Are Baby Ruth bars well liked?

When I was a kid I was friends with an American who's dad was based at a US military base here in the UK. On site they had an American sweet shop that we were allowed to go in and they had, back then, things I had never seen or heard of before with one exception - Baby Ruth. Being an 80's kid I had obvs seen it on the Goonies so wanted to try one and tbh - I loved it. Since then it has been top of my list.
How is it perceived in America? Is it quite widly purchased and enjoyed? Weirdly, the closest we have here to the Baby Ruth bar is snickers which I can barely tolerate.
I type this having just eaten my last 2 bars which is slightly depressing đ
Ariel_s_Awesome@reddit
They seem to be fairly popular. They're okay if you like nuts.
Salish_R@reddit
I don't know of a single person who would eat one outside of Halloween. Over the last 20 years, most of the big candy makers have stopped using good ingredients and good milk chocolate, so they all taste off because they're made with chocolatey like products instead of chocolate
HitPointGamer@reddit
They are similar enough to Snickers bars, which are far more popular. But offer a Baby Ruth bar to anybody who eats candy bars and you are unlikely to be turned down.
Objective-Dream-904@reddit
I love them.
Intrepid_Practice956@reddit
I loved them, but I've developed a peanut allergy so I can't have them any more.
allaboutaphie@reddit
Baby Ruth use to be a Nestle product, I think. Nestle sold off their American confectionary line years ago and not sure what happened to Baby Ruth in that sell but I do know I loved a baby ruth.
tupelobound@reddit
Disappointed that there are hundreds of comments and zero Goonies references yet, hashtag too old for Reddit
No_Lingonberry_8317@reddit
I love them so much more than Snickers
Hot_messed@reddit
I used to love them, but that movie âCaddy Shackâ ruined them for me.
The pool sceneâŚIYKYNâŚugh!!!
nippleflick1@reddit
Candy. All kids like candy!
FarSink4547@reddit
It has become waxy and darn near tasteless
lattelady37@reddit
Not my favorite.
Sloth and Chunk love them though.
Payday bar is where itâs at.
cheekmo_52@reddit
Personally, I love them. I donât think they are as popular as a snickers bar, but itâs not like theyâre hard to find.
as_fast_as_a_snail@reddit
Itâs been YEARS since Iâve had one, but they used to be my favorite. Similar to a snickers, but different.
jmilred@reddit
I enjoy them enough that they are one of the first things I grab when I raid may kids' Halloween candy, but I don't buy them in stores.
justanothernomad1@reddit
I had my kids convinced that they didnât like them and every Halloween they just automatically gave me any baby Ruthâs they had in their bucket!
meowmix778@reddit
I feel similar to 100 grand.
I'm not going to eat the whole thing but a fun sized one every now and then is nice.
DiHard_ChistmasMovie@reddit
My kids absolutely will not part with them. But at the same time, ive never actually seen them reach for them when when we are buying candy. They always go for something gummy. I usually buy some to put in our candy bowl to hand out on Halloween and just rob some out of there.
knifeyspoonysporky@reddit
I would trade for them 2 to 1 when sorting through my halloween candy. I would give away my almond joys and butterfingers and patty mints and get twice the return piece for piece if I stuck to less popular candies like babe ruths and paydays.
DanvilleDad@reddit
Payday is an under appreciated candy bar
moametal_always@reddit
Preach.
Sad_Alfalfa6007@reddit
I did the same, until my girls were 7 and 5 at which point they put them in a separate pile and looked me sldead in the eye and said "Daddy this pile is yours and everything else is ours."
Winter-Warlock8954@reddit
Came here to say this đ¤Ł
AtlanticToastConf@reddit
Same. I really like 'em, but I mostly see them at Halloween-- I wouldn't expect it to be in a vending machine, for example.
HoneyWyne@reddit
Maybe not as often now, but they used to be pretty standard.
Garden_gnome1609@reddit
They're in every single gas station.
SpasticSparrow337@reddit
It's considered an old person candy in my area, but I used to LOVE them. Top tier candy bar. Unfortunately, I developed a peanut allergy and can't have them anymore. I miss them and Reese's SO MUCH.
crazycatlady331@reddit
Watch Caddyshack.
Then get back to this thread.
Call_Me_Papa_Bill@reddit
Just the Goonies movie? No mention of their cameo in Caddyshack? đ
crazycatlady331@reddit
Came here to mention Caddyshack.
Adamon24@reddit
I donât think Iâve ever met anyone voice an opinion on them before today. Theyâre kind of a background candy that you find in variety candy mixes.
Theyâre pretty good though
Anubis-Hound@reddit
I think they're nasty. I used to like another chocolate bar called 3 musketeers as a kid but they're too airy and artificial tasting.
BadHairDay-1@reddit
Caddy Shack.
Piper-Bob@reddit
Every grocery store has them in the checkout line, so they're fairly popular, but they don't make the top 10. I like them a lot.
Chicago_Avocado@reddit
They aren't bad. I don't really buy them though.
As a historical note, its an old candy bar that was made in the 1920s, but is not the oldest you can find. Necco wafers were in Civil War Rations (And they taste like it...) Soldiers would mix corn grits, and coffee grounds in a mess cup and then poor boiling water over it, and add the necco waffers for sugar. The gits would float to the top, then you would drink the coffee, and throw the coffee grounds on the bottom away.
Freyjas_child@reddit
I rarely see them in the Northeast except during Halloween. Most people prefer other candy bars. They were more commonly available in the 80s and 90s.
HerdingCatsAllDay@reddit
They are one of the few candies that my kids might get for Halloween that go to waste or get given away to someone else, as no one in our family likes them. I think the chocolate is sub-par and the peanuts are too big. We don't really care for Butterfinger or Whoppers either, or the weird versions of licorice (we like regular length Strawberry Twizzlers but not any of the Halloween versions.) I used to love Whoppers but the chocolate on those are bad now also, very waxy.
Astute_Primate@reddit
Food of the gods
Chemical-Mix-6206@reddit
They aren't as heavily advertised so not as popular, but I think the Baby Ruth is the perfect candy bar. I always get a bag at hallloween and "quality test" before the trick or treaters show up.
Elmo-Mcphearson@reddit
Honestly, can't eat one with out doing an impression of Sloth from the Goonies.
Obviously, I can never eat these in public.
OK_Stop_Already@reddit
They're alright. I'm more of a twix person.
thomsenite256@reddit
Niche. Only see that on Halloween really. I'd say it's a mid-tier candy. I personally like them. But it would be a little unusual for someone to say its a favorite.
dantes_b1tch@reddit (OP)
That's really surprising that as well. Thank you âşď¸
mooshinformation@reddit
I think they used to have salt on top and they don't anymore, so not as good now
9BALL22@reddit
Payday has salt instead of the chocolate coating. Baby Ruth hasn't had salt in my 68 year lifetime.
RodeoBoss66@reddit
There's a chocolate version of Payday as well. It's good.
9BALL22@reddit
So it's like a Baby Ruth or an OH Henry? I've never seen one, but I don't eat many sweets anymore.
RodeoBoss66@reddit
Yeah, it's similar to both Baby Ruth and Oh Henry, just more peanuts. It's literally a Payday bar dipped in chocolate. It's slightly saltier than the competition, but not as salty as a regular Payday bar.
9BALL22@reddit
đ
HoneyWyne@reddit
I hate salt with chocolate or caramel, so I can say that you are correct.
Garden_gnome1609@reddit
It's my favorite.
Blue_Star_Child@reddit
I love them too. Love Paydays.
TigBiddies710@reddit
Paydays are prime boomer candy bars. Very good though.
TsundereLoliDragon@reddit
I actually don't like the normal ones but the chocolate covered are so damn good.
Foxy_locksy1704@reddit
They are one of my favorites!
saison257@reddit
Omg Payday is my absolute favorite. Baby Ruth is a very close second. Then the Reese's Easter Eggs (specifically the eggs - best peanut butter to chocolate ratio, haha).
ReversedFrog@reddit
Caffeine and I don't get along, so Paydays are my candy of choice.
SteampunkRobin@reddit
Paydays rule.

