Ford Teases New Details About Its $30K EV Truck Coming Next Year

Ford gave us a tiny glimpse at the new pickup, and as next year's debut approaches, here's what we think it'll be like.

Another possibility regarding the high rear bed deck is that it would hold a substantial lockable storage area beneath it, similar to what the Honda ridgeline has done.

what is the point of this article?
There is no new information
orthopod@reddit
This has a pretty decent video

UnusualHound@reddit
No they won't.
KaszualKartofel@reddit
I honestly agree. Slate is a 2 door suv/truck. IDK how many people will be interested in that.
orthopod@reddit
I've shown a bunch of people the slate truck, and most are quite interested.
KaszualKartofel@reddit
You’re aware of what „sample size” is?
orthopod@reddit
Yes.
Do you think you're opinion is more valid than a multi million dollar company that probably did tons of research on the market viability to make a product?
KaszualKartofel@reddit
Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if I am. Fisker was also a multi million dollar company and they failed. These companies fail all the time including the gigantic ones like amazon or facebook. Like that truck has no stereo infotainment or power windows and is gonna cost similar to a corolla if not more with worse range and comfort. There’s a reson no one makes single cab mid-size truck or 2 door SUVs. You could buy a used ford ranger and get more out of it than slate.
UnusualHound@reddit
Not even that. I just don't think Slate will come to market cheaply/at all at this point, tbh.
orthopod@reddit
Well they're almost done with the factory,. Vehicles are set for production at end of this year.

