Audi vs Genesis?

Hi Guys. I was driving a 2024 Mazda cx50 turbo for two years and it recently got totaled by a tree, so now I need a new car. I liked the Mazda but the outside noise was so loud. I’m deciding between a Genesis GV70 3.5T Sport Advanced and an Audi SQ5. I’m in my car a lot (sales), so it’s more like an office for me. I drove both and to a non-car guy like me I like the feel of the Audi a little better. Genesis wins on the warranty and price ($15K ish less). My questions is, assuming both are in budget, am I going to regret not getting the Audi? Appreciate any insight.

My experience with an Genesis G70 3.3T 2022 :
I had this car for 2 years. At the beginning, like every Hyundai product, it was a WOW. Great performance, great price, great look.
But then, some annoying problem started to pop out. The car was shaking a little bit at 70 MPH. Did checked that, the guy practically laughed on me. Changed the tires, didn’t resolve the issue.
The insonorisation was getting worse a little bit. The direction was getting soft at the center and less precise.
Overall reliability was good tho. It’s was just a annoyances problems who is not cover by any warranty. That’s Hyundai man, really good when it’s new, but age poorly.

Genesis over Audi... and I don't particularly like / trust Genesis.
What's option 3?

Another CX-50, which would be fine.

Hard to argue with the Mazdas.
Dead reliable. Highly underrated cars.

I was on the road in sales for many decades and I've been driving Audis since 1885 currently driving my 10th an A6 Avant. I owned a printing company and only purchased Heidleberg presses because German craftsmanship and design are second to none. While the Genesis has many of the features that the Audi has, the Koreans are competent copiers they are not innovators and Audis Full Time Gear Driven All-Wheel-Drive system is second to none. The Genesis is Hyundai's attempt at a Tier 1 offering with a short track record. Both brands are sitting on bloated inventory so they're prone to discounting especially on those vehicles that they've had in inventory for the longest time as they have "Floorplan" expense they've been racking up so they are invented to move those out especially if it's in their inventory. I'd do the research on Car Edge to ascertain where the inventory is located and how long its been there and what their invoice cost is.

everybody regrets buying an Audi eventually. Don’t do it.
nottatroll@reddit
The Genesis at the end of the day is a nicely appointed Hyundai.
TheRealWhoMe@reddit
How is Audi/VW any different?
nottatroll@reddit
VW isn't a Hyundai.

I had a Q5 for 4 days on vacation, returned it, flight was cancelled, right back to the desk and got a GV80.
The Audi we had was lower trim, the Genesis was loaded.
The Audi had slightly better handling, but really only at the limits.
Just based on features and being a big comfy waft mobile, the Genesis by a lot.
If the features were equal, I’d have a hard time choosing. Resale may be slightly better on the Audi if you have all maintenance records, but there’s a pretty strong aversion to Korean cars as well.
TheWhogg@reddit
That’s pretty much the universal rule. The Asian car is way cheaper and they can cram in better spec. The German car is better engineered. So for a lot more $ you get better on limit handling and (in theory) longer vehicle life IF you DIY around the time bombs and the 🇩🇪 tax. As long as you’re not misled by the extremely long CBS oil change intervals into destroying your bearings and timing chains.
Sketch2029@reddit
Having the engine in front of the front axle so the car is nose heavy and you have to remove the front of the car to replace anything is not what I would call better engineered.
TheWhogg@reddit
I am not a fan and they have a lifespan from me. But it is widely accepted that the W’s, and in general Germans, have better materials sciences and can if they want to produce longer lived product.

I would personally not buy a Genesis with the 3.5T. I guess you'd have a warranty... but I'd take the Audi 3.0T for the reliability alone. I'm no Genesis hater, but the 3.5T doesn't have much to show in the way of reliability, to my knowledge.

Get a Fidelity warranty on the Audi.
adamisapple@reddit
Make sure the Genesis has a warranty, but I’ve heard good things about the 3.5 so far.

how did a tree drive a mazda?
ChrisGear101@reddit
Yeah!? Or was the tree driving another car that smashed into you? Was it a road-odendron? Maybe it was jaywalking at night?
justwannaretire45@reddit (OP)
Lol a storm came through and fell on it. Trees only jaywalk in the morning in KY.
osmiumblue66@reddit
TIL!
lunchbox651@reddit
So a storm just showed up, unannounced, and fell on a tree while it was driving your Mazda? That's wild.
Main_Paramedic_292@reddit
I've had both. I drive an old Lexus now. It's paid for, it's safe, it's comfortable, and with 160k miles on it, I'd still trust it to last longer than either you've named.
Talentless_Cooking@reddit
You will appreciate the audi more, especially when it comes to warranty. Hyundai is notorious for not honoring their warranty.
lunchbox651@reddit
Audi every day of the week. They're just good, comfortable cars and the S-models have a nice bit of kick if you need it.
Beneficial_Try9602@reddit
Lexus or Acura as a better alternative to both of the suggested vehicles.

Although I would never pick either of those brands, I would go with Audi if I had to pick. Genesis is a fancy Hyundai/Kia. Hyundai/Kia are having lots of problems with their engines and buyers are reporting that they like to be very difficult when you request warranty work. They also treat their employees like absolute shit. People die in their auto plants and they don't bat an eye. They pay their line workers like shit and purposely avoid building plants in parts of the country that are pro-union so they can pay less and offer worse benefits. That's for their US plants. Their Korean plants are overworked and underpaid as well. VAG (Volkswagen-Audi Group) also does the whole anti-union bullshit with their US plants, but I have yet to hear about employees dying at their plants. So that's...a plus? I guess. With Audi, you're going to get over-engineered German stuff. Prepare yourself for warranty work. I don't know how easily VAG is to submit warranty work, but they have to be better than Hyundai/Kia/Genesis from what I hear. People report having an awful time trying to get Hyundai/Kia/Genesis to approve warranty work.
I'm not trying to rain on your parade. I'm just telling you what I've seen/heard as a car guy. Good luck!

Lease the Audi.
hotrods1970@reddit
For me, I would take the Genesis over the Audi. But I would never keep either past warranty.
MasterKaleidoscope97@reddit
What year audi?
justwannaretire45@reddit (OP)
Both 2026.
MasterKaleidoscope97@reddit
Huh, Well the 2026 SQ5 is a turbo hybrid so thats new. I have a b8.5 and its amazing but thats like a generation behind. As far as the platform goes, its a comfortable daily commuter. Enough room for anything i’d need. Sporty and fun to drive.
