How much do you need to spend to get a non shitty e-mountain bike?

Not a serious rider but I don't want to buy something that won't last more than a year or two. Don't want it to break mid ride. Need at least 60 mile range. What's the entry point pricewise?
lee1026@reddit
Do you actually need to climb mountains, or are you just saying MTB because you like the style?
Because that changes things, a lot.
Tropisueno@reddit (OP)
I'll be going on mountain trails. Not doing stunts just want to ride in gravel/paved trails with lots of inclines.
squashed377@reddit
Aventon Ramblus... It's pushing 3 grand though.
amsr_9@reddit
What is?
amsr_9@reddit
You should look in to a bbshd kit this way you can choose the bike your self. they're really easy to install and are are vary reliable. If you don't think you can do it yourself then I'm sure you can find a bike shop that will install it.
Killed_By_Covid@reddit
I'd probably lean more toward BBS02 since the goal is 60+ miles. Still plenty of power.
amsr_9@reddit
You can turn down the BBSHD with a eggrider on the fly when you're not needing all the power. Its also more robust then the BBS02.

What a time to be alive 😂
AntEaterApocalypse@reddit
Expect to pay $2000 at the minimum. Actually good e-MTBs are expensive.
Turtlestacker@reddit
I can’t understand how some of these are coming out at like 1/3 the price a reasonable ev car?!
Tropisueno@reddit (OP)
I just need a non shitty one doesn't have to be the best in class or anything. Just reliable and durable.
AntEaterApocalypse@reddit
Yup. Expect $2000 minimum. e-MBTs can get up to $10k on the high end.
If that is beyond your budget then you will need to change the type of bike you want.
Tropisueno@reddit (OP)
Thanks! What should I look for in a good craigslist find?
Th3HappyCamper@reddit
I would say Ride1up trailrush. The components are decent entry level mtb with a bosch motor.
redditorialy_retard@reddit
And good MTBs cost even more XD
Joose__bocks@reddit
The Velotric Summit 1 seems to fit your criteria at $2k
Inciteful_Analysis@reddit
Assuming he actually wants an emtb, the Summit is not a good choice with a hub drive.
Tropisueno@reddit (OP)
I need something with gold shocks and a comfy seat. Bad back.
Skindoc_NewEngland@reddit
The hottest bike available right now was just introduced, it shook the industry because it basically halved the cost of entry. I think it's super weird people aren't talking about the Amflow PR Carbon for it's THE game changer at $5k entry with the Avinox M2 motor. The Avinox M2S motor in other bikes, Pivot Shuttle Ampd, Atherton, YT Decoy, Amflow Pro, are now the hottest bikes on the market, but yeah that's a $7k+ price tag. They also JUST released a tune for the Bosch motor to get 120nm. So get a used bike with a Bosch and you'll be in good shape their too, this is the cheapest way to get into the game.

About 2K for something UL certified and reliable.