BoringPrinciple2542@reddit

Basicly-Inevitable@reddit
Not unusual at all.
Shortstack1980@reddit
My favorite too! Underrated candy bar, imo.
drillgorg@reddit
Not that unusual, my favorite way Payday bars growing up and they're definitely an odd choice.
GeneralBlumpkin@reddit
Have you tried a 100grand bar? I've ignored them my entire life because I thought it was on the same level as the old people pineapple candy's but I tasted it and it was great
dwhite21787@reddit
Baby Ruth, $100k, and Take 5
Dragosal@reddit
I like them but I'm not buying them unless they come in assorted bag of other bars, so indirectly
zoppaTheDim@reddit
Shows up on vending machines.
asexualrhino@reddit
I see them all over but have never once seen someone eat them and have never had one myself. I think they're considered old people candy.
ktgraze@reddit
Wow my moment has come. I believe that Baby Ruthâs are the most underrated American candy bar. There, I said it.
sean8877@reddit
Just don't drop a Baby Ruth bar in the pool, the pool will clear with a "doody" alert and Carl will end up eating it.
cmcglinchy@reddit
I wouldnât say that theyâre as popular as, say Milky Way, 3 Musketeers, Snickers, and others.
SuperLateToItAll@reddit
FWIW an Oh Henry bar in Canada (and maybe the UK?) is almost identical to a Baby Ruth!
KrispyAvocado@reddit
I never really liked them.
garublador@reddit
IMO it's one of the most underrated candy bars. It's as least as good as Snickers, but seems to be way less popular. I think they'd be much more popular and well liked if more people tried them more often.
evaj95@reddit
I'll eat one but they're not my favorite. I prefer Hershey's or Reece's.
Longjumping-Air1489@reddit
2nd tier behind Snickers.
voteblue18@reddit
Halloween candy definitely only time of year I really see them, but then again Iâm not really looking.
They are in no way fancy or âgoodâ chocolate but tasty nonetheless. But the chocolate flakes off too easily when you bite them.
therealdrewder@reddit
I used to like them when i was younger. It feels weird to have a candy bar named after Grover Cleveland's daughter.
sean8877@reddit
They're good frozen in the summer
Fuckspez42@reddit
I would put Baby Ruth in the low-middle tier of American candy bars, but itâs important for me to also reveal that my particular taste in candy bars is not indicative of what Iâd consider to be the âaverageâ American.
My âtop 3â candy bars are Zagnut, Payday, and Snickers; I might just really like peanuts.
sean8877@reddit
Baby Ruth have peanuts. I'm a peanut lover and like all 3 you mentioned and like Baby Ruth since they all have peanuts.
Corbanis_Maximus@reddit
Babby Ruth and Butterfingers were my favorite as a child but as an adult I rarely eat candy and if I do its a kit Kat or Reeses Cup.
thats-gold-jerry@reddit
Iâm 35. Iâve never had one.
SalaciousOne4@reddit
Like you, I prefer Baby Ruth over Snickers by a mile! As for what is typical in America in general, itâs probably a pretty varied preference.
dantes_b1tch@reddit (OP)
100%
My comparison is to the UK version of snickers as haven't tried US version, but genuinely baby Ruth is my favourite chocolate bar of them all.
ThatUbu@reddit
Snickers are more popular, but theyâre both seen as candy bars with long histories and about the same quality.
Famously, the Baby Ruth was named to sell off the popularity of baseball player Babe Ruth around when he first joined the Yankees
Iâm not sure if that means anything in Britain, but Babe Ruth remains the most famous player in baseball history, even a century after he played. When Babe Ruth threatened legal action for not endorsing the candy bar, the makers of the Baby Ruth made up a story that it was named after an ex-presidentâs daughter Ruth.
Curmudgy@reddit
The company denied that, claiming that it was named after President Grover Cleveland's daughter, who died at the age of 12. Some people allege that's a cover-up to avoid having to pay royalties to the baseball player. We'll probably never know for sure.
Luna_C1888@reddit
This is completely false. It was named after President Grover Clevelandâs daughter, Ruth, and has no relation to the baseball player or his career
TheLonelySnail@reddit
Yes! Baby Ruth > Snickers
Push_the_button_Max@reddit
They were my and my momâs favorite, growing up.
Basic_Scale6330@reddit
Rough onnyour teeth and the poor man's snickers
FishHockeydrop@reddit
Even though I grew up on Goonies, I also grew up on Caddyshack. Baby Ruth is hard for me to eat.
In the other hand, I buy Chunky bars.
MsPooka@reddit
I don't know anyone who's actually eaten a chucky bar.
FishHockeydrop@reddit
They sound dumb. âChocolate, raisins, and peanuts. I can make that at home.â Tastes good though.
jcoigny@reddit
I enjoy them, I don't often consume candy bars much in the past 30 years but I'll never turn down a good baby Ruth
ExampleSad1816@reddit
I love them, theyâre just not readily available at a lot of places.
Icy_Huckleberry_8049@reddit
YES
Satsuki7104@reddit
Never had one
IneffableOpinion@reddit
I ate them a lot as a kid. Itâs one of the most prominently displayed candies at the store along with snickers and butterfinger
Iâm jealous you have those honeycomb candies. I would eat those every day if they were easier to find in the states
AtheneSchmidt@reddit
It's not a candy bar I would buy over other options, but I would happily eat one if offered.
I think that most of the other Americans I know feel pretty similarly (except my mom, she will absolutely buy a baby Ruth unless there is black licorice.)
procrastinatorsuprem@reddit
I love Baby Ruth's. They are popular around Halloween.
Neakhanie@reddit
I donât care for them, but they are an historical candy bar in that they were the first candy bar to be sold nationwide. My grandmother loved them - she came of age just as they became popular on a national level. Those and Tootsie Rolls.
harpejjist@reddit
They aren't on the candy A list but they are definitely on the B list. And liked well enough.
Possible-Cicada-9662@reddit
I don't think i've every heard anyone say they like Baby Ruth bars but I also haven't heard anyone say they dislike Baby Ruth Bars. Sorta a candy that is forgotten. But atleast they aren't 3 musketeers
cameronpark89@reddit
maybe for older people
Lookie_Lou12@reddit
Those have always been my favorite. Still love them the most.
Big-Dig-Pig@reddit
I always thought of them as Old Person Candy just because of the branding. I didnât try one until I was already an adult, and I thought it was pretty good. I love a Snickers bar though.
Crissup@reddit
Numerous great candy bars have been discontinued over the years due to low sales, so the fact that Baby Ruth is still made shows that there is still a good market for them.
Turbulent-Artist961@reddit
These are in the unknown category of candy bars that nobody realistically buys and are usually eaten during Halloween due to them being included in fun size variety packs. Among their ranks include almond joys, 100 grand bars, and three musketeers
Remote-Wafer3321@reddit
I've given it very little thought over the course of my life, to the point of being surprised when my friend asked me to bring some Baby Ruth to England when I visited him. It's just kinda "meh" but he was stoked.
bigdaddyangeles@reddit
not super popular, seen more as an âold personâ candy
dantes_b1tch@reddit (OP)
Wow really? I suppose I am 42 so guess I fall in to that category now đ I didn't expect that at all. Thank you

