Luxury bunkers owned by billionaires

I’m obsessed with why billionaires are building underground bunkers. Do they know something we don’t? Why are they building what looks like a luxury Airbnb but underground
I’ve read a lot of Reddit posts and articles about how people like Reid Hoffman and Mark Zuckerberg are building private underground shelters. Sometimes it honestly feels like they’re quietly preparing for something
Reid Hoffman has reportedly been building bunkers across multiple countries specifically because he's preparing for an event that might destroy the world. He’s focused on New Zealand, which is interesting because a lot of billionaires are choosing places like New Zealand to build their bunkers.
That’s also why I got really curious. When I went to New Zealand, I open bunkersapp just to see if theres a bunkers nearby, I don’t even know why I did that maybe I’m just weird but I like seeing where these bunkers are and imagining what they look like in real life
There have been a few maps and floor plan leaks about Zuckerberg’s compound in Hawaii, and it’s honestly insane. He reportedly has his own underground space with advanced air filtration systems, private energy supply, reinforced walls, and secure entry points. Some reports say these kinds of bunkers can have multiple underground levels, hidden access tunnels, and even blast-resistant doors.
when you actually look into billionaire bunkers, It’s not just a bunker, it’s like a full setup underground. Pools, gyms, medical rooms, fully stocked kitchens, their own water systems, even hydroponic farms so they can grow food. Some even have fake windows that simulate sunlight, entertainment rooms like cinemas or game areas, and enough supplies to last for years without going outside.
Altruistic_Grocery81@reddit
They can do all they want, but my money’s on their private security offing them when the time comes.
cperrius@reddit
When you have that much money you can afford to hedge against even highly unlikely risk scenarios. It doesn't mean they know something is coming.
Spookytuke@reddit
They have to spend their money on something
virtualadept@reddit
GPS coordinates would be nice.
fleetingrestraint@reddit
Gets me excited thinking about figuring out how the water and air supply works in there. Wonder how easy it is to make some thermite. And I’m not even mad. That just happens automatically. Really don’t know how they think they could stop motivated people.
virtualadept@reddit
It's very easy to make, even if all you have is a high school chemistry textbook.
Ultimaya@reddit
barracade the entrance and fill the air intakes with cement, then simply wait.
Kiss_of_Cultural@reddit
Collapse is imminent.
Some of them are accelerationists, actively tipping the scale for a faster collapse, because they think they will be insulated, and enough poors will die that climate will reset and they won’t have to stay down there for long.
They forget that bunkers need vents. And can be found.
ConsiderationSea1347@reddit
An email from Peter Theil to Epstein surfaced that still haunts me months after reading it. He talks about how REAL wealth will come when society collapses and the world is split into a bunch of city states run by billionaires like feudal lords and we are their servants and slaves.
These are the people that run our world. They have a clear agenda and march towards it every day and we still aren’t fighting back.
You don’t hate billionaires enough.
Kiss_of_Cultural@reddit
Naw, right there with you.
I’ve read entirely too much about their plans for Network States, crypto is them funneling money to their projects. They think they are so smart and nothing can hurt their plans. They are already buying up land all over the place. Collapse just helps separate land from its current owners.
My friends said I was crazy when I sold my city home and bought a house and some acreage way the hell in the middle of nowhere to start a homestead. This is me staking my claim to an ounce of dignity during the collapse, establishing a safe haven for friends, family, and like minded folks in the end. I’m not wrong, I’m just early. But not early enough IMO
LostInAvocado@reddit
What are property rights, after collapse? Will they be able to defend all the land they’re buying?
Kiss_of_Cultural@reddit
They suffer immense hubris and believe the power they wield in their hoarded wealth will still carry value, allowing them to pay and control security or keep robot security. It’s all ridiculous.
Carbonatite@reddit
I'm not religious, but if I was, I would believe that Peter Thiel is one of the horsemen of the apocalypse. He is almost supernaturally evil.
rnobgyn@reddit
Yeah imo they’re developing ai so they can have robots take care of them and attack any other humans that approach. These people are actively trying to kill us, every day, yet people still pretend it’s all chill and might as well keep going to work.
Ok_Task_4135@reddit
The rich needed the poors for all of human history, but in the upcoming years once automation and A.I. become capable of taking every human job, the rich won't need us, they don't want us, and they have the means to get rid of us.
SirRobinRanAwayAway@reddit
I'd like to see chatgpt unclog the bunker toilets, cook several meals a day with canned food, and go outside the bunker to fix the solar panels
Ok_Task_4135@reddit
I don't know about solar panels, but I have already seen videos of robots cleaning toilets and cooking meals. Automation and A.I. is getting better every year. Governments and big corporations aren't investing trillions of dollars on these new technologies for nothing. The only reason that we are still here is because automation and A.I aren't fully capable of replacing us, yet.

Malkuno@reddit
They also forget that bunkers need Doors that can be opened if they ever wish to leave.... So thats stopping people from felling some trees at the entrance & then covering those trees in cement?
ahhhimamonfire@reddit
That's why they're going all in on AI and robotics technology, they'll have robo dog auto turrets tripping all over themselves (literally lol) to protect their shitty tombsday bunkers
Topiconerre@reddit
Sounds like a lot of work. Just weld them shut.
jose_ole@reddit
With what electricity in collapse?
Only_Agency3747@reddit
2 batteries, 2 sets of jumper cables and a welding rod. We used to use them all the time when offroading in Northern Aus for dodgy track side repairs.
jose_ole@reddit
Seems like a lot of extra work to go around sealing doors when that may come in handy for like surviving, but what the fuck do I know?
Economy_Wall8524@reddit
I mean you could unseal them too after they died. You have the resources at that point.
Topiconerre@reddit
An oxy-acetylene torch does not require electricity.
jose_ole@reddit
That stuff just gonna be abundant enough to go around sealing up bunkers?
times_a_changing@reddit
There are so many ways to generate electricity at a scale enough to operate power tools
breadmaster90@reddit
Small generators will still exist after collapse

Billionaires are mostly at least middle aged, they might not care that much about leaving the bunker, just living a cozy life till the end.
Malkuno@reddit
If their plans aren't to leave the bunker, then why not cycle back to this?
I don't think their lives would be particularity cozy if someone found one of their bunker's above ground vents & decided to spend their time pumping a constant stream of Fart Spray into their ventilation system.
Can't imagine they would want to stay inside if the entire bunker was permeated by a high concentration Liquid ass or Fragrance #2. Hell it could probably be done with a single washcloth soaked in the stuff, occasionally swapped out with a new scent so they don't get too used to it.
pegaunisusicorn@reddit
so... false flag armageddon so we don't need guillotines?
YellowB@reddit
Just park a few cars in the front
Jovan_Knight005@reddit
Those ventilation systems can be disrupted at any time.
br8indr8in@reddit
They also forget the doors build them (kmow where they are) and protect them (security guards) so they have zero actual protection by building these. I read an Atlantic article years ago about 5 billionaires who hired a renowned futurist to ask him how to control people once money means nothing. Their ideas were shock collars and elaborate locks and the guy told them they have no chance.
Parking_Sky9709@reddit
https://rushkoff.com/books/survival-of-the-richest.html
Escape Fantasies of the Tech Billionaires
Douglas Rushkoff was invited to speak to a group of the world's wealthiest people about "the future of technology." When he arrived, however, he found himself in a room answering five urgent questions from five extraordinarily powerful men. Each question was the same, really: How do I survive what's coming?
Parsimile@reddit
It was an excerpt from a book by Douglas Rushkoff, printed in The Guardian newspaper in 2022:
“This single question occupied us for the rest of the hour. They knew armed guards would be required to protect their compounds from raiders as well as angry mobs. One had already secured a dozen Navy Seals to make their way to his compound if he gave them the right cue. But how would he pay the guards once even his crypto was worthless? What would stop the guards from eventually choosing their own leader?
The billionaires considered using special combination locks on the food supply that only they knew. Or making guards wear disciplinary collars of some kind in return for their survival. Or maybe building robots to serve as guards and workers – if that technology could be developed “in time”.”
https://www.theguardian.com/news/2022/sep/04/super-rich-prepper-bunkers-apocalypse-survival-richest-rushkoff
br8indr8in@reddit
Ah thank you!
Carbonatite@reddit
Imagine thinking that combination locks and shock collars would phase a hardened special operations veteran. Those guys get tortured as part of their training; they are subjected to incredibly harsh and painful situations to ensure they can complete a mission with a cool head even if they're injured and not reveal anything if they're caught and interrogated by enemy forces. They're trained to deal with like, North Korean intel agencies torturing them for information or being captured by insurgents who will behead them on camera. All that shit makes any threats from a paunchy middle aged tech bro seem practically quaint in comparison.

