What's your honest opinion on reggaeton?

As a Latino guy who doesn’t really enjoy reggaeton, I wonder, how is it generally viewed in the U.S., especially among non-Hispanic communities. Now that Bad Bunny is very popular.
MadMan_G96@reddit
One of the best genres. Will forever and always be a fan of the perreo sound.
ReadingRainbowie@reddit
Its the same beat every time. Hard to tell when one song starts and the other one ends. I thought it was all just one song the first time i heard it lol.
MadMan_G96@reddit
It’s not the same beat but it does have a base pattern. And so does rock and hiphop and house and techno and so on and so forth. Characteristics like those are usually what define a genre.
Facet-Squared@reddit
Latin music genres are defined by particular rhythms - bachata, salsa, etc. are all specific rhythms.
So that beat is what makes it reggaeton. It’s supposed to all have the same rhythm.
jeff1074@reddit
Never heard of the word reggaeton
Hermitia@reddit
Not a fan, it's too techno-y for me. Give me some old school dancehall any day.
Facet-Squared@reddit
I live in New York, so I hear it all the time in night clubs or blasting out people’s cars. It’s fun to dance to.
GSilky@reddit
Id rather listen to dancehall for Caribbean club music. I prefer the more traditional Latin sound old people prefer. Like merengue or mambo. I'm not old, just don't really care for club music.
Revolutionary-Copy71@reddit
I have a huge love of many styles and genres of Latino/hispanic music and listen to many of them regularly. Reggaeton is not one of them.
Return_Of_The_Whack@reddit
It's the same beat everytime.... But it's a good beat.
Scavgraphics@reddit
I was into latin pop in the 90's...like Thalia, Alejandra Guzman, Shakira before she crossed over, it had a kind of 80's flair that was missing in current American music...I recall not liking reggaeton when it started showing up on the scene. It's sound and influences were just not what I was enjoying.
Possible-Cicada-9662@reddit
As a Yankee I don't really mind it. Not my thing but im not going to go up to them and demand them to turn it off because I don't enjoy it. Im sure most people are in a simular boat or actually enjoy it.
myfourmoons@reddit
I don’t know what it is.
paranoid_70@reddit
Honestly? Hate it... A LOT
Icy-Whale-2253@reddit
I like it 🤷🏾♀️
Beginning-Damage-555@reddit
It’s fun to dance to. Not all music has to be super deep. Tbf I have lived 25 out of my 35 years in a deeply Hispanic community. For reference I’m whiter than Casper
CorduroyGmork@reddit
And it doesn't have to be "because it isn't deep" to not like a type of music, it can just be that it isn't someone's taste.
Saekki10@reddit
I absolutely love it, I especially loved it when I was a teenager.
ratchetcoutoure@reddit
I put it next to country music, which I also not into.
btmg1428@reddit
Good for listening once in a while. Listen to it everyday, and you'll have that reggaeton beat as your permanent LSS.
AaronQ94@reddit
I listen to a lot of Reggaeton.
AtTheRealFuture@reddit
Honestly I cannot stand it. I don’t like, have a problem with it though. It’s wildly popular around the world so clearly there’s something to it, just doesn’t hit my ear right.
MasterOfPuppetsMetal@reddit
I'm Hispanic and I cannot stand it at all.
thomsenite256@reddit
Dame mas gasolina
chile-pica@reddit
Esoooooo
Low-Restaurant8484@reddit
I haven't listened to it enough to comment on it. But I know Bad Bunny is Reaggaeton and I dislike his singing. Lacking in melody
DameWhen@reddit
Confused about why it shares a name with "reggae"
Smooth_Development48@reddit
Reggaeton started in the 90s which mixed reggae and hip hop with Latino beats. The first artist I’m aware of doing this is from Panama, where Caribbean folks migrated to build the Panama Canal and brought reggae and other music to the country.
Diy2k4ever@reddit
It started as Reggae En Espanol.
Then morphed from Spanish leaning reggae to more dancehall with the introduction of the Spanish versions of DemBow. As well as a mix of Panama Soca.
What makes the jump into reggaeton is the introduction of Puerto Rican Hip Hop. Rather than dancehall routed from the Caribbean.
ArtDecoNewYork@reddit
Because its born out of Jamaican dancehall + hip hop
The standard reggaeton beat comes from Shabba Ranks "Dembow"
DameWhen@reddit
The two just don't sound similar at all to me. It's definitely personal gripe. Glad other people like it.
Guachito@reddit
The first tracks of the genre sounded like those old danxehall traxks and slowly the genre evolved into something different, but kept the drum loops and rhythm.
