What a silly thing.
evthrowawayverysad@reddit
Completely agree. And the only benefit to this is that a very small handful of air traffic controllers can basically not speak for a few minutes... that's thousands and thousand of people on arriving and departing flights, thousands of tons of additional jet fuel burned, so that a few dozen people can spend a few tokenistic minutes in silence... it's insane to me that this comes across as a good idea at all. There's nothing stopping the ATC staff holding their own small remembrance before or after their shift to honor the fallen without doing this. Crazy.
Maybe_A_Pigeon@reddit
the whole point is top do it collectively, as a country. if y'all can't respect that stay the fuck away
evthrowawayverysad@reddit
My country does the exact same, except we don't pause vital infrastructure causing safety risks, huge backlogs, extra pollution and wasted time. The act is tokenism. Those unable to stand in remembrance at a particular time can easily do it at any other.
Would you be furious if one of these controllers broke their silence to help avert an accident? If yes, then you're a hypocrite.
Maybe_A_Pigeon@reddit
it's 2 minutes dude, aren't you a bit overreacting? of course if there's a critical incident a response needs tro be given, but you're just argueing in bad faith at this point
evthrowawayverysad@reddit
If anything at this point it just seems like you're offended that other countries able to do something that yours is not.
CrewmemberV2@reddit
If this was a safety risk they wouldnt do it.
Come back when you grow up and get some empathy.
evthrowawayverysad@reddit
I have all the empathy needed here. Every other country that holds a silence manages this without also enforcing it upon their ATC. You're the one arguing in favour of risking public safety when other countries manage perfectly well without.
Maybe_A_Pigeon@reddit
we're not aother countries tho. you do you
ScarletleavesNL@reddit
Pray tell which country you are from then ?
evthrowawayverysad@reddit
I'm British, and grew up in France. Both hold national silences in honour of the fallen, neither applies that to ATC.
Express-Tradition332@reddit
2 fucking minutes in 1 year, a year has 525,600 minutes, you're telling me that 0,00038% time of a year being silent to commemorate something like this is silly? Show some fucking respect.
shrekfanboy4life@reddit
yes very silly to have a moment of silence to commemorate the most devestating war our country has ever seen
Careful-Republic-332@reddit
I want to know how much did that cost in lost jet fuel..
evthrowawayverysad@reddit
and lost time... seriously, that's tens of thousands of people arriving and departing just stuck so that ,what... a small handful of air traffic controllers can not speak for a few minutes? I'm amazed this thread isn't just a slating of the whole thing... it seems ridiculous.
Maybe_A_Pigeon@reddit
show a bit of respect buddy, your entitlement is showing
evthrowawayverysad@reddit
Actually, The reverse is true; silence is like this are tokenistic at best. The selfish and entitled move would insist that an entire nation's infrastructure comes to a halt just so that you can take part as an individual. The selfless and considerate move as an atc would be to hold my own personal remembrance outside of this time, to make sure that there was no lapse in safety, delays caused, or extra pollution created.
Insisting that everything grinds to a halt for your benefit is the selfish move. And that's a very simple thing to understand.
Maybe_A_Pigeon@reddit
my benefit? i gain nothing from this personally. the fact that you value money over people says a lot about you though
evthrowawayverysad@reddit
Actually, my priority is safety and emissions. The fact that you value token gestures over those things is equally telling.
_DoogieLion@reddit
The point is to stop and remember those that died.
Fuck your inconvenience.
evthrowawayverysad@reddit
Nothing is stopping those people from remembering the fallen at any time.
_DoogieLion@reddit
No-one is forced to respect the two minutes silence.
Yeah you’ll be looked at like a piece of shit if you try and disrespect it. But you can do whatever you want.
evthrowawayverysad@reddit
Actually, given that everyone in bound on an aircraft has no choice but to hold, It seems like they are forced to do exactly that. Anyone that relies on an important piece of infrastructure at that moment is forced to wait for it to end.
_DoogieLion@reddit
Nope, they don’t have to fly. Flying into the Netherlands was a choice. They should feel free not to if they don’t want to respect the local customs
evthrowawayverysad@reddit
You seem quite offended by this. To be clear every other nation I can find that holds a national silence does not apply it to their air traffic controllers. The Netherlands seems to be the exception. Every other modern country manages to function just fine without this odd restriction, So perhaps with some luck you guys will be able to find a way to manage it as well 👍
_DoogieLion@reddit
In the UK it’s respected as well and generally takeoffs and landings are paused.
evthrowawayverysad@reddit
No they aren't. Traffic into and out of airports is rerouted or reduced to reduce noise levels over ongoing events honouring the fallen, but air traffic controllers are actually working harder to ensure that this is done respectfully and safely. This is a well known fact.
_DoogieLion@reddit
So the same as in the Netherlands then….
evthrowawayverysad@reddit
Nope. Flights are still routed in and actively taking off and landing, what ATC and pilots communicate normally over radios. Only the Netherlands struggles to do this.
_DoogieLion@reddit
Incorrect.
evthrowawayverysad@reddit
Correct.
evthrowawayverysad@reddit
Why? There's no need to hold up infrastructure, as every other country demonstrates just fine. It seems very strange that the Netherlands isn't able to do that, hopefully they'll be able to figure it out.
ScaramouchScaramouch@reddit
There was quite a large war and this is a way to pay respect to those who died.
evthrowawayverysad@reddit
I understand that fully, but there is absolutely no need to bring important infrastructure to a standstill in order to do this. Remembrance for the deceased can take place at any time.
ScaramouchScaramouch@reddit
There very much is a need since many of us seem to have forgotten what that war was about.
evthrowawayverysad@reddit
And that need can be fulfilled by people in essential safety focussed roles outside of the time they're supposed to be filling those roles... Just like they do in almost every other country on earth that holds national silences.
ScaramouchScaramouch@reddit
The point is to intrude. If nobody notices it's meaningless.
evthrowawayverysad@reddit
And that intrusion will continue unhindered if atc do their jobs, just as they do in every other country that holds a national silence. I'm actually arguing in favour of what the sensible majority of countries do in this case.
darian66@reddit
It is a very important national tradition. If one feels too inconvenienced by the fact our country has a moment of remembrance for the most devastating war in our history and all fallen since, they could always choose not to book a flight that to Schiphol on the evening of the 4th of May.
evthrowawayverysad@reddit
It's a national tradition in nearly every European country to hold some sort of silence in honour of the fallen. In all of those other countries vital infrastructure roles continue as normal, and those workers can hold their own personal remembrance outside of that time.
It's actually quite funny rhat people are slating my take when I'm the one arguing in favour of what most countries do, which is the most common sense thing.
Foryourconsideration@reddit
it seems ridiculous until you actually remember WW2 was not that long ago. Your grandparents were probably effected by it. Everyone's grandparents, for that matter. Never again means something. AFAIK, the poppies are still growing in Flanders field...
DutchProv@reddit
Fuck off lmao.
Jaggedmallard26@reddit
Two minutes silence is country wide (many European countries have similar too, normally on the armistice though), people on the plane would either be aware of it already or would find it an interesting thing to experience. Its not some ATC
D0ntC4llMeShirley@reddit
Let’s say an a320 burns 600kg of fuel in 15 mins. So that’s about 750litres.
So 1 min is 50 litres. Multiplied by the price of jet fuel. Not sure what that is right now. Maybe €2?
You’re looking at €200 or 100 litres for a 2 min delay.
vsimakhin@reddit
It wasn't just a 2 min delay. If you check the holdings, each airplane did 2-3 full holdings. One leg of the holding is 1 minute, plus some time for the turn. So the airplanes were delayed for 7-8 minutes.
Whazor@reddit
Could they save fuel by reducing speed/height in preparation of landing?
haskell_jedi@reddit
Reducing altitude actually increases fuel burn in general because the air is more dense. Reducing speed might do so in principle, but since everyone is on approach, most speed reductions are done with flaps and spoilers anyway (engines are at relatively low thrust anyway).
So overall, not by much.
Careful-Republic-332@reddit
And there are 15 planes in holding pattern if I calculated correctly. But yeah, I have seen stupider things to spend 3000€ on.
headphase@reddit
AMS two years ago: "we're eliminating 30% of the slots due to noise and carbon pollution!"
Also AMS: let's randomly put traffic containing thousands of people into holding patterns for a gesture that 5 people will ever see or understand in the moment
jumbledsiren@reddit
I didn't know I could recognise the Dutch national anthem so well, thanks, Max Verstappen...
amsync@reddit
But are you of Germanic blood? And do you honor the king of Spain?