Aaand this is where religion comes in for cult leaders. If hungry peasants know you are a simple human like they are and just hoarding resources, they will try and take them. If they believe you are a divine god they will starve themselves willingly.
ramdom-ink@reddit
They may also forget that there are 400+ nuclear reactors requiring cooling, nuclear winters that can last decades, climate anomalies so inhospitable that it will take millennia to re-correct, marauding gangs of desperate, armed survivors searching for asylum, and a host of other threats both ecological and catastrophic no matter how many supplies one has. One thinks they haven’t thought this all the way through. But go ahead, bro-lillionaires, feel as secure as your money will pay for now, but the cost will be just as much even if it’s 10 years later.
MTVregime@reddit
They're just creating bunkers for their strongest and smartest security teams. No way any post military mercs have amy reason to keep sociopathic self righteous nerds who think they will get to be the bosses around.

giddy-girly-banana@reddit
Money would be worthless at that point anyways.
theimmortalgoon@reddit
There was a guy I saw on Reddit who claimed to be involved with the security of a billionaire and, according to this unverified claim, the security team had already worked out how they’d execute the billionaire and put their own families in the bunkers if the need arose.
And I do believe it, at least the sentiment. What would you do with a paycheck after the fall?
Carbonatite@reddit
That's actually vaguely comforting to read. That in the end their wealth won't save them and their delusions of grandeur will be shattered.

NoFood2149@reddit
they forget that by the time it is safe to leave their bunkers, the surviving humans will have adapted and learned how to live on the surface and created their own power structures, and probably will not accept the return of the billionaires to power
damageEUNE@reddit
Billionaires can buy a bunker or two without caring about the cost. Wouldn't you have a bunker fi you were a billionaire? It's literally one of the first things you should get for your security. Why does these need to be some hidden knowledge involved? Why would you not have a bunker if you could choose to have one?
Carbonatite@reddit
If I had billionaire bunker money I would probably try to spend it on research and humanitarian efforts to improve the world so that nobody would need a bunker. But that attitude is probably mutually exclusive with the type of personality one would have to have to hoard such wealth in the first place.
uhmyeahwellok@reddit
I think this is why we aren’t a billionaires: they focus squarely on what is within their control and they know that fixing the world isn’t, while building a bunker is. Not defending billionaires by the way, I’m still on board with your approach over theirs.
Carbonatite@reddit
Fixing the world is a lot more in their control than us plebians. They can donate a midsized university's entire endowment carbon capture research and fund regenerative agriculture start-ups and still have enough left over to pay every school lunch debt in America.
uhmyeahwellok@reddit
Totally agreed. They’re a plague for the masses. How can it be so hard to get rid of them? Power works in mysterious ways and I guess that mastered the mystery…
the_pwnererXx@reddit
Well, you can do that and still buy the bunker. Buying a bunker for 0.01% of your networth is just a pragmatic decision

>Do they know something we don’t?
Yes, they do. It’s that collapse is imminent, inevitable, and incendiary. The wealthy keep the stupid manipulated and distracted with identity politics and other non-issues to the point that it never even crosses most peoples’ minds that our way of life is fundamentally flawed and doomed.
The bunkers, however, are just palliative care for the ultra wealthy. I know I wouldn’t be happy living my remaining years underground and constantly worried about invaders or my own staff possibly forming a coup against me. What kind of life is that? I’d rather be dead.
bw147@reddit
They can predict collapse but can't predict their vents getting filled up w concrete
KlicknKlack@reddit
They aren't predicting anything. If you really read into what they all believe, it really is just another form of scientology. These billionaires read sci-fi dystopian books and thought they 100% going to happen, or they read someone elses analysis of said sci-fi book.
It really is absurd. They aren't some genius 1 in a billion type minds. They are just really good car salesmen. Like take Elon Musk, he has never really built or invented anything. But man can he sell people stock.
HeartsOfDarkness@reddit
This is a good take. These people don't have much more information than the average person can access, but they do have the means to hedge against extreme outcomes by building bunkers/compounds.
There is no deep-state or billionaire secret information about collapse events.
WombatusMighty@reddit
You are spot on. These billionaires aren't the genius people like to believe, they are of average intelligence and only became rich because they got lucky, which is rare, or like most billionaires their families were already rich.
renter-pond@reddit
Yeah I think some of this is just people making money by selling bunkers. There's no guarantee they won't break down in some way. If they don't break, there are so many people who work for these billionaires who have knowledge of the bunkers. Why would they just allow the soft billionaires to use them and not push them out? The majority of their relationships are transactional, people don't actually care about them.
Uncommented-Code@reddit
I think the average billionaire is about as dumb as the average person tbh. Well not really, but I assume that most of them are pretty dumb based on what they talk about and based on what they think.
And give the average person unlimited funds and I'm sure they would quickly get the idea to build a bunker or arche to prepare for catastrophe, like they saw in 2012, moonfall or Greenland (god I love stupid disaster movies).

I used to confused why people in this sub keeps echoing the same thing. Talking about collapse in the future tense.
And then I realize that most Redditors have cushy lives in comfort and ease. They have paying jobs, in AC temp-controlled rooms and cars, buying gadgetry and other luxuries. I mean, people are getting fat instead of starving... and they complain about too much food.
And it's then I accepted the fact that collapse really is unfair. It's slow and boring. Much so, that people in this sub itself are not aware that collapse is already here, have been for a long time.
These people are just buffered from the effects of the already ongoing collapse that they refer to it in the future tense.
People in this sub live a life of privilege.
Zen_Bonsai@reddit
Privilege or inability to accept whats happening.
I get the cope. It's hard
cyberphlash@reddit
This is the real unsolvable med-long run problem for these billionaires. Once you invite people into your living space (even offering to take in and protect the families of your security forces, for instance - so security is protecting their own kids as much as you) - if they decide to work against you, it's pretty hard to stop a dedicated person bent on getting a mutiny done. Even if you threaten that they'll die too, they don't have anything to lose because they're going to die if the mutiny fails.
melbourne3k@reddit
Something something neuralink.
runningraleigh@reddit
Imagine they perfected it to the point of having powers like The Mule in Foundation.
runningraleigh@reddit
You're not devious enough, my friend. People will sacrifice themselves for a cause, they may even rationalize sacrificing their own family, but the old Roman method of decimation works.
You fuck up? You don't die. Your family doesn't die. We just pick 10% randomly from your co-workers and their families to die. Then you have to live with your co-workers hating you and your family forever.
There's still the crazy vigilante out there who would do it anyways. That's why they do intense psychological testing to weed out the Rambos.
cyberphlash@reddit
How does that work in a billionaire's (or multi-billionaires' together) complex where you have a few extraordinarily wealthy people/families surrounded by a relatively small group (dozens, low hundreds?) of security people or servants? Maybe the Zuckerberg bunker is big, but how many people really fit in it for 6-24 months? Killing 10% of the 50 people around you isn't a recipe for success with a small group living in a confined space.
And sure, these people were rich (mostly on paper) before disaster struck, , but maybe not so much in the real world. What are you even going to pay your security forces with over a period of months or years if the situation is dire enough to stay down in a bunker for months or years? It's all pretty precarious no matter, probably more so with the fewer number of people you have in your bunker.
runningraleigh@reddit
This is what the backup bunkers are for.
Cybertronian10@reddit
And how are they going to travel between those bunkers in a hypothetical apocalypse scenario?
runningraleigh@reddit
Hidden tunnels, clearly.
Edward_The_Thief@reddit
They're investing in automated security systems to avoid that scenario.
Carbonatite@reddit
Their AI can't even reliably draw the correct number of fingers on a human hand, let along navigate the rapidly changing complex interpersonal dynamics of such a situation.
Those security measures are as likely to accidentally kill off their billionaire creator as they are to kill any mutineers.
Edward_The_Thief@reddit
I disagree. It's highly plausible that billionaires will have fully integrated and competent automated security systems within twenty years, eliminating the need for violent mercenaries to protect them.
MTVregime@reddit
Where is the energy coming from to keep these robots and ai powered?
vlntly_peaceful@reddit
Way too complicated. Robot dogs with chip scanners. Everyone with a chip gets to live, the rest gets a bullet.
Carbonatite@reddit
But will the billionaires have successfully killed off the millions of people with the tech knowledge to hack those systems, or the military personnel with access to drones and ordinance?
Edward_The_Thief@reddit
They will have automated security forces regardless of whether they have killed off such threats or not.
Carbonatite@reddit
And those forces aren't some magical supervillain comic book technology. They were built by humans, they can be sabotaged by humans.
Edward_The_Thief@reddit
No doubt. They're still going to go forward with automated security. They have no choice because they know humans will betray them at the soonest chance.
KennyMoose32@reddit
There’s got to be an air vent on these bunkers
Doesn’t take a genius or a super soldier to cover said air vent
Carbonatite@reddit
Exactly.
It is absurd how many people are ascribing supernatural powers to these assholes just because they have money. No system is foolproof. Air vents are blockable. Electronics are hackable. The US military industrial complex was held at bay for years by Vietnamese rice farmers and illiterate Afghan goatherds. And people like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg are hardly in possession of even a fraction of the resources of a major military.

