Let me get this straight: The government attempted to reel in decades of unsustainable spending which would have been largely canceled out by unlocked funding from Brussels. Now PSD is pissy because these reforms cut into their voter base and patron networks. So they've teamed up with AUR (after promising never to work with the thug known as Simion) to vote out the government. No one has a plan for what comes next and the Leu is in free fall.
Do I just about have it?

You're mostly on point, with some mentions to be made. The now deposed government inherited a huge budget deficit and their primary purpose on swearing in was fixing it. The reforms they made at first were neolib austerity measures that hit the poor and middle class, while leaving the banks(highest profits in the EU), energy sector(huge mafia), foreign corporations and the political clientele basically untouched. This created a lot of frustration even for PNL/USR voters and gave AUR/PSD ammo for attacking the prime minister and the opportunity to sustain the no-confidence vote.
Besides the austerity measures there were some attempted reforms as of recently that cut into the PSD networks, but it was too little and too late.

Not surprising, you're not getting the best of the best when you have to cancel the elections for the pro-EU guy to win the race. The EU has been having a lot of issues lately and they're almost all self inflicted from not following democracy when it's inconvenient.
Then the people turn to the far-right to oust the establishment politicians and everyone freaks out and wonders how the voters could possibly be so daft as to do this to the poor politicians who have been screwing them over.

Your voting system is an outdated mess where people with not winning the popular vote can still win, your president breaks the constitution at least once per week and let people shoot on the street and he already announced that he wants to cancel the mid terms ...
But yeah "tHe eU hAs pRoBlEmS"
something something "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?" something something ...

Well goldarnit, you really have stepped into it cowboy!
imunfair@reddit
No worries, I'm used to pissing off the pro-UA and EU fanboys - and unlike other people I have enough karma to not have to worry about their petty votes.

In my 6 years on reddit, that's the most reddit thing I've ever read. Beyond fascinating!

What are you about? Dan has won after record turnout caused by people's hate towards far right and r*ssia and rightly so. If current corrupt opposition is against him, it only shows he's on the right track.

They canceled the election and still there was no official reason, besides Russia bad. And yes, few people voted for Nicusor and mostly voted against Simion, but the first round of election were canceled under shady reasons and weird timing, just hours before the final elections, even Asociaţia Pentru Apărarea Drepturilor Omului în România - Comitetul Helsinki, an important western aligned NGO considers it a major breach in the democratic principle and will only fuel even more distrust among the people.

Hello. Please explain to me how to become president with $0 campaign spending. I want to be president too in 2028 if it's that cheap as Calin Georgescu did. Thank you
fifthflag@reddit
Hey, did I say nothing shady happened? I said the government didn't give any proof, which is true.
thecbeginner@reddit
lol, they canceled the second round of elections in December 2024. And then they didn't even follow the constitution, which explicitly says that the elections should be resumed in the 2nd Sunday after the cancelation. And with the same people except the problematic one. They organized elections 6 months later and with different people.

After russian puppet backed by troll farms had to be removed? https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cx2yl2zxrq1o
thecbeginner@reddit
sure, that's why there is no conviction and that's why our current president still didn't present the document about the canceled elections, right? Even though he said he will do so by January (and even before gave some other deadlines)
Xtech13@reddit
The declassified documents being proof of russian meddling and the reason for cancellation? They're here afaik https://www.presidency.ro/ro/media/comunicate-de-presa/comunicat-de-presa1733327193?mc_cid=8f0dd5f2a9&mc_eid=cd1f92f96c

The guy is actively on trial on counts of incitement to revolt, illegal campaign funding and spreading fascist propaganda. What are you even on about?
sogladatwork@reddit
Americans don’t understand that this is fairly common in real parliamentary systems.
The top comment here being an American who knows nothing about it… just Chef’s kiss, really.
Crazyjackson13@reddit
> real parliamentary systems
what defines a real parliamentary system exactly?
whichbitchstolemyacc@reddit
They probably meant presence of more than two entrenched pol. parties
LifeWulf@reddit
Well that excludes Canada now I guess.
Only half /s
Mal_Dun@reddit
It's almost as if the countries that inherited their voting systems from the brits all end up with 2 parties .... it must be a coincidence not a systemic issue, right?
dood9123@reddit
As a Canadian I would agree without the /s. Our upper house remains appointed rather than elected, despite the promises of constitutional reform abundant through the 2010s.
Ian_W@reddit
One where a vote in the parliament can depose a government.
mrgoobster@reddit
I wouldn't bet that the guy in question is actually American. Half the flairs on this sub are intentionally wrong.
sogladatwork@reddit
Fair
PartySr@reddit
Not sure what that guy is eating, but the government was voted out by the political party who canceled the first presidential election and until recently was part of the government, and the political parties who were against canceling the elections.
These political parties are against the reforms that would have allowed Romania to receive billions from EU trough the NRRP program. They are against digitalization, transparency, and removing their tight grip over institutions, and state companies.