Iâm in your age group, it was kind of in the middle of the popular candy bars in the 90s.
dantes_b1tch@reddit (OP)
What would you say was top back in the 90's?
snmnky9490@reddit
Snickers, kit Kat, twix, those kudos chocolate covered mini granola bars, plus the eternal staples like Hershey's bar and m&ms
fireflypoet@reddit
Almond Joy.
snmnky9490@reddit
I'd say Almond Joys were common enough to see around but not in the most popular tier
BoringPrinciple2542@reddit
You didnât mention Zeros lol.
Key-Lunch-4763@reddit
Havenât had a Zero in years but it was one of my favorites
sunshineinthe813@reddit
Me, too. Do they still sell them?
snmnky9490@reddit
Huh interesting... I've literally never even heard of those before just now!
dantes_b1tch@reddit (OP)
A granola bar was one of the other things I got there but can't remember who made it or what it was called. That was also incredible.
snmnky9490@reddit
Lol there is quite a wide range of granola bars ranging from basically a rice krispie treat chocolate filled dessert, to just compressed oats, to some kind of high protein high fiber bar.
It's about as variable as saying you had a sandwich lol
dantes_b1tch@reddit (OP)
Haha oh I know. I just wish I knew what that specific one was as it was incredible.
He used to bring one in with his lunch and always had to get him to give me a bit of whatever it was.
Was my version of crack.
PikaPonderosa@reddit
Kudos bars? They had mini-m&m's or chocolate chip ones.
hannahstohelit@reddit
I forgot about Kudos granola bars! Those were amazing when I was a kid and then I had one in college and felt like I was going to vomit, I donât know why.
snmnky9490@reddit
They're sickeningly sweet and your 90s kid brain was used to that amount of excessive sugar lol
Waisted-Desert@reddit
Whatchamacallit were the best, just not the most popular.

Responsible_Trash_40@reddit
Reeceâs, Butterfinger, Snickers, Kit Kat.
Black_Velvet_Band@reddit
I think most kids would say they have too many nuts and would prefer a candy bar with fewer nuts like Snickers, or none at all like Mars or Milky Way.
macoafi@reddit
I'm almost 40 and would also say there are too many nuts. Any amount of nuts is too many. It's one thing to eat a handful of cashews. It's another thing to hide nuts inside other food. Hard foods don't go inside soft foods. You can have a hard shell with a soft middle (like a chocolate covered cherry), but not vice versa.
9BALL22@reddit
Swiss Almond Vanilla is my favorite Haagen Dazs flavor đ
snmnky9490@reddit
I'm confused? I'd consider Snickers one of the nuttiest candy bars you can get
Black_Velvet_Band@reddit
Youâre not wrong, but Baby Ruth still has more peanuts than Snickers. Itâs a crazy amount of nuts. Thatâs why old people like them. You donât run into many kids who prefer chocolate-covered peanuts to just chocolate.
9BALL22@reddit
The Mars bar was changed years ago, but still has nuts. It's sort of an almond Snickers now.
dantes_b1tch@reddit (OP)
Also surprised by this. I can't say I've had a mars here in england (or seen one) that has nuts in it
Black_Velvet_Band@reddit
Mars in the US had almonds until they discontinued it in 2002 (they now have Snickers Almond instead). Mars outside the US never had almonds.
Blunderhorse@reddit
Thereâs also a huge variety of candy bars available to us. Snickers bars are probably more popular because they have a similar ingredient profile, but with a layered arrangement and better marketing.
It probably doesnât help that Baby Ruth was once produced by Nestle, which many consumers started avoiding after their baby formula incident.
bigdaddyangeles@reddit
lol 42 isnt old! as someone else said, snickers are way more popular and more âall age friendlyâ; i personally never liked either cause i hate nuts lmao
Wastedgent@reddit
It's my favorite candy bar. Yeah I'm 63 years old too.

MsPooka@reddit
I'd stay they're top 10 in popular chocolate candies. More popular than almond job but less popular than snickers or reese's. I love them, personally. Snickers, Butterfinger, and baby ruth are my 3 fav candy bars. You might also like a Payday. It's the same as a baby ruth except it's not covered in chocolate and the peanuts are salted. It's very under rated imho.

baby ruth is definitely a classic here but not as huge as snickers or reese's. older folks especially remember them from the goonies era. i feel you on running out - that depressing feeling hits hard. you can grab baby ruth bars online through import shops. some people also say the taste is close to a curly wurly but with better chocolate coating.