Kiss_of_Cultural@reddit
That’s what AI is for. There was a conversation published by a bunker company that one billionaire asked “how will we keep staff and security in line? Won’t they want to return to their families? Can we try shock collars?” This is why they are trying SO hard to fetch AI into gen AI that can be their servants.

Yes, that's from Douglas Rushkoff's infamous 2022 article for The Guardian:

ComicCon@reddit
I’ve always thought it was awfully convenient for Rushkoff that he just happened to remember and write about this experience for the first time right when his book on cooperation and building a better society was about to come out.
Fr000k@reddit
Yes, he rewrote this text several times. 🫠 I think the first version is from 2018, in which he writes that it was ‘last year’. Whether all of that is true and actually happened that way? We can’t say for sure. Here is the 2018 version. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/jul/23/tech-industry-wealth-futurism-transhumanism-singularity
ComicCon@reddit
Yeah, the first version is the medium post before Team Human comes out. Then he reworked it for Survival of the Richest a couple years later. My theory has always been that some version of it happened, maybe he was at a dinner party or something and a similar conversation happened. But I think he punched it up with the secret meeting and ominous billionaires grilling him to make it read better.
This article has actually been something of a bug bear for me over the years, and I think the strongest piece of evidence that it didn’t happen exactly as written is - why Rushkoff? Rushkoff at the time this meeting took place was best known for his writing on cyberpunk and digital culture. Not exactly the kind of person I’d go to if I had questions about collapse and behavior.

We should lock them all in their bunkers now and pour cement down the air vents.

semisolidwhale@reddit
It's funny that they're unwilling to consider that option even when posed as a solution fully focused on their own self interest. Let them have their bunkers, seal them into their tombs, and let them die just like the rest of humanity they believed they thought they were better than.
Sovos@reddit
I'm still doubtful any of these would work.
If the bunker is cut off from power, what's going to power the AI and all the other internal equipment? (HVAC, lighting, refrigeration, etc.)
Wind and solar would need to be external and could be destroyed. Hydro and nuclear need a steady water supply, which can be blocked. Geothermal would be massive and still need to let the heat escape somewhere. You'd need a small town/city for the trained personnel to operate it, then you need more support people for those people.
It would make more sense to just make a remote, fortified, self-sufficient town at that point.
These bunkers just seem like a poorly thought through self-soothing method for the billionaires to hold the weak illusion that they'll be able to escape the consequences of their actions.
Candid-Mycologist539@reddit
The bunker just needs to hold out long enough until one is rescued.
Think about past revolutions.
French aristocracy and Russian aristocracy found sanctuary in Britain...and most of them escaped with $$$$$$$. And if not wealth, their connections of "I'm (French) aristocracy and you're (British) aristocracy. Let's do some business together!"
Upper class Chinese escaped to Taiwan similarly.
These business connections would be more likely today due to the international business ties today's billionaires have, as well as past links to exclusive boarding schools, college experiences, and high end charity events. "We both attended Wharton, after all!"
The aristocracy that was caught quickly or caught unaware did not survive. If these billionaires have learned from the past, the bunker only needs to be strong enough or hidden enough until the 1% can be extracted to a more stable situation; or until unrest has quieted enough that negotiation for their amnesty is possible.

But in this case the collapse is going to happen worldwide. When we get to the point of cracking billionaire bunkers its doubtful there will be more then city size nation states competing with one another. There will be no where to run.
Candid-Mycologist539@reddit
Collapse never happens all at the same place all at one and to the same degree.
There will be bad places to be and worse places to be. This is why so many billionaires have hideyholes in New Zealand. They believe it will be a less bad place to be.
Consider again the aristocracies of France and Russia. They each had unquestioned power in their selective home countries.
Where did they flee? Britain. Home of the Magna Carta. Habeas Corpus. Limits on the king's power. Protection from cruel & unusual punishment.
...and a House of COMMONS??????
It's like living with savages! Indeed! /s
(FTR: France and Russia each had a version of the House of Commons, but each had very little power).
Billionaires, if they are smart, will use the bunkers until the threat blows over. (They think the army will impose martial law, dispatch troublemakers postmaster, and allow them to return to their position on top of the heap).
When it becomes apparent that that will not happen, they will communicate with and promise anything to their friends in other countries to organize an extraction.
Their friends, also being rich and powerful, will send another country's version of Navy Seals to rescue the Billionaire and whoever he/she has on the list (maybe family), and ONLY them. Anyone who interferes or thinks they are going along (the mistress, the nanny, children of security forces) will be eliminated from the extraction.
6rwoods@reddit
You’re contradicting yourself… if the collapse is localised in the USA (where most of these billionaires live), but it’s not happening in other places where their billionaire friends live, what is the point in going all the way to New Zealand to hide in a bunker for weeks/months instead of just going directly to another destination that isn’t collapsing? What’s stopping them from just hanging out at a private island in the Caribbean or their London house or a hotel in Tokyo or a super yacht on international waters in the meantime, if some/all of those other options are still available to them?
The comparison to aristocrats falls short because those aristocrats never did hide in bunkers or anything comparable, they just went directly to another “normal” destination and then either made a new life there or found a more permanent alternative later.
No, the only way hiding in a bunker on the other side of the word makes sense is if they believe the collapse is global in scale (or could rapidly become global) so that their normal lives cannot function anywhere anymore. It’s a last resort, not a “holiday resort”.
Candid-Mycologist539@reddit
How long did the fall of the Western half of the Roman Empire take?
The lesson is that it didn't happen everywhere all at once immediately.
6rwoods@reddit
That does nothing to contradict what I said, only what you said, which was my point in the first place. If the collapse happens in stages and one place is affected first, and since you are saying that you think the rich people from that one place would seek to flee to places that have not been affected yet, then it makes no sense to make a 'layover' in a whole ass bunker in the middle of nowhere instead of moving directly to one of those other places that haven't been affected yet. It is only once those other places have ALSO been affected that a bunker in NZ will start feeling like the best -- or only -- option for survival.