rokatoro@reddit
Lol signs of an era, Schumacher is the reason I know the German and Italian anthem so well.
Dinglebobus@reddit
I think you’re mistaken, this is the Dutch national anthem
mbashs@reddit
I knew what it was before opening 😂
Mrpolje@reddit
That anthem is permanently seared into my brain after 2023
Kelvavion@reddit
Why is the F1 closing theme playing in the background /s
Trick_Ad3292@reddit
What the fuck, when I heard MST was having 2 minutes of silence I joked, how are they doing that? Have air traffic stop? Now they kinda did this lmao.
ActuallyRick@reddit
All public transport indeed stops for 2 min. Most Dutch people als make sure they stand still or are not on the road bud not required of course. Bud yea almost whole country stops for those 2 min.
DestoryDerEchte@reddit
What is being rememberd?
ScarletleavesNL@reddit
The victims of war. It used to be just the fallen from WWII but we have scaled it upwards after 50 years of new wars and Dutch victims.
May 5th is Liberation day.
573040@reddit
All victims of World War II and subsequent conflicts and peacekeeping operations.
AlexG55@reddit
I imagine that 8:02 pm on May 4th is the moment of highest demand on the Dutch electricity grid as all of the electric trains have to start moving at once.
Maybe_A_Pigeon@reddit
imagine having to manage all that with the knowledge that fucking up could cause a catastrophe