AmishAngst@reddit
I think they are well-liked, but not popular. Like it's not going to be a Top 3 candy bar on anyone's list (with some exceptions obviously). Maybe not even Top 10. You're not going to hear a lot of "Hey, when you're at the vending machine/gas station/grocery, will you pick me up a Baby Ruth?" the same way you would with other candy bars like Twix or Kit Kat or Snickers or other non-candy bar candy like M&Ms or Skittles. Maybe some of it is just the pervasive marketing of other brands and therefore name recognition. But if Baby Ruth is available for the taking, most people aren't going to turn their nose up at it and you'll probably hear "Wow, I forgot how much I liked these." It's one of those weird situations where likeability just doesn't translate into popularity, even though they are widely available.
Jill1974@reddit

Silly-Shoulder-6257@reddit
It was my favorite at the time.
AshtonCopernicus@reddit
We have this huge candy jar in the kitchen at work that people put their excess candy into, if maybe they had a personal event or something. It's usually filled with Milky Way, Snickers, Hershey's, Reece's, but occasionally we'll get a random on in there like a Baby Ruth. I've never bought one in my life, but if I see it on top the jar I'm taking it lol. It's not my favorite, but I just never have them so it's a nice change of pace.
Redbubble89@reddit
Too similar to Snikers and I always get it confused with Pay Day because the packaging is similar. It also doesn't help that it's not Mars or Hershey. Even Nestle gets pushed to the bottom shelf.
Dangerous-Safe-4336@reddit
Nestle uses bland, boring, too-sweet chocolate. Several of my childhood favorites used to come from Annabelle, like the Milky Way bar.
Redbubble89@reddit
I can't recall the last time I've had a Crunch bar or remember the flavor.
My mother was big into dark so it was always around the house growing up. Still had cheap Halloween candy when young but if I get chocolate as an adult, it's Lindt or Ghirardell.