Nah. Give the strong men enough power, but not the top power. Itll be more akin to kings, not feudal lords. There will be coups, but its all a cycle of power, greed.. human nature
BabadookishOnions@reddit
The thung about feudal lords is that their power depended on the resources in their immediate area, the flow of resources through their area, or services provided in their area. Remote bunkers are essentially useless for this because they are intentionally located away from all the resources a feudal lord would be controlling and distributing

That works great until you're in it. Maintaining loyalty of the people who maintain your bunker is a big unsolved problem that a lot of these people are deeply worried about
runningraleigh@reddit
Why wouldn't it be the same way all protection rackets work? "You work for me and your family will be taken care of. You betray me, and your family will be 'taken care of.'"
IEnjoyFancyHats@reddit
The smaller the population, the harder it is to maintain obedience that way. What, you're gonna kill the only guy in there who can maintain your filtration system? The one who manages and prepares your food? Usually you can just replace them, but you can't here.
There are no scabs in a bunker.
runningraleigh@reddit
I posted this elsewhere on the thread about using the Roman method of decimation. I think that way, in which you don't kill the offender but instead make them subject to intense hatred by their peers...that's more effective.
IEnjoyFancyHats@reddit
Again, that's just not feasible on the scale of a bunker. You can get away with that maybe once before you get mass mutiny, you run out of leverage, or you're forced to sacrifice another critical expert.
You gotta recognize that these people are paranoid enough to only have minimal staffing for what they need. More people means more chances to lose your control over the population, which ironically makes them more vulnerable to that population
runningraleigh@reddit
This is why they would have other sacrificial bunkers full of people who have no idea what their ultimate plan is: they become backfill, and the people in the original bunker have no idea how many backfill bunkers of unaware people might exist.

If I were such a rich prick, I'd employ a whole staff of psychologists to evaluate my peons and their families, and make triply sure that only those with utmost loyalty even get near my retreat.
I'd offer them and their families a place in my bunker, and therefore a chance of survival, in exchange for their loyal services. Any betrayal by them would put their families on the line.
Then, if I were such a rich prick, I'd install remote biometric locks for everything, with distress recognition. Basically, the pantry can only be opened as long as I am alive, well and willing. I'd make sure that nothing goes without me, and that everyone knows it. I'd link a fucking bomb to my heatbeat and tell no one of it as my last and final spite measure.
And other than that, I'd employ common sense and adhere to the Evil Overlord List where applicable. I'd actually treat my staff well because it would be self-detrimental to not do so. Don't give them a reason to rebel, and they won't. After all, they just want to survive too.
deepasleep@reddit

Because the rich person controls all the resources.
Rhoubbhe@reddit
Not in an environment where all their resources, most digital money, are worthless. In collapse, we revert more to biology, and the toughest primate will take over the troop.
That isn't Mark Zuckerberg or Peter Thiel, it will be Captain Chad and Segeant Jamal, who will put a bullet in his head to bang his wife and daughters.
We are still primates in the end.
Total_Examination297@reddit
Whoever goes into the collapse controlling the resources, is the one most likely to maintain control. This is reverse of how society was built, we don't go back to the way it was, at least not for awhile.
Rhoubbhe@reddit
You don't control the resources in collapse from a bunker. Our civilization is so technical, it will get messy fast in collapse due to people starving and plentiful firearms in the United States.
Once the federal government loses control, billionaires are finished, their power is gone.
Whoever controls the local milita controls the resources, which is likely Captain Chad and Sergent Jamal, who will put a bullet in the billionaire's head....
Total_Examination297@reddit
Agreed to disagree. Collapse is slow and grueling, but i agree it will be messy and full of death. I would think billionaires would be amassing their own armies and militias during it all, utilizing their leverage over the remaining resources and systems they still control.
Carbonatite@reddit
Rich people are just as incompatible with the ammunition in a disgruntled security employee's firearm as everyone else.
Total_Examination297@reddit
Do you get how society works? Why do rich people control resources now? It'll be the same if shtf
Carbonatite@reddit
In a true apocalyptic situation, money becomes worthless. Elon's 12 digit bank account won't mean shit when actual resources - food, clean water, medicine - are the only things between life and death. Being able to promise imaginary resources to purchase antibiotics is meaningless if the electrical grid is collapsed and half of wall street has already burned down. The person who has possession of the antibiotics is the one in charge, not the person with the biggest account balance
Total_Examination297@reddit
No shit, and who will be in control of said resources?
Carbonatite@reddit
Hospitals, warehouses, pharmacies, grocery stores, etc. If the billionaire is cowering in his bunker he's not really in possession of anything outside of it, is he?
Total_Examination297@reddit
Systems. Is the billionaire himself/herself guarding these buildings now? Why don't people seize them now? Also, in a collapse, they don't need all those decentralized buildings and systems, they'll have their own isolated cities. Thats the reason for the big push with 'freedom cities'
Carbonatite@reddit
So then the rest of us can just move on and ignore those assholes. They can't hoard literally every calorie and medical item and water treatment device on the planet in one of those cities - the rest of humanity can just embrace collectivism and wait for the billionaires' wastewater treatment systems and air handlers to break down. We're talking maybe a couple dozen people per bunker, not millions.
People don't seize those things now because they have access to those things now. Why go to prison trying to seize a warehouse when you can just go to the grocery store? Use your common sense and stop assigning magical supervillain powers to these greedy fucks. They're not indefatigable comic book antagonists with imaginary superhuman strength and alien cyborg armies, they're human beings.
Total_Examination297@reddit
I am using my common sense. People will ignore these Bunker billionaires in a collapse, because they won't have access to them or their systems. But, if tthere's a collapse, its because its become very difficult to farm, roam, find fresh water. So, people can and will embrace collectivism, but a lot of people will die trying. Like a lot a lot. And the billionaire with their elaborate systems, robots, and basically enslaved humans, will survive and control what they can.
Carbonatite@reddit
They can't enslave anyone beyond the immediate vicinity of their defense systems. People will just leave. Even if they have some kind of prison camp with forced laborers, they can tunnel out. They only have as many "slaves" as they're able to lock into the bunker.
Total_Examination297@reddit
Again, if there's a collapse, being on the outside will basically be a death certificate.
Carbonatite@reddit
Why? Do you think they'll be able to control access to grocery stores, warehouses, ag infrastructure, abandoned hospitals, etc. in the continental US from their New Zealand bunker? Of course not.
A lot of people will die but it's not like all those things magically disappear into the ether - they'll still be accessible for anyone who is able to get to them. No billionaire is going to be able to control global resource distribution in such a situation; the people around those warehouses in Kansas or whatever can just ignore their commands.
Total_Examination297@reddit
In the short term you are correct. But once all those places are looted? And in a collapse there is no more resource distribution systems, hence the word collapse.
Carbonatite@reddit
It's almost like humans have known about agriculture for like 10,000 years.
Total_Examination297@reddit
The reason for a collapse would be that agriculture is also failing. And you think the average person knows fuck all about growing their own food? Or growing their own food in weather that is extremely difficult?
Carbonatite@reddit
Commercial industrial ag that relies on monoculture is failing. Most of human history did not rely on that kind of industry.
The farmers aren't going to be magically raptured away - are you aware that people are capable of learning new concepts when taught by experts who posess knowledge and experiences about those concepts? You can even go to the half-burnt local library in your apocalypse scenario and dig up some books on regenerative agriculture methods. Does collapse in your mind also magically turn every human on the planet illiterate?
Total_Examination297@reddit
EXTREME WEATHER, HOT, DRY, GOOD LUCK GROWING FOOD. And this is before there's a collapse. I dont think in terms of an apocalypse, collapse is slow, grueling, over many many years. Most of human history relied on decent and predictable weather. And when there were bad droughts and heatwaves, crops failed, people died. I dont think most people could learn to grow their own food, especially in a constant state of drought and heat. Keep responding, but I gotta be done with this topic.
Total_Examination297@reddit
I think the collapse will be slow and grueling. Most likely these bunkers will be for those weather events that are really difficult unless you have underground shelter. And more likely they have them for nuclear fallout, because ww3 seems right around the corner

flactulantmonkey@reddit
I believe the idea is that at that point, other assets become de facto currency (water, food, safe shelter, whatever resources you have tucked away, weapons, etc) and the well prepped billionaire controls access.
Before the zillion answers, I understand the weak points of this plan. But nonetheless, I believe that is more or less the plan.
vlntly_peaceful@reddit
They are gambling that the human race doesn't have enough agency to harm them physically (at least not in the short term and the places they are building), and it seems like they are winning.
As for the commodities, unfortunately they are still human and adaptable. The will just (have to) live with less, but robotic hydrofarms and rainwater collection can go a long way. It's no coincidence they are building in New Zealand and Hawaii, two places with few people and a lot of rainfall.
fedexyourheadinabox@reddit

Ok-Secretary455@reddit
You tell staff they can bring immediate family with them and their can stay in a seperate wing. Air into the bunker is tied to a dead man switch worn by the billionaire. So if his heart stops so does air. That way no one gets the bright idea to kill anyone
Slick424@reddit

No reason to hit early warning if you are second striking. It'll be disabled when you glass all the power and industrial base anyway.
anothernic@reddit
Depends heavily on how much interception and intercept-ability you expect. Knocking out radar arrays probably improves those odds significantly. Hell if I know, I can barely build an Estes.
SomeRandomGuydotdot@reddit
I've heard that argument, but I'm pretty sure the second strike laydown occurs simultaneously (Or is at least planned to).