No silence for those in Flevoland and Zeeland though!
kristina_42@reddit
your mayday has been denied please try again after 2 minutes
pielover007@reddit
What dashboard/tool is that?
ArjenHVA@reddit
As mentioned, it's the system the controllers use called AAA.

Looks like an actual radar screen someone just set a camera to record

Meanwhile, I cannot drink from a plastic straw to save the planet, whilst states come up with shit like this. Remember the fallen, and show respect. But not at the cost of an insane amount of fuel - especially given the current fuel situation.

ThegreatFaxe@reddit
Sea life doesnt choke on CO2, at least not directly. These are seperate issues
WobblierTube733@reddit
Increased carbon in the atmosphere directly leads to carbonic acidification of oceans. It’s incredibly destructive to reef ecosystems.
ThegreatFaxe@reddit
I know, but questioning the reduction of plastic waste is not the right conclusion. Using less plastic is a sound decision no matter what the planes at Schiphol Airport do.
WobblierTube733@reddit
I understand what you’re saying now. I thought you were implying that CO2 emissions aren’t a threat to ocean ecosystems.
UglyLikeCaillou@reddit
sofixa11@reddit
Fucking hell, it's like kids that can only focus on one thing.
One thing is completely disconnected from the other.
You don't use plastic straws because they're a small piece of trash that takes centuries to decrade in nature, so it gets everywhere and it's a problem for animals, water, etc.
Reducing the amount of fuel burned, and respectively the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, is a completely separate and just as crucial thing.
One is trash which is pollution in nature that you end up eating. The other is one of the main contributors to climate change and making parts of the planet less inhabitable. Both need taking on, and it isn't by stupid whataboutisms conflating things

I was at LHR for the British equivalent. Absolutely everyone and everything came to a complete stop, dead silence, for the duration. I was very impressed and never forgot it. Excellent tradition. (I am an American)