I really love them. They used to be my regular rotation when candy bars werenât so expensive (and I have the caloric flexibility to eat them more often lol)
ReactionAble7945@reddit
They are available. They are not my favorite.
Kellzy1212@reddit
I love them, but i donât really buy candy bars so i only get them around Halloween. Theyâre better than snickers. I like the nougat/nut ratio better.
blueboxtravelagency@reddit
I love Baby Ruth bars, but they can be hard to find in stores
Livvylove@reddit
It's my favorite but this past Halloween they didn't taste quite right
JenniferJuniper6@reddit
I used to love them until I developed a peanut allergy at the age of 53. Youâd find them everywhere, including vending machines, so they must be reasonably popular but Iâve seldom seen anyone buying one.
StardogChamp@reddit
Snickers are way more popular
dantes_b1tch@reddit (OP)
Interesting, thank you. Strange how taste is. I imagine there is a difference between UK and US snickers too, but the UK one is...dull imo.
im_on_the_case@reddit
No real difference between the two. The US Snickers used to be sweeter with noticeably worse chocolate but now they are both crafted to the same dogshit standard.
BaroqueNRoller@reddit
I think Snickers go too heavy on the peanuts, which is why I prefer the Baby Ruth.
LopsidedGrapefruit11@reddit
Iâve never really liked snickers but I really like the almond and pecan versions.
Green-Machine200@reddit
Love them
spring13@reddit
I love them. I'm a nougat fan anyway, but the full combination of flavors and textures is exactly the kind of thing I like.
Ok_Tumbleweed_1150@reddit
I would say at this time theyâre less preferred and more old fashioned. Like when you get mix bags for holidays, almost never included vs the more popular milky way, twix, reeses
FlyByPC@reddit
They're a candy bar among many others. My guess is they're not quite as popular as Snickers, Milky Way, Twix, Nestle Crunch, and KitKat, but I don't know that.
I'll eat them but don't really like them as much as, say, Nestle Crunch.
Capable-Pressure1047@reddit
Baby Ruth, 100 Grand and Chunky will always tempt me at the grocery check out line .
Due-Effect-3543@reddit
When I was a kid, it was my favorite, worth the dime it cost (more than some others). We were on an American Army base at the time.
Beginning_End_361@reddit
It was my father-in-lawâs favorite. He would tell us that he would buy a Pepsi for 5 cents and a Baby Ruth to go with it.
oswin13@reddit
They're edible. Not as good as a Pearson's Nut Roll. Really only see them in those huge assorted bags of candy for Halloween.
FreeKevinBrown@reddit
I like em.
im_in_hiding@reddit
Big fan. Great for a long bike ride day
GeauxCup@reddit
It's one of those things that I love when I eat it, but I never actively seek them out. Not sure why.
sean8877@reddit
As a kid I used to like them
SteampunkExplorer@reddit
I see them all the time in stores, but not everywhere. I get the impression that they're popular, but not to the same extent as something like Snickers or Reese's.
I like them, but my personal favorite is Milky Way Midnight. đ¤¤
RodeoBoss66@reddit
I've always liked them!
tenehemia@reddit
Weirdly I don't think ever tried one until I was in my 30s. It was always just one of those "other" candy bars that I never picked. But now I love them. They've just got so much different stuff going on, but I probably wouldn't have appreciated that as a kid.
SockSock81219@reddit
Niche and mid in my opinion. Definitely feels like older version of a Snickers bar. (Before you come at me, though, know that I'm a freak for Mounds and Almond Joy, so you can take my words with a grain of salt.) Candy bars in general don't seem to be as popular as they were back in the 20th century, so I'm kind of surprised Baby Ruth's still around. Most of us basically only eat candy bars on Halloween, even though they're sold at every gas station and convenience store across the country.
biggreasyrhinos@reddit
They're ok, I prefer nutrageous
Duque_de_Osuna@reddit
I am not sure they are still a thing. If they are they are not common.
Practical-Ordinary-6@reddit
I would say it's a standard candy bar even if it might not be the absolutely most popular. It's when I think 98% of people will have heard of and probably a very large percent of those 98 will have tried in their life. It's definitely some people's favorite you would have no trouble finding it for sale in a store.
CosyBeluga@reddit
One of the best candybars to eat if youre hungry. That or a Payday will sit in your stomach like a brick.
ShakeWeightMyDick@reddit
Old timey. I ate very few of them growing up.
Available-Egg-2380@reddit
I haven't seen one in ages but really liked them when I was a kid
Easy_Yogurt_376@reddit
Its a old person candy but ill eat one
bizoticallyyours83@reddit
Uhh it depends
sabatoa@reddit
Baby Ruth is my favorite candy bar.
Wak3upHicks@reddit
I haven't had one in over 3 decades, nor can I even remember what they're like. I imagine because of enshitification it wouldn't resemble what I remember, anyway.
HooksNHaunts@reddit
They go great in pools.
I like them and know a few who consider them their favorite candy bar, but I prefer Zero bars so might be a bad example.
SabresBills69@reddit
Its on the candy shelves like other candy.