An ACTUAL legit e-mbt... 4K and up to like 20k. For the specs about range... Does not really exist. You need at least a 20AH battery and that is like 12 ish more or less pounds. Also, the motors are usually like 320 to 500 watt these days but will have proper gearing. More equals more weight and that makes the bike harder to deal with on trails. Its all about keeping the weight down and keeping the bike nimble and let's face it.... on groomed trails, you don't need much power.
Put there are plenty of fat tire e-bikes that you can take on a mbt trail at that price point. Or why they are so popular. I would look at like Electric, Aventon, or the usual suspects. These guys work really well on gravel, dirt, sand, snow but for ACTUAL MBT trails through trees or let alone mountains... YA... you suddenly understand why e-mbts are the way they are. IE, they are not a nimble, more punishing to destroy the bike on small jumps and the like. And DONT do downhill mountain crap.... you will die. But they are very stable and honestly, really fun. Weight no one really cares about so big batteries and motors...
Tropisueno@reddit (OP)
Gravel and dirt trails. No stunts. Just up and down the trails.
Taiyoryu@reddit
Greater the range -> bigger the battery -> higher the price.
Besides you need to balance weight against performance. You don't want the bike to be heavy so be wary of a large battery, and you're already adding weight if you have a full suspension versus a hard tail. Though a hard tail tend to be cheaper whether its electric or acoustic.
Serial 1 SWITCH/MTN (hard tail, 30-95 mile range, class 2) Aventon Ramblas (hard tail, up to 90 miles, class 3) Kona El Kahuna (hard tail, range not specified, class 2)
Reminder that ranges are self-reported and are often inflated and under ideal conditions.
5ma5her7@reddit
$2500 AUD for entry model (bare minimum competent), good stuff costs more.
Financial-Newt2291@reddit
Look around for used ones, I picked up a pedego ridge rider for 850.
But everyone is right, $2k is the benchmark for good one.
Vivid_Technology_145@reddit
i just paid 2k for mine, but i had the funds and i wanted something reliable. my advice is to not cheap out, my old boss did that and his bike went to crap within 4 months
cillam@reddit
I like my Lectric xpeak 2.0
Michael-Brady-99@reddit
Do you want a true emtb? They tend to be light with small batteries, not really built for long range per se.
If you are on a tight budget and just want to test the water, the mid-drive Ozark Trail from Walmart is a solid entry level emtb. You can upgrade it over time and it is $1300ish.
Kingrich09@reddit
60 mile range on a emtb seems very ambitious. Granted I am a sample of 1 and on the larger side but the most I have gotten is 25 miles with a 2 mile round trip on the pavement to the trailhead.
linuxturtle@reddit
$1,300 for a hardtail. Above that you're paying for suspension, drivetrain, better brakes, less weight, and maybe more sophisticated electronics/motor. $4k-$5k will get you a very nice full-squish eMTB, but it's easy to spend $10k-$15k.
Inciteful_Analysis@reddit
Ride1up TrailRush is worth the extra $700 over the Walmart bike if quality is a concern, as it seems to be.
Siakamfan@reddit
2k used. Lol
Bermnerfs@reddit
I build my own mid-drive hardtail with a NS Surge Evo frame, 130mm Fox 34 fork, and a 750W BBS02 mid drive with a 48V 960wH battery pack. It's a mullet using a 29/27.5" Stan's Flow S2 wheelset, 29x2.6/27.5x2.4" Kenda Nevegal Pro 2 EMC tires setup tubeless, Deore 4-piston brakes, 203/180mm TRP rotors, PNW Dropper, Spank handlebar and stem, and a unique groupset combo that works perfectly with this mid-drive.
All in I spent about \~$2K on this bike and it absolutely rips, plus I know I can maintain and repair this bike as things wear out, and aftermarket support for Bafang mid-drives is growing, plus the massive community support.
I am really happy with how this turned out and it absolutely rips on singletrack + pavement. I really hammer on this bike, it's been put thru a lot so far, tons of root gardens, over rock walls, lots of technical single track and it has held up great so far.
The big trade off with a BBS02/BBSHD is cadence sensing instead of torque sensing which the latter is definitely superior for serious trail use. But with the parameters of eco mode tweaked it's totally usable for singletrack. I may upgrade to a CYC Photon in the future then I will have torque sensing.
If you're capable of building your own e-mtb you can certainly get a lot of bang for your buck.
Tropisueno@reddit (OP)
Nice. That's way too much for me to do I'm very casual.
Inciteful_Analysis@reddit
You can get an Aventon Ramblas for $2900. Or a Bulls Bike emtb for under $3k. If you want full suspension you might need to spend more.
Fragrant_Cause_7056@reddit
I just ordered the ramblas. Here’s hoping I’ll be happy
CommercialSignal7301@reddit
Check Upway. They resell e-bikes and provide several levels of warranty.
Castro_66@reddit
Good full suspension MTB start around 2k new. Add 1k for a motor or so.
JimJamurToe@reddit
Yah, a good one that'll treat yah right starts at 2k. But, look for refurbished or demo bikes at shops! I've had 3 Aventons so thats my goto. But, demos and refurbished will cut like 500+ bucks off depending on the miles.
