1500 if you want nicer settings and a bit more longevity. Biggest mistake people make is overspending on the CPU/motherboard and leaving too little for the GPU.

If you have steam library you might want to look into upcoming steam machine. Price isn't known yetz but it should be priced close to what its worth. It aims to have 4k60fps performance with upscaling

Hi guys, I found this listing for a GPU from an asian retailer. The price is very cheap compared to other sites, but I think this smells fishy. Do you mind checking this out for me? https://24h(dot)pchome(doy)com(dot)tw/prod/DRADL2-A900ITVUA
I don't want to get scammed in case I buy this thing. I am also looking for new hardware only.
ZeroPaladn@reddit
Is that cheap compared to other sites for you? $13,000TWD is ~$410USD, which is pretty expensive for a Gigabyte 5060 Windforce OC across the pond in North America but I'm not familiar with pricing for you.
I'm also not familiar with these sites in general, I cannot vouch for their authenticity or if they're dependable. You'll need to find someone more local for you.
HumanWebAnt@reddit
Thanks for sharing. I wasn't sure on the currency and I assumed it would be cheap. At that $400 USD that's double compared to prices from western retailers. Thanks!

I currently have a PC 7800X3D and 7900XTX. I am thinking if its worth selling 3year old 7900XTX and buying brand new 9070XT. Assuming the price of new 9070XT is completely covered by selling current GPU.
I used to play on 3440x1440p 144Hz. But now I mainly play on 4k 60Hz TV. I know its 50% less VRAM and bandwidth, but advantage is FSR4 and RT performance, possibly quieter as well.
Does this swap make sense in any way? Maybe someone has done it and can share if they are glad with the change or do they regret?
jamvanderloeff@reddit
Depends which particular games you care about, have a look for benchmarks comparing them with the kind of settings you want to run if you can find em.
TunkkRS@reddit
The main change is that I rarely play at the desk now. Its mostly TV now. Mainly story oriented games, no more fast paced shooters. Hard decision comes from it not being an upgrade, nor a downgrade. Its give and take.
As for settings im used to running everything on ultra completely maxed out on 7900xtx. Though I dont play the newest games on release, as I prefer to wait for decent sales

best thermal paste for my pc (to put it simply high temps need to be lower so thermal paste is my go to option)
t90fan@reddit
>high temps need to be lower so thermal paste is my go to option
honestly, get a better cooler instead
the difference between MX4 and MX7 on my 11700J was 1-2 degrees
The difference of a better cooler was 20 degrees
jamvanderloeff@reddit
What's in the PC?
For most normal CPU applications, any of the regular thermal pastes work fine with very little differences, can pick up whatever name brand thing's cheap from whatever store's most convenient and you'll usually be fine, https://www.tomshardware.com/best-picks/best-thermal-paste