It falls in the nestle group with crunch, butterfinger, $100,000 bar. There us now sn ice cream equivalent in stores.
For a while you saw in uce cream aisles a snickers and Twix in thr ice cream novelty section of freezers with Popsicles, ice cream bars, Klondike, and others In recent years started to see additional candy bar ice cream such as snickers in other flavors, kitkat, 100,000 bar, butterfinger, and babyruth
pinniped90@reddit
I like them but they seem to have fallen off in popularity in the past 25 years.
There's a specialty sweet shop near me that has seasonal stuff and international stuff, but in their niche American stuff they have both Baby Ruth and Reggie bars.
BatofZion@reddit
If theyâre in the Halloween candy bag, Iâll eat them sparingly until thatâs all which is left.
IPreferDiamonds@reddit
I love Baby Ruth candy bars.
aftercloudia@reddit
i like them, but the chocolate on them now is kinda gross. i'd rather eat a chocolate covered payday instead.
PissedCaucasian@reddit
If you think Baby Ruth looked good in Goonies you really need to watch âCadyshack.â
biggcb@reddit
I'm a big fan of them.
1Negative_Person@reddit
Theyâre for sale in every gas station and grocer. I donât know who buys them. Theyâre kind of bottom tier as far as candy bars go.
goblin_hipster@reddit
I like Baby Ruth bars, but they aren't the first thing I reach for. I think most people encounter them through bags of mixed Halloween candy. They're kinda old-timey but actually delicious.
N47881@reddit
My absolute fav candy bar, hands down
1Marmalade@reddit
I think they are a decent choice here as they donât have any awful American chocolate in them. The salty, sweet, nutty bite is better than most candy here. 5/10
Riker_Omega_Three@reddit
Baby Ruth is not as popular for younger generations
But for anyone who was a kid in the 70's/80's/90's...it was a big time candy bar
I love em
workntohard@reddit
Baby Ruth bars are near top of list along with Recess Cups and Snickers and Payday. Common flavor being peanuts.
Background-Passion50@reddit
My momâs favorite still to this day. Every gift she gets we tape bite sized baby Ruthâs to her presents. Gotta hand it to her new husband, my step dad. Bought her one of those hanging, love seats for her birthday last year and rained baby Ruthâs down upon her as she sat in it. If only my Dad had done this theyâd probably still be married LMAO.
dantes_b1tch@reddit (OP)
Tell your mum this British random reddit boy says she has great taste đ
Background-Passion50@reddit
Will do đ
Phantomtastic@reddit
I hated Baby Ruth. I liked Snickers though. A Snickers bar was layered so it was easy to bite off the caramel and peanut layer and throw away the disgusting nougat.
ChoppedUnc-SF@reddit
Not as popular as before. "Babe Ruth" was already a dated reference when I was a kid (80s). I like them though!
Drew707@reddit
Supposedly Baby Ruth is named after Grover Cleveland's daughter, not the baseball player.
Phantomtastic@reddit
I hated Baby Ruth. I liked Snickers though. A Snickers bar was layered so it was easy to bite off the caramel and peanut layer and throw away the disgusting nougat.
ChoppedUnc-SF@reddit
Oh well damn that's even older. What's next? Abe links?
Low-Locksmith-6801@reddit
I never thought they were particularly goodâŚlike a cheap Snickers.
ABelleWriter@reddit
Snickers are definitely more popular here than baby ruth. Snickers is actually number 1, and baby Ruth doesn't make the top 5.
SpeechMuted@reddit
I got one at a 7-11 (convenience store) yesterday. I don't eat them often, but they were my favorite snack at the store I worked in as a teenager.
Appropriate-Food1757@reddit
I love them but they arenât as easy to find. I feel like 2-3 candy companies are everywhere and Baby Ruth is left out.
Both_Painter_9186@reddit
They arenât super common, but they seem to be in a lot of Halloween mix bags.
Honestly though, idk how commonly eaten candy bars are these days? Obviously they still exist. Do kids eat them? I feel like I have maybe 3-5 candy bars a year.
YourGuyK@reddit
Its my dad's favorite candy bar. He buys up a fun-size bag or two right after Halloween for deer hunting.
I always thought they were just a worse Snickers, especially with how bad Nestle's chocolate is, but apparently they were bought by Fererra recently, so I don't think I've had a newer one.
dantes_b1tch@reddit (OP)
Some very surprising answers here. I didn't really expect it to have the perception of being an older person chocolate bar.
Some things I'm taking away from this - I need to try a payday and US snickers đ
Really appreciate all these answers, thank you everyone đ
BreadfruitRegular631@reddit
If you want a good laugh google Caddyshack BabyRuth scene and watch it on youtube. Anyway, when I was a kid I saw BabyRuth are b-level. A level was Three Musketeers, Snickers, Mars, Receses PB cups, and a few others.
ham1917@reddit
I like Baby Ruth, but it's not my first pick for a candy bar. I'd grab a Snickers (especially with pecans) or Reese's first.
OperationStraight808@reddit
I love them and buy when I see them
PurpleB96@reddit
My favorite candy bar hands down
macoafi@reddit
They have nuts. That's a hard no for me. I object to putting solid nuts inside other food.
bangbangracer@reddit
They keep making them, so someone is buying them. Never actually seen someone eating one though.
