My kids' dance recital theme is the equivalent of a 1950s theme when I was a kid. Legit themes, but I don't love how the math works out...

We are as far away from Raiders of the Lost Ark's release year (1981) as it was from the year it took place in (1936).
Dazed and Confused (1993) took place in 1976. A movie with a similar time gap today would take place in 2009.
If Back to the Future were remade, and Marty McFly traveled back in time today, he would wind up in good old 1996. Or, forward to 2056. Or way back to 1926 to save Doc Brown from falling in love with a flapper and being murdered by bootleggers.
ironic-hat@reddit
I associate the word “Totally” and cassettes as more of an 80s thing. Which means we officially hit that awkward stage where people born in the 2000s are blending the pop culture of 80s and 90s together.
XELA_38@reddit
shit!! in 2001 I was still listening to tapes.... because my car only played them but still!!!
magnifico-o-o-o@reddit
I had a car with a tape deck until 2017!
KBO_Winston@reddit
Still have one. I work in music and my youngest coworker was very impressed.
Shame it hasn't worked in years.
Live_Today1943@reddit
That’s why you get the cassette/aux thingy for your discman, strategically placed in a nest of your best old navy hoodies so it doesn’t skip on every single bump, just the almost medium sized ones and up! 😂
estephens13@reddit
I spent countless hours driving around aimlessly with this setup lol.
XELA_38@reddit
I had one and to this day I'm not sure if I was putting it in right or what but mine never worked so I just started buying tapes from half price. They were dirt cheap and had great stuff like License to Ill by the Beastie Boys, Hole, early 90s alternative, classic rock and 80's rap so I was alright.
omgitsjagen@reddit
I'm still not really sure what wizardry powers the CD -> Tape converter. It really is something that exists that doesn't make any sense to me.
Moxie_Stardust@reddit
2001 is when I finally had a car with a CD player. When I was moving I found what I think was the last tape I made to play in my car, a weird transitional relic... I recorded a P2P downloaded MP3 copy of a Me First & the Gimme Gimmes album onto cassette.
toasterb@reddit
Cassettes were still a big deal in the 90s though. I had tons of CDs at home, but probably 90% of what I listened to outside of home was mix-tapes made from my CDs.
I didn't have a decent anti-skip discman until about '97 and I got a CD burner in '98, and I was a very early adopter on that.
bumfuzzledbee@reddit
Mostly agree, but I definitely had cassettes in the 90s. 1993 I got my own radio that only did cassettes. By 1999, it was all cds. Lots of the first cars my friends and I drove only had cassette players and we had to use adapters. The same way that early 90s hair and late 80s are very similar, the transition takes time. And I'm sure our parents felt like our 50s/60s/70s theme days were full of anachronisms
ironic-hat@reddit
My rational: cassettes, while invented in the 60s, took off big time in the 80s with the Walkman.
The compact disk, while technically a 70s invention, didn’t really get mass adoption until the 90s when smaller and cheaper players became available.
So the CD is the pinnacle of the 90s music listening experience, even if cassettes were around.
black_cat_X2@reddit
Still have vivid memories of the excitement in our home when my teenage brother brought home our first CD player.
Muddy_Wafer@reddit
Excuse me, but the pinacle of the ‘90s music listening experience is a CD played in a disc man that’s plugged into your car stereo via a cassette converter.
ironic-hat@reddit
Ah yes. When hitting the slightest bump at 5mph would cause a few seconds of skipping. God I loved it when the iPod came out.
fraghead5@reddit
Before the portable cd players had that “antiskip” tech built in, I remember trying to fashion a mount for my disc man out of dollar store sponges to try to cushion the bumps. It worked like 20% better than nothing.
ironic-hat@reddit
I’m convinced the “antiskip” label was nothing more than a decoration.
fraghead5@reddit
The difference between a player with and without antiskip was definitely noticeable for me.

I specifically remember the third grade talent show (1990ish), where these girls did “leader of the pack,” and the one girl who played Billy rode around the auditorium on her scooter before wiping out. I thought it was so bad ass, still do

No. The 90s just ended 10 years ago. I will die on this hill.

