Anyone know what is going on and if people are okay?
burberrycondom@reddit
Suspect is 69 year old Sung Han Ho. Taken into custody. Shooting happened after a business deal gone bad. 2 people deceased, 3 in stable condition. Per Carrolton police chief

I used to live in Koreatown in LA and these shootings within the community happened all the time. Apparently Korean have an anger problem, to the point where there’s terms for it: K-rage or Han.
uju_@reddit
Han does not refer to “an anger problem.” Like your Google search indicates, it is a deep feeling of anger caused by oppression and injustice. It is a very symbolic, beautiful word in Korean and should not be misleadingly equated to senseless acts of violence. Please do not denigrate something you do not understand. It is used in oppressive contexts re: Japanese colonization of Korea, struggle for independence, etc.
I’d also like to point out that shootings do not happen with Koreans in Korea because civilians cannot possess guns. This may be an America-specific problem, and with all of the school shootings you see day to day, I would not be surprised if that were the case here.
blacksystembbq@reddit
It’s almost like anger is multifaceted and can be caused by more than one thing. The definition of “Han” does include anger caused by “personal injustice” and a “drive for revenge to right the wrongs.” It’s a feeling that has roots in historical oppression but applies to feelings of anger and revenge in modern day.
uju_@reddit
Please re-read every sentence I wrote. I did not say Han is ONLY used regarding historical oppression. I read the article, and it is a beautiful depiction of a non-primary Korean speaker’s experience of discovering the word. This is not an attack on you specifically, but Han is a Korean word that is tied up with so much cultural significance and context and I bristle at the thought of readers coming across a misinformed generalization about it in connection to a shooting. I understand that it’s difficult to understand — the article mentions it but Koreans often describe Han as a word that has no equivalent in a different language. It’s not about personal injustice in the limited context. It has to do with situating yourself in a generational context. A close conceptual equivalent could be ancestral rage. The professor’s anecdote about a mom talking about her Han in the admissions context is supposed to be an ironic use of the word, which is not as explicitly noted in the article (written by a non-primary Korean speaker). Again, Han is not an “anger problem” in that it is not really a problem, but the genuine experience and affirmation of anger, as well as the multitude of feelings such as melancholy that accompanies it. Your Korean friends may have used it to describe their Korean rage and anger, but if they have used it in contexts of personal grievances that do not extend outside of their immediate and contemporaneous self it is an incorrect usage of the word.
Spyu@reddit
It’s definitely an American specific problem. Shockingly in places where guns are illegal to possess there isn’t a shooting everyday.
Small_Eyes361@reddit
Applying an abstract, cultural concept to a tragedy like this, and explicitly attributing this incident to a specific Korean problem is highly insensitive and probably pretty racist. This whole incident was because of some bad business deal, not because of some historical baggage and some inherent emotionality. It just feels very orientalist of you to drag that very specific cultural context from Korea into this incident.
I do think Korean culture can be quite emotive and expressive in its anger, for better or worse, but that culture has absolutely nothing to do with this incident.
blacksystembbq@reddit
“but that culture has absolutely nothing to do with this incident”
And you know that culture has absolutely nothing to do with it bc? You investigated the crime scene? And interviewed the suspect?
Small_Eyes361@reddit
How do you know that some abstract concept made by academics and artists (Yanagi Soetsu was one of the first to talk about an aspect of Korean culture, saying that there is a sorrowful element to the art; but his narrative has been questioned, it is simply his own projection though to his credit he was sympathetic to the plight of Koreans) motivates all Koreans to commit violence? This was just some business deal fuck up, it could have literally been any other culture and yet for a Korean you're like Oh it's this special concept made up by academics and artists to describe Korean's historical trauma in art works. Your Korean friends say that because even in our own culture we have ingrained it in our minds to treat as if Koreans have suffered tremendously in history and are special as a result; this is our pain, this is our struggle; Korean culture is very nationalistic, we often make ourselves special due to a loss of identity due to colonialism and exploitation. But why are you applying that concept? It's not something special to Koreans; the historical trauma that Koreans faced does not inherently lead to man shooting up businesses. This happens all the time, regardless of Korean or not. Stop projecting. As much as I know nothing, as much as you know nothing, nonetheless it is quite clear that what you are saying is a huge stretch logically.