CigaretteWaterX@reddit
reggae vocals. I guess the "ton" must indicate a beat, because every single reggaeton song has the exact same beat
ArtDecoNewYork@reddit
The vocals are generally hip hop style over a Dembow riddim
CigaretteWaterX@reddit
Dont know what this is, but its all the same-sounding. Bum boomboom bum bum BUM boomboom bum bum, etc forever, every artist, every track
ArtDecoNewYork@reddit
That's the dembow beat I was referring to
It comes from Jamaican dancehall circa 1990
79215185-1feb-44c6@reddit
Not something I think about on a normal basis.
1968KCGUY@reddit
To add to this is have never read that term until today. I am also pretty sure I have not heard the music either.
oatmealparty@reddit
Depends on your age I guess. Millenials are very familiar with Daddy Yankee and "Dame más gasolina!"
Common_Vagrant@reddit
I like most of it, granted I have Puerto Rican descent but it’s hot seeing a Latina dance perreo.
cheekkyy@reddit
i loved it growing up in the 90s. it was popular in the nyc suburb i grew up in. i never thought of bad bunny as reggaeton though
DehydratedManatee@reddit
I hate it.
Gunzablazin1958@reddit
I love it when my Latina wife dances to it!
theegodmother1999@reddit
love it. like genuinely don't know how people can hear it and not want to dance lol
byebybuy@reddit
I like some of it but not all of it. REALLY fun to dance to in a South American club when you're in your early twenties. 11/10 would recommend.
Weird_Squirrel_8382@reddit
I like it. I really like it mixed in with other stuff like soca, reggae... I get my genres and sub-genres mixed up, but in general it just reminds me of warm weather and dancing, two things I like.
InfidelZombie@reddit
Tied with rap and pop-country for the most unlistenable genre.
cohrt@reddit
I have no idea what it sounds like.
ProfessionalFirm6353@reddit
I think most Americans are only know of reggaeton through Daddy Yankee’s Gasolina. And maybe I’m wrong because I’ve always figured that Gasolina is to Reggaeton what Evanescence is to Gothic Rock. Just palatable enough for mainstream audiences.
I think if you played a Reggaeton song at a club or even a picnic or backyard barbecue, people would vibe to it. But it’s not something they would actively seek out.
Amockdfw89@reddit
Loved it when I was younger. Gasolina came out when I was in high school and it just exploded (kind of like how EDM exploded when I was in college.
Now sometimes in the summer if I get nostalgic I’ll listen to some reggaeton but that’s about it. None of the newer stuff because they picked up the mumbly voices and sensory overload beats on modern rap
OhThrowed@reddit
I honestly couldn't tell you if a song is reggaeton or not.
front_rangers@reddit
If you heard “the reggaeton beat” you would absolutely be like “oh ok THAT’S reggaeton”. They all have the exact same beat
Bahnrokt-AK@reddit
Ohh, is that the “bum batta bum bum” beat that’s in every Spanish song I hear blasted from a shitbox? I’ve always wondered why every song has the same beat.
Amockdfw89@reddit
Yes it’s called a dembow beat
_fenwoods@reddit
When a car with tinted windows speeds through your neighborhood and blasts a song where the bass goes:
BOOM. ti-boom-ti. BOOM. ti-boom-ti.
That’s reggaeton.
It’s the Wilhelm Scream of contemporary music. Once you learn to recognize it, you’ll hear it everywhere.
MountainTomato9292@reddit
Hahaha I just sang this out loud when I read your comment! They play it in every Mexican restaurant in Memphis (and interestingly, one upscale tapas bar owned by an Italian family), so I associate it with food.
DrMindbendersMonocle@reddit
I dont care for it, it gets annoying
5hallowbutdeep@reddit
don't really care for it, it goes thru my ear.
GandalfTheGrey46@reddit
It’s super popular among women for dancing. For me personally it sounds like annoying noise. I enjoy salsa, bachata, flamenco, and tango music.
Naddyman2005@reddit
the shit’s fire🔥! I blast it all the time weather at home or off driving. I’ll take reggaeton any day over country music and imo, Anglo music has lost it’s “pizazz” over the last 3-5 years
Euphoric_Loquat_8651@reddit
Some of it is dope, but most of it sounds the same to me. Maybe that would be different if I understood more than a smattering of the lyrics.
russki516@reddit
Neighbors play it all the time, not a fan.
ServoWHU42@reddit
I have no opinion about it whatsoever and couldn't identify it if it sat on my face. I'm also a middle aged white guy from the Rust Belt so it doesn't exactly enter my orbit on a regular basis.
Embarrassed_Bag_9630@reddit
Search: Gasolina
Embarrassed_Bag_9630@reddit
As a non-Puerto Rican person on the East Coast, I feel like I grew up with it. The old school daddy yankee and tego calderon etc hits every time. I still like that era even when I find new/old hits.
I am also a fan of Bad Bunny since before he crossed over more. I’m a big fan of his evolution as an artist and esp this last album.