omgitsjagen@reddit
"Surviving" is a strong word. It seems like that's where the time-break occurred.
OpiumPhrogg@reddit
Not quite, it occured when subway stopped doing the wedge/boatcut.
Basic_User_Name3000@reddit
True. I meant survive in the sense that all my paltry bank balances continued and the power grid stayed working.
I worked in law at the time and we had a y2k practice group! Basically a bunch of people claiming that all boards/directors would get their butts sued if if they don’t hustle to show some fixes. It was an absolute Chicken Little situation. I left before it happened, as it was my very first job.
-Cool_Ethan-@reddit
Relax, man, it's the 90s...
Polkawillneverdie17@reddit
Uh oh.
Blackbird136@reddit
The use of “totally” to me is more 80s than 90s? 🤔
ThePerfectSnare@reddit
They should have put something like, "Totally '80s! Not."
LumpyJump6091@reddit
Or "Psyche!"
Eaglepursuit@reddit
Probably should have done "90s to the Max!" or something
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
Well I can reassure you there, because the math isn't mathing. The 50s were forty years before the 90s. The 90s are thirty years before the 20s.
No-Relation4226@reddit
My kid’s school is doing a 90s theme this week for teacher appreciation week. There is a bulletin board with a bunch of teachers’ school pics from the 90s, which is hilarious/ sad because there are more than a few who weren’t alive in the 90s (or at least not school-age).
Adrasteia-One@reddit
My daughter's second grade teacher from last year was not even born until 2001, so it's so trippy to know I'm older than a teacher now, hehe.
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
I was older than one of my teachers when I'd gone back to college in my thirties. There'd been plent of jokes and such in the class before. But it was a rough moment when I dropped a reference, looked to them for a knowing smirk, and got a blank look. That's when I learned I was older than them. 😅
Eaglepursuit@reddit
The groups of actual adults who I'm older than has increased at an alarming rate in the last decade. Pro athletes. Some coaches. Teachers. Principals. Doctors. Some congresspeople. The mayor of my town. It's annoying that people keep acting like I'm supposed to be all mature and wizened and shit.
Adrasteia-One@reddit
This does make things difficult because, yeah, half the time it seems like even we don't have all the answers. I feel like I can identify so much more with where my parents most likely were when I was growing up.
Moxie_Stardust@reddit
...my youngest kid was born in 2002 💀
Adrasteia-One@reddit
Whoa! All this to say, we're still young-ish, hehe.
lnc_5103@reddit
When my kid was little she was like did you know they did have electricity in the 1900s. Blew her mind when I told her I was alive in the 80s and 90s 🤣
See also: the 90s were just 10 years ago!
Eaglepursuit@reddit
My kids think it's hilarious to mis-age me.
"Dad, what was it like before electricity?"
"Dad, where were you when the Roman Empire fell?"
"Dad, what was the Civil War like?

Unfortunately they kind of botched it. It was like 75% songs from animated soundtracks. For every "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Vogue", there were like 3 or 4 "Never Had a Friend Like Me"s and "Hakuna Matata"s. I perked up when I saw "Hard Knock Life", but it was NOT the Jay-Z version.

It bugs me that they printed "90's". There should be no apostrophe. It's 90s, not "90's".
gin_possum@reddit
Your children are now the property of this decade. Some of us belong to the night. Your kids belong to the 90s.
-Cool_Ethan-@reddit

Carl’s Jr.: Fuck You. I’m eating!
Independent_Shoe3523@reddit
I think it actually is 90's with an apostrophe.
wooq@reddit
Totally 90 is!
os_beef@reddit
It's not. The base is "the 1990s".
It doesn't belong to 1990, so it doesn't indicate possession.
There aren't any missing letters (or numbers right of the zero), so no need to indicate as such with an apostrophe. There's a case for rendering it as "the '90s" though.
It is plural. "1990s" refers to the entire decade. When plural, no apostrophe, so it becomes "the 90s".
So to reiterate:
Plural? Generally speaking, no apostrophe.
Possessive or missing letters/numbers? Generally speaking apostrophes are safe.
Independent_Shoe3523@reddit
My mistake. It's actually '90s.
os_beef@reddit
There's a case for that like I mentioned, but "90s" is also considered correct these days. Grammar is a living thing and evolves over time.
three-sense@reddit
Or ‘90s to denote the absence of “19”

We are well past the 90s being nostalgic at this point. My kid had a choir concert this week with a 2010 theme. She said she needed a retro outfit for the performance. Talk about a mid-life crisis inducing statement.

wooq@reddit
Imagine Back to the Future, but set in the 90s, and Marty McFly gets up on stage and plays some Polyphia or Periphery or something and the school dance stops and stares at him and he goes "your kids are gonna love it" and they go back to playing Salt n Peppa or C+C Music Factory or whatever
Spear_Ritual@reddit
That’s offensive.

Like when they did 90s for the Olympic ice dance. On the one hand I was delighted. On the other hand, I realized that most of the athletes were too young to have any memory of the 90s, if they were even alive yet 😬

We had 50s day, too. Some guys couldn't find bryl cream and used Vaseline and found it very hard to get out of the hair.
jessek@reddit
I remember they had a school dance at my elementary school that was themed on the 1950s in the 1980a and I asked my baby boomer parents about the 50s, to which they told me “I was like 4 years old back then, I don’t remember much”.
Fabulous-South-9551@reddit
Yes I did too! Do the children even go to sock hops anymore with poodle skirts and saddle shoes? I guess the teacher event planners back then were re-living their high school years through us just like teachers today are with all the 90s throwbacks
jessek@reddit
I think it was because most of the teachers were older than my parents and the 50s were their teen years. It later turned to a 60s dance when my brother was in elementary school and I think it was a 70s one when my youngest brother was there.
RedSix2447@reddit
Being a late teen to my mid 20s in the 90s, I don’t recall seeing neon and a bunch of shapes like that other than in saved by the bell. I don’t think the lists of movies a lot of these party planners use for reference is correct and was overdone. lol.
They are also always missing glamour shots though. lol
Exciting-Argument-67@reddit
... and they put the apostrophe in the wrong spot. (It's '90s, not 90's. The apostrophe is there to show that something was left out, like in the word "isn't.")