Total_Examination297@reddit

The bunkers are the ones with the finite ammo supply. The people outside can make more.
Vietnamese rice farmers and illiterate Afghan goatherds managed to keep armies with full access to the US military industrial complex supply chain at bay for years. The bunker dwellers will have no such logistical abundance.
The attackers ran out of bullets? They can melt lead and make more, or just make incendiary devices out of various petrochemicals and oxidizers.

Lot of folks seem convinced of human extinction in their lifetime. It's a comforting thought, that it's already over, nothing can be done, and their death is certain. It's easier than thinking that things are just going to get worse, life will become harder, some people will starve and others will wish they had. 10000 years is the reign of mushrooms, if the climate stabilizes, or still completely sterile other than a couple isolated pockets if it doesn't stabilize.
I dont understand. Do people understand what climate change means or is it one of those things you always think you understand, but the more you learn, the more you realize you really didn't know?
The climate changing means the life that's adapted to the climate we left and are moving ever further from doesn't have an ecological niche in 10000 years. That's all life on earth; all of it has been here and is in the way because everything humanity really knows is on earth, alive and dependent on the stable, cool, low carbon climate from before.
No living thing that the average person knows about in the world can adapt to the change at the rate it's going. If youre more than 25, you've experienced enough of a change in the climate, you've noticed something. This is a planet. Planets don't change. They really don't. My bet is the atmosphere on planets that are like storms of metal or whatever have the same atmosphere they did 100 years ago.
Every planet in the galaxy that isnt about to reset its climate, has some kind of stability of the atmosphere over time because how would it change? It's a planet? Change happens over a super long time on a planet. Life grew our atmospheric oxygen, and that's a whole 20% of it. That took millions of years... I actually forget how long, but the point is that the atmosphere has no capacity to change... unless you poke a straw through time, reach into the past, find a potent component of the atmosphere in a stable form "oh, this is where all that life and heat that used to fill the planet is! It's buried by hundreds of millions of years since it was in the air!
So what do we do? We set it free. It's not just the part of the atmosphere that warms the earth when you add it, it is life. Alien to us and from an ancient earth where it probably looked like a green boiling ocean, green everywhere. The oil we're burning used to be the atmosphere. It was part of the 5% or whatever of CO2 earth had in the air at that time when it was also like 20C warmer, so the life probably didn't have skeletons and we have a very limited picture of what it looked like without anything to make fossils... but hey, we got oil instead of fossils - lakes of it.
Can you imagine lakes full of dinosaur bone? It's better because it's the whole corpse, and it's plants, so it's like wood... the stuff that comes from trees taking time to turn CO2 and sunlight into, but tiny algae so woody dandruff... turning the atmosphere into a pile of stored atmosphere... the atmosphere of the planet that was 20c hotter.
Is it at all clear where I'm going with this and does everyone know this? Cause it's crazy to me and literally horrifying that we decided that the deep past was a place we could visit, we found the concentrate of the work of millions of years of a much more productive planet, work that pulls carbon out of the air and millions of years of it because it's a liquid it's not in layers, but there were layers at some early stage, because there were seasons in the upper latitudes and the sedimentation would be different in winter. At some point you could read the years like a tree, counting the "rings".
And that's what you're doing when you burn wood, exactly. You're releasing however old the tree is worth of work to pull carbon out of the air, and all the carbon it worked with along with the sunlight in the form of heat.
Oil isn't just from the past, it is the past. The atmosphere and the balance of life on the ground and death in the air which is the foundation of the climate. So we're taking planetary time out of the ground... cremating it, and releasing the deep past into the air.
And that's how you change the atmosphere and climate. The only way that doesn't involve a huge collision with something in space like the size of the moon. Atmospheric chemicals have to be trapped below the surface and then you have to set it on fire to release it as the form that's in the air.
All of that to say that the reason why oil works so well for us is that it's literally life time we can pull the work out of (usually a pathetic percentage because we were too dumb to imagine there could be consequences to burning actual time, so never care much about fuel efficiency in our designs; see jet liner as giant time burning machine, crop dusting ancient planet all over the place! You know geoengineering, where scientists are looking for something they can't get into the sky that changes the heat character of the climate. Youre probably imagining a plane with something coming out the bottom... it's the plane - the entire concept of moving weight through the air on wings that don't flap because you've got these huge ass fans that throw time into blades spinning faster than your ear can hear, so fully out of the range of sounds we evolved to be able to hear, throwing so much "heat character changing chemicals" into the air, it's pushing a tube full of hundreds of people as far as halfway around the earth.
And it's a totally amazing achievement for a flightless species to suddenly be able to fly everywhere, until you realize that it's not a flying machine, it's a time burning geoengineering machine that uses the stored sunlight evergy of life working as hard as it can for who knows how many years, and adding that change to the air.
And that's everything about the planet that's different now from before. The change in the earth that's actually millions of years worth of change, that's powered the building and running of this civilization for a couple hundred years. That's 10,000 years per year, and it's not exactly right but there is some true number and it's not that far off.
Hmmmm how did we manage to fly? We set time on fire and threw it out the back to push people to an island for a week, then fly right back. Zero net change in a person's life, huge amount of permanent change to the chemistry of the atmosphere. And it's not just planes they're just the stupidest thing, or at least the most egregious, "we have no idea how any of this works, but it burns real good and makes life fun!" engineering, but if there are aliens, they're watching us smiling as we make our planet alien to our species and all other life, needing to set fire to 10k years of production to satisfy 1 year of our activities.
And for that, we'll be one of very few planets in the universe changing this much, this quickly. Any species that got out of the atmosphere or even into it, unless they're intelligent birds, did it without burning anything because if they did, they'd be extinct along with the life on their planet. Any truly interplanetary species that actually exists and could get here, is watching the rarest moment ever where a truly dumb species got bored, dug through the time barrier of the ground, found remains of the past world, and are burning it like it's nothing.
You ever realize the only thing we don't pay for is the exhaust we produce? Everything else has a cost. Everything. When countries put a price on exhaust, because it costs money to take out and they're trying to pay for climate projects, the people lose their mind because, "taxes are too high already" so we continue to live in a world where the only thing that has zero value is the exhaust of burning oil. The fuel costs a huge amount to move, but we pay the absolute minimum price for it. It's companies that pull it out of the ground so why are we paying the least amount possible for the oil and nothing for the exhaust? The only reason is that if we had to pay, so would industry and this whole thing only works if almost all the work is done on the cheap.
And you're like but how are you so exact about the connection, that this system can't work without cheap oil and free exhaust... turn the oil off for a day and watch what's still working by the end of the day that wasn't built specifically to avoid burning oil. See that? Nothing works... because the work is the oil which was the sunlight over time and the living portion of the earth, and that work was done to bottle the carbon from the air with the energy of the sun.
It works because it is work and it's the work of a much faster planet concentrated by the process that eventually leads to diamond in some cases. ..
Still can't quite explain it right... I'll get it right eventually

The Biosphere 2 experiment may be a more relevant analogy: they would probably have died without outside intervention. In the case of these tombs, I would expect claustrophobia would become a very real problem for their inhabitants and, if they were then to leave them for the outside world after, say, three years, I think agoraphobia would wind up being an important contributing factor to their deaths.