I have to admit, I don’t follow music like THAT so I dont know who’s like popping or whatever right now, but good music is good music
One-Laugh8137@reddit
I'm Asian, not American but live in the US. I love it!!! Reggaeton is life!!!
One-Laugh8137@reddit
Probably because I'm really interested in Latin culture. Bad bunny is great but his music is not my favorite. I personally like Maluma, Karol G, Sebastián Yatra, and Young Miko more.
tsukiii@reddit
It’s good dancing music, but probably not on my usual playlist.
Maybeitsmeraving@reddit
It's fun for bars or parties sometimes. Bad Bunny seems like a pleasant, generous minded guy. I wouldn't just sit and listen to it, though. I'm a mid 40s white lady, if it matters.
sean8877@reddit
It's got a good beat and I can dance to it
chicagotodetroit@reddit
It’s a staple in every Zumba Fitness class! I enjoy most of it.
Crazycatlover@reddit
I'm more into power metal and opera when I just want to listen to music. Reggaeton is good for when I'm trying to train for a race though.
Auntie_Venom@reddit
I like 80s & 90s Jamaican reggae, but I wouldn’t listen to reggaeton by choice, it’s just background music in restaurants, bars and coming from cars.
I don’t hate it by any means, but I prefer Les Paul palm mutes and face-melting guitar solos.
Quenzayne@reddit
I like certain types of it. It used to be a lot more electronic, which I loved, but then it started mixing with Salsa, Bachata, a lot of other more traditional sounds and I didn't like that as much.
DifferentWindow1436@reddit
When my wife and I were younger, we used to hear that gasolina song constantly, which was ok at the time. I find it really repetitive though. They found a formula and beat that to death. It's not something I seek out.
dirtyworkoutclothes@reddit
My son is a 6yo little white boy and it’s his favorite music. He likes Bad Bunny and an Italian rapper with a similar vibe. He understands none of it but he loves to feel the music and dance.
malinagurek@reddit
Makes me nostalgic for my old neighborhood
Adorable-East-2276@reddit
I love it in a club, like it for listening. In general, I like my reggaeton absolutely filthy, so very few of my favorite reggaetoneros have a lot of mainstream success
OpposumMyPossum@reddit
I liked the music but not really the lyrics. BAD bunny changed that m
Love him
Polite_Bark@reddit
Never even heard of it outside Reddit and even here only a couple mentions.
I have no opinion.
Zwolfer@reddit
I was born and raised in Puerto Rico and I have always disliked it
gdubh@reddit
I give it absolutely no specific thought.
_fenwoods@reddit
Not that into it, but I’m generally not into dance music.
SnapHackelPop@reddit
It's whatever, not something I seek out. If I really had to give my take? I do not get it. It's the exact same beat/rhythm every single time. I understand music not being some Yes-level progressive shit. I like music you just vibe out to. I like dance music. Reggaeton does nothing for me. It's background noise. If it's supposed to be a steady simple thing made for dance, fair enough. I like a little variety.
Lugbor@reddit
My first thought was that they created a new category for explosions. My second thought, after reading some of the comments, is that it's probably a type of music and therefore isn't something I'd enjoy.
Meowmeowmeow31@reddit
It’s the most popular type of Latin music in the US by far where I live in the Northeast.
Account-Manager@reddit
Como gringo que vive en el sur, la mayoría de los gringos no escuchan música en español. Yo sí, porque escuché ranchera hace mucho tiempo y me encanta escuchar a Vicente Fernández.
Libertas_@reddit
It's not something I ever listen to, so I don't think about it that often.
native-american-22@reddit
Bad Bunny is not popular. The Super Bowl attendance decreased by over 10 million as people tuned into the Turning Point USA halftime show instead, which was in English and featured performers like Kid Rock. Bad Bunny was historically unpopular.
For reference, Turning Point USA is a group founded by Charlie Kirk, a political activist who was assassinated last year.
CantCreateUsernames@reddit
It's good music, but it would not be in my top 10 genres. There is a time and place for it.
MardawgNC@reddit
I dislike reggae in any form.
CinemaSideBySides@reddit
I know what reggae is, but I'm not sure I know what reggaeton music is
MrLongWalk@reddit
I don’t think about it enough to have an opinion
BaffledBubbles@reddit
I love it! Spanish is so beautiful, especially when it’s sang. 🫶
BankOk9472@reddit
Honestly have never heard of it and had no idea "Bad Bunny" was a person. I thought it was some kids cartoon. Don't really follow music anymore and even when I did it was Rock, Metal and a little Pop.