a1usiv@reddit
And how would you explain the many shootings by angry caucasians? Blacks? Hispanics?
blacksystembbq@reddit
I don’t know, I haven’t lived in most of those communities and talked about it with friends from those communities.
Snobolski@reddit
Holy crap! I'm curious to know the dollar amount of this business deal, to know what kind of price this scumbag puts on human lives.
Small_Eyes361@reddit
I think it was rent related, something about him being going to be evacuated for not paying rent for 3 months. Business in that area has been pretty bad anyways, with Gwanjang Market shutting down a few months ago. There was some meeting about that but then the shooting happened. Of course this is all a jumbled collection of hearsay from what my mom heard from her friends.
burrito3ater@reddit
Surprisingly That area is always packed, but yes some of those businesses are barely breaking even according to my friend who works at one.
theywillnotsing@reddit
Well, if I know anything about humans and life, prepare to be disappointed.

AdeptVeterinarian541@reddit
Shooting 5 people doesn't sound like a minor disagreement, that sounds like planned mass murder.
Puzzled-Vanilla-7224@reddit
Sung Ho didn’t like the proposal.
zuqkfplmehcuvrjfgu@reddit
It seems like a suspect has been taken into custody.. Really hoping there aren't any casualties. I was there last week and the sense of community is really strong, so this is very tragic to see.
aceofspadez138@reddit
I lived within three minutes of that area for 25 years before recently moving. Strong sense of community is right. It's a very quiet residential area that has a growing commercial presence that's trying to find its footing. This is really sad. Between this an the Allen Mall shooting, it really does feel like no area is truly safe.
ragn4rok234@reddit
As someone currently three minutes from that area, it still feels extremely safe.
aceofspadez138@reddit
I mean, yes, it’s a safe area lol my point is that it’s wild that something like this can happen in an area that’s extremely safe.
Dramatic-Bedroom-759@reddit
When we have this many guns, lax laws around them, and emotionally unregulated or angry people then this is the result.
Doesn't matter if it's a nice area, a school, a church, this can happen anywhere a dude with a gun can go.
orthodoxscouter@reddit
It was a business meeting that went bad. The suspect was meeting with five others and he shot them all. He killed two of them and injured the other three who are now in the hospital.
adjust_your_set@reddit
My wife and I were on the strip of shops last night and I was saying the same thing to her. This sucks.
padresnumerouno@reddit
1 killed and 4 injured from one source I read, can anyone confirm if the shooter was asian?
sealclubberfan@reddit
Why are you asking if they are asian?
Lonely_Signature9107@reddit
during AAPI month, may have been a hate crime
burrito3ater@reddit
Asian on Asian hate
Impressive-Stick5605@reddit
The police chief said it wasn’t a hate crime
Longjumping-Tie2950@reddit
I saw a text message screenshot from a hispanic lady at the scene that says the shooter was "asian"
GoldenFrog14@reddit
Official now. Shooter was a 69 year old Korean man

This supermarket has opened and died multiple times already. I always check out the shops inside and hope that they can make it. The boba shop OneZo is right next to it and unfortunately closed as well. They had a good thing going with flavored boba and artist alley events. Now this happens bro they can't catch a break...
Small_Eyes361@reddit
The previous owner of the area committed suicide a while back. Really cursed area honestly.
Crazy_Ad_91@reddit
No shit? The one who funded the original construction back in 2020?
EvilTomahawk@reddit
Onezo was my favorite boba shop in the metroplex. The shopping center pretty much died to me after they closed.