while generally true this is the case basicaly only for a subgroup of people. Alot of people are insanely stupid and also totally unaware and out of touch with their emotions, nevermind being in control or being able to hone their free will...these are the people you dont want with you as they will get you into trouble and or killed... similiar to guys shaking the net during the storming of normandy...if you know you know....This is why nasa and other instituitions vet people beforehand to see how they deal with this...there are people that can live down there their entire life and not go crazy. As long as the essentiels are dealt with like food water and air its easy. But it takes people that get and understand and accept the situation and dont bullshit themselves just to freak out when they cant contain themselves anymore, as the only thing that kept them seemingly sane was desperately clinging to false hope. Once that is gone they usually lose their shit. Weve found entire underground cities that can and have housed over 20k people in places like turkey but they are being found all around the world. Also under teh USA and Most of europe their are huuuuge networks of basically cities that operate on a whole nother level than what the zucks got going on. Also referred to as D.U.M.Bs (Deep Underground Military Bases)

Just like other bunkers, these are just to get through the major nuclear "depopulation event" and a few years of resulting chaos. After that, they emerge to be... whatever they want to be. By then they will control the only technology left to the species.
And why are they building them? Because they know they are about to use them, that's why.
This knowledge is literally the only real thing these types have intellectually over the rest of us. These bunkers are not a permanent solution or anything designed to survive untouched for decades, they are only for the short term, to survive wathever it comes in comfort and serve as a seat of safety and wealth (in wathever they can get in) and probably power. Think more like a Late Roman villa of a super wealthy roman aristocrat magnate. Many billionaires probably have several built around the world, in most cases just as some sort of insurance "just in case" because in our current system they have been allowed to accumulate such obscene amount of wealth that they can spend enormous amount of money on such projects as an afterthought.
To stretch it further, most Late Roman magnates were interested in the continuation of the super corrupt regime that allowed them to have such wealth and power but still were having semi autonomous fortified villas

The thing that these despots drunk on power and money, don't seem to get, is that the systems they depend on in their bunker WILL break down in a year or two without a background industrial society. I'm an HVAC tech, keeping complex systems running requires an endless fire hose of parts and material. And it takes the teeniest tiniest part to brick a machine. The Challenger literally exploded because of a $0.05 O-ring. And spare parts don't last forever. Rubber and plastic break down even in storage. Mice and insects find their way into everything and chew stuff.
TL;DR Without a functional industrial society, these bunkers will break down and fail in less than 5 years.
Johannes_P@reddit
This is a reason why royal households had to hire plenty specialists and had so much workshops.
For exemple, even today, in the UK, there's an entire Medical Household to tend to the health of Charles III and his family. Similarly, in Qing China, the Imperial Household Department had 56 different departments, including for cooking, animal-tending and weapon making.
All these required a lot of input material and manpower. If the sole doctor of the bunker was to die, who will replace him? And where will drugs be found, especially rare ones? In fiction, Billionaires' Bunker once had to deal with a medical urgence while, in one of the Fallout games, the protagonist had to go to the outside world due to a major piece dealing with water purification being broken.
Carbonatite@reddit
Environmental chemist here - strong agree. A temporary quirk in influent conditions can completely scuttle a municipal water treatment plant with microbial overgrowth. Filtration systems have a finite lifespan. A couple molecules of blight can decimate a hydroponic farm.
Billionaires think that the people like you and I - the technical specialists who build and monitor and maintain these systems - are easily replaceable. They will reject our advice if it means they can save a bit of money, they think the institutional knowledge we collectively posess can be replaced with LLMs. But when something goes wrong because they ignored the guy who said "you need to spend an additional $200k on a backup air handling system"...the view that wealth is equivalent to knowledge will fail them.
You see that attitude constantly in my field. A lot of environmental disasters have been the result of some asshole in upper management thinking they can ignore the advice of engineers who tell them that saving $100/year on inferior safety valves isn't worth the risk of valve failure. Or that trying to cut costs on chemical monitoring systems to detect early leaks is a bad idea. Their hubris ends up costing the corporation millions of dollars in the end when they have to pay damages for injured/dead workers and fund environmental remediation in the vicinity of the spill.

Billionaires are mentally ill and very clearly stupid despite their best efforts to conceal it. They haven’t thought this through. A bunker only shields against so much.
jjdmol@reddit
Billionaires are not our friends. They won't help save the planet, they will just spend money to have somewhere to flee to and let the rest of us die.
Turbojelly@reddit
The why is publically available, but billionaire owned media don't like talking about it. Enviroment is fucked and getting worze, we're talking about areas of Earth becoming uninhabital and mass migration due to it starting in the next 5-10 years.
Rossdxvx@reddit
When you strip away their demi-God status, they are just people like us. That is the thing: When humans created civilization, they also created rigid hierarchies and class systems. All of that is very fragile if the foundations of civilization itself break down. That is why these people are so very foolish. They think that if things get bad enough, they will just bug out in their bunkers and that they will be untouchable. Unless there is a nuclear war which eradicates most of humanity, these guys will suddenly find themselves in an upside-down world where they are no longer kings.
Or, it will be like Day of the Dead (1985), and they and their handlers will unravel mentally underneath the ground within their gilded prisons.

The rich are prone to believe in elite panic, despite all the evidence to the contrary.

You don't need to "know something" to have a contingency plan. Maybe they are just trying to be prepared to survive in the event that shit hits the fan, even if they think it is unlikely. If you have comically enormous wealth, you might as well build a bunker like this. If you gave the average prepper a billion dollars, they probably would do the same. Seems like a more useful thing to have than an 11th supermansion.

Bunkers are the latest "thing" very rich people can own. For them, the cost is insignificant, like having two planes instead of one. For someone of more modest means, it's like an extra can of soup in the cupboard - good to have, and you might use it someday, but it's not a big deal. It's kind of like that.

A dude was flown to a private meeting with a bunch of rich people decades ago.
They wanted to ask him how to prepare for "the event"
Talking about how would they keep their staff in control, bomb collars on family members? controlled food?
They literally asked these things. When the guy said treating them well and as equals the rich snobs just laughed at him
They have been burning the wick at both ends for decades now and siphoning every bit of value they can to themselves, we will be left with the ashes and forced to deal with it or die.
I like how most people have resolved not to attempt to enter the bunkers and that the best solution is to simply bury them. Even the most advanced air system needs intake somewhere from the surface, i look forward to see these places just get buried by collective effort and left to rot.
BazukaToof@reddit
I personally love the idea of billionaires surviving. They can live out their days in isolation attempting to unclog their own fucking toilet and eat 30 year old pop tarts while attempting to take care of this godforsaken planet after all us schlumps have melted down Raiders of the Lost Arc style. It is all survivalist fantasy.
Are some bunkers being built by excited billionaires who can drop a few hundred million on a fun project? Of course. there is. They will spend that on a Superyacht they use a few weeks a year.
New Zealand often comes up as an example. In New Zealand you need a permit with inspections from the local council to move your kitchen, let alone build an subterranean structure.
- That means the plans in council records for anyone who does a file pull on the property.
- That means engineers, architechs, builders, concrete workers, electricians, plumbers, painters, plasterers etc.
- That means maintenance staff, housekeeping staff, personal shoppers.
It would quickly be the worst kept secret in town and in a situation where it might be needed it would be quickly under new management by locals.

They cant stop climate change. Our society is spiraling out of control. And we are on the verge of widespread economic and social collapse in many western nations in the coming years if things dont change course. They are trying to take over and take control of as much shit as they can before it all goes tits up.
They ultimately want to transition to some sort of techno feudalistic reality where they are in absolute control, or they want to engineer our collapse whilst they hide out in their bunkers and wait for the dust to settle, in the hopes they can subsequently attempt to inherit the world and remake it in their image.
Sounds looney, but these are raging narcissists, and to make a billion, you have to be an inherently bad person. You dont make that without stepping over a few bodies along the way.
Coco_Cannibal@reddit
Environmental collapse is NOT on their list and climate change is at number 3 at best, right after the AI take over and the peasant uprising, which they built the bunkers for.

And willfully ignorant, fueled by the ivory tower effect of being literally not like the other humans in terms of wealth and power.
These people would eat a piece of shit, if you slapped gold onto it and tell them something they want to hear.
These bunkers, albeit in theory able to last for 20 years in terms of food and energy, are meant for short term societal collapse, the last battle of the poor Vs the rich.
They somehow think that , when they leave those bunkers, earth magically turned into a pristine nature reserve and all the pollution that makes vertebrates infertile and all the heat that kills vertebrates vanished.
They believe killing off the poor, now that we are useless, because robots, is a solution to ALL the problems caused by industrial civilization.