CrashingBlumpkins46@reddit
Like...literally everything from Alpha Motors. I swear they've been releasing renders of vehicles "they will soon be producing" for like a decade at this point lmao
Car-face@reddit
Geez... I just checked out their site.
They're now up to:
11 trucks
5 SUVs
5 Coupes
3 Sedans
2 Crossovers
There used to be a couple of shill accounts that constantly "just found out about" Alpha motors and insisted they had prototypes and were just around the corner from production, but it feels like a grift.
UnusualHound@reddit
I'm happy companies can make renders and concepts. Too bad that's 0% of putting a car on the street.
MembershipNo2077@reddit
At this point these EV companies might as well be kickstarters for investors. They'll take the money and promise nothing.
KaszualKartofel@reddit
I get but this is how every company starts. I mean from what I’ve seen it seems like they could do it. They might have problems keeping the costs down because if you want a low margin product you need to make it appealing to lots of people. I think it’s too quirky.
willyolio@reddit
2 door truck with 150 mile range.
YeastOrFamine@reddit
I could see it being useful for "campus" type maintenance vehicles, basically in lieu of a kei truck, where you need zero frills/conveniences and don't drive it more than a few miles a day.
willyolio@reddit
That's true, but I don't see that being enough to sustain them.
I saw plenty of Mitsubishi iMEVs back in the day as campus vehicles, too...
YeastOrFamine@reddit
At least 6
YeastOrFamine@reddit
The cut lines for frame repairability is a neat idea. Is that new? Does Tesla do that?
muchgreaterthanG_O_D@reddit
Clicks baby.
Choice_Student4910@reddit
Yeah I don’t get the secrecy. Best thing Ford could do is get people excited about actual models they’re working on. Not some very early prototype shapes they’re thinking about doing.
As a current Mach-E driver, I’m almost glad that my lease ends in a couple years.
-Racer-X@reddit
the 3d model thing they got seems cool
couldnt they use Ai to make a predictive image off that
instead of describing bedsides lol
lostinheadguy@reddit
A bunch of outlets recently got a tour of Ford's EV "Skunkworks". That's why lots of these articles are popping up right now.
Unfettered345@reddit
I am super excited about this truck! It promises to be useful, efficient, and affordable. It's like a somewhat larger version of the telo truck, but made by a major manufacturer with a high commitment to getting it to market. We now have a good idea of what it will look like, and its looks suit me just fine. I assume that the apparently shallow bed is to accommodate the mid-gate, the motor underneath it, and aerodynamics. In any case, it looks like it will be easy to reach into and out of the bed without a struggle. The lfp battery chemistry promises longevity. Ford claims that it will be fun to drive. I could see auto crossing a truck like this with a few tweaks. Versatility is in the eye of the beholder, after all. Since it's a Ford, most likely the cheap versions will be stripped down as well as few and far between. My guess is that it's pricing will be similar to the current Maverick's.
Brap_Zanigan@reddit
Electrified Maverick.
KingMario05@reddit
Ford e-Ranchero? Name is trademarked...
Metalhippy666@reddit
I would legit start saving now for a down payment if they gave it a 60-63 retro body.
YeastOrFamine@reddit
The cutlines for frame repairability is a neat idea. Is that new? Does Tesla do that?
This_Elk_1460@reddit
So what 50 Grand after dealer markup?
Anchor_Aways@reddit
If anything they'll be $5k under MSRP within a year, Ford dealers struggled to move the lightning and mach-e even with incentives.
This_Elk_1460@reddit
Actually I kind of witnessed the opposite at Ford dealerships at least around me. Most places left the lightning at either MSRP or higher because they didn't want to sell them. They would much rather sell a regular F-150 because then they can earn money on repairs as well.
ImGudLuhv@reddit
For the base model with a cassette deck & no airbags.
MembershipNo2077@reddit
A cassette deck would be sick, ngl.
-insignificant-@reddit
Cassette deck is actually extra
PROfessorShred@reddit
And you have to buy the optional 8 track package that comes with heated floormats and microwaveable headrests to even then get the option of specing the cassette.
DoublePostedBroski@reddit
Wasn’t the Lightning marketed initially as an affordable electric pickup? And then when it finally came out it was like $95,000?
Baby-girl-54321@reddit
$30K EV truck sounds great… but I’ll believe it when I see the final price.
piddydb@reddit
Yep. If the Lightning had stayed in line with its ads of sub $40k starting price and increase from there with normal inflation, it would still be around today.
costafilh0@reddit
Is there some new development in EVs enabling several profitable $30K EVs coming out by 2030?
Or are they just gambling again expecting some miracle, and for ICE and hybrids to offset the losses?
jonrpatrick@reddit
This article doesn't add much to the conversation, so why did they do it? One big reason, and it's called Slate.
Reddit is funny. One comment here questions why they do an article about something not in production, and another comment about focusing on models they're actually working on.
Ford is actively working on not just this small(er) truck, but a whole factory and production process for it!
But when it's a year away and they're not willing to reveal the styling yet, why bother?
Because Slate is coming and Ford is simply trying to stay in the discussion and not have it's future products forgotten about.
I look forward to finding out more.
PROfessorShred@reddit
Because Slate is expected to be at $25k+ territory. So they may be able to convince some people who would have bought that to hold off for a $30k Ford truck.
Shmokesshweed@reddit
Lol.
They have essentially zero demand. Zero expertise in manufacturing compared to Ford. Zero brand equity. Zero just about everything.
UmaThurmish@reddit
like how the Maverick was 20K right?
Shmokesshweed@reddit
It was, if you ordered it quickly enough and your dealer had allocations.
Cpt_Leebo@reddit
$30k huh? So that means ~60k starting, just like every other $30k ev truck?
Shmokesshweed@reddit
Nope. They already had one of those. It's gone.
UnusualLeadership408@reddit
If they actually build it, I believe they'll sell every single one they can make. The real question is: when?
joe2105@reddit
So you're telling me they can make a $30k EV truck without credits? You're telling me they can make what would have been a $23,000 truck to most consumers?....absolute B.S.
krashtestgenius@reddit
Until the free market allows China to sell their EV cars here, we will continue to think $30k is acceptable
bippos@reddit
What about a sedan?
KingMario05@reddit
Sounds cool. If, that is, it comes out.
Please come out. Please also spawn a new Focus and Taurus...
slickricktriplesix@reddit
I hope this is actually good enough to replace my Maverick. Sort of doubtful.
DaBanninator@reddit
If it has LFP batteries and a NACS port on the right rear corner as God intended, I'm in.