Working-Office-7215@reddit
I really don't get the appeal! I like a lot of Spanish-language music and I like a good bit of hip-hop, but reggaeton (other than "gasolina" which is just super catchy) is mystifying to me. I am also admittedly a big Swiftie, so I imagine I have different preferences generally than most reggaeton listeners...
river-running@reddit
It's not something I ever intentionally seek out, but I don't mind hearing it incidentally.
limbodog@reddit
I like some of it. I also like some music that I'm not sure if it's really reggaeton, but it sounds like it to me.
Smooth_Development48@reddit
Reggaeton started in the 90s which mixed reggae and hip hop with Latino beats. The first artist I’m aware of doing this is from Panama, where Caribbean folks migrated to build the Panama Canal and brought reggae and other music to the country.
Fae-SailorStupider@reddit
I like nearly all musical genres, so I listen to it when the mood hits, but it's not in my regular rotation.
CigaretteWaterX@reddit
I class it the same as elevator music in a way - it is background music that signifies something nearby is going on.
Elevator music = boring waiting room. I'm gonna be waiting
Reggaeton = a restaurant is doing an outdoor cookout. I'm gonna be eating some hopefully good ass food
rawbface@reddit
Bad Bunny may be the biggest reggaeton artist in the world, but as far as genre purity goes, his music spans a wide spectrum.
ArtDecoNewYork@reddit
Most of his hits are reggaeton though
Minute-Of-Angle@reddit
Not my cup of tea.
BusinessWarthog6@reddit
Its great. I mainly listen to Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Anuel AA, and Maluma
Sweet_Cinnabonn@reddit
love it
razzberrytori@reddit
I sorta know what it is. Not my thing. I don’t like bass heavy music so it falls in there with a lot of others.
Jacob520Lep@reddit
It's like Spanish Polka with the oom-pa oom-pa bass thumping from cars rolling round the block.
Mental_Freedom_1648@reddit
Not a fan, but I don't feel strongly about it or anything.
drewjsph02@reddit
I dunno. I know there are still a ton of backwards places around America but I still feel like Latin cultural stuff blends into everyday life pretty regularly. My 65 yo Italian mother who lives in Michigan even likes Bad Bunny, Karol G, and Feid.
DOMSdeluise@reddit
I am more of a metalhead so it's not really something I listen to. but I am glad others can enjoy it.
ArtDecoNewYork@reddit
I think it's very monotonous and has killed off diversity in Latin pop music
FeminineAdvocate@reddit
Love it mainly for the beat. I’m in a predominantly Black and Latino city. When I hear that signature beat, I know it’s time for me to get tf up and dance.
PsychologyGG@reddit
I hate it but I like other Hispanic music - or at least the pop stuff thsts broken through to mainstream
I Don’t go looking for deep cuts or anything
indicus23@reddit
I wouldn't want to listen to a bunch of it all in a row, but I like it in a mix of songs of various genres. I have a hard time telling one song apart from another outside of different vocalists, cuz its all just the same beat, but that's just a familiarity issue on my part.
Beardedwrench115@reddit
Considering that my neighbor felt the need to keep the whole neighborhood awake past midnight playing that music loudly last night and all the times I've had to drive next to a car blasting it so loud it shook MY windows, I'm not fond of it.
bloodectomy@reddit
I don't care either way about it. Good dance music but not something I seek out.
Fair-Constant-5146@reddit
Not a fan whatsoever but I would love to know about bands such as Café Tacvba or Kinky. What the Hispanic community thinks of them, etc. Ik that’s weird lol
ucbiker@reddit
I like it OK. I don’t actively hate it, I don’t really seek it out. I think Bad Bunny has some good songs but I’m from the noughties so my sense of reggaeton is all Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, and Tego Calderon. Danza Kuduro was like my favorite song in the club, I made out with a lot of girls to that song.
dangleicious13@reddit
No idea what it is.
samelaaaa@reddit
Not something I seek out but I don’t mind it. Mostly it brings me back to traveling in Central America.
sneezhousing@reddit
Personally love it
bizoticallyyours83@reddit
I don't listen to it regularly, but its nice.
Dodger_Rej3ct@reddit
I personally don't encounter it enough to have an opinion, to be honest. The bit that I have heard i liked, I guess
SnooPineapples280@reddit
I’m non-Hispanic but speak some Spanish, and I enjoy it
WinchesterFan1980@reddit
I only hear ot at Zumba class. I don't really like the types of dance moves they have us do because I'm really not coordinated.
poortomato@reddit
I enjoy it but don't listen to it much lately, just a few one-offs. When I was in 7th or 8th grade (early 00s), one of my friends let me borrow a reggaeton mix CD and I was obsessed but I never knew who the artists were or what the songs were called =\
TKInstinct@reddit
I have no idea what it is.
Zygoatscythe@reddit
It's bad but not nearly as terrible as banda/corridos... That shit is horrendous.

Bad Bunny is the most streamed artist on the planet. It's very popular