Fear of death. Hope for any kind of future.
I'd build one if I could.
Better to avoid catastrophe if possible - but if it's out of your control, then it's not irrational to try to survive using the means available to you. Most people lack the means and the foresight.
And depending upon the type of collapse one forsees, a decade or two underground might be enough. At least that's what they're hoping for.
After a 99% human extinction event, neglected nuclear and chemical facilities would create huge problems, but the otherwise near elimination of air pollution and CO₂ emissions associated with near total population decline might also stabilize warming over a decade or so.
For less catastrophic collapse related to supply chain logistics, unrest, pandemic or others... even less time would be required.
And if earth is sterilized - then it doesn't matter what you do.
Chernobyl has become a sort of wildlife refuge. I gather they're thinking that things don't need to be perfect to be survivable.
Carbonatite@reddit
Warming would still continue simply due to the atmospheric residence time of certain GHGs and the finite ability of natural geochemical cycles to sequester the excess CO2, etc. in the atmosphere. This was one of the concepts that first showed me the grim reality of anthropogenic CO2 - even if all emissions stopped today, we would still see warming for at least a century. Because you can't put tens of millions of years worth of carbon into the atmosphere in the span of a couple centuries and expect that the planet's natural buffering capacity will keep up.
So the rate of warming might stabilize, but it would still happen.
maltedbacon@reddit
If human population were near-zero, isn't it possible plant growth resurgence might shorten that somewhat?
No question it's going to suck - not arguing that.
Carbonatite@reddit
Yeah, but it'd be more like "slowly decreasing rate of warming approaching 0 over the span of 80+ years".
We've put literally tens of millions of years worth of carbon into the atmosphere in the span of a few centuries. It's going to take a while for the planet to equilibrate after that.
maltedbacon@reddit
Yup. That's how I explained it to climate change deniers 25 years ago.
You can't take millions or billions of years of accumulated carbon and set it on fire and expect the air will be fine.

There's a drama series on Hulu called "Paradise". I recommend the first season.
It's part post-apocalypse drama, about a bunch of White House staff, rich people and other survivors holed up in a giant underground city surviving a nuclear war.
And it's part murder mystery. Someone killed the President. And after three years of being cooped up with wind or rain, no real sunlight, seeing the same people and having the same conversations again and again, everyone is at their breaking point and everyone has a motive.
I look at these photographs of bunkers, and it's like wow. For all the money they have they can't imagine vast caverns and rivers and jungles, they can't construct underground castles, they can't even reproduce Grand Central Station. It's just concrete prison after prison after prison with more comfy furniture. Not even a diving pool filled with (soft) coins for the sheer hubris and tetchiness of it.
These are absolutely Pharaoh's tombs made by the lowest bidder. And I do not want to be in one.

Security will quite possibly assume control and eat the rich. When money has no value, what power will the billionaires have? A finite supply of food water and clean air will only get you so far.
No_Albatross7213@reddit
That doesn’t seem luxurious.
babooshkaa@reddit
My ex’s boss built one of these and then got in trouble for sending me pictures of it and made me delete them.
Born_Barnacle7793@reddit
Mark Zuckerberg versus a group of ex special forces dudes who have no use for money, who are now outside the law, and who will now are in a zero sum game for resources. I will take the trained soldiers.
Warren Buffet said it best: “I happen to have a talent for acquiring capital. But my ability to use that talent is completely dependent on the society I was born into. If I’d been born into a tribe of hunters, this talent of mine would be completely worthless.”
The billionaires of today’s power completely lies in living in a society that values very abstract notions of capital, wealth, and property. It always boggles my mind that billionaires spend so much effort preparing for a world where they will, in effect, lose much of the power and social position offered to them right now. In fact, it seems like they’re actually steering us towards it.
This has got to be the best possible time to be insanely rich. Why do they keep trying to change the circumstances of their fortune?
Locke03@reddit
Because they are severely mentally unwell & disconnected from reality and the idea that they can only have some of the money and power drives them crazy. They want all the money and power and maintaining the world as it is requires that they share a miniscule amount of that wealth with people they consider to be little more than animals.
Cellophaneflower89@reddit
They are a bunch of crazy accelerationists who do not care about us peasants. I do find it interesting that so many of them are building them in New Zealand.
Kurrukurrupa@reddit
old missle silos from the 50-60s are cooler. Imagine what they must have built they don't allow pictures of?
TheJuliettest@reddit
The fact that all the billionaires in the world decided they needed doomsday bunkers in the last few years and we’re still apparently not concerned is fucking mind blowing
NormalGuyPosts@reddit
If there's one thing I learned from COVID, it's that living in even semi-luxury alone will drive you pretty miserable pretty quickly.
And that's WITH Wi-FI!
Xerxero@reddit
I give them 3 weeks before they give up.
Locke03@reddit
Whatever is being built in the first two pictures isn't protecting anything from anyone that is at least a tiny bit motivated. 3' of dirt and mild steel? An hour tops with a shovel and an oxy-acetylene torch and someone will be inside.
NeverEndingCoralMaze@reddit
The southern hemisphere makes a lot of sense because there aren’t any nuclear capable countries south of the equator and there are multiple treaties in place ensuring this.
I cannot explain Hawaii, it’s definitely a target for any country desiring to nuke the U.S.
TheCosmosItself1@reddit
I wouldn't read so much into it. Yes, some of them may be collapse aware to various degrees, but basically they're billionaires and so they can easily afford everything. They have everything: boats, houses, airplanes, car collections, etc, etc, etc. Why shouldn't they have a bunker. If there is a 2% chance it comes in useful, it is worth buying for them, and in the meantime it gives them rich dude bragging rights. Ultimately a luxury bunker compound is just another expensive house.
tkonicz@reddit
I wrote an article about it back in the day: https://konicz.substack.com/p/the-exodus-of-the-money-people

Might as well have a big sign saying food and medicine in here. None of these people are going in without staff of some sort and that's the weakness

Dr. Evil type shit right there.

Concrete is a bad choice because you can never get the blood stains out. And there will be blood.
Zerodyne_Sin@reddit
People lost their minds during covid and there was relatively some freedom of movement. These fragile narcissists are going to paint the walls with their own shit and entrails shortly after the doors lock.
earthlingHuman@reddit
Is that even deep enough?
AHRA1225@reddit
They can have them.
Phrainkee@reddit
Starving to death doesn't take long and is an extreme stress on our common decency we experience in our daily lives.
With everyone at that point of "I need food for my family, nothing else matters" any cohesion that could've been had is gone, let alone attacking these bunkers "after the fall".
And from the 2020-21 COVID era, the world's environment began bouncing back (ever so slightly) pretty quickly.
We all die off within the first month or first year, they pop out and begin rebuilding how they see fit in a world that's flourising without our pollution. Game animals are plenty, figure out some food to grow, rinse and repeat. Sure call them lazy and unable to "help themselves" without servants but I'm sure (the younger millionaires/billionaires) they could figure it out, especially if the would is essentially empty of humanity. They won't have the society as we know it to enjoy but the point is surviving.
The only plausible way I see all of us, including them going down with the ship is nuclear winter/ a new ice age. No one's surviving 10s of 100s of years of freezing.
I don't like how that sounds, I want justice for these crimes against humanity that they've directly caused. So to me it also seems like they know this and that they have a vested interest in NOT having a nuclear war...
The only real defense I could see is remembering the families that caused this and once humanity IS rebuilding, they're shunned and/or punished.
Tldr; short of nuclear winter fallout, they'll probably come out on top. I could be wrong, but who survives longer? Someone with stock piles of food and the ability to hide securely or someone who doesn't have any of that? Not trying to go overboard on the defeatism but they'll (most likely) win... Whatever that means..
Tldr 2; Do some doomsday prepping strategies like now lol.
unknownpoltroon@reddit
Look. They got air vents, and after the collapse of society I gotta shit somewhere.
Oh, and those armoured doors? Super easy to wedge/weld shut.
Frubbs@reddit
Climate change will cause mass global pandemonium over the course of the next century. They’re securing a space to try and avoid the worst impacts of it, including geopolitical tensions as people fight over land/resources

Do they really think that will save them? It's get bad enough to be in a bunker, your money is now worthless and you are a huge target.
AllThingsBeginWithNu@reddit

GuluGuluBoy@reddit
That's a millionaire bunker, not a billionaire bunker.
jorgespinosa@reddit
Honestly for the amount of luxury these people are used too, they will quickly lose their mind in the apocalypse
psilocybes@reddit
Your post is about bunkers, you dont need to defend yourself looking for bunkers... hahah bunkersapp
Sufficient_Bass2600@reddit
There is a country in Africa with a very long river in which 4000 years ago the equivalent of billionnaires had their own luxury bunker.
Today we call them pyramid.
I wonder what ours will be called in the future.
brandontaylor1@reddit
I’ve already decided that post collapse hobby will be finding bunkers and welding doors shut.
casualLogic@reddit
Kinda like Club Fed, a luxury bunker is a prison all the same.

ridiculous.
what is their ventilation system?