Shadw21@reddit
They're not bad, basically a Payday covered in chocolate, though it looks like Payday came out with a 'Chocolatey Payday' at some point, which is exactly that and has apparently been more popular than Baby Ruth bars some years.
Granted, it's been years since I've really had candy bars in any amount or variety beyond holiday mini-sized treats, so I can only recollect what may not longer be true since it seems like everyone messes with their recipes/ingredients every few years these days, RIP Reese's Cups. Also RIP King sized bars(now usually split into 2 bars and called sharing sized or something) and hello 1-3lb sized bars, which are more novelty than anything else.
I'd have to say I prefer Snickers over them, historically, but neither of those have ever been my favorite candy bar.
My top candy bars over the years have been Reese's Cups(no longer, they keep changing. Their Easter Eggs were the last variation that were still decent a few years ago), Butterfingers, 3 Musketeers, and 100 Grands.
Paydays are a niche contender because they are salty-sweet with a good crunch, which just works, if that's what you're looking for in the moment.
I think I'm going to have to buy a bunch of candy bars and review them as they currently are. Some of them I know haven't had in 5+ years.
zoppaTheDim@reddit
I like them, but I wouldnât say top ten.
One thing Iâve noticed is the UK seems to be slow on the peanut train.
count_busoni@reddit
I swear they were more popular when I was a kid in the 90s. Now they are still around but you see them less and less. Baby Ruth, heath bar, and 100 grand are mid tier candies in America right now. They are past their prime but still around.
BananaMapleIceCream@reddit
I like it because my grandma liked it and would have them at her house. I would not say it was ever a popular candy bar.
jrhawk42@reddit
They are popular enough to fill shelf space, but they aren't one of the more popular candy bars. Honestly I think they're one of the better candy bars, but it's a tough market.
Also consider a payday bar which is similar but not covered in chocolate. I really like Payday bars because the salted peanuts really shine through and aren't overpowered by a layer of chocolate. I assume Europeans would like it better since they complain about everything being overly sweet in the US.
Pugilist12@reddit
Popular enough to stay on shelves for the past 40 years or more, but definitely not on the same popularity tier as the heavy hitters like snickers, Twix, etc.
MuscaMurum@reddit
The nuts tend to be stale, but I don't dislike the idea.
FreeStateOfPortland@reddit
I donât think people eat candy bars that much anymore. Despite the worldâs perception, a lot of Americans are trying to eat healthier along with teaching their kids to eat healthier. You definitely see them in the Halloween candy bags though.
ghoulthebraineater@reddit
Not to mention that shit has gotten really expensive. Since Covid I've definitely been eating better mostly because money doesn't go as far and dropping shit I don't need like candy has been the way to go. No candy, no soda, no fast food. Sucks that everything is so expensive but I've lost 30 lbs so that's cool.
dantes_b1tch@reddit (OP)
Tbh I am guilty of of that perception due to stereotyping but that's good to hear.
I think something similar happening here in the UK to, but tbh I like sweet things way too much to give up.
TooManyDraculas@reddit
They're in most stores.
Basically the same candy bar as a Snickers, and Snickers is a lot more popular. It's got an "that other brand" thing going on.
G_E_Z_O_R_A@reddit
Payday is better texture imo
seanbeedelicious@reddit
Baby Ruth is a good candy bar, but it has been outclassed by the chocolate coated Payday.
ZeldaHylia@reddit
I love them. But I love all of the not so popular candy like three musketeers.
MattieShoes@reddit
Pretty mid. It's candy so it's not like it's bad, but I think it's rare for Baby Ruth to be at the top of somebody's list.
Idiot_Actual29@reddit
I tend to see them talked about as âoldhead candyâ. More nostalgic for Gen X and earlier in my purely anecdotal experience. They definitely get strongly associated with The Goonies. I donât personally know anyone that didnât like them, though. Iâd put them in my top 3.
Yeahboyeah@reddit
"Caddyshack" kind of ruined it for everyone.
MarionberryPlus8474@reddit
Itâs kind of niche, IMO. Not sure of market share but I rarely see people buying or eating them, or their wrappers in litter.
Jojosbees@reddit
Baby Ruth is my favorite (Iâm a millennial). I used to sell them in school fundraisers in the late 1990s. They were more popular than Butterfingers but less popular than Snickers and 100 Grand. Nowadays, I only ever see them at Halloween, but itâs not really popular, like even less so than when I was a kid.
GOTaSMALL1@reddit
Nobody gonna make a Caddy Shack joke huh?
ndubitably@reddit
Small ones still show up in Halloween candy and seem to be generally well-received.
However,I haven't seen anyone purchase a Baby Ruth full size candy bar in 30 years.
dantes_b1tch@reddit (OP)
I had 4 full sized ones delivered yesterday đ
TsundereLoliDragon@reddit
See if you can get the chocolate covered Payday. These are probably even better.

