US expats in Germany?

Hey there everyone. I’m from the US and ditched everything to come to Germany. It’s nice. I like it a lot, but sometimes wish I could find some Americans to hang out with. I’m in the eastern part, near Leipzig. If anyone knows of a US group that meets on occasion… would love info on that. :)

If you are a Democrat, see if there is a chapter of Democrats Abroad near you.

I left my politics at home when I left. It’s liberating, who needs it.

Must be nice to put your head in the sand like that, while the rest of the world is suffering thanks to the way Americans voted in the last election.
FlippinHeckles@reddit
It has nothing to do with putting my head in the sand I just prefer trying to understand the politics of the new country I have moved to. Understand the sentiment and different ways of thinking or similarities. You are in a new place take the opportunity to grow.

Yeah literally every election in the history of democracy has not been uniformly 100% consensus. This is stupidity masquerading as wisdom.

You can’t “understand the politics of the new country” in a vacuum as U.S. politics affect the world.
FlippinHeckles@reddit
Who said anything that I was in a vacuum? I consume the local news it contains world news, filtered through the eyes of the country you are living in. Do you think other countries are in a vacuum?

The point is you didn’t leave US politics at home when you immigrated. US politics is affecting the politics of the place to which you immigrated. This is why you can’t understand the politics of your new home without also understanding US politics.

I absolutely left the politics at home, I have no idea about the local politics of my home. I occasionally get relevant snippets of world news and the impact of politics from afar. What’s going on in my home town, or home state I have no idea. I just see the impact of international politics. I wouldn’t call that my home politics.

I think the point is US politics impact the world. Certainly a NATO country with the largest American military installation outside of the US, such as Germany.
Also, saying you left politics at home is not the vibe you seem to think it is.
It’s giving, “I have the privilege to ignore horrible things since I now foolishly think they don’t impact me”.
akie@reddit
Oh, the luxury of an American who is able to escape American politics 😍
HighwaySetara@reddit
It is an option for OP, that's all.
FlippinHeckles@reddit
It’s not a criticism just an opinion. Having options is good.

Fair enough. My husband is moving to Europe in June and he will be looking them up, mainly for social reasons. Idk a ton about them but I do know they do education/advocacy around Americans voting from abroad, which is great.
Reysona@reddit
Probably Americans, because the IRS haunts us no matter where we live?
aranellee@reddit
Yeah FB expat groups are usually the best bet for that kind of stuff, good suggestion!
zkesstopher@reddit
Gonna need someone to hold my hand, and tell me how to find a job there. I would jump at the opportunity.
Virtual_War4366@reddit
I'm thinking of moving there. How did you do it?
TechPsych@reddit
I'm wondering the same...
Soccergirl1979@reddit
Start your own group. That's what I did. Don't make it exclusive to Americans. I started a Facebook group in my town for international women. Met amazing women from all over the world wanting to connect with other women in English.

Immigrants

There are Americans all over Germany. Look up on Facebook expats groups. I’m sure you will find someone.
Vegetable_Sock_4026@reddit
I would suggest looking for expat groups on Facebook if you have one. I joined one for the city I’m moving to and they have all sorts of meet ups.