2019 news. They do it because they can. Douglas Rushkoff wrote a whole book a few years ago that discusses this.
Batbuckleyourpants@reddit

Carbonatite@reddit
God forbid they put their money towards improving society and the environment so that survival bunkers become unnecessary
LarryCrabCake@reddit
They know that we outnumber them and could easily bring an end to their reign by sunset if we tried
They're prepared for that moment, whenever it comes, as it always has throughout history.
LastGuardianStanding@reddit
Sad thing is, if something does happen, 5, 10, or 15,000 years from now those bunkers will be unearthed. And whoever finds them will try to understand them the same way we dig up ancient sites and try to understand them.
joedenowhere@reddit
Pathetic. I'd rather die from radiation poisoning or a heat wave than be stuck in a "bunker" with plutocrats.
Nom-De-Gruyere@reddit
The way it is constructed is a lot like the one someone made from buried school busses.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ark_Two_Shelter
rmannyconda78@reddit
I’ve thought about building something similar but on a smaller scale, mainly to squirrel away my black and white movie reels in, along with books, photographs, and negatives, just a way to preserve history. This probably won’t even have ventilation shafts as it’s not meant for human habitation, strictly storage of historic goods
Nom-De-Gruyere@reddit
You probably still want ventilation. Any underground structure will let moisture in, so you will get damp and rust and possibly fungi. If you want it to work without any powered systems you could try building a solar chimney. Something as simple as a tall steel pipe pipe painted black would do it. The pipe heats in the sun, causing convection which sucks fresh air into the bunker through lower air vents at the other end.
rmannyconda78@reddit
That’s valid, even though yes my films are on polyester base, moisture can cause mold and shit to ruin it, and rust reels.
Deguilded@reddit
TIL there's a nuclear fallout shelter within driving distance of me.

btcurlyhead1@reddit
Bunkers are the lamest thing you have unfathomable wealth and control and you hide in some dirt? All the money in the world and you still tasteless uninspiring just downright ugly tunnel things. Something spectacular like a giant space ship or underwater or sum please no style
brickout@reddit
You know why.

LOLOLOLOL!!!! They can have a great time! I’d rather be dead. In no way would I want to be in ant kind of apocalypse. Byeeee!

KristinaHeartford@reddit
Noice.
Substantial_Chest395@reddit
I’m confused why you’re confused. Asking why a billionaire would invest money in building something like this is like asking why the rest of us invest in a pair of socks. The money is negligible to them, why wouldn’t they do any and everything they can to somewhat insulate themselves from the catastrophe that approaches.
AnarchicDeviance@reddit
Think of them as canned goods for when you're really hungry.
aGrlHasNoUsername@reddit

NotThatItWillMatter@reddit
Honestly, one thing I learned growing up with a mortician for a father.
All caskets are fucking expensive.
The cheap ones at my father's work place in a rural shithole were still like 8k a piece.
aGrlHasNoUsername@reddit
Even cremation is expensive now. It’s out of control.
CorvidCorbeau@reddit
This will never stop making rounds here.
The wealthy elite of humanity have been surrounding themselves in walled-off shelters populated pretty much exclusively by their servants for hundreds upon hundreds of years.
These cost insane, unimaginable amounts of money...to you and I. Mark Zuckerberg's bunker was about as much of an inconvenience to him as a fast food meal is to you. And if you can afford a place where you can hunker down and hopefully survive the storm, why wouldn't you? It's not a sign they know anything we don't, because they'd have these shelters even if they were completely clueless about the world. It's a safe-ish spot, it costs them basically nothing, and it gives them somewhere to go in case a wild "what if" scenario comes to be.
Back in the 2010s, during the big apocalypse craze, some people made their fortune scamming rich people into buying overpriced, renovated cold war era bunkers. because hey, what if the world is really ending, and it's not like you can't afford it, right? They genuinely do not care, I'm sure there's a few who built one of these due to a genuine fear of near term societal collapse, but just as many have one for shits and giggles.
Ultimately, these are just flashy tombs. They will not grant them a long life inside, most are only good for a few years, and the kind of mental anguish these confined spaces will force upon their inhabitants is immense. This is not what genuine preparation looks like, because that's just as much about important assets as it is about being mentally prepared. If you only have one of these two covered, you will not last long.
MHGrim@reddit
Just find the air intake it out.
Paradox0111@reddit
I don’t think most Billionaires have some insider knowledge we don’t; they just have a few hundred million extra to drop on Just in case.. It’s blatantly obvious at this point that the world is teetering; the only real questions are what will be the catastrophic event and when will it happen, will it be localized to a continent/hemisphere or global?
kismethavok@reddit
removed by reddit filters, fucking lol
freeman_joe@reddit
Luxury living like on submarine? They can go for two months to live in any submarine and they will reconsider this and maybe just maybe start solving global problems rationally.
The_Phantom_Cat@reddit
Well, if anything DOES happen we know where they are so they're just building their own tombs

Billionaires are the ultimate parasitic form.
emmc47@reddit
This is so dumb because they are knowingly creating an inhospitable planet that would require them to live like this. In less luxury. Just for short term profit or to gamble on the fact that they can get their own little technofeudal state.
They're all sociopaths, devoid of any sense of moral consciousness. They want to speedrun the rise of AI to create entities that can fully be subservient to them without worry of humanity.
These people legit despise their humanity. The fact that death is the great equalizer. That despite seeing themselves as above us, that one day, they'll meet the same fate as us.
The greatest moral failure was perpetuating a system that allowed these people to do this to all of us.
Northernsoul73@reddit
I presume that an unpolished concrete look gives the dwellers the ‘roughing’ it aesthetic. I’m sure that they could fork out for a splash of colour as to offset that looming nuclear fall out gloom. Boring cunts!
AlwaysPissedOff59@reddit
In 2026, gray is the new spectrum of colors.
Breadromancer@reddit
Mhhmmm so floodable, hope the ventilation is also good. Hunting cave animals often just involved smoking them out.
reasonable_bill@reddit
Realistically how long can you survive alone in there without wanting to off yourself?
Quirky_Chicken_1840@reddit
Try looking up Switzerland and bunkers. I think there are more bunkers than people lol The bunkers were big through the late 50s up to the Berlin Wall coming down.
The abandoned subreddit periodically has them from all over the globe.
It’s certainly keeping welders and metalworkers+ gainfully employed. I think this particular manufacturer has a YouTube channel also
whiskers165@reddit
They are designing their own underground prisons. They already know we are going to lock them up and throw away the key so they are getting ahead of it by building their own cells, better than what we would have given them. We will bury them and when we do they will voluntarily go underground and lock themselves in never to see the sun again
Kiss_of_Cultural@reddit
Just need to find the vent and add a liiiittle concrete.
OuterLightness@reddit
The only thing keeping this safe is secrecy. It is under just a few feet of dirt.

I rather stay outside then to be in a bunker with someone of such bad character that they've become a billionaire.

That’s not a long term solution. And concrete is pretty cheap.
max10192@reddit
Is it the paranoia of the uberwealthy, or genuine foresight of whats coming? Hard to say.

Do they something we don't? Maybe you don't, but I'm painfully aware of the same thing they are. Climate change, nuclear war, AI, asteroid, aliens? Take your pick, it's all totally crazy and off the hook now.
I just don't see the appeal of just "surviving" in a hole while everyone else burns. What are you waiting for? Not like you'll emerge from your bunker into some Utopian society.