Oooo thank you I'll see if I can get them. We have a UK version of Reese's here (I assume its a uk and not imported version)
ndubitably@reddit
So that's how they're avoiding my detection!
bansheesho@reddit
It's my favorite candy bar. I wouldn't say anywhere near as popular as a snickers or twix or kitkat though.

Vegetable_Sample7384@reddit
When I was a kid in the 90s they seemed to be a lot more popular and available. I hardly see them anymore. Iâm with everyone else, Iâd eat them if given to me, but if I had a choice I usually picked something else.
AnastasiusDicorus@reddit
baby ruth is about the same as snickers without all the nougat. Pretty premium candy bar.
andmen2015@reddit
I liked them a little and would eat them if I was given one, but I wouldn't buy them. Now I wouldn't eat them because to me the chocolate coating has a waxy texture to it that's a turn off.
kepler16bee@reddit
It's definitely not that popular in the US. However amongst the usual similar-ish candy bars - Milky Way, Snickers etc, it's my fave! It's nice actually because when people have candy at work there's always some left for me and the other coworker who likes them.

Yes
WashuOtaku@reddit
Baby Ruth bars are rare; not popular. You find them in stores that focus on confectionery items.
LopsidedGrapefruit11@reddit
Theyâre everywhere in SoCA, so itâs probably a regional deal. I still wouldnât say they are super popular, but I donât think people buy as many candy bars period as they did in the 80s.
GhostFaceRiddler@reddit
And every gas station in the United States. You don't need to go to a speciality store to buy a baby ruth.
SallyAmazeballs@reddit
That has to vary regionally, because you can buy them at any gas station here with a decent candy bar section. They're not hard to find at all.Â
clearliquidclearjar@reddit
You'd find them in any gas station or convenience store.
Rumhead1@reddit
I would put it on par with Milky Way. Most people would take Snickers over either.
Gunther482@reddit
Coconut seems to be one of those things that people either love or hate (licorice would be another example) so it comes down to if they like coconut or not.
Fun-Dragonfly-4166@reddit

Kazyctn@reddit
Itâs basically an off-brand Snickers. All the same ingredients, yet somehow a lot less flavor. Theyâre fine, but you rarely see people eating them outside of handouts on Halloween.
Comfortable-Race-547@reddit
Used to be my 3rd favorite candy, not that i eat much.Â
shestzushihtsu@reddit
They're ok, but mainly seen around halloween. I prefer payday's. Those are damn good! Snickers are too yucky for my taste
giraflor@reddit
As a kid, I loved them and Snickers. Now, I find them both too sweet. Occasionally, I eat one of the miniatures ones at Halloween and instantly regret it.
BidRevolutionary945@reddit
I used to love them. You don't hear a lot of people mentioning Baby Ruths as their fave candy anymore. Americans seem to prefer Snickers, Milky Way, Reeses or gourmet stuff like Ghirardelli.

They were always left over after HalloweenÂ
I've come to like them a lot more now that I'm older, which definitely isn't helping their image as a candy bar for old people
DrMindbendersMonocle@reddit
You can buy them at most places that would sell candy like grocery or convienence stores like 7-11. They are well known and pretty popular.
ITrCool@reddit
Theyâre ok. Iâm more of a Snickers guy if I want a peanut chocolate bar.
Automatic-Effect-252@reddit

Beeron55@reddit
I think they are a common type of chocolate bar. I see them at every convenience/gas station. The only time I ever eat one though is when I raid my kidâs Halloween candy. I canât really say I know anyone who likes them a lot. If I was to get a chocolate bar Iâd get snickers bar or payday.