Puzzled-Vanilla-7224@reddit
More Tae Kwon Do
Less guns
Puzzled-Vanilla-7224@reddit
Ok fck it, more guns!!!
Sheesh, there’s no home for Texans
115_dude@reddit
They evacuated us from the Hmart less than an hour ago. For sure it's related to this.
wanderershe-ra@reddit
They captured the shooter at Hmart.
StealthySweepy@reddit
I was just at Hmart trying to get in, but this facility where the shooting occurred is like 3-4 miles away, what does the Hmart have to do with it?
115_dude@reddit
No clue, I'm sitting in the IHOP right in front of it right now, and I see that there is an Irving Police bomb squad vehicle parked outside. Separate incident? Considering that the suspect for the shooting is already confirmed in custody, and police are still here.
wjlee91@reddit
Shooter was arrested near hmart

cherd1214@reddit
Shooting. 2 dead, 3 injured. 3 detained by CPD
random-user-420@reddit
Yeah. I was just at hmart to buy some snacks and police told us all to leave the area.
Driveshaft1982@reddit
Ugh, I just drove by this and was wondering what was going on - police everywhere. Hope everyone is okay. Seeing at least 5 people injured.
Small_Eyes361@reddit
sadly two people died... what a fucked up mess
Driveshaft1982@reddit
😞 awful
StealthySweepy@reddit
There has to be TWO separate instances going on. There was this event, but I JUST got back from going to Hmart located at Old Denton and Trinity Mills and there were a mix of 20 Police, State Troopers, and Sheriffs at THAT facility too, which is a few miles away. We were completely barred from entering the Hmart or even the parking lot.
This was at 12:15PM today.
Small_Eyes361@reddit
I was in that HMart when it happened. I was shopping with my mother, aunt, and cousin for kimchi making and all the sudden people were turning around and looking at the entrance. Supposedly some folks came in screaming in fear, then we saw many police coming in. We were told to stand down, and after some time they got us out. My mother showed me a photo that was taken later and apparently an old Korean man was arrested, with the alleged motive being a business related one; he initially targeted Gwanjang Market and for some reason came to HMart. That Gwanjang Market I knew was a failed business, when it first opened I went there but it was really empty, many things not even stocked and all the small businesses save the food court open. Why did they open so early without much preparation? There was barely anything in stock save some produce and some packaged goods.
StealthySweepy@reddit
That's wild, thanks for sharing and glad to hear you're safe.
menudoverde@reddit (OP)
Sounds like the suspect was arrested later at the H mart a few miles away.
kevntao@reddit
Same incident, the story is written somewhat unclear. initial incident happened in North Carrollton near the KTowne Plaza where Gwangjang Market is, and then the suspect fled to HMart in Carrollton off Old Denton and was arrested there after a foot chase.
PhillyLee3434@reddit
Anybody have links to what is possibly going on? All I have found is a possible mass shooting event.
Snobolski@reddit
I heard it was a possible mass shooting event.
PhillyLee3434@reddit
Some kind of business deal gone wrong. 69 year old Sung Han Ho. Alive and taken into custody, 2 dead 3 in stable condition.
kevntao@reddit
But there isn't even an HMart there...
Zanotekk@reddit
I rolled by there around 11:15am and saw like 10+ police cars. I was wondering what that was about.
ChairKillerYi@reddit
Dang, was just there this morning
Jounochi@reddit
Hope everyone that got hurt comes out of this ok. Will be interested to hear what led up to this event.
Significant_Put_3471@reddit
Explains the helicopters orbiting the area.
texasraider@reddit
Media is reporting the shooter is in custody now
BillDuki@reddit
I was just out in the area about 30 minutes ago, and multiple ambulances and fire trucks were leaving from multiple stations.
False_Club_8965@reddit
We’ve had a mass casualty alert at my work twice today now.
cynthiawinn@reddit
Mass shooting, I heard. Patients being diverted to hospitals & shooter is still at large.
